Peru & Galapagos, with Amazon extension

A fantastic trip and one I would seriously recommend to anyone wishing to combine Inca sites with wildlife and a completely different culture to the UK

Most Inspirational Moment

Viewing Machu Pichu from the Sun Gate. Swimming with turtles off Floriana. Getting so close to the wildlife on Genovesa. The peace and serenity of a canoe ride at Napo, with only the tropical noises to listen to.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack light! Reasonable toiletries provided in all hotels. There is very limited space in the Cachalote cabins (even less so for two single people sharing) so a small squashy bag is much better than a suitcase, Eco-friendly soap and shampoo are provided on board as are towels for use on the beach as well as on board. Take two items of footwear only for Galapagos - a pair of hiking boots for walks on the islands and a pair of sandals for beach or wet landings as we went either barefoot or wore socks on board. Take strong insect repellant for Napo if you are prone to bites (not really needed in the Galapagos though Espanola Island has a lot of very annoying flies which take no notice of any repellants!). Take Magicool and a loose hat if you are going to Napo - we had no rain during the day but it was very humid and hot. Wellingtons are provided by the lodge and they like you to wear these on all land trips, not your own hiking boots (which we took but didn't use so wasted space in the bag!). A pair of light sandals or trainers are ideal for wearing around the lodge or any of the trips where you stay in the canoe.

Cycling the Alfalfi coast

Loved it, great organisation and attention to detail !Our guide’s enthusiasm for the area was inspirational.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of the climb and looking at the beautiful landscapes!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lovely chap!enthusiastic and informative.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Italy more expensive than expected for meals and alcohol .

Picos de Europa

Walking the Picos de Europa in Northern Spain

Most Inspirational Moment

Unfortunately due to injury I couldn't follow the planned walks but had an alternative trip and was able to still appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the area

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alvaro was amazing. He took time to find alternative things to do. He has an excellent attitude as well as being very funny!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Not really just be prepared to have fun and get wet!

Beautiful region, great walks and wine

The Douro Valley is a spectacular region to discover with stunning views and lovely walks. On either side of the Douro River terraced vineyards cover the landscape – this is the only area in the world where Port wine is produced and on this holiday we learnt about the Portuguese history and culture surrounding the process. Several of our walks ended up at a local Quinta (wine farm) where we had the opportunity for wine tasting with a lunch on the terrace which everyone enjoyed. It was a very relaxing and interesting week of walking, with varied routes each day. We barely saw another walker on any of the routes so it felt as though we had the region to ourselves!

Most Inspirational Moment

I really enjoyed the Levada do Piscaredo walk on Day 7 - it was the longest walk that we did but fairly easy walking (no hills), following a waterway dating back to the 13th century. Pretty wildflowers dotted the route and every now and then the views of the river below would come into sight.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nuno was great, a keen walker and outdoor enthusiast, he knew the routes inside out and was great company, introducing the group to local restaurants.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Try the Vinho Verde (green wine) - this was my favourite!

Machu Picchu & Galapagos

It is hard to believe that we could have found a better way of visiting Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands than with Exodus. Our group of 15 ranged in age from 30 to 71 and would highly recommend this holday to anyone in that age range or a bit beyond. This truly is a holiday of a lifetime with everyday providing some new experience and excitement whilst still having time to relax in different situations. The organisation was good, the hotels comfortable and friendly with good breakfasts and the boat, the Cachalote, with only 16 berths plus a great 6 man crew and our guide, the perfect way in which to visit the Galapagos Islands. I cannot recommend this holiday highly enough.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many, almost impossible to say. One would have to be the very fist site of Machu Picchu, quite extraordinary, awe inspiring and no photo can do it justice. Despite this Galapagos was the highlight and the most inspirational moments probably the number and proximity of the birds on Genevosa, the Waved Albatrosses on Espanola and snorkelling with giant turtles, sea lions and the stunning fish.

Highlights of the Amalfi Coast

An interesting and enjoyable week spent with some very nice people. The hotel, Duotorri is run by a friendly family, who are all charming. We are on a plant based diet and they did their utmost to accommodate us, the chef producing some delicious food. The bedroom was comfortable and clean with a small balcony which would be lovely in hot weather.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking the path of the Gods. The day was dull with the threat of rain but that was OK as it was a hot walk! The views are stunning although you have to stop walking to admire them, walking demands attention to your feet and where to put them! I am a vertigo sufferer but managed it well, as I realised life is too short, and I must pull myself together! Glad I did. We didn't do the 700 or even the 1000 or so steps down but caught the bus, and we're glad to see no one else on our group did either!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo Palermo is a charming local man. He loves his country and his enthusiasm is infectious. He greeted us early each day and looked after us like a mother hen. He also seems to know everyone on the Amalfi coast!

Advice for Potential Travellers

We took comfortable trainers, although my husband thought walking boots would have been a good idea for the path of the Gods. Binoculars would have been good there too. Walking poles were available at the hotel to borrow but we took some and we're glad we did, especially for climbing Vesuvio as the ground is very slippery.

