Three vacations in one

This trip was excellent. For those wanting variety, it was three trips in one. The jungles and wildlife of Borneo, the culture and history of Melaka and George Town, and the beachs and swimming pools of Langkawi to finish it off.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing an organgutang in the wild!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Aldrin did a super job. He was efficient and friendly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Beware of the Borneo section. If basic jungle lodges and rain and mud are not your thing, this might not be the trip for you. The accomodation is sparse and the food limited and plain on the Borneo section.

One of the best cycling trips

This trip exceeded my expectations. The scenery was breathtakingly beautiful everywhere. The food was amazing, and the cycling was varied and fun.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting the home of the Mediterranean diet was inspirational. Not only was it interesting information, but Pioppi is pretty much paradise, and we had some of the most delicious food I have ever eaten for lunch with one of the best views on the entire planet. The picnic on the beach of fresh bread, mozzarella, tomatoes and strawberries was pretty special too.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paolo was an excellent leader, so well organized he made it look easy. He managed the different abilities of the group well, picked the perfect places to eat and was always full of local knowledge.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As long as you can ride 30 miles or so and go up a decent hill, the cycling is fine. Going in April is lovely as it is much quieter (although the Amalfi coast was still very busy) and there are wildflowers everywhere. However, it's a bit cold for swimming, and you need clothing for variable weather. Most days were warm and sunny though.

Vietnam Cycling

What a trip!..18 of us threw ourselves into an adventure for 2 weeks!Thank you Son ,our trip leader ,.for supporting all 18 of us through all the “undulations”.The especially selected “Happy Rooms”…- the continual patience of all the crewĺ.
Carefully paced cycling made it doable for all of us.
Such a shame about the rubbish on the side of the road.
Great food..suppose..always ģç
Highly recomend this trip.Book it now

Some training helps!

A fun week despite stormy weather!

I very much enjoyed my week in Madeira, despite having ‘Storm Emma’ lash us for days. It’s a beautiful island, with great views. We saw wild canaries, firecrests, blackcaps, lizards and lots of lovely flowers as we walked. Unfortunately the storms made some of the planned itinerary, such as the highest peak, impossible. So guide Andre had to invent more sheltered walks for us, and we managed 4 days walking instead of the planned 5, which was pretty good in the circumstances.
Andre was great, all the hotels were nice, and the group (full at 16) were all good fun. I’ll definitely go back – in the summer!

Most Inspirational Moment

The one sunny day, and out walk along the cliffs of the north coast.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andre was great: knowledgeable and funny.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't expect great weather. I think we were very unlucky, but it's known to be changeable in general.

Discover Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a beautiful island and this trip shows it at its best throughout. It is bursting with wildlife, plants and fantastic National Parks. This is a well organised and varied trip and the ecolodges and hotels were just amazing. Beautiful scenery, well tended gardens and comfortable accomodation with great food at every place. The people are friendly, well mannered and polite. The Costa Ricans are proud of their country and the land is superbly managed and protected.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many! But for me watching the sloths and varieties of monkeys was fascinating. Birdlife second to none, and of course, spotting the elusive Resplendent Quetzals.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Johnny Villalobos Munoz was absolutely inspirational. I can see why he has won tour leader of the year twice recently. He is so knowledgeable about everything, knows the names of all flowers, plants, trees, animals, insects and birds, and the stories behind them all. He can not only listen and say what the bird is but can make their sounds to attract them! Everywhere we went he showed us consideration and kindness, always checking that we were ok. He has a quiet confident manner with a lovely sense of humour. Nothing was too much trouble for him and he made the holiday the fantastic experience that it was. He taught us to listen and look and had huge empathy with both his group and his surroundings.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a good pair of binoculars! You will need a variety of clothing for the extremes of weather: hot to chilly and pouring down. A good lightweight waterproof and plenty of sun cream and mosquito repellent. I wish I had taken more lightweight long sleeved blouses as I was bitten badly by mossies. Also a good pair of walking trainers.

An Educational Adventure

The best part about this trip was our wonderful guide Bobby. He is from the region and lives and breathes all things history. His enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge made this hiking adventure feel authentic, exciting, and more than ‘just a walk’.

The group of people we hiked with were fantastic, and the porters were second to none.

I have never eaten so well at camp – although it helped that we didn’t have to cook the food.

