Overview

Cycle from unspoiled Cilento to the Amalfi Coast

Cycling is a great way to explore the stunning natural and cultural treasures of Campania. This tour takes us through the best routes and contrasts of the region, from the relatively unknown and unspoiled Cilento to the lively Amalfi Coast. The Cilento National Park is largely undisturbed by modern life and as we cycle through quaint fishing villages, the traditions of the area are still evident. We also visit the Greco-Roman city of Paestum, with its three major doric temples, before heading to the lovely town of Minori on the Amalfi Coast. Here, we cycle on some of the most scenic routes in the world, while visiting beautiful towns including Positano and, of course, Amalfi itself. All the cycling will help to build our appetite for the fine food for which the area is renowned.

Around 9am, say ciao to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.

We start with a scenic circular ride along the southern coast of Cilento National Park, the most unspoilt stretch of coastline in southern Italy, offering spectacular views of the Gulf of Policastro. We arrive in the lovely coastal town of Marina di Camerota for a short break and then climb inland to the village of San Giovanni a Piro. We cycle around the impressive Mount Bulgheria and to the Mingardo Canyon before making our way back to Palinuro.

Tonight your tour leader ensures a big Italian welcome by arranging our first group dinner.

From Marina di Camerota, we follow the beautiful coastline to the peninsula of Capo Palinuro to the medieval village of Pisciotta, known for producing delicious olive oil, which we will taste. From here we climb gently to the town of Ascea. En route back to the coast, we cycle past the ancient Greek settlement of Velia, which has an impressive arch from the fourth century BCE, before heading to the plain of Casalvelino, where we stay in a lovely agriturismo.

Today we enjoy one of the finest rides in Italy as we leave the Casalvelino plain behind and cycle through picturesque coastal villages to Acciaroli, a favourite of Ernest Hemingway. We stop for lunch in Santa Maria di Castellabate, where there is the opportunity for a swim in the sea. In the afternoon we enjoy the final section of our route to Agropoli, a charming town overlooking the sea, and ride to our hotel, just a stone’s throw from the ancient Greek temples of Paestum.

We will also taste the celebrated buffalo mozzarella at lunch, before taking a train to Salerno, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. In the afternoon, we ride to Minori, one the most scenic coastal roads in the world. Along the way we stop in the fishing village of Cetara, known for delicious tuna and anchovies. We then continue to Capo d’Orso, offering breathtaking views over the Amalfi Coast and Capri. From here it’s mainly downhill as we cycle past dramatic cliffs and lemon terraces to the coastal villages of Maiori and finally Minori, our base for the last three nights.

Accommodation: Hotel Santa Lucia/Hotel 7 Bello (or similar)

Ride the scenic coastal road to Amalfi this morning, where we have time for a short stroll. The town has been popular with the British since Edwardian times, when the upper classes viewed the town as a pleasant place to spend their winters.

We then continue to Furore, Praiano and Positano, a route with views of the whole peninsula, including Capri. Then take a beautiful climb to the Colli di San Pietro, on the ridge between the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno. Finally, we return to Positano, a near-vertical town of colourful buildings, where we enjoy free time to explore, before riding back to Amalfi and then Minori in time for the sunset.

Please note: Today’s exact route is decided by the tour leader, based on local conditions. This may mean the distances, ascents and descents are different to those stated below.

Accommodation

Hotels and agriturismo

Stay in three- and four-star hotels and spend one night in an agriturismo – a beautifully converted farmhouse. All have either a swimming pool or beach nearby, which will be greatly appreciated in summer.

Palinuro: Hotel Santa Caterina (nights 1-2)

Cycle Cilento & the Amalfi Coast

We typically spend our first two nights at Santa Caterina, a welcoming hotel run by the Cerullo family. It’s home to the oldest ice cream shop in Palinuro, plus there’s a restaurant serving regional dishes made with fresh produce. Make sure to enjoy beautiful views over the sparkling sea from the rooftop wellness centre or panoramic terrace of Da Siena bar and ice cream parlour.

Casal Velino: Agriturismo Zio Cristoforo (night 3)

Cycle Cilento & the Amalfi Coast

Within Cilento National Park, this farmstay is a peaceful retreat in the Italian countryside. Take a dip in the palm-shaded swimming pool, which is built from local stone, or pull up a lounger to soak in the sun. In the evening, head to the restaurant for typical local produce and perhaps try the red or white wine made on site.

