The ancient city of Athens – capital of Greece – is known as the birthplace of modern civilisation, at once the historical capital of Europe and the birthplace of democracy. Shrouded in myth and mystery, the ruined ancient world is all around you here. Rising high above the city is the Acropolis, with its famed Parthenon and temples, where, according to legend, Athena and Poseidon held a contest to see who would possess control of Athens. Poseidon created a saltwater spring by throwing down his trident; Athena created an olive tree.

Recently, the city has been infused with new life and a vibrant arts hub has sprung up in the shadow of the Acropolis. Filled with galleries, cafés, hip shops and start-ups, Kerameikos-Metaxourgeio is well worth exploring if you get the chance.
