This colourful train journey is surely one of the most steep and spectacular in all the world. The incredibly impressive zigzag railroad was built to overcome to the difficult crossing over the Devil’s Nose with its almost perpendicular walls. If the weather is clear you can see volcanoes as the railway chugs slowly down a steep series of switchbacks with awe-dropping drops. The train operates from Tuesdays to Sundays departing from Alausi or Thursdays to Fridays departing from Riobamba. While recovering from the mind-blowing descent you can lap up the views of the narrow gorge of the Chanchán river and learn about the traditions of the indigenous Puruhuas in Sibambe near the base.