Paestum: Hotel Villa Rita (night 4)

Cycle Cilento & the Amalfi Coast

The family-run Villa Rita occupies a converted farm, with the manor house, stables and barns all enjoying a new life in hospitality. Now the property has pine-scented gardens with a sun lounger-lined pool. There’s also a traditional bistro where dishes are created with local ingredients from local producers.

Minori: Hotel Santa Lucia (nights 5-7)

Cycle Cilento & the Amalfi Coast

In Minori, we normally stay at the Santa Lucia. The Sammarco family has owned this 25-room, Mediterranean-style hotel for more than 50 years. It has an ideal location, just moments from a sandy beach, plus a seasonal solarium with a bar. Elsewhere, there’s the Garum restaurant, which serves traditional dishes from the Amalfi Coast. We also use alternative hotels in Minori on some departures, including Hotel 7 Bello.

Extend Your Trip

Exclusive Add-ons

Sorrento Hotels

Cycle Cilento & the Amalfi Coast

Perched above the Bay of Naples with sweeping sea views and easy access to the Amalfi Coast and Capri, Sorrento is a wonderfully relaxed place to end your adventure. Extra nights here give you time to explore charming streets, enjoy leisurely coastal walks and savour Italian cuisine with a view. Here are a few of our favourite hotels to inspire your stay:

Hotel Villa Garden: Set on the cliffs of Sant’Agnello, just outside central Sorrento, this boutique hotel offers elegant rooms with panoramic views across the Bay of Naples. With a peaceful atmosphere and a terrace overlooking the sea, it’s an ideal spot for a scenic and restful stay.

Antiche Mura: Located in the heart of Sorrento’s historic centre, this welcoming hotel combines traditional charm with modern comfort. Surrounded by citrus gardens and close to shops, restaurants and transport links, it’s perfectly placed for exploring the town at a relaxed pace.

Hotel Miramare: A classic clifftop hotel overlooking the Gulf of Naples, offering bright rooms and a terrace with far-reaching sea views. Its convenient location near Marina Grande and within easy walking distance of Sorrento’s historic centre makes it a comfortable and well-positioned base for extending your stay.

This is just a glimpse of what’s possible. Speak to your sales representative, who can guide you through the options and arrange everything for you.

Essential Information

This trip is classified Road and Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.

Riding is all on paved roads (some sections may be pot-holed). The route is undulating with a few steady hills and some steeper, more challenging uphill sections of 2.5mi-4.3mi (4km-7km). We cycle mainly on quiet roads, although they get much busier around Amalfi and Positano. A moderately good level of fitness and some training are required prior to the trip.

Key information

Recommended arrival time: You can arrive at any time on the first day of this trip. The tour leader will provide a welcome briefing in the morning of Day 2, usually around 9am.
Airport: Naples International Airport (NAP)

Cycle Cilento & the Amalfi Coast

Getting to the start hotel

The start hotel is in Palinuro, approximately a 2hr 30min drive from the airport. Your options for this journey are:

Take a transfer

We provide one group transfer from the airport to the hotel, which you can join at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the transfer times or to arrange a private transfer.

Make your own way

It’s possible to reach the start hotel by public transport, but we recommend joining the group transfer where possible. However, you can take a bus to Naples train station from the airport and then get the train to Pisciotta-Palinuro. The journey takes about two hours and should cost around €15. Once you arrive at Pisciotta-Palinuro, you can get a taxi to the hotel. If you would like further information on joining this trip, please speak to your sales representative.

Catching your return flight

There’s one group transfer to the airport, which you can join at no extra cost. Please speak to your sales representative for the time of the transfer. If the group transfer does not suit your flight time, speak to your sales representative to arrange an alternative.

Italy

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Italy. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

• Australia: www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/europe/italy
• Canada: www.travel.gc.ca/destinations/italy
• United Kingdom: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/italy/entry-requirements
• USA:  www.travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Italy.html

Please note: it is compulsory to carry ID with you at all times in Italy.

Breakfast is normally continental style with a choice of cereal, bread, pastries, yoghurt, orange juice and milk with an array of teas/coffee. Lunch usually consists of a light meal, such as a sandwich or a mix of delicious appetisers, in small traditional cafes along the route. The evening meals will be taken in a variety of local restaurants or at the hotels, where the standard is excellent. Most of the regional specialities in this area are prepared with delicious fresh produce such as tomatoes, olives, peppers and cheese. The Amalfi Coast also has some of the finest fish in the world; scialatielli ai frutti di mare (fresh ribbon-shaped pasta with seafood) is one of the staple dishes worth trying. The a la carte menus in most restaurants recommended by your local leader will give you an opportunity to sample a great range of local specialities.

