We hop on the bikes for a short ride, crossing the river by local ferry boat, and then ride through the villages on an island in the Mekong River. The island is famous for silk weaving, agriculture and aquaculture. Stop to see locals at work in the village and enjoy cycling on quiet roads through orchards and rice paddies (depends on season). On your return, we take a scenic route along the Mekong River and have a great opportunity for local interaction as we cycle past many fishing villages and then take a ferry across the river to our finish point and transfer back to Phnom Penh.In the afternoon we take a tour by private vehicle to Tuol Sleng Prison Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek to learn the story of the tragic legacy of the Khmer Rouge. The former school of Tuol Sleng served as a Khmer Rouge torture centre, and it’s estimated that more than 20,000 people were held and tortured here. The Choeung Ek Memorial is home to stupa made up of some 8,000 human skulls, marking the site of the infamous Killing Fields. This was the execution ground for the torture victims of Tuol Sleng, and standing in this peaceful setting it’s almost unthinkable to imagine that to date nearly 9,000 corpses have been exhumed from the area.Ohana Phnom Penh Palace Hotel or similar Meals included: Breakfast Day 3 Cycle and transfer to Kampong ChhnangAfter breakfast, we bid farewell to Phnom Penh and transfer to Prev Phnov bridge, where the bikes will be ready for us to start our ride towards Udong Mountain. Upon arrival, there will be the opportunity to visit the Udong Mountain site (by foot) to admire the views of the surrounding region. We then continue our cycle; stopping at Kampong Luong silver smith village, riding along the Tonle sap river to Longvek before stopping for lunch and then our transfer to Kampong Chhnang. We pass through some lovely countryside today and as we go, the villages become more remote and simpler. We spend some of the ride on dirt roads today. You will finish today's ride with a transfer of approximately 1 hour to our hotel. Depending on the journey time we may be able to head out on an optional afternoon walk to explore the city of Kampong Chhnang. The town of Kampong Chhnang is set on the Tonle Sap River and has a busy port and market area. Set back from the port is a quieter area with a pretty park and former colonial buildings. In many towns you will see carts loaded with terracotta pottery, (charcoal burners, pots and other items), on their long journey from their home village at Kompong Chhnang (clay pot port) to take their goods door to door. Families might be on the road for a month or more until they have sold all the items and can make their way home.Sovannaphum Hotel or similar Meals included: Breakfast Day 4 Ride and longer drive to BattambangToday a flat and dusty road takes you to the town of Battambang. Depending on the condition of the road it may be quite a bumpy ride past a pottery village, rice paddies and local farms. Not many European visitors stop in Battambang so you will find there is less English spoken and locals may be very interested to see you. The region is famous for its oranges. Today is a combination of cycling and some driving of approximately a total of 3.5 to 4 hours in total. This evening enjoy a walk around this peaceful and pleasant town where we spend the next 2 nights. The main parts of the city are situated close to the Sangker River, a tranquil, small body of water that winds its way through areas of the town. It is a nice, picturesque setting and as with much of Cambodia, the French architecture is an attractive bonus of the town.Classy Hotel or similar Meals included: Breakfast Day 5 Half day cycle around beautiful Battambang countryside and rural villagesThis morning you’ll enjoy a half-day bike trip through the beautiful surrounding countryside of Battambang. Stop along the way to discover the local rural way of life, discovering small cottage industries producing sticky rice, noodles, and fish paste.Today, we will ride the countryside roads and pass by a rural Muslim village. Here, we will visit families to learn about their everyday life, family history, and traditions. After, we will weave our way along the river roads to a village full of traditional houses. Here you'll learn about the traditional way of living and the changes happening in the Cambodian countryside before returning to Battambang for the remainder of the to relax or explore at leisure.Classy Hotel or similar Meals included: Breakfast Day 6 Scenic ride to PailinOnce more the scenery we encounter on today's ride is completely different. We hop on the bikes directly from the hotel and start cycling through other areas of Battambang towards Banon temple and Pailin. The start of the route again is quiet, before joining back onto the main road; a great way to see the real Cambodia. Passing rice fields, we may be greeted by local children all eager to say hello as we pass by before transferring by private bus to Pailin province to check into our hotel.Upon arrival at our hotel and after checking in, there will be the option to relax or perhaps take a short ride to explore the area.Memoria Palace & Spa or similar Meals included: Breakfast Day 7 Rural cycle and transfer onto Siem ReapEarly this morning, we start cycling from the hotel to Siem Reap province and experience more rural sights and sounds as we cycle along limitless jungle. After completing this morning’s ride, we transfer (approx. 1 hour) to our lunch stop, before transferring further (approx. 