People
How this trip helps improve life for local communities.
Local guides keep you well informed about local traditions and cultural-social sensitivities.
This trip brings income and opportunity to the destination community through the inclusion of locally owned hotels, restaurants, and other enterprises, and by championing locally produced food wherever possible. All hotels used are family owned by Islanders. We visit remote villages and have lunches at locally owned Tavernas.
How this trip helps protect and conserve local landscapes and nature.
By travelling in a small group we ‘tread lightly’ to minimise our impact on local resources and the environment.
We work with our partners on the ground to proactively reduce waste; this includes eliminating all single-use plastic water bottles by providing refills for re-usable bottles.
A high importance is placed on the separation and recycling of rubbish and waste on the Islands.
We rewild 100 square metres per passenger to compensate for all trip and flight emissions.
Read about our commitment to nature protection and restoration here, including our rewilding commitment for every customer who travels with us.
Planet
How we seek to keep the carbon footprint of this trip low.
Accommodation and restaurants in the itinerary use locally sourced food which has not been transported long distances.
All of the hotels we use have solar panels installed to provide hot water.
Public transport is used widely while on the Islands to and from the start and end of our walks.
Walking trips like this have very little detrimental impact on the environment and the locals, as it is a quiet, low impact activity requiring comparatively few resources to support.

