Overview

Hike through wildlife-rich mountains and discover the rural culture and history of Bulgaria

The Rodopi Mountains are a hauntingly beautiful and mysterious region which, according to legend, were the home of the ancient Greek bard, Orpheus. Today they offer a refuge for many rare plants, butterflies, birds and mammals, including elusive carnivores such as brown bears and wolves. Discover the rich cultural and natural heritage of this remote mountain range as we walk through a variety of landscapes, including shady coniferous forests, expansive meadows and rugged limestone gorges. We engage with local people who maintain their traditional rural existence, working the fields by hand and tending their livestock on the meadows and pastures.

Our first day in the mountains provides us with two separate walks, each offering a unique set of landscapes and wildlife-spotting opportunities. A 20-minute drive after breakfast brings us to the trailhead of our first walk, a hike through the deep gorge and forests of Kastrakli Nature Reserve, renowned for orchids, butterflies and a well-established population of Balkan chamois.

In the afternoon, after a 30-minute drive to the village of Chala, we set off for our second walk. To start, we follow a broad grassy ridge spur, offering spectacular views towards Yagodina, before dropping steeply into Buynovo Gorge, where the bus will be waiting to drive us (10 minutes) back to the hotel.

Hike Bulgaria’s Rodopi Mountains

A 30-minute drive up the picturesque valley of the Buynovska Reka brings us to the village of Buynovo, where we start our walk. Today, we wander amid the mountain meadows and forests along the border with Greece. Nowadays this is a tranquil region, peacefully roamed by wolves, bear, wild boar and red deer, and home to secretive forest birds such as capercaillie and hazel grouse; however, during the Cold War, it was known as the Zone of Death, a forbidden area patrolled by armed border guards ordered to prevent anyone trying to escape across the Iron Curtain into Greece.

During our walk, we see remnants of the old border fence and perhaps find traces of former military bunkers, giving us an opportunity to learn more about this period of Bulgarian history.

Hike Bulgaria’s Rodopi Mountains

After breakfast, we set off in our bus for a 1hr 30min drive east into the highest part of the Rodopi Mountains. Having reached the end of the driveable road, we begin a wonderfully panoramic hike along the main ridge of the Rodopi Mountains. First, we skirt just below the military base on the summit of the Rodopi’s highest peak, Golyam Perelik (7,188ft/2,191m), before ascending Karlak (7,178ft/2,188m).

Having enjoyed the expansive views from the rolling open pastures, we then start to drop into the forest, making a long descent to the picturesquely situated village of Gela, which according to legend was the birthplace of Orpheus. Here, we meet our bus for the drive back to Yagodina.

Accommodation: Yagodina Family Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Embark on an exciting bear and wolf tracking walk, which starts and finishes at the door of our hotel. Spending the entire day on foot, we explore the diverse patchwork of landscapes that immediately surround Yagodina, a prime habitat for both brown bears and grey wolves.

During our explorations, we look out for signs of their presence and activities, while learning about their ecology and behaviour. We also gain an understanding of local conservation efforts and the challenges of human-carnivore existence.

  • Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Having visited the village of Gela earlier in the week, the supposed birthplace of Orpheus, we continue with the Orphic theme today, following in his footsteps to the site of an ancient Thracian sanctuary where Orpheus is believed to have met his death.

As well as being steeped in a fascinating mix of myth and mystery, today’s route also offers some lovely remote walking. We share our trail with wolves and deer, and can often hear the eerie cries of black woodpeckers echoing through the forest, adding to the excitement and magical atmosphere. The forests are also rich in other birdlife, including hazel grouse, nutcrackers, crossbills, and crested tits.

Hike Bulgaria’s Rodopi Mountains

Having had breakfast and said our farewells to the staff at the hotel, we set off on foot for a short but stunning final walk.

Begin by winding through the meadows at the edge of the village, before joining a narrow rocky trail, on which we eventually descend into the depths of the Buynovo Gorge. The first part of the path skirts the flank of imposing Mount Sveti Iliya, passing a cave and crossing scrubby scree slopes that are home to a growing population of Balkan chamois.

The views of the crags above, on which chamois make their home, and down into the gorge below, are breath-taking. However, please note the trail is very rough and rocky underfoot, and although not exposed, may not be suitable for those with serious vertigo.

Eventually, having entered the forest shade, we descend to the river. Here, we meet our bus and transfer (four hours) to Sofia. We expect to have a few hours free in Sofia before our farewell dinner together at the hotel restaurant.

