Start with a tour of Quito’s historic centre, a World Heritage site. Led by our tour leader, we visit the highlights, including the Plaza de la Independencia, home to the Carondelet Palace and Metropolitan Cathedral, followed by the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, famous for its gold-decorated interior.

After, we head to Casa Agave to learn about the cultural and economic importance of agave in Ecuador and enjoy a tasting of agave products, including miske, an indigenous alcoholic drink. Lunch is served at this venue, a delicious sample of local cuisine.

In the afternoon, visit the Intiñan Equator Museum, which is located near the equator line. This fun interactive museum explores indigenous culture and traditions, as well as unique phenomena related to the geographic location.

Travel (two hours) to Cotopaxi National Park in the morning, home to Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world.

Here, we embark on a one-hour hike through the stunning park landscapes, which sit at 12,470ft-15,750ft (3,800m-4,800m) above sea level. Our route takes us to Limpiopungo Lagoon, whose waters can reflect the volcano.

Enjoy lunch at La Cienega, a colonial hacienda turned restaurant, eating traditional Ecuadorian dishes in a historic setting. Following lunch, we transfer (two hours) to Baños de Agua Santa, a town known for its thermal baths and adventure activities. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore, visit cafes, or relax in the thermal baths.

After, we return to the vehicle and drive to the Swing at the End of the World, where you can swing out over a cliff to enjoy panoramic views of the valleys and mountains.

Leave Baños in the morning and transfer (three hours) to Tena, the gateway to the Ecuadorian Amazon. The journey takes us through spectacular landscapes, from Andean mountains to lush rainforest.

Enjoy lunch in Tena, then continue to our rainforest lodge – a 30-minute drive, followed by a 45-minute canoe ride.

Settle in and enjoy dinner, before we take a 45-minute night walk around the lodge with an expert naturalist to discover our new surroundings.

There are fantastic sounds to listen out for, including the calls of frogs, oropendolas, jays and a variety of insects – a wonderful experience amid the rainforest humidity.

Accommodation: Liana Lodge (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Begin with a visit to amaZOOnico, taking a short motor canoe ride to get there. A rescue and rehabilitation facility for jungle animals, it’s home to various Amazonian species, such as monkeys, toucans and ocelots.

During the visit, we learn about their conservation efforts and the threats these animals face in their natural habitat. Guides provide detailed information about the different animals and the stories behind each rescue.

After returning to Liana Lodge for lunch, we embark on an exploration of the Amazon jungle guided by local experts who show the rich biodiversity of the Amazon ecosystem.

During the hike, we learn about medicinal plants, local flora and fauna, and survival techniques used by Indigenous communities.

Bid farewell to the Amazon after breakfast and head to Papallacta, a town renowned for its thermal baths. A drive (at least 3hr 30min) takes us through the Amazon rainforest to the high Andes, offering diverse views of Ecuadorian landscapes.

This afternoon, rejuvenate in the thermal waters at the hotel (which are heated by underground volcanic activity and said to have therapeutic properties) or explore the nearby trails.

Leave the hotel around 5am – taking a box breakfast with you – for our transfer (50 minutes) to Quito Airport, where we catch our flight to San Cristóbal in the Galapagos via Guayaquil. Our Galapagos tour leader (an official naturalist guide) will be at the airport to take you to the hotel for check-in and our first briefing about our time in the archipelago.

We have time to explore the town and enjoy a restaurant lunch before our visit to La Lobería, a wonderful beach surrounded by mangroves, volcanic rocks and sea lion colonies. It’s a perfect spot to snorkel, enjoy beach time, or have a short walk along the shore.

Accommodation: Paraiso Insular Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast
Highlights of Ecuador & the Galapagos

Start your day with an exciting tour to Isla Lobos, a small island near San Cristóbal. This excursion takes you by boat to one of the best spots for observing sea lions in their natural habitat.

Isla Lobos is also an excellent location for birdwatching, including frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies. Snorkel in the clear waters around the island, swimming with marine turtles, rays and, occasionally, whitetip reef sharks.

After, we head to Playa Ochoa, a white-sand beach with turquoise waters. It’s ideal for relaxing, while also offering excellent birdwatching and snorkelling opportunities.

Enjoy lunch on board the boat as we head back to town for a free afternoon.