Tips for sustainable travel on this trip
Leave no trace: we do all we can to ensure we leave no rubbish in the wild and beautiful places we visit; we ask that you do the same. If there are no recycling facilities in-country, consider bringing recyclable materials home with you.
Plastic waste reduction: please bring a re-usable water bottle on this trip, also consider avoiding single-use hotel toiletries, which generate a large amount of plastic waste.
Exodus Leader: Thanos Knows..
Meet our boisterous Greek guide, Thanos Mamas, who’s taken travellers to the heart of the Aegean islands for over 20 years.
The group flight usually arrives into Athens in the early evening and will be met and transferred to the start hotel in Rafina. Land Only clients should aim to arrive at the hotel this afternoon. In the evening our guide will hold a short meeting to discuss the plan for the following day, to give advice on the local area and to answer any questions.
Accommodation: Avra Hotel or similar Standard Hotel
Day 1
Start Athens; to Rafina and overnight
We gather at our hotel in the port town of Rafina. When the time’s right, we’ll also have our first meeting as a group – a good chance to get to know your leader and fellow group members. Rest well tonight; tomorrow we wake early to catch a ferry.
Accommodation: Avra Hotel (or similar)
Day 2
Morning ferry to Naxos; afternoon explore the town and visit the Temple of Apollo
In the early morning, we catch the ferry to Naxos. The ferry will leave the port at 7.25am and takes about 5hr 30min. There’s a selection of restaurants and cafes on board, serving food and drinks throughout the journey. After checking in at our hotel, we take a walk to explore the main town, Hora, a Venetian Castello town. The market area is a delight to wander through, with its craft shops, chapels and quaint restaurants. On the islet of Palatia stands the impressive Portara, an ancient marble gateway and the entrance to the remains of the Temple of Apollo.
Ascent: 164ft (50m); descent: 164ft (50m); time: two hours
Accommodation: Hotel Aeolis (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Day 3
Walk through the Tragea Valley from Halki to Melanes, visiting the ancient statue of Kouros
Today we trek the lush valley of Tragea, best known for its ancient olive and citrus groves. It is a great opportunity to discover the most authentic part of Naxos, where picturesque villages and churches punctuate our walk. We will wander along the ancient path in the middle of the Naxian marble quarries until we reach Kouros, a gigantic statue from the fifth century BCE, which was damaged during transportation and then abandoned ever since, lying under trees in the Melanes Valley.
Ascent: 656ft (200m); descent: 656ft (200m); time: five hours
Accommodation: Hotel Aeolis (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Day 4
Afternoon ferry to Santorini; then explore Fira
Today there is a free morning to explore Naxos. In the early afternoon, we take the ferry to Santorini (approximately 2hr 30min). Santorini ( known locally as Thira) is one of the most famous islands in the world. Known mainly for its beautiful beaches, it is a remnant of a volcanic cone whose top was blown off. A huge eruption (estimated 1650 BCE) gave it its crescent shape and many speculate that it was the location of the legendary lost Atlantis. This beautiful island has a lot to offer to walkers, including magnificent views of the Mediterranean. In the late afternoon, we walk around the town of Fira to enjoy the stunning views of the caldera.
Ascent: 328ft (100m); descent: 328ft (100m); time: two hours
Accommodation: Hotel Golden Star (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Day 5
Walk along the caldera from Fira to Oia
The 6mi (10km) Cliff Trail is a spectacular walk 1,310ft (400m) high above the volcanic caldera, a photographer's delight and not too challenging. Views of the Aegean are virtually ever present as we wind gently up and down to the pretty village of Oia, home to artists, galleries, boutiques and cafes. There’s time to explore, relax and soak up the culture before we transfer back to Fira.
Ascent: 984ft (300m); descent: 984ft (300m); time: five hours
Accommodation: Hotel Golden Star (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Day 6
Free time in Santorini; afternoon ferry to Paros
This morning we have free time in Santorini. Optional extras include a visit by bus to the buried city of Acrotiri, time at the black beaches of Kamari and/or a visit to the prehistoric museum of Thero in town. Leaving Santorini in the afternoon, we board the ferry to Paros, the journey is approximately three hours.
Accommodation: Hotel Pandrossos (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Day 7
Walk the ancient paths in the heart of Paros, from Lefkes to Prodromos and the coastal villages of Marpissa and Pisso Livadhi
In the morning, we visit the fourth-century cathedral of Paros, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture and a relic of early Christianity. We take a bus to reach the heart of the island and the village of Lefkes, where we join an Old Byzantine path that runs all the way to the east coast of Paros. The route is believed to be about 1,000 years old and used to traverse the entire island. Today’s route will pass through beautiful Cycladic villages and mediaeval villages. In the afternoon, we take a bus back to Parikia.
Ascent: 492ft (150m); descent: 492ft (150m); time: four hours
Accommodation: Hotel Pandrossos (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast
Ferry transfer to Piraeus; end Athens
Enjoy your final breakfast of the holiday this morning, before hopping on a ferry back to Piraeus or Rafina (approximately five hours). Back on the mainland, you’ll begin your return journey home.
Please note: the ferry port can change depending on the season.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Day 8
Ferry transfer to Piraeus; end Athens
We take the ferry back to Piraeus or Rafina (approx.5hrs) and transfer to Athens airport where the trip ends. Those on the group flights will be transferred to the airport for the return flight to London.
Please note: the ferry port can change depending on the season and you might return to Rafina.
Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Greece. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.
Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.
All breakfasts included. Simple buffet-style Greek breakfast consists of bread/toast, butter, jam, fresh juice, milk, local yoghurt, eggs and honey, and coffee/tea. For lunch and dinner, we normally go to different local tavernas and restaurants (at times, picnics of locally sourced food will be suggested for lunch instead), where we can sample some typical Greek meze dishes, olives, fresh fish, vegetables and much more.
Weather
The Cyclades enjoy typical Mediterranean weather with mild winters and hot dry summers. March and November: cooler daytime temperatures of 10C-15C (50F-59F) and nights of 5C-8C (41F-46F), a chance of some rain. April, May and October: pleasant daytime temperatures 12C-22C (53F-71F) nights of 5C-13C (41F-55F), a chance of some rain. June and September: daytime temperatures 20C-35C (68F-95F), nights of 15C-20C (59F-68F); very dry. In July and August, the temperature can get hot (normally around 35C/95F) but there is always a sea breeze.

