This iconic mountain range looms above southern Spain and is home to diverse ecosystems and endemic flora and fauna. The Unesco Biosphere Reserve encompasses much of the landscape and boasts the highest peak in mainland Spain, Mulhacén. As you hike along meandering trails, you’ll discover Moorish settlements hidden inside beautiful valleys, which are hugged on all sides by snow-dusted peaks. Visit the white village of Trevelez, the highest in Spain, and sample the delicious serrano ham.

Meaning ‘The King’s Little Path’, The Caminito del Rey is a spectacular walkway that runs through the Gaitanes Gorge in El Chorro. Originally built in the early 20th century for workers at the nearby hydroelectric plant, the path fell into disrepair and became known as one of the most dangerous hikes in the world. Following extensive renovations, the path reopened in 2015 and stretches along the steep walls of the gorge for approximately eight kilometres. Along the trail, you’ll pass through canyons and cliffs and enjoy panoramic views of Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge.

Also known as La Garganta del Chorro, El Chorro Gorge is a dramatic natural feature formed by river erosion and can be reached along the Caminito del Rey. This precipitous walkway clings to the limestone peaks and winds up to the gorge, famous for its steep cliffs which stand at 400 metres high. The path has been restored and is now a safe yet thrilling hike on our Andalucia trips. From El Chorro Gorge, you can soak up magnificent views of the rugged mountains and the Guadalhorce River below.
