Discover a heaven for walkers in southern Spain, where life is simple and the landscapes are breathtaking
Outside the golden cultural triangle of Seville, Cordoba and Granada, the rural landscape of Andalucía is breathtaking. This hiking adventure in Spain takes us through rugged hills, sunflower fields and olive groves, while also visiting the limestone peaks of Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, El Chorro gorge, and the cliffside walkway of El Caminito del Rey. In this corner of Europe, the excesses of modern life do not seem to have taken root and our home for the week is the perfect example: a rustic cortijo (farmhouse) in the agricultural heartlands, which is reserved exclusively for our groups. Additionally, there’s a whole day reserved to explore the magnificent city of Seville.
Please note: There are Activity Level 2 (Leisurely & Moderate) or Activity Level 4 (Moderate & Challenging) departures for this trip. Please check the Dates & Prices tab to confirm the Activity Level rating for each departure before booking as these do not run simultaneously. For a day-by-day schedule for each Activity Level, see the itinerary tab.

All departures: Adventure starts at Cortijo Rosario, Algamitas
Begin your adventure at Cortijo Rosario in the heart of the Andalucían countryside, around 62mi (100km) from Malaga. Our converted farmhouse is just a short walk from Algamitas, a peaceful traditional village far from big towns or cities. It’s the ideal chance to experience the real Spain, while still offering easy access to the best walking spots and towns such as Olvera, Setenil and Seville, which we’ll visit during the week.
Around 6pm, say holato your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.
Your tour leader then ensures a big Andalucían welcome over dinner.
Want more time in Andalucia? Secure pre-tour hotel nights through your sales representative.
Please note: There are Activity Level 2 (Easy/Moderate) and Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging) departures for this trip. This itinerary provides a day-by-day schedule for each Activity Level. Please check the Dates & Prices tab to confirm the Activity Level rating for each departure before booking. During each week, there will only be one Activity Level (2 or 4) which means these will never run simultaneously.
Meals included: Dinner
Day
2
Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) departures: Gentle walk to Villanueva de San Juan • Optional tapas lunch
Take a guided walk on the trails and paths around the cortijo and on to the neighbouring village of Villanueva. The countryside surrounding Algamitas is picture-perfect, covered with olive trees, beautiful farmland and rolling hills.
During the walk, our leader will give us a good overview of the rural lifestyle and traditions in this part of the world, which are largely based around the production of olive oil. An optional tapas lunch in the village gives us a chance to soak up the authentic Andalucían atmosphere. Once back at the cortijo, enjoy free time by the pool or with a drink on the lovely outdoor terrace. We then have dinner and stay overnight at the cortijo.
Distance: 7.5mi (12km); Ascent: 1,083ft (330m); descent: 1,083ft (330m); approximately six hours walking including stops
Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner
Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging) departures: Penon Crag walk
Enjoy a full day’s walk from our base at Cortijo Rosario to the impressive summit of Penon Crag, which towers above Algamitas. We take a circular route up to the campsite and then climb, quite steeply in places, over rocky terrain to the summit at 3,678ft (1,121m). Later, return to the campsite and head back to the cortijo by a different route.
Distance: 10mi (16km); Ascent: 2,788ft (850m); descent: 2,788ft (850m); approximately six hours walking including stops
Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner
Day
3
Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) departures: Walk in the Sierra de Grazalema
Our private bus will drive us high into the Grazalema Mountains, over the Pass of the Doves. Designated a Unesco biosphere reserve in 1977, the Sierra de Grazalema was declared the first natural park in Andalucía in 1984 and is one of most ecologically outstanding areas in Spain.
It is best-known for having a spectacularly rugged limestone landscape of cliffs, gullies, caves and gorges. We walk up past this fantastic scenery and down into the white village of Benaocaz.
Distance: 5.5mi (9km); Ascent: 892ft (272m); descent: 1,788ft (545); approximately four to five hours walking including stops
Our walk takes us to the summit of Terril, which at 3,704ft (1,129m) is the highest point in the Seville province. We take transport to the start of the walk – about 10 minutes from Cortijo Rosario.
Our route climbs steeply onto the long ridge of Terril. Here, the gradient eases but the terrain is quite rocky and uneven in places. From the summit on a clear day, we have a fantastic view over the rolling plains of Seville. We retrace our steps along the wide, rolling ridge before descending to the south and picking up a sandy track back to Algamitas.
Distance: 10.5mi (17km); Ascent: 1,837ft (560m); descent: 2,789ft (850m); approximately six hours walking
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day
4
Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) departures: Walk to Caños Santos Monastery • Walk to the white village of Setenil
Today we set out from Cortijo Rosario, walking through Algamitas farmland to the abandoned monastery of Caños Santos, where we will have lunch. In the afternoon, follow the Ruta de los Molinos along the river that runs through the white village of Setenil de las Bodegas. Built under the overhanging ledge of a gorge, Setenil is not only known for having standout architecture but also for bars, restaurants and food shops, which are the best in the region. We have free time to discover Setenil and later return to the cortijo by private minibus.
Distance: 7.5mi (12km); Ascent: 902ft (275m); descent: 902ft (275m); approximately five to six hours walking including stops
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging) departures: Walk to Caños Santos Monastery • Walk to the white village of Setenil