2.5 hours) onto Siem Reap by minivan. Due to years of civil war, Cambodia is poorer and less developed than its neighbours. Apart from growth in the capital and around Siem Reap, the way of life in the countryside is still very much the same as it has been for centuries.Tonight, your leader will accompany the group on a visit to the night market; a must see when visiting Siem Reap. Even if you're not looking for souvenirs; wandering through the stalls and surrounding shops the silks, cottons, silver and statues are a riot of colour and a feast for the eyes.Angkor Holiday Hotel or similar Meals included: Breakfast Day 8 Full day tour to explore Angkor Wat by bikeToday it is advisable to have an early start to avoid the inevitable crowds drawn to the wonders of Angkor. The various temples are spread over a wide area and are linked by shady avenues; meandering our way between them by bike gives us a unique perspective. Our cycle tour will include the jungle-covered Ta Prohm, with the amazing roots of the Fromager trees clinging to the ancient stones, Angkor Thom with the famous Bayon temple of 37 towers (originally there were 49) topped with the four faces of the king, and of course the incredible Angkor Wat, with its huge moat, long causeway and massive towers - it is the largest temple complex in Asia.Angkor Holiday Hotel or similar Meals included: Breakfast Day 9 Half day cycle and visit Banteay Srei temple; farewell dinnerOn our last ride, we cycle outside the main Angkor complex to the outlying temple of Banteay Srei, 35km from Siem Reap town. Our route takes us past paddy fields, and through pretty villages. Banteay Srei was built in the 10th Century and contains some of the finest examples of Khmer sculpture. Although much smaller than the later temples, here all of the buildings are covered in exquisite carvings. In the afternoon we transfer by vehicle back to Siem Reap and can stop and visit a few of the less visited Angkor temples on the way. Siem Reap town is pleasant to wander around; the market has plenty of interest and excellent shopping if you wish to visit it again and there is a vibrant nightlife scene. This afternoon there may also be time to visit the Tonle Sap Lake, which is a branch of the Mekong River. This optional trip includes a boat ride to see the floating fishing villages.Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner together at a special local restaurant overlooking the river where there is a passion to restore Cambodian cuisine to its former glory and put Cambodia back on the map as a culinary destination.Angkor Holiday Hotel or similar Meals included: Breakfast Dinner Day 10 End Siem ReapFor land only clients, the tour ends this morning after breakfast. Reviewed March 2020 Paul GreenGreat Experiences in Cambodia! This holiday was extremely enjoyable. It was varied and interesting throughout. The cycling was along flat roads and I was grateful for this as the maximum temperature in February was 30 degrees plus. We started cycling early in the morning so as to finish before it was too uncomfortable. Most of the hotels had swimming pools which I enjoyed immersing myself in at the end of the day. The activities were such as visiting the homes/ workshops of Cambodians making items was fascinating. I enjoyed the food, especially the fresh fruit. All all of our evening meals were varied and delicious. The snacks provided by our support team at regular intervals during the cycling were outstanding, they even provided a table cloth and cold wet towels! What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? At the end of On day 6 we walked up a small hill to see the impressive sunset from Phnom Yat.What did you think of your group leader? Channy is a superb leader. He is very genial and attentive. His knowledge and passion about Cambodia is infectious and his communication and organisational skills are excellent.Do you have any advice for potential travellers? Be prepared for some challenging cycling. The leader gave us regular breaks and the pace was manageable, however one day it was very hot and the road was straight and long. In addition works were being done on the road. In some places where the road was sandy I had to dismount and walk a few times. Is there anything else you would like to add? Cambodia is a good very good holiday destination. It was my first visit and I want to return. I was made to feel very welcome and many people speak English. The climate in February is dry and hot and it was great to escape the British winter.
Reviewed March 2020 Rob MackintoshCycling Cambodia The trip was well organised but be prepared for the heat. Some of the days did involve some hard cycling on dusty roads, I think the bikes have been well used and have seen some hard riding, the bike mechanics did their best to keep them going. I think the trip maybe better rated at 3.5 not 3 this is purely down to the heat and and the long dusty roads. There are no hills on this trip it is all flat a few descents would have been good. The snacks as always with Exodus are good especially the little cans of chilled coffee. What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? Siem Reap was great and especially Angkor Wat and getting there for the sunrise on the last day of the tour, was a great experience. What did you think of your group leader? Our tour leader was good although I would say not an early person. Special mention would go to Bo who was learning to be a guide his enthusiasm for cycling was second to none. Hopefully he will be given his own tours.Do you have any advice for potential travellers? Be prepared for the heat I only had a 500ml bike water bottle a larger one maybe better as you need to take on more fluids than you think. The tour does not offer a sunrise trip to Angkor Wat, four of us organised one ourselves which was worth the early start. We left the hotel at 04:30 by Tuk tuk and we were just about the first at the gate, Angkor Wat does not open until 5am, and it does get crowded. Is there anything else you would like to add? I would like to have seen an earlier start time on the group trip to Angkor Wat, and possibly some better quality bikes.