Accommodation: Paraiso Insular Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch

A three-hour navigation by motorboat takes us to Floreana, one of the first Galapagos Islands to be inhabited. En route, we may see whales, dolphins and seabirds.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we spend an hour exploring the highlands, visiting lava caves once used by pirates and seeing a large enclosure of Galapagos giant tortoises.

In the afternoon, we transfer (2hr 30min to three hours) to Isabela by speedboat.

Accommodation: San Vicente Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch
Highlights of Ecuador & the Galapagos

Spend 15 minutes sailing to the islets and lava channels of Las Tintoreras, one of the best places in the Galapagos to see whitetip reef sharks, penguins and sea lions. A 40-minute walk takes us to an excellent place to snorkel!

This afternoon, we hike 6mi (10km) to the Wall of Tears, a sad reminder of Isabela’s very different past when it was used as a penal colony. Between 1946 and 1959, convicts were forced to build this wall from huge blocks of lava as a form of punishment, which, combined with the harsh conditions, led to many deaths.

Accommodation: San Vicente Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Navigate by motorboat (two hours to 2hr 30min) to Santa Cruz very early this morning. Upon arrival, we visit the Charles Darwin Research Centre, where scientists come from all over the world to study the flora and fauna.

In the afternoon, we visit Tortuga Bay, a long stretch of white sand that’s regarded as one of the best beaches in the Galapagos. The trail leading to the beach is paved and takes 45 minutes to one hour, with possibilities to observe Galapagos finches and lizards along the way. The beach is scattered with marine iguanas, which lie among the clusters of black rocks or stroll along the sand. Turtles can sometimes be seen in the water, though swimming is not recommended due to the strong currents.

Accommodation: Lobo de Mar Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast
Highlights of Ecuador & the Galapagos

Our first stop on our bay tour is the Canal de Tiburones. Here, we follow a small trail and hope to see whitetip reef sharks and, if lucky, lava herons. After, we visit Canal del Amor. At this beautiful turquoise water channel, we hope to snorkel among sea lions and marine iguanas, while Sally Lightfoot crabs and blue-footed boobies rest on the rocks. We continue with a visit to Playa de los Perros, where the largest marine iguanas on the islands live, and finish with snorkelling at Las Grietas, a lava formation with giant walls.

In the afternoon, we transfer (40 minutes) to the giant tortoise reserve in the highlands, a great place to see giant tortoises in the wild. There is also time to visit underground caves formed by lava that once flowed here.

Accommodation: Lobo de Mar Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch

After a few days following the footsteps of Darwin, Cousteau and world-renowned scientists, it is time to say goodbye to the Enchanted Islands.

After breakfast, we drive to Baltra Airport – bidding a fond farewell to our Galapagos tour leader – and fly to Quito via Guayaquil.

Our Quito tour leader meets us upon arrival and our groups normally gather for a final dinner this evening, a chance to celebrate the adventures we’ve had together.

Accommodation: Vieja Cuba Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Our adventure ends after breakfast this morning. If you’d like to stay in Quito beyond the trip, speak to your sales representative to book extra nights.

Accommodation

Hotels, lodges and guesthouses

Accommodation is a real highlight on this Ecuadorian adventure, as we stay in a mixture of hotels, lodges and guesthouses. The places we typically use are on the day-to-day itinerary; however, below are a few of the notable stays on this trip.

Upgraded rooms are available on Day 3, 4 and 7 of the itinerary – speak to your sales representative for more details.

Baños: La Floresta Hotel (nights 3-4)

Highlights of Ecuador & the Galapagos

At the foot of a forested slope, La Floresta is bright and cheery with a mural-painted front and lush gardens in a courtyard. There’s plenty of Ecuadorian design elements, plus the location makes exploring Baños easy.

Tena (Amazon Rainforest): Liana Lodge (nights 5-6)

Highlights of Ecuador & the Galapagos

Immerse yourself in the Amazon Rainforest with a stay at Liana Lodge, which can only be reached by boat. The cabins are modest, but the location is exceptional, right next to the Arajuno river. There’s a water-view bar, plus the in-house naturalists bring the sounds, sights and wildlife of the Amazon to life.

