Explore the Roman ruins at Jerash • Amman city tour
We drive north to Jerash this morning, the largest Roman ruins in Jordan. Buried for centuries under blown sand, the ancient architecture here is remarkably well preserved and an exploration of the dramatic oval forum, colonnaded main streets, two theatres and impressive Temple of Zeus provides a fascinating insight into life in the ancient world.
After a good look around, we head back to Amman for a city tour, which takes in the hilltop ruins of the Citadel, a site occupied by various civilisations from the Bronze Age, plus the 6,000-seat Roman amphitheatre and the old city.

Drive down King's Highway to Petra via Mount Nebo, Madaba and Kerak
Today is a long driving day as we head down the King’s Highway, which takes us up and down huge wadis (valleys). However, we have several stops of interest en route including Madaba, where we visit St George’s Church to admire its mosaic floor, considered the oldest map of Palestine in existence.
We then make the short drive to Mount Nebo, where, from this 2,295ft (700m) high viewpoint overlooking the Dead Sea to Palestine and Israel beyond, Moses is said to have first seen the Promised Land. It’s then to the magnificent fortified town of Kerak, a Crusader stronghold dominated by a medieval castle.
Further south, we reach Petra, the premier historic site in Jordan and one of the most outstanding ancient cities in the world.

Days
4 - 5
Two days exploring Petra, including optional hikes
Enjoy two days exploring Petra, an ancient Nabatean city carved spectacularly into sandstone cliffs. Building started here in the third century BCE, but the Red Rose City was hidden for centuries until Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1812.
To enter, we walk down a narrow chasm known as the Siq. Dramatically unveiled at the end is El Khazneh (the Treasury), the first breathtaking sight of a remarkable day. Continuing to the city centre, we pass the houses and tombs of the rich citizens and the remarkable scale of the site begins to unveil itself. You can also take the optional walk up the 800 or so steps to El Deir (the Monastery), with its superb facade topped by a huge urn.
On the second day, your guide takes you into the site for either a hike up to the High Place of Sacrifice or for free time to explore the city further. Only a few people attempt to visit the High Place as it can be quite arduous and is not recommended for those who are unsure of their fitness or are uncomfortable with heights. However, those who do make it to the top are rewarded with wonderful views over parts of the site visited on the previous day.
On one of the evenings, you may also have the opportunity to dine at a family home in Wadi Musa, eating traditional Jordanian dishes that you wouldn’t typically find in restaurants. The host normally eats with the group, an excellent chance to gain firsthand insight into the local life and culture in an authentic setting.

Into the dramatic Wadi Rum desert • Traditional Bedouin dinner
This morning, we have the option to take a guided tour through Little Petra (extra cost, payable locally) or you can relax at our hotel before we join the modern Desert Highway and head south to Wadi Rum. The purpose of Little Petra is not clear; however, archaeologists believe it was probably a suburb of Petra where visiting traders on the Silk Road may have stayed.
It’s then to the UNESCO-listed Wadi Rum, where dramatic sandstone mountains rise from the sandy desert floor. It was here that Lawrence of Arabia and Prince Faisal assembled the Arab tribes for the attack on Aqaba in the First World War and where sections of the 1962 epic film were shot.
After we’ve checked into our private Exodus camp, our Bedouin hosts take us for an approximately two-hour 4×4 ride to explore the protected area. We visit the highlights, have time to sample Bedouin tea, and then watch the sunset from the vantage point of a rock formation. We then return to our camp, where we enjoy Bedouin hospitality with a traditional zarb dinner, which is cooked underground. After, we learn about Bedouin culture through interacting with the family who run the camp.
Morning in Wadi Rum • To Aqaba • Relax by the Red Sea • City highlights tour
Wake in dramatic desert scenery and then head to Aqaba, a port and resort by the Red Sea, best known for having beautiful coral reefs. Upon arrival, we sink into the sands of Baranice Beach with three to four hours to relax and enjoy the sea before hotel check in.
Around 4pm-5pm, we join the tour leader for a walking tour of the old market, continuing to Aqaba Castle for a guided tour to uncover its historical significance and role in the Arab Revolt.
We learn more about the Arab Revolt at the neighbouring Bait Al Sharif Hussein bin Ali Museum, before an optional dinner at Dar Ne’meh, a community initiative empowering local women by providing training and helping them to build their own businesses.
After dinner and free time, we can either walk or drive back to the hotel.

