Best Places for Family Walking Holidays

Amazon Rainforest: Spanning a huge area of north-western Brazil, Peru and Columbia in South America, the Amazon Rainforest is the largest in the world and is known for its rich biodiversity. The forest is home to extraordinary wildlife such as various species of monkeys, birds, reptiles and insects that can be found hiding among its leafy canopies. This is a great place to visit with the family, especially if they love wild and wonderful nature. Head to Tres Chimbadas Lake to see macaws, monkeys or black alligators or visit the Amazon Basin to get a glimpse of the river otter.

Banff National Park: Canada’s most prolific national park, Banff sprawls through the heart of the Canadian Rockies and its rugged peaks, glaciers and pine forests make up an exceptionally diverse landscape for epic walks. Everywhere you look you’ll see ancient natural wonders that have been created over time, making Banff the oldest national park in Canada. As well as encountering a local bear or two (from a distance!), there are many walking routes that guide you among hot springs, mighty pine forests and emerald lakes where snow-dusted mountains fringe the shore. A gondola ride to the summit of Sulphur Mountain is an exciting way to experience the brilliance of the park and take in the panoramic views.

The Dordogne: The Dordogne is a stunningly beautiful region of southwest France, nuzzled between the Pyrenees and the Loire Valley. It is synonymous with the river of the same name which snakes among prehistoric caves, ancient forests and medieval villages. The Perigord Noir is an extremely picturesque area for walking with its oak and chestnut forests and dusty chateaux that peer over the valley from steep clifftops. Along the way you’ll discover the history of the Dordogne at pretty villages where ancient sites such as the Benedictine Abbaye Sainte-Marie can be found. The Grottes de Lacave is a great place to explore with the kids. An electric train takes you on an exciting journey through Jurassic limestone caverns where ultraviolet light illuminates the underground lakes, fascinating rock features and stalactites.

Jasper National Park: Another of Canada’s great natural parks is Jasper National Park, the largest in the country, covering over 4,000 square miles. The Icefields Parkway is a famous drive that cuts through the glorious Rocky Mountains, where you’ll see alpine lakes, dramatic wilderness and hanging glaciers. This is a road trip like no other but if you’re eager to feel the ground beneath your feet, you can walk across a section of the enormous Athabasca Glacier in the Columbia Icefield. One of the best ways to really appreciate the wild beauty of Jasper National Park is to camp. Sleeping beneath the star-studded sky and listening to the sounds of the wild is just incredible and will be an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life. But if its epic views that pique your interest, take the cable car up Whistler Mountain to get a birds-eye perspective on the immensity of Jasper.

Amalfi Coast: Stretching along the coastline of southern Italy, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful in Europe with colourful houses peppering the hillsides and gorgeous beaches lapped by the warm, Mediterranean waters. But tucked away among different corners of the region you’ll find a whole host of historic sites that appear to have been frozen in time.  At the cliffside village of Positano you can follow ancient trails that wander between ancient buildings like the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta with its 13th-century statue of the Virgin Mary. Or take a trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii, an unfortunate city that was buried beneath a cloud of ash following the eruption of Mt Vesuvius. The well-preserved site gives you an insight into Roman life as you explore the remains of homes, bath houses and bakeries.

This was a truly delightful holiday – one of my best ever. Beautiful, inspiring places to visit. Fabulous hotel with welcoming staff and delicious food. An amazing local tour guide who made us feel like VIPs. An itinerary custom-designed to delight all the family. Opportunities for the kids to learn to make local dishes in the hotel kitchen. A lovely tour group who we got on so well with. If exodus do other such holidays will join in an instant.

A great trip well organised. On the family trip, but with a teenager she was a little board. Very suitable for young children. Felt the walk was too short for adults around Vesuvius crater, so that was disappointing. Capri was spectacular, but again the tour around the island was very short, so you felt you didn’t full see the caves.

I can’t fault this trip. An excellent balance of guided tours and beach time/down time. I have to say that our guide Eduardo was a gem. Exodus are extremely fortunate to have him working for them. He is a gold mine of knowledge, full of conversation and great with the kids. I am sure that our experience and access to places you would never be able to reach are down to him. The pizza making was brilliant and the kids even joined the chef to cook our dinner one night! Thank you Exodus but more so thank you Eduardo.