I would do this trip again in a heartbeat, especially with Bobby as our guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

The fourth day of hiking - the views paired with the educational component of the region were spectacular.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I could not have asked for a better group leader. Bobby is an exemplary group leader who genuinely cares about his group members. He is a hiking whisperer (he knew exactly how long it would take me to finish hiking each day), and has the best stories. Meal times were always enjoyable. Whilst other companies have to shout about how 'green' they are, Bobby makes it clear that his passion for keeping the region clean and ready for future generations is important. I think Bobby should be your gold standard of tour leaders for this trip. His no nonsense communication style and his humour and knowledge made me feel safe. I trusted him and the team to lead us.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book your trip well in advance. Even in the low season, the permits to hike the trail can run out. Bring lots of layers - even though the temperature is pretty mild, the weather can change many times and very quickly in one day.

The Inca Trail & Machu Picchu

A fantastic trip with excellent organisation. This was my first trip with Exodus following some recommendations from friends. I was very pleased with how smoothly it ran and with the experienced staff. I intend to book further adventures through Exodus.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the Sun Gate and looking down on Machu Picchu was particularly inspirational, especially having just climbed a very steep set of steps!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader had over 40 years experience hiking along the Inca trail and has completed the journey hundreds of times. He was very knowledgeable and delivered information to the group in an engaging way. He was very friendly and also patient with the slower group members. He was easily the best group leader I've ever had on a holiday.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The kit bags that Exodus provides in advance are too heavy (around 1KG), it is better to take a lighter bag that doesn't use up so much of the weight allowance. When we arrived in Cusco our group leader provider some lighter kit bags for us to borrow, which was very useful, although I don't know if this is standard practice for all groups.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

Great walks, wonderful scenery, good company.
The hotel Due Torri was spotlessly clean, the hotel staff were all, without exception, friendly and helpful. Its a family run hotel and they go out of there way to make sure you are looked after. The food at the hotel was excellent.
Some of the walks were tougher than we anticipated, so we all had aching legs for the first couple of days, but it was worth it for the views.

Most Inspirational Moment

Looking out along the peninsula towards Capri for the first time after climbing to the top of tre Calli.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Severio was excellent, great local knowledge, lots of interesting stories, and good fun. His kept us all entertained, and made sure we got to see as much as possible in our time there. With the changing weather conditions during our stay, he kept track of all the alternatives should we have needed to change our plans. We were also lucky to have a trainee guide, Vania, who was also a pleasure to have around, and will I'm sure make an excellent guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure if travelling in March, early April you take plenty of layers! Try and get a little extra walking exercise in before the holiday

A marvel, get it while you can

Most first time trekkers go for Everest or Annapurna but Manaslu Circuit is a trek for the more discerning customer. It is a busy route, but not so much with tourists. It may take a little longer and is a little more challenging but the pay-off is huge. Sure, you trek around the 8th highest peak on the planet but if your interests extend beyond the magnificence of the mountains into the cultural heritage of the region then an education in remote living awaits. The route passes through many ancient Tibetan settlements where little has changed in hundreds of years. In contrast, the tea houses are nearly all recently built on this circuit so, apart from a couple of high altitude stops, they are more spacious and cleaner than those I’ve seen in the past. I wondered if a couple of the shorter days could be done in one but the longer approach provides excellent acclimatisation time which is much needed as Larke La is a significant challenge, especially in the unusually deep snow we had; it would certainly be easier in the Autumn season. This well planned trip has everything really, small monasteries to visit as well as is plenty for wild-life enthusiasts. Against all odds a road is being built to the Tibetan border which, as always, will bring many benefits but at a cost. Best to go in the next couple of years as I fear this route is changing forever.

Most Inspirational Moment

Obviously there is great joy getting over Larke La but that's almost missing the point. For me, experiencing each medieval settlement and learning more about the remote life-style is utterly humbling.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Tsheten Sherpa, never tired of looking after us, nothing was too much trouble. He had extensive local knowledge which he shared constantly. If you did this trek alone you would certainly miss a lot. I was particularly pleased to see how sensitive and caring he was to the villagers we passed en route. This man is a gem.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared to learn, travel with an open mind and heart at all times.

Interesting!

Good trip with long mileage so it would be better if there was a driver with the guide, it would release the guide to be able to talk more about interesting things a long the way. There were also a number of options which would be better to be included in the tour.

Most Inspirational Moment

Addo elephant game reserve.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Good, but lacked a little confidence also found it sometimes difficult to explain and express herself . A good knowledge of wildlife.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Review extra tour options before departure. eg Game drives, sea life boat trip, township tour.
