Fantastic, off the beaten path trekking

Brilliant trip exploring a spectacular mountain range. Wide variety of scenery and weather! Great campsites with few other westerners.

Most Inspirational Moment

Camping just below the high pass at Lake Ala-kul

Thoughts on Group Leader

Valerie was amazing. Full of stories of past treks and expeditions. Friendly and professional, she kept everything running smoothly with her great organisation skills and sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take waterproof gloves and warm ones for at camp! There are washing opportunities at most campsites (in rivers) so you can go light on clothes.

Trip of a lifetime!

This is such a well designed itinerary to see the real Japan, from their rich history and Culture to the modern side it was amazing how you travel through their history along the trip. You get to see a LOT of places along the way in a manner that feels like you have accomplished a lot but not too quickly. I think anyone going to Japan has to be prepared for a lot of travelling and moving around, especially as almost everything is on public transport. Don’t let this put you off as it is the best public transport in the world! So clean, always on time, friendly and respectful people – coming back to the UK after the trip was a real shock after we got experienced to the Japanese way.

Most Inspirational Moment

Staying in the Ryokans up in the Japanese Alps was a surreal experience. We had an 11 course dinner at a traditional homestay and it was a real pinch me moment. Everyone was keen to learn about Japanese Culture, try the food (myself included), and it was just such a wholesome experience. Managing to go 2 weeks only using Chopsticks and no cutlery was a very proud moment too :)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Keigo was incredible. His attention to detail and knowledge about everywhere made all the difference. Without him we would have been totally lost and only had a fraction of the experience.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for a lot of walking, often in tourist sites and on the transport system. The country is an attack on the senses to really try to just immerse yourself in the surroundings instead of always hunting for the perfect photo. Be prepared for all types of weather - an umbrella can come in handy.

Wonderful Salkantay and Inca Trail

The Salkantay Trek gives you both remoteness, superb mountain and glacier views along with the Inca Trail and the reward of the inspirational Machu Picchu at the end. It’s definitely worth the extra days of walking and camping. We didn’t see any other groups for the first three days! There was high level of support provided by the leader, chef and porters. The food on the trek was exceptional – nutritionally balanced, plentiful and varied. The days in Cusco before the trek provided good acclimatisation as well as familiarising ourselves with Inca history. The Machu Picchu Museum was well worth a visit in advance of the trek.

Most Inspirational Moment

Camping close to the Salkantay mountain and glacier (there was no one else there except the Exodus group) and the first glimpse of Machu Picchu as we came through the Sun Gate.

Thoughts on Group Leader

William was a fantastic leader. He was extremely knowledgeable on the history and geography of the areas we walked as well as taking us to all the key sites in Cusco. He was always on hand to provide advice, whether we had questions about the trek or were looking for cafe and restaurant ideas in Cusco. He was always looking out for our health and well-being, including monitoring our oxygen levels and checking for effects of altitude. He always had our best interests at heart.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip starts at altitude in Cusco and reaches higher levels during the trek. Do read the trip notes so you are as well prepared as you can be in basic fitness for the ascents and descents and length of walking days. It’s cold at night (especially near the glacier) so make sure you take the clothes that Exodus recommend. Exodus provide a good sleeping bag if you don’t have one.I always take snack bars in case I need extra food on the trek, although we were provided with plenty of snacks and fruit (more so than other treks I have done).

Biking P-B

Excellent trip. Great guide and driving

Most Inspirational Moment

The Vienna Opera and a return to Bratislava after 30 years

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great leader. Showcased special sites during the entire trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for limited English in smaller towns.

The country is Majesty but accommodations and trip arrangement is poor.

First I want to say that Namibia is a very underrated country and is beautiful. It has a lot to offer but I was not totally satisfied with the trip and that’s directly due to the trip value/ cost for what you get. I think the trip is too expensive for what you get in return, the accommodation are probably the worst of the bunch, I know is Africa and is a dry country but even when you in town the accommodation is bad. 95 % of the meals include comes from Lodge, meaning if you book a night at one of these Lodge it’s probably come included or a little fee, where all the money we paid for the trip goes to?. Some of the Lodge dont practice proper hygiene, around 4 people got a sick due to a stomach bug in my trip. Too much walking and hiking the last hiking only 3 people attended everyone else stayed at the Lodge, give us more game drive instead of hiking.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing Namibia was a great experience, dunes, landscape, game drive, everything was amazing.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was amazing, a lot of knowledged, funny and very professional. Hakuna matata!!

Reply from Exodus

We’re grateful for Miguel’s review, and we’re glad he enjoyed exploring Namibia, and especially that he was so impressed with his Exodus tour leader. We are sorry to read, though, that he wasn’t entirely satisfied with some elements of the trip. The accommodation on this tour is generally well received, and we can see from the feedback forms submitted by members of Miguel’s group that travellers rated the accommodation on this particular departure at an average of 4.33 out of 5. While we feel that this indicates it is of a good standard, we are sorry that Miguel did not feel the same.

We were concerned to read Miguel’s comments about the cleanliness of some of the lodges, as this is something we take very seriously. We’ve not received similar previous comments from customers on this trip, and we feel it is important to mention that our feedback forms ask each respondent whether they felt that their health and safety was fully upheld throughout the tour, which members of Miguel’s group all answered in the positive. We would not wish to discount Miguel’s views, however, and will continue to monitor the feedback we receive about the properties on this trip, from both clients and leaders.

While we include several game drives on this tour, we appreciate that Miguel would have preferred more. We feel that this trip contains a good balance of activities which allow clients to take in all that Namibia has to offer, and are confident that we give clients a rounded experience of the country, though we do keep an eye on general feedback to make sure the itinerary continues to meet our clients’ expectations.

