Spectacular sights and scenary

Chile is a stunning country that has something for everyone. This trip provided a wonderful insight and delivered a variety of sights and scenery: from desert and volcanoes, to lakes (and more volcanoes) then mountains and glaciers, followed for me with the legendary moai of Rapa Nui (Easter Island).

As the itinerary makes clear, a significant amount of time is spent travelling (I feel I am now very familiar with Santiago airport!) but that is due to the large distances covered. There is very little ‘down time’ and several early starts so it is definitely not for someone who wants a relaxing holiday. However, if you enjoy spectacular views and new experiences then it ticks all the boxes.

Our group of 16 got on well and, alongside our tour leader and drivers, helped to make it a fantastic holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

It is impossible to choose a single highlight as there were so many. The colourful houses and street art of Valparaiso; the Atacama desert with its rock formations, lagoons, wildlife and the most amazing night sky; the boat trip on Lago Todos los Santos, gazing up at the snow-topped Orsorno volcano; the breathtakingly beautiful Torres del Paine and Last Hope Sound; watching the mesmerising waves of the Pacific Ocean break on the rocky shores around Rapa Nui and visits to places such as Rano Kau and Ahu Tongariki.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nacho was calm, caring and a real gentleman. He enjoyed telling us tales of his life as a flight attendant and introducing us, with a mix of enthusiasm and humour, to his wonderful country. He always had a variety of restaurant suggestions for dinner to cater for people's different preferences. I was the only one in the group who had chosen the Easter Island extension. Nacho took me to the airport for the flight, met me upon my return a few days later and took me back again the next day for the journey home to the UK. He waited while I checked in and then, deciding that the queue to go through customs was too long, took me to another part of the airport where the queue was much shorter.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I took advice from a previous review and took Chilean pesos with me (which meant I could gauge exchange rates and determine when to purchase them). As a result I managed with cash throughout the trip but others in the group used their credit or debit cards without difficulty in most places. Chile is notably expensive. Just one main course and some water for dinner could cost £12-£15 and, in Easter Island, it was even pricier (for example, a fish and rice dish with a natural fruit juice in a café away from the harbour cost over £25). This was a more sedate trip than I had anticipated so don't choose it if you prefer or expect some proper walks or long hikes. It is a busy schedule with some long days. There isn't much time to do handwashing and get clothes dry before heading off to the next location so you may wish to factor that into your packing. The hotel in San Pedro also has notices in the rooms asking people not to wash clothes. I ended up wishing I'd packed more long-sleeved shirts as I found myself wearing them for sun protection in the desert as well as protection against both the sun and dengue fever-carrying mosquitoes in Easter Island. If you like a bath, bring a universal bath plug as many of the hotels don't provide one.

A Privilege

It was a privilege to be part of this journey through Kenya and to be able to see the fantastic wildlife there. The number and close views of lion, leopard, buffalo, two types of rhino, wildebeest, mongoose, hyena, elephant, giraffe, various monkeys, jackal, warthog, zebra, various gazelle and antelope, cheetah, croc….( I could go on!) in one week was amazing. We saw maybe 80-90 species of bird that were new to us.
The trip was well organised and the guides and accommodation were excellent. The travelling was fine and the vehicles very good. It was easy to take photos from the vehicles. The March weather was hotter than usual and overall the trip was quite tiring, though not demanding in terms of walking. We flew to Nairobi a day early, which suited us. Overall a great trip, leaving us wanting to return.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing a leopard at close quarters.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Davis and Peter were very helpful and knowledgeable. They took any minor hitches very seriously sorted them quickly and generally were very professional.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take plenty of money as Kenya isn't cheap.

Bucket list ticked

This trip covered everything anyone with an interest in Egyptology would want to see.
Would highly recommend if you want a comprehensive trip covering all the main ancient sites.

Most Inspirational Moment

Karnak Temple and King Tut's tomb.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent and very knowledgeable. Very personable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take small notes, 5, 10, 20's. You will need 5's for public bathrooms and smaller notes for tips. US dollars and Euros are also used widely but ensure they are fresh and non damaged notes.