Drive from Aqaba to the Dead Sea with optional trip to see Bethany Beyond the Jordan
Leaving the Red Sea, we transfer (4hr 30min) to the Dead Sea, where salt levels of around 34 percent keep you effortlessly afloat. There’s plenty of free time to experience this extraordinary phenomenon and to cover yourself with the Dead Sea mud, which is said to have healing powers, before cooling off in the swimming pool.
There’s also the chance to visit Bethany Beyond the Jordan, said to be the site of Jesus Christ’s baptism by John the Baptist, a moment marking the new era of Christianity. This is an optional trip that can be booked and paid for locally. It’s about a 15-minute drive from the Dead Sea hotel and the entire visit usually lasts 1hr 45min, including the drive to/from the hotel. Those who do not wish to visit the site will check into the hotel.
This evening, we have a group dinner to celebrate our time in Jordan and say our farewells.

Essential Info
Is this trip for you?
This trip is rated Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.
Although this is a cultural trip, some days (such as those in Petra) can be long and tiring. To do the optional 800 or so steps up to the Monastery or the climb to the High Place of Sacrifice, you should have a reasonable level of fitness. Your leader can provide further advice about these hikes. It is not advisable to visit the High Place of Sacrifice if you suffer from vertigo, as there are some very steep, narrow steps and cliffs. The leader will show where the route to the High Place of Sacrifice starts but does not accompany people wishing to take this route.
Wadi Rum camping: Although the campsite has plumbed toilets and showers, they are basic and hot water may be limited. Our private Exodus camp is, however, often a highlight for guests.
Petra accommodation: Demand for rooms near Petra is extremely high. Over the years, we have built relationships with several accommodations, which allows us to secure spots even during peak season. The limited amount of accommodation and high demand can result in varying quality in both the accommodation and service. However, we stay at these hotels as they are well-located for our trip to Petra.
Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility. However if you are a regular traveller on such trips, please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition.