Papallacta: Termas de Papallacta (night 7)

Highlights of Ecuador & the Galapagos

The on-site hot spring pools surrounded by vegetation make Termas de Papallacta a relaxing place to say – some even say the geothermal waters have healing powers. For further relaxation, the pools also have hydromassage jets. We sleep in wooden bungalows, plus there’s a restaurant serving international dishes.

Galapagos: Hotels (nights 8-13)

In the Galapagos, we use small, family-run hotels and guesthouses. They are well located for our adventures, meaning we can spend as much time as possible exploring the extraordinary landscapes and wildlife of the Enchanted Islands.

Worth knowing

  • Galapagos accommodation: Given the remote and isolated nature of the Galapagos, accommodation options are limited, and you may experience occasional hot water outages, blackouts, and slow wifi. While the facilities may not match the comfort levels of the mainland, the unique opportunity to explore this extraordinary destination makes it a worthwhile experience.

Post-trip Extensions

Exclusive Add-ons

Sacha Lodge Add-on Tour

Highlights of Ecuador & the Galapagos

Travel into the untamed wilderness of the Ecuadorian Amazon, where the secluded Sacha Lodge sits immersed in its rainforest surroundings. From this tranquil spot overlooking Pilchicocha Lake, wildlife abounds. Blue-morph butterflies flit through the air, giant otters glide underneath the water and eight species of monkey grace the forest canopy. This expedition lets you experience the variety of the rainforest: take part in forest walks, explore by dug-out canoe, join a night-time exploration or tower above the trees on the Canopy Walk.

The detailed itinerary is here, or speak to your sales representative for more details.

Essential Information

This trip is rated Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings, visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip, please contact us.

This trip is ideal if you are physically fit and don’t mind being in the sun. It will appeal to those interested in the astonishing variety of mainland Ecuador (highlands, rainforest and volcanoes), plus the landscape and wildlife of the Galapagos.

Altitude and walks: Some of the areas visited are at high altitude and some short walks (normally one to three hours) are planned. It can be muddy or slippery in the Amazon, depending on the weather, and there are some steep sections (Day 6).

Itinerary: It is not always possible to follow a strict schedule due to weather and sea conditions, sometimes it is better to do the planned activities in a different order (but almost always on the same day as this activity is originally planned).

Flying to the Galapagos: Time spent at the airport (both on mainland Ecuador and the Galapagos) is currently taking longer than usual due to the implementation of a new system for declaring foods and goods to enter the Galapagos.

Boat transfers: Timings provided in the itinerary are approximations and depend on weather and sea conditions.

Ecuador

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Ecuador. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

Entering the Galapagos

  • There is a compulsory Galapagos Tax of US$200, which can only be paid locally in cash (US dollars) and will be collected by the National Park Service on arrival at San Cristóbal.
  • You also need a Transit Control Card. This is included in the cost of the tour and will be organised by your tour leader before entering the Galapagos.

For lunch and dinner, the tour leader recommends options in convenient locations, usually booking restaurants and eating with the group. For the included meals at restaurants, they are usually a set menu with two or three options.

Worth knowing

  • The choice of meals in some areas of the Galapagos can be limited but special dietary requirements can usually be catered for if we are advised at the time of booking.

Mainland: In Quito and the highlands, it should be warm by day and generally dry. Maximum daytime temperatures are almost constant throughout the year at 20C (68F), nights 8C (46F). Expect some rain from February to May and October to November but storms, though heavy, are generally short. Quito and the highlands are considered to have quite a pleasant climate, although the evenings can be chilly. In the jungle regions, it is hot with high humidity. There is always a possibility of rain, but not to the extent of spoiling your enjoyment. The driest time in the jungle (in terms of rainfall levels, not number of rainy days) is October to January.

Galapagos: It is possible to visit the Galapagos at any time of year, but seasonal variations affect what you see and there are climatic changes to note. The weather is controlled by the two main ocean currents of the region, the Humboldt, bringing cold water from the Antarctic, and El Nino, which brings tropical water from the Gulf of Panama. How close to the Galapagos they converge (which varies from year to year) is the key to the weather.