All about the sightseeing

This trip is about the sightseeing and exploring the towns in the region, Matera and the trulli were fascinating. The walks are as described in the notes and with the exception of the Matera ravine walk pleasant but nothing special. The paths are flat and easy to navigate, not one for serious hikers. The accommodation was good , the food was typically Italian, lots of pasta, pane pomodoro (tomato bread) and mozzarella. I suspect coeliacs may find it a challenge unless they like tomato and Mozarella salad!

Most Inspirational Moment

The ravine walk in Matera

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tancredi was excellent and took great care to see everyone could cope in the heat

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take plenty of cash, restaurants will not take multiple card payments.

Excellent

Everything was perfect -food, expedition leader, guides, hotel staff. Perfect weather too. 8 polar bears and 8 blue whales too and all these rest. The trip was excellent through and through.

Most Inspirational Moment

polar bears and ble whales

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ryan was excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go and do it.

Magical Journey

We travelled on the same trip as Angela, and agree with everything that she said.
The wildlife sightings in the Masai Mara were excellent; the boat trip on the Kazinga Channel was every bit as good; the trip to the source of the Nile is fun; and then there is the big finale of the chimp and gorilla trekking, all making this a wonderful journey.
Only one site, near Lake Nakuru, had poorer facilities, although as it had baboons and colobus monkeys in the camp while we were having lunch, we could happily overlook that.
This is definitely a trip where you need to have the right mental attitude, and then just go for it. The trip notes say that you will remember the time with the gorillas for the rest of your life. That is not an exaggeration, but it could be applied to the rest of the trip as well.

Most Inspirational Moment

It has to be the time spent with the gorillas in Bwindi. You know that they could take you out with one swipe of their hand, but you never feel threatened. They are so chilled, and it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be in their presence. The balloon trip over the Masai Mara is also worth it. It is just such a fantastic experience, and gives a different perspective (literally) on the animals and their life. The champagne breakfast after landing is great too!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Clara was an excellent guide. Her insights into the local situations were fascinating, and she was happy to share her knowledge, as well as ensuring that everything ran smoothly. She was always cheerful and helped make the group into a family. She also joined in the Whatsapp group for updates and messages, and has stayed in touch after the trip. Stoney, the driver was first class. The roads are very variable in quality, and some off-road driving was also required in the game parks. We never felt unsafe, even when there were some very tight turns and narrow gaps. Ken’s food was very good. You should not expect “cordon bleu” cooking in a camping safari. You hope for tasty and filling food, and we got that in abundance. The dietary requirements of some of the group (my wife and son are the “no-peppers” that Angela referred to) did not faze him at all, and there were no complaints. Finally, James was a great help to everyone in his roving role as general helper for everything.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As mentioned, you want to have the right approach for a trip like this, and our group definitely did. Although the trip is described as “full-service”, so that the crew put up and take down the tents, in practice, everyone chipped in to help, as it was more efficient and we could get on the move earlier, or get the camp up earlier. Early starts (5:30 a.m.?) are not a problem, as you have early nights as well – you just need to set your body clock to go with the daylight. It was worth hiring the porters for the gorilla trekking. We could have managed (just) without them, but they took away a stress that you don’t want interfering with such a memorable experience. The tents are not as large as on other Exodus trips (we have previously been on the Wildlife & Wilderness of Botswana) and so if you are sharing, there isn’t really room for two people plus their cases. However, just a little forethought is needed – what will I be wearing tomorrow? – and only take that and “night-stuff” to the tent. Leave the rest of the luggage on the truck overnight. Those who were not sharing had no problems. The lockers are slightly bigger than the trip notes suggest, and can be easily accessed during journeys, and throughout the evenings, as the crew stay with the truck. I suspect that our trek to see the gorillas was not as tough as some have had (based upon others’ reviews), although you do want to be reasonably fit. Still, it was not beyond me, as the oldest of the group (at 60), so most people should be fine. Laundry service is available at Jinja (“Adrift”) and Kisoro (“Virunga”) campsites, if you need to keep the luggage down. The upgrades, if you wanted to skip camping for a night or two, were basic chalets / rooms, but always clean, with hot showers, and very reasonably priced. (We upgraded for the nights before and after the gorilla trekking so that we were ready for the trek and in case we were shattered after it.) The trip notes do not mention the hotel in Kigali. We arrived there at about 14:30, so we had plenty of time for a re-pack (sleeping bag back into case) rest, shower, and an excellent dinner, before the 23:30 transfer to the airport for the flight home.

Fantastic

What an incredible experience! An expedition rather than a holiday, with a fantastic guide who found us swimming spots in lakes and rivers as well as guiding us expertly over challenging passes, through flower streets fields and smiling over 11 days of challenging but exhilarating hiking. Our camp wonder women was wonderful and made delicious dinners, was full of fun and helped us find everything from the milk to a picture perfect buvette in Zermatt. The group was great, and you need a great group for this trip as you are together a lot and it is challenging – 15 days hiking camping and enjoying the sun and mountains.

Most Inspirational Moment

Jumping in lakes or rivers to cool off and refresh at the end of long hot days.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great, experienced, commuted, wise, upbeat.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Expect an expedition not a holiday. You have to be able to get on with things and not be needy! Be prepared for a ‘group pace’. And being together a lot.

Great Trip

I really enjoyed this trip. The hikes were a great way to explore the landscape. Tancredi our group leader was very knowledgeable about the culture and history of the places we visited and also helped us make the most of our free time. I found all the places we visited unique and interesting. The week was packed with a lot to see and do but was planned well.

Most Inspirational Moment

Matera and learning about the Sassi districts.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tancredi was a great leader and made the week what it was. He was attentive throughout and made sure everyone was ok given the high temperatures in July.

Advice for Potential Travellers

In July be prepared for the heat and early starts for the hikes.
