Immerse yourself in Sicily!

Sicily is a fascinating treasure trove of history and beauty. This trip allows you to experience the Sicilian way of life using food as a lure to explore its villages, towns and landscape as you move from one side of the island to the other.

Most Inspirational Moment

The mixture of architecture which display Sicily's history through its Roman, Byzantine, Arab (etc, etc) periods, but now sit harmoniously together - is truly inspiring. Also, the endless mosaics at Piazza Armerina which taught me (both visually & by the enthusiastic local guide!), more about Roman way of life and their amazing feats, than any book or tv documentary ever did! I'm not usually enamoured by "old ruins", but the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento is a sight to behold! Mount Etna - I hadn't expected it's lush rich vegetation and then the contrast of the stark black ash landscape on areas affected by historic lava flow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Vincenzo was extremely knowledgeable and his passion for his home land was infectious. He hit the balance just right in telling us about wherever we were visiting that day, without feeling that you were ever getting "information overload". Always cheerful and polite ... the whole week's itinerary was run efficiently and (it would appear) effortlessly. Given we were changing hotels most nights (which had so far put me off doing this trip), we seemed to blend magically from one resort to the next in a very relaxed manner - ready for the next day's adventure! Also a "shout out" to Salvatore who drove our bus for the week - kind and courteous - who even stopped the bus en route in order to pick some fruits from the trees for our enjoyment!

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip not only gives you a Food Adventure, it also gives you a taster of Sicily's many beautiful villages/towns. Though our visit was transient, there's a whole list of places I'd like to revisit .... Noto, Ortigia, Trapani ... where do I stop? There's art and courtyards hidden throughout the land - you need to keep a keen eye out, or you'll miss something!

Fantastic scenery, great food and central base mean a relaxing trip with plenty of exercise

All of my previous Exodus trips have involved moving around every 1 or 2 days so this was a real treat to be able to unpack, relax and settle in. Coming back at night felt like coming home – the staff were so welcoming and there was plenty of food around…. we certainly needed it as the walking was strenuous but not overly challenging.

The biggest thing to be aware of is the mixed ability of the group which means we needed to be considerate of different speeds and abilities but this meant we got plenty of time to look around, enjoy the scenery and talk to each other.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing Vesuvius and walking along the crater was an absolute highlight for us and brought a sense of adventure to an otherwise relaxed walking trip/

Thoughts on Group Leader

We loved our guide Satva. She's local and therefore deeply passionate about the history and food. Most of the guides we met were local and that added a huge amount to the experience. Loads of fun too!

Advice for Potential Travellers

It's worth doing the side trips whenever possible, even if your legs are a little achy. We chose to go to the ruins of Herculanum rather than Capri but it could even be possible to squeeze in both if you can fit the visit to Herculanum on your last day before your flight.

The bear necessities

Overall I was left with the feeling that Sri Lanka is a vastly over-rated destination. To be fair to Exodus, most of the things I was underwhelmed by were nothing to do with the tour itself. We were taken to sites which are recommended in the top things to do on tripadvisor and in all the guide books/travel mags so I can’t argue with that but I just felt a bit ‘meh’ about a lot of the places/sights. The food was also a massive letdown for me. I imagined a sort of cross between Indian food (which I love) and creamy, coconut based Thai curries (which I love) but it wasn’t. If I never eat rice and curry again it’ll be too soon! Being asked for money constantly and harassed round markets etc gets old VERY quickly.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hands down the thing I enjoyed most was visiting Yala. The whole group did a game drive in the afternoon and we were lucky enough to see 2 adolescent leopards. I spotted the first one under a bush having a snooze and was so pleased the group got to see her, for a lot of the group this was their first ever big cat sighting. This was a real treat and very exciting. We had a free morning the next day and I was so fed up by this point with the activities in general that I was going to ask if I could do another drive. Roshan the guide must have read my mind and kindly offered to arrange this for anyone who was interested. 6 of us got up at 5am and never has 'you snooze, you lose' been more fitting. We entered the park at 0600 and saw our first leopard at 0624. The second followed not long after. We then had a glorious 15 minutes with a snuffling, shuffling shaggy sloth bear who was right next to our vehicle and an absolute delight to see. Just when we needed scraped off the ceiling and were on our way to the park gates, we turned a corner to find a lovely, lithe female leopard lounging in the middle of the road. We were the only vehicle there, the driver didn't phone his friends (and got a big tip as a result) and our spotty beauty gave us quite a show for 15 minutes or so. Brilliant. This was all obviously just dumb luck but wow! Climbing Sigirya was fun. The bike ride was also fun as were the local games. I was glad that the family who made our lunch on the bike ride and the banana farmer who hosted the games got to benefit from our visit. Lunch at the tsunami house was a really heartwarming experience and well done to Roshan and Exodus on looking after these people so well in their hour of need. The food here was better than all the boring buffets we had for lunch. Surely there are some more local families on the route we took that could do with a leg up? I'd much rather give a donation in return for some decent food than be overcharged for bland buffets?

