There’s a reason our walking holidays in Italy are so popular. To start, we offer something for all levels and interests. In just one boot-shaped land, you could test yourself against the cloud-grazing Dolomites, enjoy a comfortable ramble among the rolling vineyards of Tuscany, or gaze over the glittering sea on a clifftop walk on the Amalfi Coast.
Then, there’s the food… and the drink. Who wouldn’t want to end a day’s hike eating pasta in a trattoria only filled with local people? Or how about breaking up a gentle stroll with a wine-tasting session in a historic estate?
But the real reason our Italy hikes stand out, is the local knowledge we’ve garnered over decades of running trips here. Hike in Italy with us, and you’ll see how the local people live and take the trails most don’t even know about. It’s the way we love to explore Italy, and we want to share it with you..
1. The dramatic peaks of the Dolomites Step into a high-altitude wonderland on walking holidays in Italy crafted with four decades of Alpine know-how. Our Dolomites walking and hiking trips take you beneath the spires of Tre Cime di Lavaredo, across wildflower meadows once patrolled during World War I, and into stories only our expert local guides could share. Each day brings expertly planned trails tailored to your group. The only drama? The scenery. In the evening, return to the 400-year-old Hotel Adler in Villabassa – it will charm your socks off.
2. Amalfi’s clifftop wonders Walk in the footsteps of gods – quite literally – along the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods), where never-ending views of the Mediterranean stretch into the horizon. Our Amalfi tours are curated by those who live it, blending lemon groves, cliffside villages and staircases to Positano with guides who know just where to pause for granita and hidden viewpoints. From carefully selected trails to local insight, these walks balance challenge and culture. And after a day on the trails? Expect seafood, sunsets and stories shared over limoncello.
3. Hidden trails & truffle forests of Tuscany Got a nose for adventure? Our Tuscany walking holidays explore the lesser-known Garfagnana region – a mountainous escape where medieval towns perch above valleys of vineyards. This region is a favourite for those seeking a walking holiday in Italy with authenticity baked in. Beneath the chestnut woods near Castelnuovo, truffles still grow wild. Perhaps your guide will let you in on a few secret spots! A highlight will be your stay at Agriturismo Braccicorti, where a Chianti tasting (or two) is never far away.
4. Prosecco hills & hidden Venice Raise a glass to Italy’s bubbly heartland on a walk through the UNESCO-listed Prosecco Hills. Meander through vineyard-covered slopes, pop in at family-run wineries for tastings, and soak in views that stretch from Alpine foothills to Adriatic shores. You’ll love your stay at our characterful hotel on the Prosecco Road in Pieve di Soligo – part of Italy’s oldest wine route. Then swap the hills for the hidden corners of Venice, where our expert local guides lead you through secret alleyways and into artisan workshops – proof that walking holidays Italy-style can uncover treasures beyond the trails.
5. Fairytale southern towns: Puglia & Matera Our local roots run deep in southern Italy and it shows. Walk handpicked trails through the Itria Valley’s trulli-topped villages of Alberobello, Locorotondo and Cisternino, passing olive groves, dry-stone walls and sun-warmed fig trees. One unforgettable day leads you on foot through Gravina Canyon into ancient Matera, its cave dwellings carved into the rock. Stay in a welcoming masseria, where you’ll dine on dishes made by those who’ve known us for years. With heartwarming community connections and off-the-beaten-track adventures, this is southern Italy with soul.
This trip was nothing short of transformative. I have not travelled much in my life, at least not trips like this one, but nothing could have prepared me for how deeply this experience would impact me. From the first morning waking up in Bomerano, sometimes literally inside the clouds, I felt a new kind of aliveness I had never felt before. Every direction I looked was breathtaking, and every day left me feeling inspired, connected and genuinely grateful. What started as a simple hiking holiday quickly became something life changing, and our group bonded in a way that lifted my spirit more than I ever expected. It truly felt like stepping into a dream I never wanted to end. Every hike, every day, offered another reason to fall in love with life again.
Grazie assai, Agerola. Dentro le tue nuvole ho ritrovato il respiro, e nei tuoi sentieri ho imparato a vivere il momento. Non sognarlo soltanto: vivilo.
