Japan in depth

A holiday to Japan is incomplete without taking the time to savour the country's cuisine – seafood lovers will adore the fresh flavours of sushi, and who could resist the perfect bowl of udon or soba noodles after a long day exploring? And with the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world, it's no wonder tours to Japan often focus on the food, but there's the drink to consider too - from the highly nuanced and ritualistic tea ceremonies to sipping traditional, warming sake.

The country has four distinct seasons, each with its own appeal, and when planning trips to Japan it's best to pick the one that excites you best. You could go in spring, when one of nature's greatest phenomenon is happening. The sakura, or cherry blossom, is spectacular, and many holidays are timed to celebrate the beautiful blush of delicate pink blossom that coats the country. In summer, the Japanese Alps are at their best and walkers can head out on two feet to follow ancient trails rich with history. Less well-known is the autumnal koyo, or autumn leaves – a stupendous burst of colour across the forests. Japan trips timed to catch these colourful displays are guaranteed to make you reach for your camera, to capture the memories forever.
