Walking the Amalfi Coast

This was my first time traveling for pleasure completely alone, and I didn’t really know what to expect. I think I thought it would mostly be a nice break in between jobs, perhaps some time alone for self-reflection and contemplation in a stunningly beautiful place. It was all that but actually so much more for me.

As a self-described “city slicker,” I was pretty much a novice at this hiking thing, and the week was full of experiences that kept pushing me, and challenging me to grow. Each day felt special and offered something different. Pictures cannot do justice to what you need to see in person. In these beautiful coastal towns, when the sun melts into the horizon, and the dusky mountains hug the sky, you don’t know where one ends and one begins. I went in November, which is the off season, and was anxious about how the rain/weather might impact the tour. But even on the day(s) that it rained, that only added to the atmosphere and sense of adventure. It was special seeing the Amalfi Coast at a time when there were no tourists.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many highlights, but for me, the most dramatic, climactic one was climbing Mount Vesuvius, a volcano that is still considered active. Climbing inside the rim of the crater, you can see Pompeii from a dizzying height and even feel the steam that wisps from the cracks in the rock. It was like drinking from a heady elixir that produced fear, exhilaration and a sense of accomplishment, all at once. My heart was still in my throat as I descended back down the volcano, but I could not have felt more alive. A once in a lifetime moment.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paul McDermott was our leader and he is phenomenal. Although he is inherently modest, you could tell that his 35 or so years of experience in the army had trained him to be the type of leader who naturally elicits trust and confidence from his team. As I was a "city slicker" who had never been on a hiking tour like this, I was anxious about how I would do, but I felt safe in Paul's hands - he was so clearly a master of the terrain. It was also evident that Paul must have diligently been doing work behind the scenes to make our tour run smoothly and seamlessly, but he did it with such quiet aplomb and grace that he never made it seem like work; and he added thoughtful touches to help make the tour special, like carrying bottles of wine in his backpack while hiking for several hours, without telling us, just so that we could lazily savor a drink in the sunny piazza during our lunch break on the last day of the tour. It was nice hearing about the Amalfi Coast's history and culture from Paul's perspective, as he is a worldly traveler who has a natural affinity for soaking up the local culture. Most importantly though, Paul was always engaged with the group, and was deeply, sometimes it even seemed telepathically, attuned to the needs of the group as a whole as well as the unique personalities of each individual. By the end of tour, I thought of him not only as our guide but our friend.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware that if you go during off-peak season, like in November, as I did, there will be certain things that will be closed and activities that might not be available. For example, I believe during the summer months, you are able to take a boat ride, which is supposed to be lovely. Also, when we ended up in some of the resort towns, some of the sights / shops were closed. Personally, however, this was not an issue for me at - I appreciated that we were able to see the Amalfi Coast in a way that not everybody gets to see, and it felt more intimate and authentic. You should also come prepared for the weather at the time you go. I packed varying layers of fleeces and rain-proof gear, which came in handy. At certain points of the hike, I wore short-sleeved T-shirts and sweated through my gear. When we went to Pompeii, it was freezing in the morning, and that was the one day that I had left my extra fleece in the hotel. Best to pack everything in your backpack just in case.

Annapurna in Luxury TNX

Another great trip and an enjoyable diverse itinerary from, temples to trekking, to white water rafting, to safari. Some long days transferring between sites, but well worth it in the end. Great company, excellent leader and a wonderful, friendly country well worth visiting.

Most Inspirational Moment

On the trek being woken at 6.15am by a knock on the door from the porters with a cup of coffee/tea and coming out of the lodge to see the mountain range appearing above the clouds. Unfortunately, we only had a brief sight of the Fishtail, but the trek to the Himalaya Lodge was well worth the climb. White water rafting down the Seti River was great fun as was the search for one-horned rhino at Chitwan.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chandra was great fun. He was funny, became part of the team and went to great lengths to pass on his love of his country and the local traditions. On the last night of the trek, all the porters, the Ghurkhas, the group and Chandra danced the night away. Whilst it was no "Strictly", happy hour freed our inhibitions and everyone got up and danced (sort of)!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for early mornings and long days travelling. Some part of the treks have numerous steps, if you are used to walking with poles, take them with you. Sink plugs come in handy. We spent approximately £250 each on food, drinks, etc, but if you enjoy spending money on trinkets, presents, etc then you definitely need to allow more.