Southern Italy is hot and dry in summer, with cooler but slightly damper spring and autumn periods; expect mild, damp winters at coastal levels. Rainfall is more common in the winter months with an average of one day in three affected. Unseasonable cold spells are possible at any time of year, during which time you will need warm clothes. It is very important to be equipped for cooler weather in early- and late-season departures. Additionally, you may also experience significant temperature changes between the coastal and inland areas; therefore, it’s vital you take warm and waterproof clothing.

As a certified B Corp, we’re on a mission to improve our social and environmental impact across all our adventures.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony through practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.

Brilliant Trip

An unforgettable trip from the quiet, laid back Cilento to the vibrant Amalfi Coast

Most Inspirational Moment

The scenery throughout the whole trip is beautiful. The tranquillity and authenticity of Cilento, with its charming fishing villages and untouched coastline, offered a beautiful contrast to the vibrant energy of the Amalfi Coast. On the free day I enjoyed the hike from Minori to Ravello. It's worth visiting Villa Cimbrone for the incredible views and gardens.

Thoughts on Group Leader

A huge part of what made this trip so special was our tour leader Paolo and support driver Emilio. Paolo is incredibly knowledgeable and organized but also warm, encouraging, and genuinely passionate about the region. His enthusiasm was contagious, and his local insight helped us appreciate every town, every climb and every meal.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack for all weather conditions. We had rain and shine in May - waterproofs came in handy. A good level of fitness is required for the hills and confidence cycling amongst the busy roads of the Amalfi Coast . The trip is extremely fun on an E-bike.

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day presented us with something unique, but the ride along Amalfi coast was the jewel of this trip

Thoughts on Group Leader

Of cause this trip would not be that great without our group leader - Paolo. He made sure we've been treated really well at every place we went to.

Difficult to fault it

A super trip, exploring contrasting areas of southern Italy, led by an amazing guide, with a lovely group of fellow cyclists

Most Inspirational Moment

No single moment, but some enjoyable stand out experiences - the views along both Cilento and Amalfi coasts, the delightful lunches we enjoyed especially near Pisciotta with a wonderful host and at the buffalo farm, the views from Ravello after hiking there from Minori. All very enjoyable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I had seen many positive praise of Paolo in reviews and he lived up to them all. A true gentleman, skilled and sociable guide, who did his best to give us the very best experience.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely worth doing. Take a range of clothing as the weather in mid May was unpredictable but temperatures made for comfortable cycling.

Most Inspirational Moment

The best day for me was the first day where we cycled all day in hot weather, had an amazing lunch and then ended the day with a boat ride to the blue grotto. The swim in the sea was the perfect way to end a long hot day in the saddle.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Witout Paolo this trip would not have been as amazing as it was. With his guidance, we always felt safe and well looked after. He planned every minute of our day to perfection including adjusting for weather and group preferences. He even booked all our dinners making it so easy for us to relax after our rides knowing we did not have to plan anything. He was truly the best part of the trip!

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip was amazing but be ready for busy roads.

A billiant ride along the coast

This cycling trip was an amazing way to see the region. The days before Amalifi we're a great mix of seaside views, authentic food and rustic towns. There aren't too many tourists around which is really nice. It feels like the real Italy. We then spent the last 3 days...

A great trip to a beautiful part of Italy

Cycling holidays in Italy are always good - it’s the combination of the exercise, the food and the towns and this one gives you the amazing Amalfi coast as well. The trip is a great way to see it . The main towns of Amalfi and Positano are pretty popular...

