Itinerary Expand all Lima hotel to Lima hotel Day 1 Start Lima; fly to Puerto Maldonado and transfer to Amazon Lodge in the Tambopata Reserve by boat. A car and a driver will collect you from your hotel early this morning and take you to Lima airport in time for the early morning flight to Puerto Maldonado. Puerto Maldonado is a small jungle town and you will be met by a guide at the airport, who will accompany you to the jungle lodge. The transfer is a short (45 minute) drive to the river, from where you continue by boat to the jungle lodge in the Tambopata Reserve (between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on which lodge you are staying in). On the way it is possible to see caiman, River turtles and a wide variety of bird life. A light lunch/snack is served on the boat. You will make a stop at the lodge's office in Puerto Maldonado town en route where you will be provided with a duffel bag and be asked to take only what you need with you, whilst your main luggage will be stored securely at the office during your stay in the rainforest. Accommodation: Amazon Rainforest Lodge Meals included: Lunch Dinner Days 2-3 Two days exploring the forest, rivers and lakes surrounding the lodge, on foot and in both motorised and paddle canoes in search of wildlife and birdlife. The next two days are spent exploring the forest, rivers and lakes surrounding the lodge, on foot and in both motorised and paddle canoes. Although a lot of the wildlife tends to hide in the dense foliage, we should expect to see a wide variety of birds, including herons and egrets, jacanas, macaws and the almost prehistoric-looking hoatzin, as well as several species of monkey, reptiles and insects, and with luck the giant otters which live in the rivers of the Amazon Basin. Accommodtion: Amazon Rainforest Lodge Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner Day 4 Fly back to Lima and transfer to your hotel. A dawn start is required for the boat transfer back to Puerto Maldonado (usually departing between 07:30 and 08:30), giving memorable views of the sunrise over the river. Look out for the early morning wildlife, which is particularly active at this time. Howler monkeys are frequently heard as they stake out their territories. You will go via the lodge's office in town to collect the rest of your luggage and then continue to Puerto Maldonado airport (usually arriving between 09:30 and 11:00 - depending on which lodge you have come from). The flights usually arrive back into Lima in the early afternoon and you will be transferred to your hotel. Accommodation: Hotel El Tambo I or II, Lima (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast Day 5 End Lima. The extension ends in Lima after breakfast today. A departure transfer from the Lima hotel to Lima airport is included provided you have supplied Exodus with your international flight details or have booked flights through Exodus. Meals included: Breakfast
Peru Visas are not required by UK citizens, Western European nationals, Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans and most other nationalities. If you are in any doubt please contact the nearest Peruvian Embassy.
Peru There are no mandatory vaccination requirements. Recommended vaccinations are: Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid, Hepatitis A. Zika fever is a mosquito‐borne viral disease and a known risk in places visited on this trip. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available, we therefore strongly recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites. If you are travelling to the Tambopata reserve in the Amazon rainforest, the risk of malaria is slight, but you may wish to consult your GP or travel health clinic for further advice. We also strongly recommend that you obtain a Yellow Fever vaccination. Dengue fever and/or Chikungunya are known risks in the Amazon region. Both are tropical viral diseases spread by daytime biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available for either, and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites: always apply insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers while in the rainforest to avoid being bitten.
Amazon Lodge 3 nights in an Amazon Lodge and 1 night in a hotel in Lima are included in this extension. Please note that the itinerary is reversed if booked before your main Exodus tour: for pre-tour extensions a hotel night in Lima is included at the start of the extension instead of at the end. In Lima we usually stay at Hotel El Tambo I or II, located within the Miraflores district of the city. Although we usually use Cayman Lodge, this is subject to availability and we work with a variety of lodges in the Tambopata Reserve within the Amazon. All offer a similar standard of accommodation and rainforest experience, and each has a network of walking trails through the forest. The lodges are between 1½ and 3½ hours by boat from Puerto Maldonado, and each has a main building surrounded by lodge/bungalow accommodation. The rooms are usually based on two people sharing, and all have private bathrooms with a shower as well as mosquito nets over the beds. Some lodges also have mosquito screens on the windows, but this will vary from lodge to lodge. There is usually no electricity in the bedrooms, and lighting is provided by lanterns or candles. The main buildings each have a dining room and bar, as well as a small selection of books relating to the rainforest and its flora and fauna. These are usually the only areas of the lodge with an electrical supply (not 24 hour). A compulsory single supplement or sole traveller supplement may be applicable.

Reviewed July 2019 Linda S. Trip: Amazon Rainforest Extension (from Lima) Amazing Amazon! I was a little undecided about booking this extension, I'm so glad I did. The trip was very well organised, and the excitement starts with the very first boat journey to your Lodge. Lots of new experiences and a sensory sensation!! What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? Travelling on the river in the dark, watching dawn break and hearing the jungle come alive. Night walk through the forest. The sheer enormity of the different sights, sounds, humidity and smell of the jungle. What did you think of your group leader? Moises was an excellent and very knowledgeable local guide. He saw and heard things way before we did, and made sure we kept safe whilst photographing some potentially dangerous animals and plants. Do you have any advice for potential travellers? Just do it. Completely different to other parts of the world, and changing rapidly. You may not get the chance again, and the memories will stay with you forever. Is there anything else you would like to add? Remember the Deet!!