A taste of Cuba

A good week. Being on a tour sliced through the hassle of organisation and was a great queuebuster when visiting museums and events. Great variety of things to see and do in a very colourful varied interesting country

Most Inspirational Moment

Salsa dancing

Thoughts on Group Leader

Advice for Potential Travellers

Extend the trip preferably at the end for a few days either in Havana or to go to the beach

Madagaskar cycling

Altogether a good trip, would do it again!

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the people happy, although they are very poor (in western standard).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Friendly and helpful, knows a lot about the nature and animals.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring your own moskito -net, because most hotels don't provide it. Avoid milk and cheese and yoghurt .....

Andes to amazon

Excellent, varied trip

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing a hoatzin.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eddie was first class, full of enthusiasm and knowledge and a really nice man

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare to enjoy yourselves.

Everest Base Camp -Nov 2016

Amazing trip of a lifetime. We were very lucky with having blue skies and sunshine for the whole 2 weeks. The scenery was fantastic – you get a crick in your neck as you are continually looking up in awe at these mountains.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were 3 inspirational moments The first was when we went into Tengboche monastery where the monks were celebrating a festival that only happens once a year. Some members or our group were able to present gifts to them and got a blessing from the head monk. The second was that all members of our group reached EBC even though some had been through a lot up to that point, they still managed to push through to get to the camp. The third was when 10 out of our 14 group setoff and all 10 of us summitted Kala Patthar - seeing the sun rise and getting a good view of Everest was well worth it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pasang Bomjan was our leader and his vast experience and understanding of our needs really made the trip special for us. I felt he went the extra mile to help us adjust and to help us achieve our goals on this trip. His knowledge of Bhuddism, the local customs and his sense of humour really helped us through some tough bits. I thoroughly recommend him as a leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take plenty of painkillers - Solpadeine is good as it dissolves and clears your headaches very quickly. Merino wool base layers and underwear are great and light to carry. Another very useful piece of kit that is not on Exodus list is a silk sleeping bag liner - my friends (who have previously trekked in the Himalayas) lent me one - it may be thin but it is amazing at keeping you warm . I am about to go and buy one for myself right now, Do not underestimate the cold - you need good quality thick winter / hiking gloves and liners (silk). The Camelbak tubes freeze on the early morning hikes - EBC and Kala Patthar - take a separate water bottle and keep it close to your body so you do not get dehydrated

Cycling through Rajasthan

A fantastic whirlwind assault on the senses – incredible sights, smells and wonderful children waving us on throughout the villages.
Delhi was very smoggy and choked to death with traffic, but still amazing views from the coach window as we battled the congestion, but after the overnight train, the visuals start.

Most Inspirational Moment

We were invited, or press ganged into a wedding, which was a real feast for the eyes, to see how a diiferent culture celebrate here - horses, parades, fireworks and entire banquet filled the hotel grounds. Of course the Taj is an excellent feat in building, but Udaipur palace interior was filled with impressive craftsmans skills. Though ultimately, its the people, the smiles, the friendliness that catches your heart

Thoughts on Group Leader

Manu and Rigsin were exceptional, the knowledge of India and its people, a question was never unanswered. Whilst we were there, we had the problem of the 'black money' - which caused a huge problem for everybody, and given the circumstances Manu helped out wherever he could, and even beyond his duties. Ali and Ramu always helped with water and the bike maintenance, and Mr Singh an amazing driver through those conditions

Advice for Potential Travellers

Check the weather before you go - it was much hotter than the average temperature on Exodus website If you see something, buy it, as youll never have the chance to buy it again - we found Johdpur market (clock tower) wonderful, but held out for Jaipur, which was disappointing and a very long day on and off the bus. Its a great holiday, but be prepared for non stop adventure - rest when you get back home!!!!