Thoughts on Group Leader

Roshan was great. Nice guy, excellent sense of humour. I asked what kind of wasps the scary ones at Sigirya were and was told they were noisy woman eating wasps. Everything ran like clockwork and he really did take care of us very well. Myself and my husband have extended an offer to host him next year as we'd love to return the hospitality.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The Spice Garden is interesting but don't buy anything, you can get it all in the market in Kandy for much less and the amazing, natural hair removing cream is apparently disguised Veet according to the internet! The gem 'museum' wasn't for me. Some of the things were pretty but pressure selling ain't my bag. Same with the wood carving place. If people are wanting to do this sort of thing they could do it in their own time. You can get drinkable coffee in Natural Coffee in Kandy, Cafe Walk in Kandy (also does epic chocolate cake), Barista Lavazza in Ella and Heritage Cafe in Galle. Otherwise stick to tea. The beach town was a total dump with open sewers and nowt to do. Get a tuk tuk to Galle for the day or Unawatuna where it is much nicer to hang out. Take English pounds sterling and change at the airport. Don't let people take the piss out of you with prices for tuk tuks etc. Agree in advance and walk away if it's too much. Same with the markets etc. Nice shops were few and far between but Odel Luv SL in Kandy at the Queen's Hotel (another branch in Galle), Barefoot in Galle and generally pretty much all of the shops in Galle were really good. Calorie Counter in Galle was lovely for lunch despite the slightly off putting name! Lovely juices. When staying at the massive disappointment that is the Hill Club in Nuwara Eliya, don't bother with dinner there. I was really looking forward to dressing up and pretending to be posh but the meal was the worst of the trip. Go out of the hotel, turn right and in 5 minutes you'll be at the Grand Hotel which has an Indian restaurant which delivered the best meal of the trip. Get the murgh mahkini. The Thai restaurant and coffee shop in the same hotel are also lovely, all have entrances on the road, no need to go into the hotel.

Reply from Exodus

We would like to thank Ruth for her review, although we are sorry to hear that she did not enjoy Sri Lanka as a destination and sincerely regret that some aspects of this tour fell below her expectations. The accommodation on the first night and the last night for this trip will be changed for 2018 departures based on the feedback that we have received and while the Hill Club is a hotel that splits opinion, our groups tend to love its character and quirkiness.

Animal welfare is an important part of the Exodus Responsible Tourism policy; we are reassessing the visit to the turtle hatchery and we are monitoring the feedback we receive about the game drives to ensure our animal welfare objectives are met. We are discussing both inclusions further with our local partner and will take necessary steps to ensure these remain responsible options for inclusion.

Fantastic Grade 5 version

We were surprised and really pleased to discover this trip also came in a grade 5 version (once per month?). Everything about this trip was great – the walking terrain, the views, the lovely group, the fantastic leader (who happens to be quite the blister-blasting nurse too), Pierre-Luigi, who was great when I got a little nervous (unnecessarily but it seemed justified at the time!) and of course, Elvis the dog. And the farmhouse was so much lovelier than I anticipated, having an evening dip in the pool after a long day of hiking was heaven to me. Everyone in the group except me was a fussy eater in one way or another (if you are reading this, I mean it in the nicest possible way!), but it did not faze Braccicorti, all the food was lovely, and the wine they make was rather nice too…

Most Inspirational Moment

The views were definitely inspirational

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sara was excellent, probably the best I've met - she knows loads about the area, and Braccicorti and really cares about them too; she always looked out for all of us; kept us informed; was fun and interesting.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Use the pool! And do whatever Sara tells you!

