- Where to Travel in August
With the Masai Mara migration season in full swing, it’s arguably one of the best places to travel to in August, but with summer festivals in Croatia and longer daylight hours in Estonia, you have plenty of choice on where to go this month.
NAMIBIA
It’s prime time for game viewing
August is the peak season for spotting elephants, giraffes and lions in Namibia, as little rainfall means they congregate around waterholes which makes them easier to spot. Even though it’s warmer, you’ll need to pack layers for cooler nights if you want to sleep under canvas on a camping safari. August is a great month to cycle in Namibia and take in its otherworldly landscapes as temperatures usually sit comfortably around 25C.
CROATIA
Enjoy the summer festivals
While it may be tempting to visit European hotspots once the crowds have dissipated, the joy of exploring places like Croatia in August means you can witness the Summer Festival in Dubrovnik and enjoy the dry and hot weather. It’s also a perfect time to get out on the water, by taking a boat to Mljet National Park for a picnic or visiting Korčula island to explore a maze of lanes in the medieval walled town.
ESTONIA
Soak up the longer evenings
After July, August is the second warmest month in Estonia, with pleasant daily temperatures hovering in the early twenties. The daylight hours are also longer this time of year too, with locals affectionately calling their evenings, “white nights” as the North Pole tips towards the sun. Discover the architectural wonders of Tallinn and the forest trails across Lahemaa National Park, or journey through Otepaa, “Estonia’s Switzerland” on a cycling adventure.
KENYA
Watch the Great Migration at its peak
Often called the greatest show on Earth, the Great Migration reaches Kenya’s Masai Mara each August. Around 1.2 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra journey 1,000km from Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area and back again. Thundering river crossings, close encounters with predators, and vast, moving herds make this one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife spectacles. Visit Kenya to witness this awe-inspiring event for yourself.
ICELAND
Experience raw, untamed beauty
Thanks to mild temperatures and long daylight hours, the dramatic landscapes of Iceland are at their best in August. It’s the perfect time to explore cascading waterfalls, volcanic terrain and glacier-fed lagoons, with extended daylight allowing you to make the most of every moment. Venture deeper into the wild, where stark coastlines, vast glaciers and the remote beauty of the Eastern Fjords await.