We set out from Cortijo Rosario through Algamitas, passing through varied farmland before reaching our lunch spot close to the abandoned monastery of Caños Santos.
In the afternoon we follow a network of old drovers’ routes to the fascinating white village of Setenil, where little houses sit under the overhanging ledge of a gorge. We return by private bus to Cortijo Rosario.
Distance: 10mi (16km); Ascent: 1,476ft (450m); descent: 656ft (200m); approximately five to six hours walking including stops
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day
5
All departures: Free day in Seville • Return to the cortijo after dinner
At 9am, we transfer (1hr 40min) by private minibus to Seville, the magnificent capital of Andalucía and one of the first conquests of the Moors.
Our drop-off/pick-up point is on Menendez Pelayo, opposite the Jardines de Murillo and a 10-minute walk from the cathedral and Royal Alcázar.
The day is free to sightsee at your own pace, though we’ve found most choose to explore the Royal Alcázar, a palace complex dating from Roman times and later used by both Moorish and Christian rulers. Tickets (€15.50) can be booked through your tour leader at the welcome briefing − entrance is typically at midday.
The tour leader can also book you a tapas-tasting menu at Pasaje Bar nearby (normally for around 2.30pm) or a early evening flamenco show at La Casa de Flamenco or Casa de Guitarra. Other sights you might like to visit include the cathedral, Metropol Parasol and La Casa Palacio del Conde de Lebrija.
During your exploration of Seville, make sure to pick up some dinner to eat on the bus back to the cortijo. We typically arrive around 8.30pm and the kitchen is closed, though there are restaurants open in the village.
Meals included: Breakfast
Day
6
Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) departures: Visit El Chorro gorge and walk El Caminito del Rey
A short drive takes us to El Chorro gorge, where we are dropped off at the Guadalhorce Dam and reservoir to begin our walk. We’ll head to the start of El Caminito del Rey, a narrow cliffside path hanging 328ft (100m) above the Guadalhorce river. Originally built around 1905, and improved around 1921, it fell into disrepair, earning it the moniker ‘the most dangerous path in the world’ or even the ‘walk of death’.
The new Caminito del Rey was reconstructed and reopened to the public in 2015, with the route and design replicating (as much as possible) the old one, but with higher safety standards. After, there will be a chance to relax and rest by the reservoir.
The Caminito del Rey ticket is included in the cost of the trip and will be arranged by Exodus upon booking. However, please be aware that for reservations made less than 90 days prior to departure, there may be a supplement to pay to guarantee entrance as ticket numbers are limited. We will be able to check this upon booking and confirm the amount of the supplement if it applies.
Distance: 5.5mi (9km); Ascent: 574ft (175m); descent: 902ft (275m); approximately three hours walking
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging) departures: Visit El Chorro Gorge and walk El Caminito del Rey
See Day 6 of Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) itinerary description for further details.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day
7
Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) departures: Walk a circuit around the Peñon overlooking Algamitas
Today we walk around the impressive Peñon Crag, which looms over Cortijo Rosario. El Peñon is the highest point in the Seville province, 3,700ft (1,130m) above sea level, offering dramatic views of the landscape around Algamitas and the neighbouring villages, hills and farmland. On the way back to the cortijo, we stop for drinks on a lovely panoramic terrace.
Distance: 9mi (14km); Ascent: 1,542ft (470m); descent: 1,542ft (470m); approximately five hours walking including stops
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging) departures: Circular walk from Montejaque, in the heart of the Grazalema Natural Park
We drive from Cortijo Rosario by private bus to the attractive white village of Montejaque, which sits in the heart of Grazalema Natural Park where our circular walk begins.
The trek takes us into hidden valleys with some of the most spectacular karst rock formations in the area. This is limestone country, and the rocky path can be slippery when wet so good ankle support is recommended.
All departures: Adventure ends at Cortijo Rosario, Algamitas
Our final breakfast is the perfect chance to reflect on the many highlights of this unforgettable Andalucian escape. Once you’re full up, bid a fond hasta pronto to our hosts, who may well feel more like family by now, before starting your return home. If you would like additional time in Andalucia please speak to your sales representative about extending your stay.
Meals included: Breakfast
Essential Info
Is this trip for you?
This trip is Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate) or Activity Level 4 (Moderate & Challenging) depending on dates, with five walking days. For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.
Walking is mostly on well-marked paths; this is a hilly area, so expect some easy ascents. Walking hours stated in the itinerary are given as approximates only. Timings include lunch and photo stops and will vary depending on the pace of your group.
The majority of drives are short except for the journey to Seville, which is approximately two hours.
While most departures are rated Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate), we also offer trips with Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging), which allow us to ascend the higher peaks and walk on more challenging terrain for longer hours. It is important to be fit on these departures.
Please note, all activities are optional and a rest day may be taken at any point should you prefer to relax at the cortijo.
Cortijo Rosario is renovated to a high standard, while maintaining traditional heritage, so the farmhouse should not be considered a luxury villa or hotel.
Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility. However if you are a regular traveller on such trips, please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition.