Accommodation

Yagodina Family Hotel and Boutique Hotel Crystal Palace

Our base for six nights is Yagodina, a traditional rural village known for its self-sufficiency and hospitable inhabitants. Home to around 500 people, it is secluded in the Trigrad Karst region, one of the most remote parts of the Rodopi Mountains.

Here, we stay in the Yagodina Family Hotel, a small accommodation with comfortable twin and single rooms. It’s owned and run by a local family and most of the food (including milk, cheese, butter, jam and honey) is either home-produced or locally sourced. Please note that.

Our final night is at Boutique Hotel Crystal Palace, a conveniently located four-star hotel in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. The 63-room accommodation is in the downtown area, close to city landmarks, including the Alexander Nevski Cathedral. It also has a restaurant serving French, Italian and Spanish dishes, plus a lobby bar with cocktails, coffee and more.

Worth knowing

  • Not all rooms have balconies at Yagodina Family Hotel. Fittings, furnishings and facilities vary, so there is no guarantee your room will have a fridge, kettle, safe deposit box, or wifi signal. There is, however, good wifi in the hotel restaurant.

Essential Information

This trip is rated Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings, visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip, please contact us.

Itinerary: Hiking between four and five hours a day, along traditional mountain trails, forest tracks and ancient Roman roads, our varied programme of daily walks takes us through a mixture of silent forests and flower-filled meadows, as well as over rocky karst terrain.

Suitability: Although the pace is generally leisurely, allowing time to enjoy the scenery, observe wildlife, take photographs and interact with local people, the trip does involve moderately strenuous walking in mountainous terrain. Trails are rarely flat, and often rough and stony. To make the most of your experience, you should be prepared for steep ascents as we climb over ridges, and be confident in descending steep paths over stones and tree roots as we drop into deep valleys and gorges.

Day 4 hike: Occasionally, during May, late-lying snow makes it impossible to traverse the Perelik ridge. In this case, a replacement lower-altitude walk will be arranged in the mountains closer to Yagodina. This alternative walk will be a similar distance, and is wonderfully varied in its own right, leading through a succession of different wildlife habitats, and in places offering wonderfully expansive views.

Bulgaria

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Bulgaria. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

The restaurant at Yagodina Family Hotel is renowned throughout Bulgaria for serving delicious traditional home-cooked meals prepared from local produce. The cuisine reflects a mixture of Bulgarian, Greek, Turkish and Slavonic influences, with several local Rodopi specialties including smilyanski fasul (a delicious bean soup) and patatnik (grated potatoes, onions and cheese, seasoned with mint and other herbs).

Typical meals served during the week will comprise:

  • Breakfast: Usually includes herb tea and coffee, bread, jam, honey and cheese, supplemented in Yagodina by fresh home-made yoghurt and traditional local specialities, such as katmi (thick pancakes) and rodopski klin (a rice-based dish).
  • Lunch: Picnic lunches will be eaten in the mountains and typically comprise of bread, cheese, salami, salad, biscuits and fruit.
  • Dinner: Will be taken in our hotel restaurant, and will normally include three courses and likely to comprise a version of the traditional Bulgarian salad shopska salata (tomatoes, cucumber and white cheese) or a vegetarian soup, followed by a main course, and then to finish off, either fruit or one of the hotel owner’s highly popular home-made desserts! Jugs of tap water will be provided on the table with the evening meal. Bottled mineral water, soft drinks and alcohol are not included but can be purchased. There are also several local wines you may wish to try, including an excellent red Mavrud from vineyards on the northern slopes of the Rodopi.

As a small, family-run mountain hotel specialising in traditional Bulgarian cuisine, Yagodina Family Hotel cannot accommodate every dietary preference. Food allergies are taken seriously, and advance notice allows staff to adapt menus or advise on suitable dishes. Vegetarians will generally find good options, though variety may be limited seasonally. However, vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free alternatives are not available, so guests with these needs should plan accordingly.

Spring and summer days are typically warm and sunny, with a refreshing mountain breeze that helps moderate temperatures. However, please note that the weather in the mountains can be changeable, and cold temperatures may occur at any time. Occasionally, sudden short storms may arise, so it’s important to carry suitable waterproof clothing on all walks. However, such storms are usually followed by a period of settled weather.

Later in autumn, overnight frosts and misty mornings are common, but these often give way to beautiful, sunny days. It’s always a good idea to keep a pair of gloves and a spare warm layer in your pack for shadier paths or when picnicking on breezy rock outcrops.