Walking in Tuscany

I highly recommend this walking holiday staying at the agrotouristic family-run home of Braccicorti in the beautiful Garfagnana valley. Each of the five walks are unique and the scenery magnificent though the view from Pania di Corfino was a little obscured due to the weather. However, this was more than compensated for by the stunning views from the walks in the Apuane National Park to Monte Sumbra, along part of the Appenine ridge to Monte Prado and the walk to Campocatino and San Viviano’s Hermitage. The walk in the valley led by a local guide, Pierre Luigi, was great too as Pierre informed us of the history and farming of the area. But what made this trip truly fantastic and extraordinary was the sensitive and thoughtful leadership of our guide, Sara, accompanied by Elvis her dog. Sara is extremely knowledgable, informative, experienced, inspirational and has a way of communicating that is enthralling and humourous. She worked tirelessly to ensure all in the group were well catered for and throughly enjoyed their experience. Thanks to Sara I had a truly wonderful time with plenty of laughs and new friendships made. Thank you Sara and Elvis! and all the family at Braccicorti.

Most Inspirational Moment

Apart from meeting and spending time with Sara and Elvis and the group members, I absolutely loved the walk in the Appenino Tosco-Emiliano National Park along the Crinali ridge to Monte Prado. The flowers, the scents, the views, the wildlife - all were sensational and all enjoyed in great company.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Amazing! Sara is a real asset to Exodus Travels and if I had any say in it I would definitely vote her 'Guide of the Year'.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My advice to potential travellers is to book now!

Excellent Trek to one of the 7 wonders of the modern world!

Truly an excellent 2 week holiday! 7 days spent in the Peruvian Andes- 4 days trekking around Salcantay, 3 on the Inca trail, ending at the Sun Gate and that picture postcard view of Machu Picchu. If you have entertained the idea of doing this holiday, or a shorter version of the trek, I’d just book it! You will certainly not be disappointed.

Most Inspirational Moment

Difficult to choose just one but I would have to go with reaching the Sun Gate and getting the first view of Machu Picchu. It really is an eye opener and you definitely feel you have earned it after 7 days of quite challenging trekking through the Andes. As well as MP, the scenery in general, is truly magnificent. There are plenty of times when you'll want to stop and simply take in and admire your surroundings. If you are lucky and get clear skies during the evening, you should see the Milky Way.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bruce was excellent! Very professional, caring and made sure he understood the capabilities of the group. He has a passion to share his knowledge about his country and it's history and gave very detailed, interesting explanations when we stopped at archeological sites. He made every member of the group feel welcome and brought us all together as a 'family' for the two weeks we were together. A special mention needs to go to Cesar, our second guide. Knowledgeable and very likeable- along with Bruce he made sure all of our needs were catered for and that we all finished the trek in one piece. One final mention goes to the support team- cooks, wranglers and porters. These guys are like machines! While you're struggling up and down the trail, this team carries up to 25kg of equipment per person and make sure camp and lunch spots are set up well before you arrive. Truly awesome.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Train for this trek and be prepared for the change in altitude, it really does make a difference and you'll notice it when you reach the hotel in Cusco. As other reviewers have stated, pack for all seasons. At the highest camp (4,200m), you will be very cold and temperatures will fall below zero. The next day, you'll be in a valley and in temperatures above 20C. We were fortunate not to get any rainfall but it is still a possibility. Take a mixture of Peruvian Sols and US dollars, for use in Cusco.

Porto to Lisbon Ride (Premium)

A fantastic week riding through beautiful coastal scenery, with fantastic accommodation and excellent food.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many highlights on this trip! I loved the Port tasting on the first day - it was a fantastic opportunity for the group and the leader to get to know one another and taste some delicious wine! The cycling was glorious, the first 4 days were easy and then the final day was a little more difficult (but this just meant that eventually cycling in to the walled town of Obidos was all the better!!) I love the bespoke cycling paths that are used on the first few days of this trip - it's great to see a country that puts so much emphasis on safe and enjoyable cycling. The accommodation was also a real highlight - each night's stay was individual and quirky - it felt like it was properly hand picked to reflect the area. The food was brilliant - there is so much of it! There was an abundance of fish/seafood and meat - really delicious. I found myself eating far more than I was burning in calories but I got the opportunity to try a different Portuguese dessert each evening - bliss! I also really enjoyed the Fado dinner on the final night - it was a perfect end to the trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marco was excellent. He was obviously passionate about cycling and Portugal, and this really shone through every time he spoke to the group. I felt there was not a subject he did not know something about! The whole trip ran very smoothly, supported by the driver and Mechanic Joao.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Lots of sun cream! The final day of cycling is more difficult than the rest so don't be lulled into a false sense of security when you are riding on the flat for 4 days! Just before Obidos the scenery becomes more undulating which is really nice to have a change, but means that the cycling day is longer. However, the van is really helpful for those that need it and there was plenty of time for regrouping (and a long lunch!) on that day. It's useful to read up a little on Lisbon before the final day as it is a free day, so nothing in particular was planned. It's a great walking city and there is a good network of public transport so it's easy to get around. If you have time, add an extra day in Porto - it's well worth it!!