This tour was an amazing way to experience the heart of Tuscany. The itinerary was perfectly balanced with cultural visits, delicious food and wine experiences, and plenty of free time to explore or relax. Some highlights for me were the guided tour of Siena, where we tasted incredible pastries made from unique local recipes, the pasta-making class in Chianti with a warm and welcoming family, and the wine tastings at beautiful family-run estates where we learned so much about what we were enjoying. Our day in Florence was equally wonderful. The hotel in Pancole was cozy and inviting and all the family and staff were so welcoming, and our tour leader made everything smooth and enjoyable. A fantastic trip filled with unforgettable memories!
We are an Australian couple who are first time Exodus clients. We had a wonderful week hiking the stunning Amalfi Coast in September with a great group of people.

What makes your walking holidays in Italy unique?
Our walking holidays in Italy go far beyond the guidebook. With decades of experience and strong local ties, each route is crafted with insider knowledge. Iconic highlights aside, we know it’s the secret spots and stories that stay with you – like staying in the tiny hilltop village of Pancole, where we’re treated to classic Italian hospitality by the Sabatini family.
Are there small group walking tours available in Italy?
Yes, all our trips are small group tours, typically with 5 to 16 travellers. Whether you’re joining Tuscany Walks & Chianti Wines with a partner, or tackling Tour du Mont Blanc Hotel Trek solo, our groups are always welcoming. Shared meals, guided walks and spontaneous stories along the way help friendships form naturally.
What is the activity level required for your walking holidays in Italy?
Can I join a walking holiday in Italy as a solo traveller?
Absolutely! Solo travellers make up nearly half our travellers. On every trip, you can opt to share a room with someone of the same gender or pay extra for your own. Either way, you’ll be welcomed as a solo traveller. Read more about what’s included on our solo travel holidays page.
What are the highlights of your walking holidays in Italy?
Italy’s greatest sights come alive on foot – and often with fewer crowds. Climb the Path of the Gods above Positano, picnic beneath the spires of Tre Cime in the Dolomites, or wander among trulli rooftops in Alberobello. A favourite moment on our Tuscany Walks & Chianti Wines trip? That would be wine tasting at a family-run estate after a gentle hilltop stroll. On Walks & Food of the Italian Riviera, it’s the iconic clifftop trails – and the seafood feasts after.
Do your walking holidays in Italy include cultural or culinary experiences?
Always. From wine tasting in Tuscany and cooking classes in Erice, to walking tours with historians in Pompeii, our trips are designed to satisfy curious minds (and hungry ones). You’ll sample strudel in Dolomite refuges and dine under the stars in Puglian masserie. Culture and cuisine are never optional extras!
Which regions and trails are featured in your walking holidays in Italy?
Our routes span Italy’s full geographic range, from alpine summits to southern olive groves. On Walking the Amalfi Coast, follow the legendary Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods). In the north, Walk the Prosecco Hills & Hidden Venice winds through vineyard-clad slopes between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, before slipping into the artsy corners of Venice. On Classic Dolomites Premium Adventure, hike below the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. And in the south, Walking in Puglia & Matera features trulli-lined walks between Alberobello and Locorotondo, plus a canyon approach to the ancient city of Matera. Each tour mixes well-planned routes with scenic surprises, revealing Italy one trail at a time.
What type of accommodation is included in your walking holidays in Italy?
We handpick accommodations that reflect the spirit of each region. You might stay at the 400-year-old Hotel Adler in Villabassa or relax at a riverside hotel on the Prosecco Road. In Tuscany, unwind at Agriturismo Braccicorti, a hillside farmhouse where the food is as good as the views – and that’s saying something! On Walking the Amalfi Coast, you might stay at Santa Caterina, home to Palinuro’s oldest ice cream shop. Comfort and character come standard.
Are guided walking tours included in your walking holidays in Italy?
Yes – every walking holiday includes guided walks led by our local experts. They know the secret spots, best bakeries, and historical context that turns a path into a story. Whether you’re tackling switchbacks in the Alps or following shepherd’s trails in Garfagnana, you’re in safe hands. Our guides pace walks according to the group and are as handy with a first aid kit as they are with a wine recommendation.
What is the best time of year for walking holidays in Italy?
Generally, spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer the best balance of pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. For alpine regions like the Dolomites, summer brings clear trails and dramatic skies. For southern destinations like Puglia or Amalfi, early spring or late autumn provides sun without the sizzle.