Seasonal wildlife: During late spring and early summer, wildflowers in the Rodopi Mountains reach their peak, turning the meadows into a vibrant patchwork of colour. The edges of forest paths often harbour a variety of rare and beautiful orchids. As summer progresses, the variety of butterflies becomes particularly striking. Come autumn, the deciduous trees begin to change colour, and by October, the mountain landscapes are at their most photogenic, especially after a frosty night, when the golden morning sun appears.

This is also the time when the forests and scrubs are full of wild fruits and nuts, and the birds become more conspicuous again as they actively feed up before the winter. October is also a crucial foraging period for the brown bears as they prepare for hibernation. Additionally, many attractive fungi emerge on the forest floor, not only harvested by the locals, but also by roe deer, Balkan chamois, wild boar, red squirrels, and a variety of smaller rodents.

As a certified B Corp, we’re on a mission to improve our social and environmental impact across all our adventures.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony through practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.

Wildlife focused, relaxed hiking in the rural Rodopi mountain region with beautiful scenery.

I had a wonderful week in the rural wilderness of Rodopi. This was my first hiking trip and I found the walks to be very enjoyable and manageable. The pace was leisurely with lots of wildlife stops whilst still covering a good distance each day. The trip notes are very...

Most Inspirational Moment

I really enjoyed learning about all the ancient myths of the area, enjoying a totally secluded and quiet wilderness and tracking brown bears whilst learning so much about them.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Julian was brilliant, an extremely knowledgeable and passionate wildlife expert, and you could tell he genuinely loved his job. A great tour leader, always very organised and the trip ran very smoothly. Julian was also very funny and sociable and was very much a member of the group. I learnt so much from him about the Brown bears, wolves and all the species living in the Rodopi as well learning about the local culture and way of life, and Bulgaria's interesting history. His stories about local myths and legends were great and kept us all entertained especially during the more challenging walking days. He made sure the group stayed together during the hikes, and was very intuitive as to when anyone in the group needed a rest.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As all the food is local produce and made at the hotel, it's very important to give lots of notice if there is any dietary requirements such as vegan, gluten free etc. This can be catered for as long as they know in advance. The town is very small and rural so no option to buy food or snacks elsewhere. We enjoyed a 3 course meal included every night, home cooked at the hotel. As a vegetarian, I ate well every day, lots of beans, eggs, cheeses and fresh fruit and veg. The hotel made a different local Bulgarian breakfast delicacy every day and always had a selection of lunch items for us to make our own packed lunch. Lovely staff at the hotel. For the hiking, I'd strongly recommend getting some hill walking practice in, as we trekked in mountain region, the trails were almost never flat! Bring blister plasters, proper breathable hiking socks and break in your hiking boots in advance! Good ankle support boots were very much appreciated as the terrain is often rocky and uneven. Some items i included in my day back which came in handy were binoculars, a sun hat, extra blister plasters, a waterproof, some snack bars and a large water bottle. A lot of my group also had hiking polls which they found very useful, especially on the days with more descents.

Walking and wildlife in beautiful mountains

A very underrated trip with a real focus on wildlife, and there is lots to see. The walking is spot on for a moderate trip but there is time to stop and take photos and learn about the area and the wildlife. Trails are good and very quiet. It's definitely...

Most Inspirational Moment

So many moments combined, seeing storks and eagles soaring over the mountains at the same time! Walking through meadows and stopping to watch a fox that didn't care that we were there.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Julian was excellent, we were privileged to have a wildlife expert as a leader. It felt like we were getting much more out of the week than just a walk. His passion for the area shone through and his way with people made us into a very cohesive group. Days were full but never to long, no one rushed ahead and no one felt they were holding the group up. Everything ran smoothly, even with a few adaptations, and that doesn't happen by accident.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take binoculars, there is a lot to see. Take a sandwich box for lunch and a small knife and fork if you prefer salad to a sandwich (the regional specialities for breakfast are also great to take for lunch (this is allowed!)). You don't need to take extra food, there is plenty and it's delicious. Take waterproofs (if you do get rain it by no means detracts from the trip and you can easily dry anything that does get wet). Enjoy being in a group which enjoys walking and wildlife!

More than a trip.

This was a holiday: good food, good weather, relaxing hotel, nice hosts , great group, well organised. An exploration, fabulous unhurried but exhilarating walks, wonderful scenery and an education. Most Inspirational Moment

Delightful, caring, organised and knowledgeable

Advice for Potential Travellers

Explore the village of Yagodina in your free time. Take good waterproofs, if it rains it rains hard and fast.

Hiking in the Rodopi 2025

This was an excellent walking tour with, as described, moderate walking but with time to stop and enjoy the wildlife and great views. It was very well organised and the village hotel was a good choice for walkers with good rooms, excellent home made food and attentive staff.