Vaccinations and Health
Spain
There are no required vaccinations. However, you may want to consider vaccinations for tetanus and rabies. Please confirm with your doctor or travel clinic.
Passport
All travellers must have a full passport for Exodus tours; generally, this should be valid for six months after the date of your scheduled return home. Requirements change often and other regulations may apply, so be sure to check with the nearest embassy of the country you intend to visit.
Visa
Spain
Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Spain. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.
Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.
All breakfasts, four picnic lunches and six evening meals are included.
Breakfast: Continental buffet breakfast with local fruit and yoghurt.
Lunch: Packed lunches are provided for most day walks, usually filled with cheese/cold meats. On some days it is possible to enjoy authentic tapas in local villages.
Dinner: All food is freshly prepared from locally grown seasonal produce, and the meals come with complimentary wine, tea and coffee. A selection of soft and alcoholic drinks are available at the bar (payable locally).
Vegetarians are generally well catered for at Cortijo Rosario.
Please note that due to the remote location of the accommodation, it is not always possible or ideal for the local staff to make last-minute menu changes. It is, therefore, crucial you advise us on booking if you have any special dietary requirements.
Weather
Spring generally has pleasant daytime temperatures ranging from 12C to 23C (53F to 73F), with evenings being a little cooler. There is the chance of rain, which then offers views of beautiful spring flowers. Summer months are hot and dry with daytime temperatures around 21C to 35C (70F to 95F), dropping to between 17C and 25C (62F to 77F) at night. Autumn brings cooler weather, although it is still fairly dry. The possibility of rain is more likely in winter months but temperatures stay mild in the daytime, becoming cooler after sunset.
Cortijo Rosario, a converted farmhouse in the Andalucían countryside
Our base for the week is Cortijo Rosario, a converted farmhouse reserved exclusively for our groups. In the heart of the romantic Andalucían countryside, in the Seville province, the cortijo overlooks the small village of Algamitas and is within reach of Seville city and the charming town of Ronda.
Together with its neighbouring sister village Villanueva, Algamitas is known as the forgotten village: modern development has more or less passed by and life goes on as it has for generations. Little English is spoken in the villages, as the tourism boom on the coast has not affected the welcoming community. The main income is agriculture, with olives the predominant crop along with cereals, wheat and sunflowers. This rural location really offers a fascinating insight into the real Andalucía.
All rooms have private bathrooms and there is a bar, lounge, outdoor dining area, and a lovely pool open year-round (not heated). There are also two friendly dogs and a cat owned by the manager that like to lie on the patio in the sun.
Cortijo Rosario has been renovated while retaining its traditional heritage. It is not a luxury villa or hotel, but all rooms are unique and have different sizes, as per the original structure of the building. Towels are changed once during the week and rooms are serviced every other day.

Worth knowing
There is one single room available, which can be guaranteed on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis with a supplement payable in advance on booking.
We may be able to confirm double rooms for single use closer to departure. Please contact our sales representative no more than two weeks before departure to check if this is available.
Due to the remote location, special dietary requirements must be declared and requested at the time of booking.
The road track to the hotel is due to undergo renovation works in the coming months. Please note that the current condition is currently problematic for some transfers, so a short walk to the hotel may be required.
Absolutely wonderful. Michael (our group leader) was incredible. Best leader I’ve ever experienced. His knowledge and passion for everything elevated the trip experience through the roof.