A Real Adventure in A Big Island

A rather hectic journey taking you from Antananarivo, the capital city, to the East and then to the West seeing a large chunk of this big island state. It involves two internal flights and bumpy Jeep rides and two ferry crossings in open vehicle ferries in the scorching-ly hot Sun. All part of the adventure! Just put on your sunscreen and don’t complain! Most of the time it was a comfortable mini-bus driven by Dan, a very good driver Nature lovers won’t be disappointed as there are Lemurs and Chameleons everywhere. The trees (Baobabs) and Eurphorbias are equally interesting but beware that this is a poor country.

Most Inspirational Moment

Two: Seeing Baobab Alley on two occasions, once at sunset and the moment a friendly Lemur gently jumped on my shoulder and stayed put! In spite of the mad rush by our group to get good good pics of the Lemurs at the start, towards the end we found a glut of Lemurs.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sol Razafimahazo, a charming guy, was a tolerant and knowledgeable leader. He had everything in hand from the moment he got us to change money at the airport on arrival, handed us pocket maps and after the interesting tour, made sure that we got checked in for the homeward journey. He was in contact with hotels and restaurants on the long journeys and would pre-order food for us to cut down on the waiting times. One of the best that I have met in over 15 years of traveling with Exodus!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The roads are largely unpaved and washed away. The 4 wheel vehicles are therefore essential. Be prepared for dusty, bumpy rides. The drivers are very safe but do put on seat belts. Take anti-Malaria tablets. The hotels we stayed in provided good mosquito nets and repellents but you can get bitten outdoors. One trek involves rock climbing (Exodus trip notes specifically warn you about this!) and, at my age, I opted out of it. Sensible shoes are a must. There is no point bringing fancy evening clothes. There is no National Electric Grid as such and in most parts the hotels have their own generators which, understandably, only work when needed. Electronic devices are a pain as some of the group found out. Signals are weak and the power not reliable. Internal flights weigh your baggage assiduously! Be warned! Airlines confiscate a lot of items including locally produced souvenirs. Do check with your tour leader before buying. Cuisine is either local or French or Italian. Do not expect a full English Breakfast although in all the hotels, we did get eggs cooked the way we wanted.

Great walk in Puglia and Matera

We were a group of 7 ladies from Iceland and went on the hiking trip to Puglia and Matera from june 3 to june 10. It was an excellent trip with beautiful landscape and the fantastic towns of Matera, Alberobello and Locorotondo. Excellent guide Giuseppe told us all there is about the region and was really nice.

Most Inspirational Moment

Coming to Matera and visiting the Sassi was something we will never forget. Alberobello and Trulli was fantastic and seeing the caves and hearing the history of the region was great.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Giuseppe was really great and we give him our best recommendation!

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is no need for trekking boots better to have light shoes like good sport shoes.

Cycle the Baltics

It was a fantastic trip, every day was a new adventure. The cycling was varied, and there was a lot of custom made cycle paths, e.g. on the Coronian Spit which consisted of just miles of cycle paths. The hotels were great,
the best being the one in the National Park called Palmse Manor, with a stunning lake. The Hotel Braavo in Tallin was probably one not to return to, as they were obviously doing some refurbishments and it was a bit like a “work in progress”.

Most Inspirational Moment

Finding out we'd cycled 403 kilometres over 9 days! It was tough sometimes, but it was a challenge and I was glad I did it. Another inspirational moment was going into a Russian Orthodox church in Vilnius and there was some chanting going on, and it really was very unique and special. The food we had during the whole trip was excellent, I couldn't fault it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Minda was a really nice guy and was very encouraging. I was always at the end of the line (out of a group of 16) and sometimes I'd see them disappear into the distance on rides but he would wait for me. I feel that maybe a back-marker might have been useful. When we talked to us in the bus, I was at the back and couldn't hear him that well, a microphone might have been useful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't take too much luggage and because you're moving on, you never get to unpack your case!