Vaccinations and Health
Jordan
There are no required vaccinations. However, you may want to consider vaccinations for tetanus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rabies and typhoid. Please confirm all requirements with your doctor or travel clinic.
Passport
Jordan passport information
It is essential that we have your full passport details at least two weeks before the start of your trip (or at the time of booking for late bookings). This is required for the free visa (see below for eligibility details) and additionally, has to be supplied in advance to the tourism police, hotels and sights we’ll be visiting. If we are not provided with accurate passport information in advance, problems may be encountered during the trip and you may incur extra costs.
Visa
Jordan
Visas are required by most nationalities and can be obtained at the border or Amman airport.
We will arrange a free visa (usually 40 Jordanian dinars) for travellers booking a tour and any pre-tour arrangements through us, provided we receive full passport and flight details at least two weeks before arrival.
You will need to pay for the visa if we do not have these details two weeks before arrival or you are making your own pre-tour arrangements (ie extra nights before the tour that are not booked through Exodus).
Our airport representative will meet and assist you with obtaining the free visa on arrival in Jordan at Customs & Immigration. They will be carrying an Exodus sign.
Food & Drink
All breakfasts and two dinners are included on this trip.
When not half board, we usually eat in local restaurants and the leader arranges bookings for those in the group who would like to join. We suggest you budget around 20 Jordanian dinars (US$28) per person per non-included meals. If you are vegetarian, please note that main meals are limited in choice; however, meze is almost always available in restaurants and is a good, filling vegetarian choice. There is a good choice of seafood available when at the Red Sea. At the Wadi Rum camp, we enjoy a traditional dinner called zarb, which is cooked underground. This consists of rice with a selection including chicken, lamb and vegetables. Vegetables are cooked separately from the meat.
Alcoholic drinks: Alcohol is available in Jordan, but not widely. Many hotels do not sell alcohol but often allow it to be brought in from elsewhere. It is best to plan if you’ll want a drink, your tour leader can tell you what’s possible and may be able to arrange a stop at a supermarket or liquor store (depending on location). In Petra, the unique Cave Bar in Petra Guesthouse is open to the public. A less expensive option is the bar in the Petra Palace Hotel, which is also open to all.
Weather
October to November and March to April are very popular in Jordan as it is cooler, around 24C (75F) in the day and down to 8C (46F) at night. Rain is more likely, but protracted bad weather is unlikely. It is hot and dry, but not unpleasant, throughout Jordan in the summer. Daytime maximum temperatures are around 32C (89F) in Amman. Jerash temperatures are the same.
Wadi Rum is around 30C (86F) on average in summer, though it can get as high as 40C (104F). It is usually cooler (30C/86F) at night. In winter, it is much cooler and can get as low as 10C (50C) during the day. In the evening, it can hit freezing point. There are occasions when there is rain or even snow in the desert. If weather conditions require, we may need to modify the itinerary or the camp location for your comfort and safety.
Aqaba is very hot when the air is still, but there is usually a breeze. Rain is unusual but possible.
The Dead Sea air temperatures vary from around 14C (57F) in winter up to 37C (98F) in summer. The water temperature doesn’t drop below 20C (68F).
As with many countries in the world, seasons can go on longer than usual so it is advisable to always check the weather of the country you are travelling to a week or two before your trip so you can pack appropriately.
Hotels and a private Bedouin camp
On this Jordan adventure, we stay in a range of accommodations: a three-star hotel in downtown Amman, a modest but well-located hotel in Petra, and an unforgettable stay in a simple Bedouin camp in the desert. We end in style, relaxing in a five-star hotel by the Dead Sea. Below are the accommodations typically used on this trip.
Upgrade to a sea-view room overlooking the Dead Sea on Day 8 of the itinerary – speak to your sales representative for more details.
Amman: Hotel Khan Khediwe (nights 1 & 2)
In Amman, we usually stay at Khan Khediwe, a three-star hotel in the bustle of downtown Amman. It’s ideally placed for our adventures, close to a market and within walking distance of the Roman amphitheatre and shopping areas.
Petra: Hotel in Wadi Musa (nights 3-5)
We spend three nights in Wadi Musa, the town adjacent to Petra. Demand for rooms near Petra is very high; over the years, we have built relationships with several accommodations, which allows us to secure spots even during peak season. The hotels are modest but well located. Some are within walking distance of the main entrance to the Red Rose City, others are no more than a 10-minute transfer away. Places we stay include Edom Hotel, Petra Plaza, Petra Palace, Amra Palace and La Maison among others.
Wadi Rum: Exodus Private Camp (night 6)
Used exclusively by our groups, this permanent Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum is a highlight for many travellers. We sleep in simple, traditional tents sheltered by rugged stone cliffs and enjoy the warm hospitality of our Bedouin hosts. In the evening, they serve us a zarb dinner, cooked underground in the traditional manner, while the rest of the night is typically spent around the campfire, chatting and sharing an unforgettable experience.
Aqaba: Lacosta Hotel (night 7)
In the heart of modern Aqaba, the four-star Lacosta Hotel is within easy reach of shops, restaurants and the Red Sea. The rooms come with furniture and beds from the Middle East, while the hotel also has a gym and restaurant.
Dead Sea: Holiday Inn Dead Sea (night 8)
A standout stay for many is the Holiday Inn at the Dead Sea. Checking into this five-star property allows us to kick back and relax, perhaps in one of the many pools or with a float in the salty Dead Sea waters from the private beach. There’s also a free-to-use gym and a selection of excellent restaurants and bars.
Worth knowing
Demand for accommodation in Wadi Musa (Petra) is high; this can create problems with hot water and plumbing. In general, the accommodation is more basic compared to the rest of Jordan.
Single supplements are available for this trip but are not applicable at Wadi Rum.
If you are looking for a higher standard of accommodation, you may be interested in our Kingdoms of Jordan Premium Adventure, which follows a similar itinerary and stays at premium accommodation.
Private Family tour Week in Jordon 20th-28th Sept.2025
We had the most incredible private family tour in Jordan from 20th – 28th September 2025 with a group of 12, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Everything was exceptionally well organized, and the whole journey flowed smoothly from start to finish.
Our host Abdullah was outstanding — warm, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable. He was with us every step of the way, always making sure we were comfortable, while also giving us plenty of free time to explore and enjoy things at our own pace. That balance made the trip feel relaxed yet rich with experiences. Traveling with 12 family members could have been complicated, but with Abdullah, it was effortless.
The hotels were first-class throughout — clean, modern, and very comfortable. Each one felt like the perfect place to recharge after an adventurous day.
The itinerary was perfectly paced and covered the very best of Jordan:
Amman – We started in the capital, exploring its history, culture, and vibrant city life.
Jerash – The ancient Roman ruins were breathtaking and gave us a real sense of Jordan’s heritage.
Madaba & Mount Nebo – The mosaics and biblical history were fascinating, and the views were unforgettable.
Petra – Truly the highlight of the trip! Walking through the Siq and seeing the Treasury for the first time was magical. Exploring the vast site at our own pace made it even more special.
Wadi Rum – The desert landscapes were surreal. Our jeep tour and time under the stars in the desert were unforgettable family moments.
Aqaba – We enjoyed time by the Red Sea, relaxing and soaking up the sunshine.
The Dead Sea – Floating in the salt water was an incredible experience and the perfect way to unwind at the end of the trip.
Every stop was memorable, and having Abdullah to guide us with insight and care made it all the more meaningful.
Jordan is a spectacular country, but what made this trip truly exceptional was the personal touch, flexibility, and hospitality we experienced. It felt like so much more than just a tour — it was a family adventure filled with warmth, learning, and unforgettable memories.