Grade: Activity Level 1 (Leisurely)
This trip offers the chance to discover three wonderful islands with gentle walks. Routes have been chosen to showcase the best of the natural and historic sites on each island. Terrain will include footpaths and mountain terrain, which can be rocky and loose in places with some sloped ascents and descents (walking poles can be useful).
There are three day walks in our itinerary and two half days. Walking time is between two and five hours including lunch breaks, and an average level of fitness is required. All walks are optional.
Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility. However if you are a regular traveller on such trips, please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition.
Hotels
Seven nights in three-star hotels with en suite rooms. On the islands, we use family-run hotels, ensuring our visit benefits the local communities. The rooms are comfortable, clean and tidy, and have private facilities, however the bathrooms can sometimes be a little small and old fashioned. All of the hotels have a swimming pool (open May to October). We also have one night in a standard hotel in Rafina.
I really enjoyed the walks and the scenery they provided. Walking around the villages was also fun. Our guide Cecile was great. She explained a lot about Greek culture, plants, cuisine and history. The hotels we stayed at were were just ok for the most part. Nothing memorable but everything appeared to work. On most days I was really disappointed with the breakfasts that were included in the tour. They were sad, cold, boxed meals that didn’t contain much food I would eat. With the exception of the hotel on Naxos, I ended up having to buy something to eat later. The restaurant dinners organized by Cecile were very nice however and I certainly did not end up starving. Perhaps the aspect of the tour that I wish I had appreciated first was just how much time was spent getting to, riding on, and making our way to hotels from the ferries. I just don’t feel the pleasure of the walks and sightseeing visits were offset by the down time spent in transit. I would definitely recommend visiting the Greek Islands, but before recommending this trip I would make sure the person was comfortable with all of the time devoted to logistics.
Most Inspirational Moment
The walk on Santorini was my favorite.
Thoughts on Group Leader
She was professional and provided a lot of informational content to the tour. She was also clear about where and when to meet to catch buses and ferries.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Read the itinerary carefully before deciding if you will enjoy a tour the visits 3 islands in such a short time. The ferry rides might be relaxing for some people, but I found them boring.

Bad value for money
This was my first trip with Exodus. The Greek Islands were beautiful but this trip is extremely bad value for money. The hotels, with the exception of the one on Santorini, were barely adequate – they were certainly not 3 star. In the last hotel I actually got bed bug bites. I really enjoyed the company of the group on the holiday but I’m appalled by the standard of accommodation on offer. Our guide was just ok

A good trip.
The trip to the Cycladic islands of Naxos, Paros & Santorini was lovely! We had a great group and our guide was the Lovely Cecile. Although it was very, very cold and windy, the plus point was that the islands were very quiet from the overload of usual tourists. The walks were beautiful and the views were stunning. I’d much rather walk in Santorini during the quiet season than what I have seen (in pictures) during peak season. Eating out every evening with the group was fun. My only complaint was the accommodation in Paros. Frankly, it was shocking! I think I didn’t expect this from Exodus. The room was freezing as the heating wouldn’t work and the shower was leaky and broken. I think Exodus needs to rethink the accommodation in Paros. If you fancy the islands all to yourself, even though it may be freezing, then give this holiday a try in March.
Most Inspirational Moment
The walk in Santorini.
The wild flowers gallore in our walks in Naxos & Paros.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Cecile was lovely and very helpful. She even got me a book of wild flowers of Greece to refer to because I loved wild flowers.
She was also a good laugh and we loved listening from her about her pet donkey!
Advice for Potential Travellers
Check with Exodus about the accommodation in Paros.
Suggestions
Not particularly.

Disappointing
I really looked forward to this trip but unfortunately the trip was spoilt by poor planning and one really horrible hotel. We travelled in March and unfortunately the weather was very cold when we arrived. No effort had been made to prepare the first hotel on Naxos and it was bitterly cold, many of the aircon units didn’t heat up and we had to sit in coats to eat breakfast. If you’re walking, you need somewhere warm and comfortable to relax afterwards. It’s a shame as it’s a nice hotel
Being March, a lot on the islands was closed as the season doesn’t start until Easter and it would have been good to know that from the trip notes as tavernas on the walking routes weren’t open and toilets not available. In some instances it was difficult to find somewhere to eat at night. Full of praise for our Guide, Cecile who did her best to resolve problems with great kindness and humour. She’s a gem
The islands are very lovely at this time of year, full of spring flowers and without the crowds. The walks are lovely and very varied, taking in little villages and mountain scenery. The terrain can be rocky but the pace allows for that, so this would be a wonderful holiday if Exodus didn’t insist on using cheap, poor quality hotels. The Hotel Pandrossos on Paros sadly left a particularly sour note. The beds and pillows were filthy and the sheets full of cigarette burns. Heating didn’t work, no hot water, everything was broken and the whole place could do with a good clean. I don’t know what’s happened to Exodus as I’ve always rated them highly, but my experience post-Covid is of obnoxious staff and couldn’t care less responses. Very sad
Most Inspirational Moment
I loved the walks, particularly on Naxos, walking the ancient tracks between villages. The scenery was stunning
Thoughts on Group Leader
Cecile was lovely, very funny, very knowledgeable and managed the shortcomings of this trip really well. She knows the islands inside out and is well received wherever we went. On one walk, the owner of a closed taverna opened up to offer us a coffee and toilet because of her friendship with Cecile.
Advice for Potential Travellers
I’d avoid this trip until Exodus sort out the hotels. Exodus trips aren’t cheap and no one needs their holiday spoilt by cheap, filthy hotels