Most Inspirational Moment

Watching eagles and woodpeckers while out walking.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Julian was absolutely outstanding - sensible, passionate, knowledgeable and clearly very experienced. He identified each member of the groups interests and then highlighted the relevant flora, fauna and birds as we walked. His 20+ years of experience showed and I would have no hesitation in joining another of his tours - or recommending him to others.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go while you still can - it seems Exodus has been reducing their Bulgarian tour options recently but this is well worth the experience.

Mountains and meadows, raptors and bears and legend.

Walking in the peace of thick pine forested mountains and grassy meadows, with cool crystal clear streams, but in the domain of wild brown bears and raptors. The legend of Orpheus never far away. Meticulously kept hotel, with good food.

Most Inspirational Moment

Finding clear sign of wild brown bears - scat, overturned stones and a bear paw print set INTO the tyre tread of a jeep - which had passed us on the forest track only five minutes previously! Seeing raptors flying, possibly peregrine or maybe a saker falcon.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Svetoslava was an excellent guide. She was organised and fully explained each day's activities including timings etc. She is also qualified in bear studies.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The hotel is meticulously kept by the family owners, who clearly take pride in their hotel. For example, every morning over an early coffee I saw even the patio being swept clean. Every day. The food is prepared with fresh produce and is very good. The bathroom is a wet room (without a separate shower enclosure) and there is a plastic bowel for washing shirt and smalls if you wish. (Take half a dozen pegs). The mountain tracks can be a little stony in places, a good boot with ankle support is useful on those days. There are some short but steep ascents to be prepared for, but the views are well worth it. The hotel's tap water is quite safe to drink and there are also mountain streams and these have a tap dispense in places for bottle re-filling, but in hot months one or two may be dry - the guide will inform you. Carrying two litres of water is sensible. Take a wetproof top though - just in case of rain even if it looks like it won't, and a plastic sealed container for the lunch sandwich. The trails were not heavily used and there was a sense of having the place to ourselves. The forest tracks open into wide meadows, here the air shimmers with the beating wings of butterflies. Look above for birds, buzzards and raptors were frequently seen. The wall creeper eluded us this time though. Snakes? Never saw any, as they was well gone, alerted by the vibration of our footfall, or else our scent. You are in the realm of wildlife. Chamois were seen as were the signs of wild boar. You are also in bear country. We saw bear droppings and overturned stones where they had been looking for food under. We saw a tree with bear fur trapped in the bark where they had rubbed their backs, and then the bear paw print noted above. It's important to remember though that there is little risk here. Svetoslava explained that any bear would have heard us through our normal walking noise or the inevitable chit-chat amongst the group and would have moved off, or like the snakes detected our smell with the same result. So although it is exciting to know these animals are present, it is equally reassuring to know there is little risk either. I carried a small pair of 8 x 32 binoculars. The border "dead zone" (in communist times) is an interesting day, perhaps take a torch that day to go into the interior troops' bunker, and there are also T72 or PT76 pits each with a concrete shelter for its crew to have a look at. Peace, quiet, thick forests, open meadows with beautiful vistas, cool crystal clear streams, beautiful butterflies and raptors. But it is the presence of the brown bears which sets this trip apart. Like Orpheus you will always want to look back, but in your case with a much happier outcome than his!

Stunning landscape, fascinating guide

An under-appreciated gem. The mountains are stunning, the walking is moderate and achievable in breathtaking scenery, and we saw very few other people on any of the walks. Lots of additional interest in terms of flora and fauna, and the tour guide (Svetla) was extremely knowledgeable on a wide range...

Everything that was promised by the trip notes and earlier reviews

A lovely week in an undisturbed mountain environment. We hardly saw anyone else on our walks, and Yagodina village is completely calm. It feels such a healthy week - unspoilt and wholesome.

Most Inspirational Moment

Probably when our tour leader confided that he is housing in his roof both a large colony of horseshoe bats AND stone martens (which I had never heard of before). Talk about walking the walk as a conservationist..

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. As a walking leader, Julian had put great thought into a lovely variety of walks; his relationship with the people in Yagodina and the hotel is deeply impressive and it felt as though we got special treatment because of him; and his knowledge of the wildlife is HUGE. An expert on bears, but so much more besides. And he is good company

Advice for Potential Travellers

Trip notes are very good, so nothing to add there. I thought that it was worth spending an extra day at the end to visit Sofia, especially as I was able to get a more convenient flight home that way