Jordan in a week
The trip started out as a bit of a disaster as Royal Jordanian airways had to divert to Cairo, due to the current situation between Israel and Iran. That couldn’t be helped . Upon arrival in Amman 12 later, we were met by an Exodus rep.
Because time had been lost there was a lot of catching up to be done.
Out tour guide Mikhled had made some very sensible decisions , and although it had been a very long 36hours, from leaving home, we went straight to some of the most wonderful sights as soon as we got to the hotel.
So in fact, we didn’t miss out on anything because of the diversion.
The hotels were clean, friendly and catered for all our needs. They were centrally located too.
The distance between some locations was a lot, but the coaches were air conditioned and lots of stops on the journeys.
There was only 8people on the trip, and it was great, as everyone got along really well.
Evening meals were not included, however Mikhled, gave us lots of options . being a vegetarian was a bit hit and miss at times, but the starters made up for the main meal. Mikhled took us to some family homes for dinner, and that was very special.
Petra , the main attraction was very quiet due to the “Middle East” situation, which made it all the more enjoyable . It was very hot, so not being busy was ideal. Lots of free time on both days there . Mikhled never rushed us.
The Dead Sea wa amazing, if not a little weird. It certainly needed to be done. A half day of relaxing at The Red Sea was welcomed.
The holiday Inn was amazing, I had the luxury of a “Sea View” room, which was amazing .
Bethany beyond The Jordan was very special to me, however slightly marred by the Military , carrying firearms in such a holy place.
Understandably, as Israel was a stones throw away, but it did ruin it for me.