Challenging Cycling on a Wonderful Island

This was our second Exodus cycling holiday, and the best so far. We went to Cuba last year which was also designated as “moderate” but the Sardinia profile was much more challenging. However, we chose to go early in the season which meant that it was quiet and the temperature was much more conducive to cycling. Most of the days were much more reasonable from a cycling point of view and the scenery was stunning. Sardinia seems particular uncommercialised and the food was generally excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

An extra early morning optional ride with MicheleQ back to the top of the Passo Montecani from the steep side. By far the toughest climb I've done, but a real sense of achievement. And what a descent!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both our guides, MicheleQ and MicheleZ were terrific. Real gentlemen who made a real effort to look after us and keep the group reasonably together on the road.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There were some very casual cyclists on this trip, who amazed me with their fortitude. I cycle regularly and found it tough, and I think the more practice you can do the better, but don't be too proud to get in the ever-present minibus. Make sure you enjoy it and don't make it a trial! Don't hesitate to stop and take photos.

A memorable first hiking adventure

This was my first overseas hiking adventure and probably would not be the last because of my terrific experience and confidence that I can manage it at my age (65) and with my physical stamina. It was terrific because I signed up only one week before the adventure started and everything was efficiently arranged and there was no hiccup at all (except for flight delay from London to Zagreb which was more an airline problem). The group leader was exceptional and the small group of 13 afforded a rather amicable relationship in no time. Our itinerary and what to expect was explained to us clearly every day and special efforts have been made to cater to our culinary needs in the evenings. Croatia is indeed a very scenic country and you would not regret signing up for this adventure.

Most Inspirational Moment

The climax to me each day was when we reach the the apex of each hike and took in the breathtaking sceneries. The way up was not easy for a novice to mountain hiking but the reward was well worth the efforts. The Dubrovnik Old Town, Zlatni Rat, Diocletian's Roman Palace and Skradinski Buk Waterfalls will all leave me with lasting memories.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent is the only word I would like to describe Zeljko Zarak. He has a very pleasant personality and was able to build up an amicable relationship with everybody in no time. You know he cares like helping the ladies (10 in our group) to transfer their luggages all by himself when the hotels did not offer lift service, taking breaks and pacing the hike so that everybody can manage and giving us loads of information related to the tour and about the country. He also made special effort to arrange for our dinners at night to get a taste of Croatian food at reasonable costs. All in all, he made me feel relaxed and in good hands since the very first day. I will definitely not mind to have him as my leader in future adventures.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Since it was my first hiking adventure, I had no comparison at all except feeling good that I could still manage the six plus hours of walking on gravels, rocks and some not well defined trails. But I must say that one has to assess his/her physical strength to embark on this adventure especially on some rather rocky terrains and proper gears are a must like hiking boots and protective wears from tree branches, some rather spiky along the way. Hat and sunscreen are also a must.

Amazing - Just Do It!

Loved this holiday 🙂 Peru is an amazing country with so much to see all around you, making the long journeys enjoyable. Thrilled to do the trek and be proud of the achievement but also wonderful trips to Lake Titicaca and seeing the culture of the people.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of Dead Woman's Pass which was not as bad as I thought it would be and certainly within most reasonably fit people's capabilities. Then obviously the first sighting of the Machu Picchu site from the Sun Gate made it all worthwhile :) Got to mention the camp staff /porters who were certainly inspirational and amazing - carrying everything at great speed from camp to camp and providing wonderful meals.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ollie kept our diverse small group of seven together (which wasn't an easy task for him!) and provided plenty of encouragement on the trek. Gave us plenty of information on sites and places we visited and was always available to provide help and advice.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The weather in Peru is changeable with plenty of rain. On the trek we all wore the ponchos at we bought in Cusco for a couple of dollars so I could have left my proper kagoule at home. I was dreading the trek camping but loved it - went for smile supplement which was a wise move - found it comfortable and fun! Take poles and knee support with you - no matter how fit you are they really help especially on the slippery wet descents. The Exodus green trek bag did not get used by anyone (should have left it at home!) the night before we were offered lightweight bags of similar size for our 7kg porters bag which we all took instead. Rented sleeping bag was clean and warm. Take the altitude seriously and take all precautions possible to maximise the enjoyment of the holiday. Beware sunburn! Do the Nazca flight - amazing and worth the money - however VERY hot inside confined space with seven people in small plane. Day trip on Lake Titicaca was brilliant- take sunscreen, hat, music and a book as long journey (2 hours) across lake. Sit on the roof and enjoy the view :) Take plenty of US dollars and get Sol when you arrive.

A fantastic time on the Inca trail!

Fantastic 4 days trekking to Machu Picchu. Our guide Wilbert Ramos was truly exceptional – managing our timing so we missed the crowds, fluting us up the mountain and continually impressing us with his encyclopaedic knowledge. Thank you Wilbert!

Most Inspirational Moment

Cloud city campsite. Spectacular sunrise there.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was a superstar.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Ask for Wilbert! (And bring walking poles!)