Interesting and fun

Ankor Wat is obviously a must-see. Cyclying along the city walls without tourists, just water and people fishing on one side and the jungle on the other to the sound of cicadas made it even more magical. Our guide Soukimm was brilliant throughout and fascinating on the stone friezes in the Bayon temple. See 13th century life with noodle making, healthcare and every day life. All the temples are truly awesome.

S-21 and the Killing Fields in Phnom Pehn are a reminder of how important peace is and the dangers of extremism. The cyclo ride throught the traffic at sunset really gave you a different view of this rapidly changing city. Battambang was a cool place and it was salutary to see how hard ordinary people have to work to survive. Eating bbq barracudas on the deserted island was also a highlight although thankfully they now avoid Koh Kong.

This is a poor country undergoing huge changes, only 5% of the population are over 60 following the Pol Pot massacres and as such fascinating. The crab/sea food markets of Kampor are wonderful and if you fancy snacking on crunchy crickets or ants then do try them.

Our group and guide Soukimm was amazing and we had such fun all the time. However, be aware you are off out at 8am nearly every day and do travel in a bus on dodgy part-made roads for about 5 hours a day.

I recommend taking a gel seat for the bikes!

So if you don’t just want to tick off key wonders of the world but want to explore and see a country then choose this trip – you won’t regret it.

Wonderful Trip

Just back from a wonderfully exciting ,fulfilling and enjoyable trip across India with a lovely group of people.
Accommodation and food of an exceptionally high standard.

Most Inspirational Moment

Meeting with and seeing how the people of Tamil Nadu get on with life in a manner that seemed to be so bereft of aggression and so gentle while welcoming visitors despite living in the most primitive of conditions. Seeing at close quarters the level of service provided at all of our overnight stays. The cycle through the tea and rubber plantations.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Shekar R. and his crew of Keryun, Bevan and were as attentive to our needs as any people could possibly be.Our water bottles were filled before we asked, our bikes were ready and we were minded and cosseted from start to finish. Shekar is very proud of his country and was keen to allow us to experience as much of its culture and people as time would allow. He took every opportunity to allow us to gain extra enjoyment from out trip by seizing opportunities which presented themselves en route such as arranging for us to join a wedding party for lunch...meeting a young schoolgirl to recite poetry and visiting houses benefits . He coped with requests and difficulties in a most efficient and caring manner and ensured that all were included in his plans.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The temperatures during March this year were exceptionally high (up to 45C) but I would advise people to travel for trips in Dec/Jan /Feb if possible. Drink as much water as possible...then some more.

What a fantastic experience - absolutely world class from Exodus

Other reviewers say it all, but i would add the following. What a great group we had, 10 Brits and 8 kiwis – as one of our number said, we quickly became like family. Our tour leader, Linh Vo was outstanding and was always working hard to keep us safe, fed and entertained, but it was his willingness to go above and beyond to help members of our group that had some serious challenges to deal with that marks him out as an exceptional tour leader. we were blessed with a superb support team (Y, Vu and Tanag – we salute you) and all four guys worked seamlessly to deliver a unique and truly memorable experience. Vietnam is wonderful – the people, the food, the scenery and the traffic in Saigon !! But it was made 100# better because of what we learned and where Linh selected for us to eat some truly wonderful grub.
We cant recommend this highly enough – quite simply the best holiday we have ever had and a list or fabulous memories too long to list here. Thanks to our wonderful group, to Linh and his team and to Exodus for creating life long memories

Most Inspirational Moment

30k downhill from Dalat and then 10k up the Hai Van pass a couple, of days later. Oh yes, and whale Island of course - fabulous

Thoughts on Group Leader

Exceptional - a truly superb ambassador for his country

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just do it - live the moment, live every single experience, savour the food, meet the friendly, warm and welcoming people and remember - the safest way to cross the road in Saigon is to just walk slowly across and keeping your fingers crossed and your eyes closed :-)

Best way to discover a beautiful island

Very well organised trip in a magnificent natural place.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hiking up in the cliffs of the northern coast.