Interesting and enjoyable
A highlight tour of some of Jordan’s best sites and an insight into Jordanian life. This was my first trip to a proper “middle eastern” country which is a part of the world we hear much about, some people say it’s this or it’s that, but to actually see it and experience it yourself is so enlightening. Jordan was great, as I mention later, it is safe and welcoming for us visitors. I never saw or had even a slight inkling of something untoward happening.
This trip obviously involves a fair bit of travelling around from one location to another. Our bus/coach was very good, high quality, comfortable with good aircon! We were a group of 16 in what much have been around a 50 seat coach, so there was plenty of space for everyone which made travel comfortable. I appeciated that.
The itinery is good for a one week trip, everywhere we went was worthwhile. Our guide Mikhled managed our time at each location well and I never felt rushed. We have plenty of time at Petra which may be the main attraction for many people visiting Jordan. It got very hot here and you cover a surprsing amound of ground walking around what is a very large site. While I agree with Exodus’s assessment that overall this is an Easy/Moderate activity level trip. The first day at Petra can perhaps push the boundaries of that for some people. Mikhled gave us a great tour of the main parts of Petra and at the conclusion of this told us we had free time to explore by ourselves and we would meet back at the hotel at a given time. The hotel was very conveniently close to the main entrance, a few hundred metres. Mikhled often gave a guided tour of a location and then allowed us free time afterwards. That was good.
Most dinners (Tea! I’m a northerner) are not included in this trip. Most evenings our guide Mikhled offered the group the option of joining him to dine at a local restaurant. There was no compulsion to do this, you are free to do your own thing but most of the time the group dined together. I liked the food in Jordan. Herbed and spiced chicken, lamb and beef featured heavily but not hot spices. We were treated to some Jordanian specialities like “Upside down”. As Exodus mention, seafood is the main fare in Aqaba on the Red Sea but there are plenty of other choices if that’s not your thing. Exodus also mention the famous “Zarb” at the Wadi Rum desert camp. This was indeed excellent and probably my single favourite meal of the trip.
The trip comes to a relaxing end at the Holiday Inn Dead Sea resort. Nice hotel, unlike any Holiday Inn I’ve stayed at before. There’s an optional trip to Bethany Beyand the Jordan. I’m not religious but still went there. There is still some history to see and an interesting border between Jordan and Israel down the middle of the River Jordan. Floating in the Dead Sea was a one of those experiences you’ve got to tick off. It was a good and slightly strange experience, the water is weird!

Probably seeing "The Treasury" at Petra with my own eyes after seeing so many photos over the years on the internet etc. A famous part of world history and impressive sight in it's own right.
I also enjoyed the beauty and serenity of Wadi Rum in the evening at sunset.

Mikhled. Mikhled is an excellent guide in every aspect. Knowledge, organisation, humour, patience he has all the ideal qualities. It was a pleasure to be guided around Jordan and be educated about life in Jordan by Mikhled. We were in good hands.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Go Now! Despite the ongoing events in Gaza (at the time of writing in June 25) this is going on a long way from Jordan and has no direct impact upon Jordan, especially from a tourists perspective. Unfortunately it has had an impact upon toursim and visitors are staying away. This is however to our advantage because otherwise potentially busy sites like Petra are far less crowded than they could be, which made our visits better all round. I found Jordan to be perfectly safe and with very welcoming pleasant people. A few times, while on the coach, we'd be driving slowly through part of a town and young children would wave at us. It just made me smile.
Other stuff... every hotel we stayed in had either "British" plug sockets or multi sockets that accepted a British/Euro/US plug without an adapter. The Wadi Rum desert camp tent had a Euro/US socket.
My departure was 17th May. I did not see a single mosquito anywhere. I didn't actually see many insects at all during my visit. Apart from flies at Petra that were drawn to the horses used for rides from/to the main entrance.
In the second half of May temperatures were already peaking at 40C in open places like Jerash and Petra. Good luck in high summer! Wadi Rum desert camp was not cold, about 18C at dawn but I believe it can go a lot lower.
At our first briefing Mikhled assured me it was ok to wear shorts anywhere we were going in Jordan... and it was! I even saw some young women wearing well above the knee shorts and they didn't seem to be getting any grief about it.
Bartering over the price of certain things is common practice in Jodan. As a Briton I am generally useless at this. Embrace it or just accept that traders may do well out of you.
Even the nice coach we travelled around Jordan in had WiFi as did every hotel. No digital detox! No WiFi at Wadi Rum desert camp though but some did get a patchy network data connection.
Payment by card was almost always an option in most establishments, hotels and restaurants but I got the feeling that cash still comes first in Jordan. Obtaining Jordanian Dinars from ATMs or exchange kiosks was not a problem.
I had an extra day at the Holiday Inn Dead Sea resort at the end of the trip because of my flight arrangements. This turned out to be a small bonus and allowed some of us to see a little more in the area and of course a morning dip in the dead sea. Maybe you'd like to consider and extra day. Consideration of an extra day at the start of the trip might not be a bad thing either. Due to Royal Jordanian's flight schedules from the UK we didn't arrive at the hotel in Amman until something like 2am and were up only a few hours later for our morning trip to Jerash. Not unbearable but a quicker turnaround than ideal.