Perfect introduction to Greek islands
I had never been to Greece before and decided that this trip might be a good place to start. I wasn’t disappointed. It was well organised with walks of just the right distance and variety for me and in good company. All hotels were comfortable although plumbing a little variable! Thanos was an excellent guide and insured that we got the most out of the trip. Nothing was too much trouble. He was particularly good at organising mealtimes; choosing excellent restaurants and swiftly calculating everybody’s individual bill at the end. I thought all three islands were beautiful but particularly Paros . Santorini is definitely worth a trip for sensational views and a great walk but not somewhere I would return as just too busy in the main centres -a forest of selfie sticks! My only regret is not spending a few days in Athens at the beginning or end but all round a superb trip. Thank you Exodus. I’ve already booked the next one!
Most Inspirational Moment
Too hard to pick just one; exploring the labyrinth of little streets on Naxos and Paros breathtaking sunset on Santorini and hiking along the caldera there. We are very lucky with the weather which made the ferry trips enjoyable as well , beautiful views

Thanos Was an excellent guide nothing was too much trouble. He was extremely knowledgeable about all three islands pointing out interesting historical and geographical features along the way.

Fantastic Week
A really enjoyable, relaxing trip. Accommodation was excellent in all places, our guide Cecile was fantastic, Greek food is wonderful, and the walks were brilliant. Everything was well organized. I hadn’t been to the Greek Islands before, and this tour was the perfect introduction to this beautiful corner of the world. Santorini was overflowing with tourists (there were three cruise ships there when we arrived, and the chaos at the ferry terminal–which is not where the cruise ships go–was truly something to experience) but everyone should visit this stunning and unique island once in their lifetime. The walk on Santorini was incredibly beautiful (although hot–very little shade). Naxos and Paros were more laid back, also stunningly beautiful, and exactly what I dreamed the Greek islands might be like–I took SO many photos! You have some time to explore on your own. The walks are not difficult, and the pace matches the group–steady but no rush. You need sturdy walking shoes for sure, but not boots. If you often walk with a pole, bring it as paths are rocky and uneven in many places. You do spend a fair few hours on ferries but that’s part of getting around between islands, so bring a book and enjoy the experience. I’m sure all groups are different, but ours was a really nice mix of people from the UK, NZ, Australia, and the US, with a median age in the 50-65 range. If you’re even thinking about this trip, don’t hesitate–just book it.
Most Inspirational Moment
Loved it all. I wish we'd had more time on Paros, the least-touristy of the three islands. All the walks were great.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Cecile was fabulous: Well organized, knowledgeable, and unflappable--and always there just for a chat if you're looking for company. 10/10.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Bring cash for meals and incidentals. Credits cards are accepted in many places, but when you are sharing meals in a group, it's inconvenient for everyone if you want to put your meal on a card.
Suggestions
Just book it. Great trip. I will travel with Exodus again.

