- Where to Travel in January
The best place to travel in January depends on your wanderlust: if you’re in search of sun, conditions are excellent in the southern hemisphere, but to witness the aurora borealis, head northwards.
PATAGONIA
Ideal temperatures for trekking
January marks the peak of summer in Patagonia, the ideal time to fulfil that dream of visiting the southern tip of South America. It offers perfect conditions for trekking, with long days, landscapes in full bloom, and comfortable temperatures. So, why not join us on a hike through Torres del Paine National Park in Chile or trek towards the towering Fitzroy Massif in Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina?
ICELAND
The perfect time for glacier trekking
Iceland sparkles in January with snow-blanketed landscapes and frozen waterfalls – best seen in Thingvellir National Park. Glaciers are covered with fresh blue ice, ideal for glacier trekking in crampons. It’s also a great time to visit the iconic Diamond Beach – the colder temperatures mean you’ll see more (and larger) chunks of glacial ice resting on the black sands.
COSTA RICA
Soak up the sun in Costa Rica
If you want to maximise your Costa Rica experience, visit in the middle of dry season, when the weather is generally warmer, the humidity is lower, and there’s minimal rainfall. These are optimal conditions for so much of what people love about the country: wildlife watching, hiking up volcanoes, flying over the rainforest on a zipline, and relaxing on sandy beaches. Pura vida, indeed.
SWEDEN
See the Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle
Venture deep into the Arctic Circle for a true winter thrill. Vast, snowy landscapes set the scene for unforgettable adventures in Sweden: glide through forests on snowshoes, race across ice on a husky sled, or power through the wilderness on a snowmobile. As night falls, look up: this is prime time to witness the dance of the Northern Lights.
INDIA
Optimum conditions for cycling
If you want to avoid the sweltering summer sun, January is a great month to visit India – particularly for active adventures, such as cycling. In the tropical south, including Kerala, there’s little rain and a refreshing coastal breeze; while in the northwest, Rajasthan has average highs of 22C, perfect for riding between the ancient temples, monuments, and forts.