Food For Thought
Friends were apprehensive about me going to Jordan but it felt one of the safest places I’ve ever been. We saw no evidence of the conflict in the Middle East! We were also in Petra during the recent flash floods, we were well informed about the history of them, the forecast for that day and what would happen in the event of one. It was our free day there, I and several of the group walked out during the flood, whereas some were transported out. No panic, no mass evacuation, calmly organised with expert people and specialised vehicles on hand but not needed. Don’t have any doubts about going, just go!
We were met at Amman by an Exodus rep who was so well organised. Kept us together, organised our visas and whisked us past long queues and onto our coach within a few minutes. He also saw us off on departure day and waited till we were all ready to go through the security checks. (Unfortunately I can’t remember his name)
The people of Jordan are wonderful. You do get people trying to sell to you but they do take No as an answer and leave you alone. The youth of Jordan are so polite and offered me help wherever I was.
We had a very comfortable 32 seater coach for the 16 of us, very roomy, air conditioned and had Wi-Fi. Wahim, the driver was excellent, safe, confident, coach was always cleaned and he was dressed immaculatly every day of the tour.

Our guide Amer was excellent, well liked by the group, everywhere we went he knew someone and they greeted him warmly. His English was amazing and he could talk about anything from the top topics to British humour and banter. His talks were interesting, informative and often gave 'food for thought'. On visiting sites he always kep us together at first to show us and talk about the most interesting parts and then give us ample time on our own to explore, take photos or simply relax. He was always very organised, arriving and checking out at hotels was a breeze as he did everything for us. He also had the coach stop at supermarkets before some of the destinations so we could buy drinks and snacks a lot cheaper than the 'tourist prices'. Most of the nights we had our own options for dinner but I followed his advice and I really enjoyed all my meals. Amer always had time for the group, even in his own free time and we had plenty of laughs with him!
Advice for Potential Travellers
Go with an open mind, the history of Jordan may not be the same as we've been led to believe.
Water shoes are a must for Aqaba and the Dead Sea, stones and very hot Dead Sea sandbags around the mud bath. Towels are provided freely at both.
Any photographers-- wide angle lenses are best, zoom lenses not needed.
Plugs- varied in hotels, some 2 pin, some 3 pin- same as UK. I used a multi plug and an extension lead.
Give Exodus your passport details before you go to get your free Visa. We were whisked straight past the long queue obtaining and paying for visas.
Arrive in Amman a day early if possible. I didn't and regretted it as flights arrive in the early hours of the morning. Others did, they had more time to explore Amman and relax prior to the tour starting.
Take enough clothes to last the whole tour.

Jordan in a week
A wonderful week in Jordan. I would highly recommend this trip. Despite what is going on in other Middle Eastern countries, Jordan felt safe and it was clear that Jordan was struggling with a lack of tourists. The trip took us to such varied places in Jordan itself and I really enjoyed the mix. The group got on well and for anyone who is younger reading this – not everyone in an Exodus trip is over 60.
Most Inspirational Moment
Petra. For me it was going into Petra alone on the second day when it opened. It was so quiet. There were some people on the walk to the Treasury but after that they disappeared. For the walk up to the Monastery I saw no one. Not even any locals or animals. I would definitely recommend doing the walk to the Monastery early in the morning when it's quiet. It felt surreal because it was like I had the place to myself. It's not something I expected and I just tried to take it all in and enjoy the experience.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Mikhled was fantastic. He was knowledgeable, calm and always willing to help and make things work for everyone. He organised the option of group dinners every night with the aim of trying a different Jordanian dish for those who wanted to go along which most of us did. He worked around people's choices so that we could fit in the optional activities for those who wanted to do them. He had a lot of patience for all the questions that we asked and the general stuff that comes with having a group of people to organise.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Water shoes help when at the beach in Aqaba and also at the Dead Sea.
Loose long sleeved shirts and trousers means you don't stand out and I found actually kept me cooler than I thought.
Definitely take a sun hat of some form.
The family dinner option in Wadi Musa is worth it.
Go a day earlier and explore a bit of Amman and adjust to the time zone as otherwise you'll find yourself arriving in the early hours of the morning for the trip to start only a few hours later.
If you're in Amman on your own before or after the trip, Uber works and is cheap.
Go into Petra early on the second day.
Have some Jordanian diner as most optional activities had to be paid in cash - I changed mine in the UK - but nearly all restaurants took card.
Laundry was only really an option in the hotels so take enough outfits for the week otherwise you're washing in the sink or paying hotel prices.
I had read that the mud at the Dead Sea would stain my swimming costume. It didn't. I'd also read that the sand in Wadi Rum would stain my shoes. It didn't.

