Everest Base Camp Trek review by Julian Pomery
I’m 70. I had a yearning to see Everest since I was quite young. As I grew older, I hoped to do the trip with my sons but the length of the trip was not conducive. I wasn’t particularly fit but trained for a few months beforehand, not knowing if I could manage the amount of walking , let alone the unknown element of altitude.
Arriving in Kathmandu, the hotel was excellent and we had time to visit the old city of Thamel.
The flight to Lukla was a great experience in a small plane, next the start of the trek.
The ‘Teahouses’ along the way offered a warm convivial welcome, with varying numbers of other trekkers present. Suspension-bridge crossings, some several hundred metres long were great! We were lucky to have clear visibility and sunshine nearly every day as we progressed ever higher amid awe-inspiring scenery, expertly led by our leader Valerie Parkinson, and Nepalese guide Saroje. Our yakman Nawang took care of all our luggage except for our light daysacks.
We gazed up at Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Macalu, Pumori, to name but a few peaks. From various vantage points including the aptly named Everest View Hotel, we had excellent views of Everest with the South Summit and South Col.
We experienced at first hand the logistical marvel of how everything is transported up here; by yak, mule, dzo or porter.
Bird-life included Vultures and Golden Eagles soaring overhead, plus Tibetan Snow birds that took a fancy to my lemon drizzle cake on Kala Patthar during our final acclimatisation trek.
After taking in the Kumbhu Glacier, we reached Gorak Shep before the final push to Everest Base Camp itself. Unlike most other treks, we had ample time at Base Camp rock before the short walk to one of the expedition camps where we stayed overnight, amongst an array of camps looking like something out of a Bond movie. We witnessed a massive avalanche, and spent time on the ice shelf, truly surreal amongst the surrounding peaks.
Overall, it was tough but an utterly amazing experience, in the competent hands of our leader Valerie, a lifetime goal achieved.
Most Inspirational Moment
Spending time at Base Camp with the group. Also attending prayers at Thyangboche Monastery
Thoughts on Group Leader
Five Star.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Don't wait. Prepare well with your fitness. Tough, but a trip of a lifetime.

Unforgettable Journey
This trip could not have been better. Everything was meticulously planned and flawlessly implemented, the lodgings were beautiful, and the itinerary was just what I wanted: wildlife-centered. The safari guides were truly super-human in their ability to track and find the animals. They seemed to communicate with them and read their moods, all the while talking quietly to us about the animals’ diet, behavior, habits, and lifespans. Because we covered some long distances, we were able to see a lot of the countryside of Botswana and Zimbabwe, and we got to go to places that I couldn’t have gotten to on my own. It was a all-around superb trip.
Most Inspirational Moment
All the wildlife sightings were special, but maybe the highlight was seeing the white rhinos, because they are so rare. We went in on foot with 2 guide/trackers and 2 members of Zimbabwe's anti-poaching unit. I really appreciated their passion for and dedication to protecting the animals. Seeing the rhinos also completed our sighting of the Big 5, so that was truly an ecstatic moment.

Group leader Onary Chimunda and our driver Sam Mnemo were exceptional. Onary went above and beyond in getting to know everyone personally, attending to unexpected problems, and team-building. He set up a WhatsApp group chat so we could all share our best photos. Not only did he see to all the logistics, but he personally cooked for us during our 2 days camping out in the Delta. Sam cheerfully drove us through some pretty rough terrain, always with energy and good humor. We were very lucky to have them as our guides.
Advice for Potential Travellers
If you ever get the chance to go to Africa, drop everything and join this trip.

Would thoroughly recommend this trip with Exodus. It was well organised and we didn't have to worry about any of the transport, accommodation as it was all done for us. All we had to do was walk and enjoy it! We also walked with some lovely people from the USA so that was a bonus.

From Valleys to Victory: My Unforgettable Nubra Trek!
My first high-altitude hike – the Nubra Valley trek – and all I can say is WOW! With Valerie Parkinson as our tour leader, we were set up for an unforgettable adventure from day one. The incredible cook, knowledgeable guides, and fantastic camp crew made every moment a joy. If you’re thinking of exploring the Nubra Valley, you simply can’t go wrong with this trip. The only challenge now? Deciding on my next adventure!
Most Inspirational Moment
Standing at the top of Lasermo La, surrounded by Himalayan peaks, I felt both humbled and exhilarated - proof that my first high-altitude trek was not only possible, but unforgettable. That moment of achievement, with the wind rushing past and the mountains stretching forever, will stay with me always.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Valerie was absolutely outstanding - her knowledge, passion, and calm leadership made the trek feel seamless and so special. She always had incredible stories to share, and her genuine care for the group turned this into more than just a hike; it became an unforgettable adventure.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Come with an open mind and a sense of adventure - the Nubra Valley trek is as much about connecting with the culture and people as it is about the mountains. Be prepared for high altitude, trust the crew (they’re amazing!), and don’t forget to slow down and enjoy every moment. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

An unforgettable adventure in Borneo
The highlights for me were seeing orangutans (including babies!) in the wild, plus the rare pygmy elephants, alongside so much other incredible wildlife. Our local leader and guides were outstanding – not only were they brilliant at spotting animals I never would have seen on my own, but they also shared fascinating insights into Borneo’s wildlife and culture, which really enriched the whole experience.
I loved the variety of activities too – from hiking through the rainforest to snorkelling in crystal-clear waters, spotting wildlife on boat trips, exploring charming towns, and relaxing on pristine white beaches. It truly offered a little bit of everything.
This trip was magical from start to finish, and the orangutans in particular were such a special sight. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for adventure, wildlife, and unforgettable memories.
Most Inspirational Moment
Spotting our first orangutan in the wild!
Thoughts on Group Leader
Our leader was incredible – not only amazing at spotting wildlife but also full of knowledge about the animals and Borneo’s local culture. Made the experience so much richer!
Advice for Potential Travellers
Top tip for Borneo: pack binoculars – and if you love photography, bring a long lens! The rainforest is full of wildlife, but some of it hides high up in the trees.

Thoughts on Group Leader
The tour leader for this group was amazing, he's been leading groups for the past ten years and can honestly say that he made us feel at home!
Advice for Potential Travellers
Pack light, you going to want to get souvenirs and hiking boots are essential as the terrain is very rocky and sometimes slippery.

Best trip with the Best Views!!
Great trip in the Dolomites region, this trip is a center based trip which worked out very well, one home base for the entire week. We started each morning on our hikes and saw some of the most specular views of the Dolomites.
Most Inspirational Moment
Seeing the Tre Cime/Drei Zinnen in person, our leader started our hike early in the morning to beat the crowds and we were very lucky to be the only people on the trail to take in these beautiful peaks.
Thoughts on Group Leader
We had Mark Brown, he was fantastic, he was very knowledgeable of the area and the Dolomites. He engaged with us at all times and shared meals and stories with us.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Make sure to bring good hiking boots, hiking poles they help so much on the descends. Make sure to bring enough water with you. Always carry waterproofs as rain can sneak up at any time.