Great mix of activity, culture, and information
This was our first Exodus trip. We loved the group size (11) and its compatibility, mix of activities, and the incredible knowledge of the tour leader, Michael/Miguel. On most days we were out and about from 9 to 5. The terrain was lovely – hills and mountains surrounding rolling pastureland and olive farms. We saw and walked through so many white villages, and some of us took an extra 4 hour trip to Ronda, one of the most famous. The hiking was moderate. For me, the oldest by several years at age 75, it was at times tough because of the many ups and downs with the inclines occasionally too steep and long. The other 10 handled it with less trouble. Our tour leader, Michael/Miguel, knew everything about farming, geology, plants and animals and birds, and the history of the area. We all marveled at the extent of his knowledge! The farmhouse we stayed in was lovely with good food (the paella the last night was the best!), though the rooms lacked good lighting and the beds seemed a bit soft. This is a fun trip to go on for the activity, lovely scenery, and variety. We combined it with 2 days in Malaga and 4 in Granada and found every day rich and magical.
Most Inspirational Moment
The hike in El Chorro gorge on the Caminito del Rey and walking through El Real Alcazaba, the royal palace, in Seville (tickets many in our group bought on their own for our day in Seville.)
Thoughts on Group Leader
He was excellent -- well organized and incredibly knowledgeable about everything -- plants, farming, geology, birds, animals, and human history.
Advice for Potential Travellers
You definitely need to be fit to do this trip. Be prepared for some challenging uphill stretches, fortunately not continuous. Since Exodus ranks hikes 1 through 7 not 1 through 5 I'd say that there are some parts of the hikes that are 3's not just 2's.

An amazing trip!
I’ve wanted to visit Andalucia for more than 20 years and this trip did not disappoint. It was, to me, the perfect blend of rural walking and city time- with my favorite moments being the pastures and small villages, learning about olive production, local plants, and life in Algamitas. The Cortijo is lovely, and though simple, had everything we need (including a pool!) The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful and Felipe, the manager, was especially thoughtful in taking care of everyone. My traveling companion and I both have dietary/medical restrictions and Felipe and the wonderful kitchen staff went to great lengths to ensure we had what we needed (we know gluten free pasta, bread and cereal can’t be easy to come by in a rural area, and that making a separate version of a meal is a lot of work), but made it seem effortless. Our guide, Miguel, is funny and personable and knows so much about the area: archaeology, geology, plant life, birds, and people- and he clearly makes a great effort to know the neighbors in the village and connect with people. He also runs a tight ship to keep people safe and cared for! He also goes to great lengths to make sure his groups have a great time and get to do the things they want to do. I thought the walking was the right challenge for a level 2- the biggest variable was the sun and heat, but he made sure we were hydrated and prepared. We didn’t have any rain, but that would also make for a different kind of challenge. And we lucked out with a group of lovely, funny, caring fellow-travelers. This trip was to celebrate my friends’ and my 40th birthdays this year, and it was exactly what we wanted it to be!
Most Inspirational Moment
Miguel arranged for us to see a top-quality flamenco show in Sevilla. Everyone in our group who went was really impressed and energized by the performance.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Miguel is awesome. So knowledgeable, fun, safety-focused, and makes an effort to connect. He ensured there were modifications for people on days when they only wanted to do part of the hike, made sure everyone stayed hydrated, and took us to some nice coffee shops and bars in the small villages that not only broke up the walking day nicely, but helped us see more of how people live in the surrounding villages. He knows a ton about the geology, birds, plant life and history of the region. It was seldom that I asked him a question he couldn't answer. He also made sure we had interesting recommendations for the "on your own" excursions. He took great care of us.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Carry a light pack that allows for a lot of water- it is hot, even in late October, bring your rain gear just in case, and make sure you have the right foot gear. Also, do all the "optional" pieces you can. We had the opportunity to do an extra afternoon in Ronda and it was GREAT. If you have that option, do it!

A Magical Escape to Andalucía: Rustic Charm & Culinary Bliss
Our recent trip to Andalucía was nothing short of spectacular. Nestled in the heart of the countryside, I stayed at a rustic Cortijo that perfectly blended traditional charm with modern comfort. Surrounded by olive groves and rolling hills, the Cortijo offered a peaceful retreat with breathtaking views and a cozy, authentic atmosphere.
What truly elevated the experience was the cuisine. Every meal was a celebration of Andalusian flavors—fresh, vibrant, and deeply satisfying – each dish was crafted with care and passion.
Whether exploring nearby whitewashed villages, hiking through the Sierra Nevada, or simply relaxing under the stars with a glass of local wine, this trip was unforgettable.
Highly recommended for anyone seeking a soulful escape filled with beauty, flavor, and authentic Spanish hospitality.