Jordan was nothing sort of spectacular, offering a balance between culture, history, religion and leisure. It certainly is a trip that has to be done at least once in your life.

Walking the siq in Petra and finally having the Treasury come into view. Truly magical and pictures does not do it any justice.

Fabulous
Visiting Jordan, especially Petra has been on my bucket list for some time. What an amazing country which didn’t disappoint. This started from the earliest moments of flying out there and speaking to Jordanians on the flight I was touched and humbled by their kindness and friendliness. It was my first organised trip and I was somewhat anxious about what to expect, but the people in my group were super. I havent laughed so much in such a long time. It is a full on itinerary but we were looked after so well and given many opportunities to really embrace the authenticity of the country, from visiting the stunning historical sites to walking through the city streets at night and soaking up the spices and culture of the many markets. We had a very comfortable coach with plenty of space for us all and a very safe and careful driver. It was one of the best holidays I have ever had and I am so glad and grateful to have had this wonderful opportunity.
Most Inspirational Moment
There were many! Petra of course is stunning, from the Treasury to the Monastery and Altar of High Sacrifice as well as walking of the main routes to capture different views, and enjoy tea with the local Bedouins. Mount Nebo. Watching the shooting stars in the clear night sky Wadi Rum was pretty special too. Walking through the local streets at night and experience the local culture and food. Visiting the mosque (in my free time) in Aqaba. Finally Bethany was a particular highlight and was peaceful and moving.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Mikhled was our group leader who worked so hard to keep us all happy and somehow found the energy and time to look after all our individual needs. He has the patience of a saint and worked tirelessly to make sure we had every opportunity to enjoy the authenticity of Jordan. Clearly very knowledgeable, kind, considerate, passionate and committed to his job and country .
Advice for Potential Travellers
Dont hesitate. I felt very safe and looked after. Jordanians are very peaceful and gentle. This was such an incredible experience that will stay with me forever, made even better by the stunning country, local people, history, sites, wonderful personalities in my group and group leader - I cant wait to return some day.

An absolutely breathtaking and fantastic trip
This trip was everything I hoped it would be and had been on my bucket list for some time. And it is almost impossible to put into words.
I have been lucky enough to travel with Exodus on numerous occasions, and this trip is one of the best I have ever been on. I was lucky enough to be with a wonderful group of people as well.
The itinerary is perfectly thought through – from the historical sights of Amman and Jerash to the walking at Petra to the occasions to relax (especially at the Red Sea and the Dead Sea.)
Jordan is a stunning country; rich in culture and history with extraordinary landscapes. From the grandeur of Petra to the serenity of the Wadi Rum to the relaxation of the Dead Sea. Jordan really is the total package.
The people of Jordan are amongst the friendliest in the world, and need us as tourists right now. If you are wondering whether it is safe – IT IS!
The transport used was very comfortable with WiFi, charging points and air conditioning on the coach. (Our driver was also great – felt very safe with him at the wheel.)
Most Inspirational Moment
I have two, and I cannot decide which one should be most inspiring!
1) Petra was everything I had imagined, and the "reveal" of The Treasury as you walked down towards it was breathtaking.
2) The night in the Wadi Rum was perfectly serene - from watching the sunset, to star gazing to seeing the sun rise was just magical.
Thoughts on Group Leader
I was very lucky to have had Mikhled as my Tour Leader for this trip.
Mikhled is a wonderful leader. We could not have asked for a better or more knowledgeable Tour Leader. He shared his knowledge and love for his country with passion together with a sense of fun. He guided us with sensitivity, kindness and with the patience of a saint.
Exodus are truly lucky to have him as a Tour Leader, and as a proud Jordanian he is a true representative for his wonderful country of Jordan.
He went above and beyond on several occasions including sharing some wonderful historical photos of Amman, Jerash and Petra after we had visited them - a real insight.
Advice for Potential Travellers
GO! Jordan is totally safe, in fact I felt safer in Jordan than I do in London. The people of Jordan need our support as tourists.
Hope that Mikhled is your tour leader.
Be prepared for large meals - the Jordanians like to feed people!
Take loose comfortable clothing.
Take some cat treats - there are dozens of friendly cats.
Mind the salt in your eyes in the Dead Sea.