Most Inspirational Moment

The last day of cycling - cycling the Amalfi coast road itself and going over the hill to Sorrento for lunch with the view of Vesuvius across the bay. The ‘free day’ walk up to Ravello and then down to Amalfi itself was wonderful too. And Paestum!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Super. Paulo is experienced, calm and knowledgeable, has excellent English and is very good company. Emilio our driver/ mechanic was excellent too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Compared with the two other Exodus ‘moderates’ we’ve done, this has shorter distances but longer ascents. As my wife isn’t keen on long ascents, and as I like to take lots of photos on the way, we decided to have e-bikes. It worked very well. Our group of 11 was pretty fast. Having E-bikes meant that we caused very little ‘waiting / catching up’ time and we never worried about how we would do on the tougher days. We generally kept in the middle of the group unless I was taking photos and fell behind. The e-bikes were of course heavier than normal but easy to get used to and had great battery life. I was worried it would mean no exercise but in fact I was in control and could still give myself a work out. I mainly used ‘eco’ unless I was behind and catching-up the group. The e-bike made the trip for my wife . After ten group cycling holidays, we were thinking of packing it in, but we now know we can continue something we really enjoy. The e-bike made this otherwise tricky ‘moderate’ very doable for us. Note: cycling the Amalfi coast road takes a bit of getting used to. It seems pretty ‘hairy’ when you start early in the morning; there are plenty of buses and motor bikes as well as cars and if you’re a nervous rider it may not be for you. But you do get used to it and you realise that the locals generally know what they’re doing. When you come back in the afternoon it’s less busy, you know what to expect and it’s fantastic - the highlight of the trip and a memorable day’s cycling you won’t forget.

Suggestions

We also wanted to walk ‘The Path of the Gods’, experience Naples and visit Pompeii and Heracleum. So we booked a ‘land only’ package, flew out on the group flight but booked ourselves a later return flight. This allowed us additional nights in Bomerano for our extra walking days and in Naples for our extra sightseeing days. That way we had the lovely cycling around Cilento and Paestum, the amazing cycling and walking in the Amalfi peninsula plus the fab vibe and ancient history of Naples. It was pretty easy to arrange.

Great Cycling and Great Guide

Arrived in Naples to heavy rain....however Sunday started cloudy but warm and the weather just kept improving. Hotels were very good, perhaps Hotel Rita could be improved in the evening meal and breakfast (Buffalo Burgers - avoid). Lunchtimes gave us a good variety of Italian food. Cycling on the actual...

Most Inspirational Moment

Memorable moments rather than inspiring was eating fresh mulberries at our lunchtime stop, who could forget our very cheery host. Watching fireflies was brilliant. The Temples etc at Paestum was amazing

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paolo, what a great leader, lots of interesting information pitched at the right time with the right amount of detail, really helped to make the holiday full and terrific. The bike support was excellent .

Wonderful biking adventure on the Amalfi Coast

8 bikers and our wonderful guide Sara enjoyed a beautiful week visiting the Cilento National Park and Amalfi Coast.

Most Inspirational Moment

All our riders completed the five days of biking covering more than 240 km of undulating terrain and with vertical climbs totaling over 4000 meters. None of us needed to use the support van at any time during the rides.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sara was a very knowledgeable and experienced guide who provided us with much local knowledge and insights. She made sure that all riders were doing well and staying safe along the challenging route. Sara also provided us with optional walking tours in addition to the standard itinerary. Sara showed genuine enthusiasm for her work.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As others have stated, it would be very helpful to try to prepare on some hills. The electric bike may be a consideration to take a little of the edge off the longer climbs.

Suggestions

My fellow travelers were a great group to travel with and got along very well with each other and were very supportive. I cannot thank them enough for their comradery.

The holiday I didn't know I needed

A lovely itinerary, brilliant leader, really nice group, trip well paced and everything was so thoughtfully organised.

Most Inspirational Moment

There wasn't just one - the whole thing was great, riding without my sunglasses so I could enjoy the colour of the hills and think how lucky I am that I can do trips like this.

Thoughts on Group Leader

- Paolo is an excellent leader - He was calm and clear throughout - Our safety was paramount in his mind and he was always looking out for us - The organisation was excellent, always lovely lunches and dinners - a lot of that seemed down to the relationships Paolo in his network - Not only was he accomplished in the area of cycling, he is also clearly passionate about the history of the region and its impact on society - He also had great support staff such as Emilio and Raphaello

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some people ponder over the 3 / moderate rating - I think it's accurate as we took plenty of (needed) breaks to recharge. However there are plenty of hills and so inevitably there will be challenging moments. It was a really friendly group - ranging in age from 49 to 82 - and a mix of standard and e-bikes, so there was something for everyone.

Suggestions

The route was beautiful and we enjoyed fantastic food. By the time we finished the trip there was no one under 50 left. :) That might have involved a big birthday!