Chile

This trip covered a lot of ground in a short time frame. I (and the rest of my group) agreed that the one area of improvement would be to include a visit to the wineries and have lunch in Valparaiso.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the stars in the Atacama Desert and the landscapes of Patagonia

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ignacio was wonderful. He was organized, attentive and had a good sense of humor.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring layers! It was unexpectedly cold when we visited the geysers.

Loved Every Minute

This holiday met my expectations and more,
It really does live up to its title of ‘Discover Sri Lanka’.
The itinerary is comprehensive and varied. In two weeks it looks at the culture and history of this truly beautiful island as well as there being many opportunities to observe its bird and wild life,
The hotels on this trip are comfortable and it was good to have a number of stays lasting more than one day.
Although I was unable to take part in some of the activities, thiose who did thoroughly enjoyed them.
The tour leader was excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting Polonnaruwa, the Martin Wickramasinghe Museum and the Game Drives. But it’s hard to close as I enjoyed the whole trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Neelaker, our group leader, was excellent. He is warm, caring, considerate and very knowledgeable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware that the walk on Day 10 on Horton Plain is approximately 9km.

Fantastic Cycling Trip

This was a fantastic cycling holiday and excellent way to see a good part of Vietnam and experience its culture from the bustling cities of Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, to historical cities such as Hoi An and Hue, as well as local villages and varying countryside. The trip is well balanced between biking (8 of 14 days), other activities (i.e. exploring the Cu Chi tunnels, caving, snorkeling, touring historic sites, shopping, etc.) and rest days at some idyllic locations (Whale Island, Ha Long Bay). The biking is rated as moderate and geared for biking enthusiasts or generally fit people as its mostly flat, some undulating sections, some “upulating” sections as our guide liked to characterize the predominantly uphill sections, a few tough climbs and a couple of super fun descents! The first few days on cycling is outside Ho Chi Minh, a bit busy and not too interesting (although the destinations were great). Thereafter the cycling becomes much more interesting and really fun! The trip is extremely well organized – I can’t say enough good things about our guide Son and the rest of the team. Our group of 17 was diverse but bonded quickly, were very supportive of one another (even to those who spread the Canadian cold around…) and enjoyed a lot of laughs and Tiger beer together, and even some singalongs with “Kennaoke” and his ukulele! The food and accommodation exceeded our expectations, and the Vietnamese people are extremely friendly and hospitable. Fantastic trip, don’t hesitate to do this one!

Most Inspirational Moment

Biking, its a toss up between the joy of the 5000 foot descent from Dalat and the 2000 foot climb of the Hai Van Pass (wasn't smiling nearing as much but great sense of accomplishment). Culturally, riding through the countryside with its lush rice paddies, water buffalo, hard working locals and many friendly children saying "hello" as you passed.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Son, was awesome. Well organized, very informative on Vietnamese history, culture and the environment (kudos here), communication skills were excellent (more understandable than most Brits...yikes, going to be in trouble for that comment!), very safety conscious, enthusiastic and encouraging, and able to keep the group focused and on schedule. Son and his family hosted dinner on the final evening of the trip, everyone from our group attended, and it was a magical evening, amazing food, lots of shared memories, laughs and hugs! The entire team supporting Son was also excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

1. Do some training beforehand, you'll enjoy the rides more and you'll want to experience the satisfaction of climbing the Hai Van pass. 2. Try all the food, its mostly great, just beware of the little red chilies! 3. Be prepared to barter in the markets and recognize you are getting fake products (make good gifts!) 4. Don't drink the water, stick to beer! Tiger is "go to" beer but the rest are good too, and inexpensive! 5. Buy some tailor made clothing in Hoi An at Yaly's or another reputable place. Its great quality, good value. I bought a number of Egyptian cotton dress shirts (and promptly threw out my older off the shelf ones when I got home) and my wife bought a few jumpsuits that she is eagerly waiting to display once the snow melts!