Rustic Spain
Stunning scenery, hilly walks but easy terrain. The Cortico has great views and the outside areas are lovely. Bedrooms not so much. Some rooms are very small, I was allocated a small single room with a single bed, think student dorm, for which I was charged a extra!!! I have marked the trip down for that reason
Plentiful food with alternative diets well catered for .

Single travellers who pay the supplement should request a double room. Lot's of fish and seafood so bear this in mind and request an alternative when booking if you don't like or can't eat fish

Superb walking, culture and food
A wonderful walking holiday in Andalucia with a good mix of hiking, scenery, culture and amazing food, particularly at the excellent Cortijo Rosario farmhouse that acted as “base camp” for the week. It included great days sight-seeing in Sevilla and Ronda and an introduction to the local wildlife and biodiversity.
Most Inspirational Moment
Walking across the legendary El Caminito del Rey gorge and bridge - a bucket list item ticked off.

Mike was amazing - always enthusastic, friendly, and a bottomless font of knowledge about the local area, Spanish culture and the walking itself. His trick of pouring ice water into your hat to keep you cool is the stuff of legend.

Amazing Andalucia exceeded our expectations !
This trip was a great combination of walking in the beautiful countryside, visiting traditional villages, sightseeing in the cities as well as embracing the local culture & learning about the forna & floral!
The trip is great for people wanting to try a walking holiday as the walks only take a few hours per day, allowing for rest in the afternoons. On several days, you can choose to complete part of the walk & return to the hotel if you are struggling which some of our group did.
The Cortijo Rosario has a relaxed vibe so we felt at home straight away! The staff were fantastic & nothing was too much trouble for them! Additionally, the food was fantastic & gave us an authentic taste of Spain!
Most Inspirational Moment
Seeing all of the wild flowers & birds on our walks!
We loved the variety of walks around small villages, meadows, cities to hills.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Miguel/Mike was a lot of fun & was excellent at tailoring the trip to our individual tastes so we felt that we got the maximum out of the holiday!
The weather was very hot which is not ideal for walking in but Miguel ensured that we took regular breaks & took iced water to cool us down so that we kept safe! He had excellent knowledge of the flora & forna in the area as well as the culture so we were well informed! We liked how he supported the local businesses by taking us to buy food, coffee etc & he has a very good relationship with both the hotel staff & the villagers too!
Advice for Potential Travellers
Please take suitable walking gear, ie walking boots not trainers & wicking clothes, not cotton, especially if it was 35-38F like we had! You will need a good 2 litres of water per day so reuseable bottles are essential! Visit Ronda if the option is available as it it stunning! Otherwise, enjoy discovering such a beautiful area!

Phenomenal personal experience in the hills of Andalucia
Everything about the week was exceptional and memorable. The hikes were different every day and highlighted the special and significant features of the area. Our group leader, Miquel/Mike, was an endless source of information on the human and natural history, and the flora and fauna, making a point to include what the group was interested in. Our group bonded well right from the first day, as we tackled a rainy hike and then the ensuing mud the next day. Mike was constantly aware of and concerned for everyone’s safety and adapted the speed of the walk to accommodate all of us. His pleasant demeanor, sense of humor, punctuality, and attention to detail made the week a pleasure for all. We could not have asked for a better leader!
Most Inspirational Moment
The hike up the mountains into the National Park was a highlight not only for the magnificent views, but also the challenge of working together to manoeuvre through the muddy and slippery landscape.
Thoughts on Group Leader
For all the reasons mentioned above, our group as a whole appreciated everything that Mike brought to the week as an exceptional leader.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Bring your appetite! The meals served at Cortijo Rosario were delicious, varied, and more than plentiful! The staff made every effort to cater to individual dietary needs. The Cortijo is very comfortable, and the rustic vibe fits the country setting perfectly. It is advised to note the packing list included in the trip notes; sturdy hiking boots and good rain gear are a must.

Walking in Andalucia
Our group had an amazing week walking the hills and countryside of Andalucia. Our group leader, Mike (Miquel), was an endless source of information on the history, geography, archeology anthropology, and the flora and fauna of the area. Every walk was different and Mike highlighted this and added the details to bring this beautiful landscape to life! Our group bonded so well over these common interests, thanks also to Mike for recognizing and catering to our individual strengths and limitations.
Most Inspirational Moment
Our most challenging walk, due to very muddy conditions, in the high hills of the National Park, was also the most inspiring due to not only the incredible vistas but also the highlights along the way, such as the wildflowers, bird sightings, and a picnic amongst the ruins of old buildings.