  • Dry season: Generally speaking, late May to early December is the cooler dry season. In this period, it is not necessarily dry, as there is a persistent light mist (garúa) and often light drizzle, and the higher mountain slopes are covered in cloud and fog or rain. At this time, the winds are in the southeast and are higher than at other times, so seas can sometimes be choppy (anyone worried about seasickness might prefer to avoid this time). Daytime maximum temperatures are 27C-31C (81F-88F), the cooler months being July to November. In July and August, the fairly strong winds introduce a chill factor, and it can feel quite cold at nights.
  • Wet season: Depending on how close the convergence of the two currents comes to the Galapagos, there may or may not be a wet season from January to April or May. Approximately every seven years, El Nino hits the islands and there are heavy rains in these months. In other years, rain usually falls sporadically from otherwise clear skies. The ocean temperatures are higher, with generally calm seas and strong sunshine: pleasant, but potentially very hot. Apart from an El Nino year, the weather is usually better from December/January to April/May than at other times even if there is some rain, and most people would regard these months as the best time to go.

Great to explore the Galapagos

This is a very varied trip from the beautiful buildings in Quito to the unique Galápagos Islands. Heights of Cotopaxi to Amazon jungle. It is challenging at times especially on the Amazon jungle walk, this was not an easy stroll through a path in the jungle it was at times...

Most Inspirational Moment

I think visiting the devils cauldron waterfall and going behind the cascade of water, the absolute power of nature is breathtaking. Snorkelling and coming face to face with a playfull sea lion or turtle was pretty amazing

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had two leaders one on the mainland who was, I feel, not really up to the job. She was knowledgeable and passionate about her country but organisation and timekeeping was sadly lacking meaning we were mostly late to our destinations cutting any “free” time we had to look about where we were staying. Changes to hotel were not communicated to us prior to arrival, we were disappointed arriving in Banos to find we were staying at a different hotel that did not offer the same facilities as hotel on the trip notes. At the airport she was unaware of current import rules applicable to Galápagos which could have been a disaster for some of the group who had no WiFi connection to allow them to complete customs declaration. In the Galápagos we had Wilson who is a Galápagos guide and was the complete opposite. Kept trip moving to schedule and listened to the needs of the group tweeting the irony where necessary to make the most of out time on the islands. There was a lot of snorkel stops on which Wilson always joined us in the water along with another colleague to ensure none of us encountered any problems whilst in the water.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack for every weather situation. I found a cape was more use than a waterproof jacket especially on the Amazon. Accommodation was in the main basic with the exception of papallacta and Santa Cruz, I do note however the price of this trip has increased considerably so perhaps the standard of accommodation will also improve. I felt the standard of accommodation offered on this trip fell well below the usual exodus “classic” rating. There are plenty of good and reasonably priced restaurants around hotels (except Amazon) most of the hotels we stayed in did not offer evening dining facilities. In Galápagos most of us hired shortie wetsuits which I was grateful for as water was quite cold!

Reply from Exodus

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re very sorry to hear that aspects of your experience on the mainland did not meet your expectations. Daniela, your guide,  has led many Exodus trips and is a knowledgeable and capable leader, however,  it is disappointing to note that her organisation and communication on this occasion did not meet the expectations you’ve come to expect from Exodus. We apologise for any impact this had on your overall enjoyment and can confirm that your feedback will be shared with the local team to help improve processes and ensure that customers on future trips are better supported. Regarding the hotel in Baños, we are sorry to hear that Isla de Baños did not meet your expectations. After reviewing this departure, we noted that La Floresta was unfortunately fully booked at the time of your stay. In such situations, we source an alternative hotel of the same category and star rating, which is why Isla de Baños was arranged. Our trip notes do state that listed hotels may be substituted with “or similar,” but we fully recognise that this change should have been communicated to you in advance. We will be reviewing our internal processes to ensure that any future hotel substitutions are clearly and proactively communicated to travellers. Furthermore, we recognise the challenges you experienced with the new customs declaration requirements at the airport. Although our leaders are provided with updated guidance, the process is still evolving locally and has been causing difficulties for many travellers, especially when WiFi access is limited. We understand how worrying and inconvenient it can be to face unclear procedures at such a crucial stage of the journey, and we are very sorry that this affected your experience. Please be assured that we are monitoring these changes closely with our local partners so we can provide clearer information and better support for future departures. Thank you once again for sharing such valuable feedback as it plays an important role in helping us strengthen communication, improve consistency, and ensure a more seamless experience for all future travellers.