Walking on the Greek islands
I really enjoyed the holiday. Our guide Cecile was excellent and really made for a lovely trip in terms of looking after us and recommending and arranging meals at local restaurants. The accommodation was very good. My only disappointment was that most of the journeys were on Catamarans rather than ferries. Not what I expected from the brochure which said the journeys between Athens and the islands would be on ferries. I did not now catamarans would be regarded as ferries. I made my own arrangements from Rafina to Naxos when I found out the journey was not on a ferry. I really would have preferred to have traveled from Paros to Athens on the last day by ferry instead of 5 hours inside a catamaran on which we could not move around or go outside apart from a few minutes at each port. That is my only complaint. Overall it was a great trip.
Most Inspirational Moment

Enjoyed but could be better
Didn’t get off to a good start because exodus didn’t inform us and several others of an itinerary change, although some others in the party did hear about it. Although the reverse order for the visits is better we ended up with a 1/2 day on Paros with not much to do and no useful suggestion from the tour leader. He was generally a very good guide but occasionally not as flexible as one might wish. The walks were generally good and not hard apart from the odd steep climb. Just wish there had been more of them (see above). We were recommended to go to the buried town of akrotiri, which was well worth the trip together with the museum in Thira. Can’t understand why Exodus don’t make this part of the trip if time permits. If we hadn’t gone we would have had another wasted morning on Santorini, to add to that on Paros. Hotel beds generally rock hard and in 2 out of the 4, some of the smallest shower cubicles we have ever experienced. I think we would have preferred to pay a bit more for a better hotel on Santorini & Paros Ferry journeys were always longer than anticipated but luckily weather was OK so we could go on deck apart from Naxos to Rafina on the catamaran where you have aircraft type seats
Most Inspirational Moment
walk on naxos
Thoughts on Group Leader
See above but generally good but did tend to lecture us a bit. Extremely knowledgeable and very pleasant. Could do with a bit more understanding on the needs of a diabetic in the group but soon caught on when we pointed out it wasn't a "gippy tummy" but low blood sugar. Probably helps that we are familiar with this condition due to previous job.
Some small kindnesses to the group were also appreciated and he did try hard. But having him deal with other groups that exodus has in the region while guiding us was not optimal. Exodus need sto emply more staff to cover their local needs
Advice for Potential Travellers
Make sure you have plenty to read for ferry trips, be prepared for hard beds. Good walking shoes a must but boots probably optional

Brillian introduction to Greece!
Had an amazing holiday island hopping with Thanos as our inspiring leader. The three islands were so different in character to each other (Naxos = relaxed/laidback / Santorini = busy/picture postcardish / Paros = picturesque mountain villages and pathways). Loved the holiday!
Most Inspirational Moment
The perfection of buildings, statues and even ruins which were thousands of years old and in many cases still being used or incorporated within slighly newer buildings. Our current buildings are not made to last!
Thoughts on Group Leader
Thanos is amazing. He is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about all things Greek: culture; food; botanical; history and world affair.
He delighted in sharing his country and seemed to gain in energy and enthusiasim as the week progressed.
Thanos was a firm leader who successfully herded his group on and off the ferries without anyone or luggage going astray.
Advice for Potential Travellers
We went on this holiday in April and the weather was colder than I hoped or planned. In Paros it sank to 11C and that did feel cold but overall was very good when we were on our walks. If you go at that time of year take waterproofs!
Suggestions
The shower cubicles in the hotels are tiny .... really tiny. Just be prepared.

Despite a last minute itinerary alteration due to ferry timetable changes, thus was a well-planned, wonderfully lead week mixing somewhat challenging walks with sightseeing and wonderful fellow travellers. We sampled many local dishes in lovely tavernas and village eateries and enjoyed some very amusing moments. A great week.
Most Inspirational Moment
The view from the cliff top path from Fira to Ouia on Santorini - breathtaking!
Thoughts on Group Leader
Thanos is a knowledgable, considerate and professional guide with a great sense of humour and a big personality.
Advice for Potential Travellers
This trip is categorised as 1 but there are some quite tricky descents on some walks.
The option to take the cable car down to the boat trip round the Caldera should be considered if you are not happy about a 600 step (uneven, in some places slippery) walk you share with donkeys carrying passengers up from the quayside. I know I would have preferred this, especially as I slipped and fell at one point.
You will get a refund if you have to cancel your trip due to COVID-19.