Reviewed December 2019 JASON GOODHINDFantastic trip My first trip with exodus and my first cycling trip ever. The customer service booking it and communications before the trip started were excellent and easy. Well done Exodus UK team for a great job and all the information you provided on trip notes and flight summaries. First class We had a truly fantastic guide - Channy - was really kind, considerate and passionate about the trip and his country. He was full of humour, had a great laugh and went out of his way to make sure all of us were OK. He was really knowledgeable about the country's complex history and religion and gave our trips real context. The cycling was a real mix of road (some main road but very minor roads free of heavy traffic), country roads and off road dirt tracks and the best day for me the track he took us through at Angkor complex through the jungle. It hopefully therefore ticked everyone's boxes across the trip who had different riding backgrounds (road/trails). Really felt that the routes gave a great insight into Cambodian way of life in the cities and in rural areas that you wouldn't see on the main roads. The people we met were all really friendly and the images of all the kids coming out onto the streets smiling and saying hello and waving as we passed by will stay with me for a long time. Angkor temple complex was a real highlight to visit and was a real highlight but each day we saw something that was a real joy to see from visiting temples, watching a local family making rice paper/silver/scarves etc it really gave you a sense of the real Cambodia. I would really recommend this trip to you. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Really nice group of 12 in total who all got along well. We had really great food, brilliant cycling snacks provided and all the back-up support team (mechanic, bus drivers and truck drivers) were lovely. Great specialised guides at Killing fields and in Battambong. A definite 5/5 for me.What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? There are several. Going to the killing fields/S21 prison was very sad and understanding how people were treated in these difficult years of Cambodian's history. The guide we had that day was excellent and really helped to understand these terrible events. Angkor temple complex - wow! All the temples we visited were truly remarkable and just took your breath away. The pictures do not give it justice. Really glad to visit them - full of amazing sculptures, decorative inscriptions and history. I must say though that the humility, positivity and eagerness to please and share their stories from local people was heart-warming. All the children were wanting to say hello as we cycled and wave to us. I really got a good feel from Cambodia and it's a country that I would like to come back to.What did you think of your group leader? Channy was just fantastic. He was really lovely guy - kind, considerate and passionate about the trip and his country. He was full of humour, had a great laugh and went out of his way to make sure all of us were OK. He was really knowledgeable about the country's complex history and religion and gave our trips real context. Unfortunately one of our team had two dogs run into his bike and cause an accident. Channy and the support team were very professional and got all the help to him really quickly and followed up to make sure he was OK. His knowledge of the route was excellent and he suggested some slight changes to some routes which were absolutely right. The route suggested through the jungle at Angkor was one such alteration which was my favourite day and route and a much better way to get there than on a busier route taken by other tourists. He was an absolute joy so thank you again Channy.Do you have any advice for potential travellers? A few things: 1. Gel saddle - made cycling much more bearable 2. Prepare for the heat - coming from the UK not used to cycling so much in 32-34 degree heat with humidity. We all managed it and we had pit-stops and re-fuelling breaks and excellent snacks 3. Just book it - you will have a fantastic trip and see a fantastic country.
Reviewed February 2019 Adam LevyBeguiling Cambodia A superb trip, with variety, local colour, great cycling (if you like it hot!), and loads of smiling. Considering this was the first departure for this trip it was brilliant in its calm and organisation - Leader Khim was absolutely superb - we got a real feel for this slightly beleaguered country which is absolutely well worth a visit as a standalone destination. Its certainly a real adventure in the best possible way. What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? The visits to local businesses and the visit to Angkor Wat were great, and the cameraderie of the group and team members was really important, and the gentle rides by the river were lovely. The well placed stops for amazing snacks, fruit and all important plentiful cold drinks and water were marvellous. Cold beers at the end of the day were not to be forgotten as well! What did you think of your group leader? Absolutely faultless, Khim and his team did so well considering this was the first trip of its kind, dealing with our different needs and expectations with consideration and great humour. Not bombarding us with facts - in no way did I feel 'templed out' - but answering all our questions and advice with candour and understanding and giving us a real background to the country's trials and tribulation both past and present. His insights into Buddhism and the complicated religious history of the sites was a real bonus.Do you have any advice for potential travellers? Be prepared for the heat - even with early starts the temperature soon rose impressively and we were regularly soaking scarves, buffs, and cotton caps in ice cold water to deal with the mid-morning and midday heat. The cycling is almost entirely flat, but don't be fooled by the seemingly low mileage. It's a grade 3 due to the heat and the road surfaces which were in some places pretty good, but more often were paths that varied from reasonably well surfaced, to rather gravelly, to pretty much no surface at all (basically just sand!). The bikes are brilliant and well-suited to the conditions and the need for the big tyres soon becomes very obvious. There is even a short stretch of real offroading through the sandy jungle around Angkor which was new to me and great fun once I got used to it. There are a few seemingly daunting stertches, but everyone was allowed to go at their own pace (although cycling with someone else always made it easier and the support from the second cyclist Hian was superb). Is there anything else you would like to add? As many people write in these reviews, just go for it! It was a great trip, extremely satisfying and fun (and very cheap as well). Take a gel saddle cover, padded gloves, something to protect your head from the sun that you can douse in ice-cold water which fits under your cycling helmet, and a good attitude.