Cuban highlights ride

Excellent trip, (I was in Jane’s group, see review below) Freddy was indeed excellent, in addition to being a great cycle guide his knowledge and passion for Cuba knew no bounds, I came away refreshed and more knowledgeable after a most enjoyable holiday

Most Inspirational Moment

The whole trip!

Thoughts on Group Leader

excellent, difficult to see how he could have been any better

Advice for Potential Travellers

cash points available in Havana and Trinidad

Amazing trip

My husband and I did this holiday in November 2015 so it has taken me a little while to write this review ! Although I cycle regularly since taking early retirement and he is a very fit cyclist I was anxious about the cycling content. However to reassure anyone who is worried, there is brilliant support and at any stage you can hop in the support bus for a rest as each days cycle is broken up into segments of 15 to 20 km etc . I wanted to see Vietnam and Cambodia and he wanted a cycling holiday and so this was the compromise and it was totally brilliant. There was about 17 in our group, and I immediately found out that most were much better cyclists than me. For the first couple of days in Thailand I found it quite taxing as the cycles were long , but the snacks after each stage more than made up for it when you re-energised and rehydrated. The feeling of achievement at the end of each day was amazing. The sights were fantastic. I thought the Thailand section not as inspiring as Cambodia and Vietnam but it was all part of the experience having never been to any of these countries before. The accommodation was pretty good in most of the places we stayed. The night in the traditional Mekon delta guesthouse was absolutely fine although not perhaps my trip highlight although I understand how it would be with others as the holiday info suggested. You even had a shower and ensuite in the guesthouse rooms although the walls were literally paper thin and the setting was beautiful. The various ferry and border crossings we did on our bikes were an adventure in themselves. All in all an awesome holiday

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling through the temple complex of Angkor was quite amazing as was cycling though the streets of Siem Reap with the traffic. We felt perfectly safe with our guides in the traffic. Cambodia was a fascinating country and deeply moving at the various sites we visited in Phnom Penn. Cycling through remote Vietnamese villages with children high fiving us as we went past was just wonderful . Saigon itself was a fascinating places and the visit to the Vietnam war tunnels was very thought provoking . The whole trip was fantastic

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader was Moh and she was quite superb. She looked out for any cyclists tiring, She arranged and sorted all the logistics and she was really a credit to Exodus

Advice for Potential Travellers

It wasn't clear to me from the trip notes or photos on the website just what people wore for the cycling. You can definitely wear proper padded cycling shorts, and some of our group wore ordinary shorts over the top but it didn't actually matter whether you did or not in terms of decorum in the various countries which was something I had worried about ! You had to put on trousers for the temple visits etc in some places anyway .I would totally recommend cycling shorts with plenty of vaseline around the leg area and although it can be very very hot they don't seem to rub or chafe or make you overheat. Also I took a gel saddle cover which was essential and many others took their own saddle. You don't really need your own energy drinks and gels etc as this is all provided. Also if you get a bit fed up with regional food, by the time you get to Siam Reap and go off on your own for free time there are plenty of Western food places as well ! Sunscreen is essential. Many of the hotels stayed in had wifi or a computer in the lobby so you can keep in touch from time to time

Inca trail

Wonderful trip, really. I had planned to walk the trail for a few years but was worried about my level of fitness. It was fine however. Others in the group struggled more but even those with no experience of walking at all managed to complete the trail and were well supported by our tour guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to say, it was just amazing. The last night of camping on the trail was in a high camp over looking ruins and with the most amazing views and changing skies.... Reaching the top of dead widows pass felt like such an achievement and the view was stunning. I might have shed the odd tear but don't tell anyone......

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great guy. I think its a very difficult trip to arrange given the different levels of fitness of people on it however he was supportive and fun to have around.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The trail itself was quite cold so make sure you take layers. You are, of course, limited in what can be taken on the trail itself so make sure you have light weight cold weather clothes. Walking poles are absolutely essential as coming down from Dead Widows pass is murder on the knees! Take a blow up cushion too as they weren't provided with the sleeping bags. If you have your own inflatable sleeping mat, consider taking it along. The ones provided were not very reliable and its very cold if they deflate on you overnight.....