Incredible week!
This has been on my bucket list for some time and it did not disappoint. The variety of each day made it feel like so much more than just a week. Petra was even better than I imagined but every location held its magic. Ayyad our guide was superb and so knowledgeable about his country and its history and went above and beyond to give us a memorable trip. Despite all the troubles in neighbouring countries, I never once felt unsafe and in fact with so few tourists, the Jordanians need our support with tourist areas being so quiet (though great as nowhere was crowded and the people are just lovely – everyone was so welcoming wherever we went) It was lovely to end the week at the dead sea and being able to use the lovely facilities at the hotel. After such a busy week, getting a few hours by one of the pools was much needed as well as a float in the famous dead sea.
Most Inspirational Moment
2 winners for me; Petra at night - to see the treasury lit up at night and to walk down the gorge lit by lanterns was simply magical against the beautiful night sky. Also camping in the bedouin camp. This was also truly magical; sleeping under the incredible night sky, sitting around the campfire then watching shooting stars until we could no longer keep our eyes open - I will never forget this night!
Thoughts on Group Leader
Ayyad was brilliant - great sense of humour and always looking for the best experiences for us such as joining us to climb to the high place of sacrifice in Petra but then showing us an alternative longer route down. He clearly loves his country and did his best to teach us about his culture and language which all went towards making the trip even more special. As a vegetarian, he was great at always ensuring that I was catered for when we had our evening meals and did a good job of organising a group meal almost every night.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Just do it! Be prepared for lots of walking, especially on the days visiting Petra and for varying temperatures eg Aqaba typically much hotter than Amman. Wearing loose clothing covering knees shoulders (for women) was actually great at keeping cool. As a vegetarian, main meals were scarce but there was always something to eat, usually mezze style dishes - just be prepared for limited choice. Don't take your best swimwear to the dead sea - the mud might not come out afterwards..!! Walking sandals are fine for most days but walking shoes at least for Petra as it's difficult underfoot at times. Do Petra by night - don't expect much and you might be surprised! It was a highlight for me. If you have room, take your own snorkel to save renting them in Aqaba and if you're a cat lover, some cat treats will be very much welcomed by the Jordanian cats..! I was very popular..! Cash was needed for the optional trips but I mainly used cards in shops and at restaurants - they were accepted widely. Finally no need to take towels and all hotels had hairdryers!

Would never book with Exodus again
Appalling customer service from Exodus on return from my trip. A 5* resort billed as a “standout for many” by Exodus (Holiday Inn Dead Sea) failed to provide functioning air conditioning & was dishonest about it. Despite back and forth for several months, Exodus failed to investigate my complaint claiming they were unable to get a response from a supplier they continue to use and whilst acknowledging my experience was unacceptable, “reassured” (!)me my experience was a “one off”.
Most Inspirational Moment
Petra by night.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Fantastic. Unfortunately this cannot make up for the extremely negative experience I had with a supplier Exodus continues to do business with yet claims it is unable to obtain an explanation from.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Go to Jordan! But don't book with Exodus. I have friends who have traveled to Jordan with competitor companies and have thankfully not had the woeful and distressing experience I had with Exodus.
Reply from Exodus
We would like to thank you for your review, Sarah, and were pleased to read that you generally enjoyed visiting Jordan and were impressed with your Exodus tour leader. On the other hand, we were incredibly regretful to learn about your disappointing stay at the Holiday Inn Dead Sea. We have a well established complaints process, which has been tried and tested over many years, and we are confident, having discussed this with our customer services team, that they have addressed your concerns in an appropriate manner. We, nevertheless, remain apologetic that the end of your holiday was not as positive as you or we had anticipated.
