Advice for Potential Travellers

Highly recommended trip

Interesting and enjoyable

A highlight tour of some of Jordan’s best sites and an insight into Jordanian life. This was my first trip to a proper “middle eastern” country which is a part of the world we hear much about, some people say it’s this or it’s that, but to actually see it and experience it yourself is so enlightening. Jordan was great, as I mention later, it is safe and welcoming for us visitors. I never saw or had even a slight inkling of something untoward happening.

This trip obviously involves a fair bit of travelling around from one location to another. Our bus/coach was very good, high quality, comfortable with good aircon! We were a group of 16 in what much have been around a 50 seat coach, so there was plenty of space for everyone which made travel comfortable. I appeciated that.

The itinery is good for a one week trip, everywhere we went was worthwhile. Our guide Mikhled managed our time at each location well and I never felt rushed. We have plenty of time at Petra which may be the main attraction for many people visiting Jordan. It got very hot here and you cover a surprsing amound of ground walking around what is a very large site. While I agree with Exodus’s assessment that overall this is an Easy/Moderate activity level trip. The first day at Petra can perhaps push the boundaries of that for some people. Mikhled gave us a great tour of the main parts of Petra and at the conclusion of this told us we had free time to explore by ourselves and we would meet back at the hotel at a given time. The hotel was very conveniently close to the main entrance, a few hundred metres. Mikhled often gave a guided tour of a location and then allowed us free time afterwards. That was good.

Most dinners (Tea! I’m a northerner) are not included in this trip. Most evenings our guide Mikhled offered the group the option of joining him to dine at a local restaurant. There was no compulsion to do this, you are free to do your own thing but most of the time the group dined together. I liked the food in Jordan. Herbed and spiced chicken, lamb and beef featured heavily but not hot spices. We were treated to some Jordanian specialities like “Upside down”. As Exodus mention, seafood is the main fare in Aqaba on the Red Sea but there are plenty of other choices if that’s not your thing. Exodus also mention the famous “Zarb” at the Wadi Rum desert camp. This was indeed excellent and probably my single favourite meal of the trip.

The trip comes to a relaxing end at the Holiday Inn Dead Sea resort. Nice hotel, unlike any Holiday Inn I’ve stayed at before. There’s an optional trip to Bethany Beyand the Jordan. I’m not religious but still went there. There is still some history to see and an interesting border between Jordan and Israel down the middle of the River Jordan. Floating in the Dead Sea was a one of those experiences you’ve got to tick off. It was a good and slightly strange experience, the water is weird!

Probably seeing "The Treasury" at Petra with my own eyes after seeing so many photos over the years on the internet etc. A famous part of world history and impressive sight in it's own right. I also enjoyed the beauty and serenity of Wadi Rum in the evening at sunset.

Mikhled. Mikhled is an excellent guide in every aspect. Knowledge, organisation, humour, patience he has all the ideal qualities. It was a pleasure to be guided around Jordan and be educated about life in Jordan by Mikhled. We were in good hands.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go Now! Despite the ongoing events in Gaza (at the time of writing in June 25) this is going on a long way from Jordan and has no direct impact upon Jordan, especially from a tourists perspective. Unfortunately it has had an impact upon toursim and visitors are staying away. This is however to our advantage because otherwise potentially busy sites like Petra are far less crowded than they could be, which made our visits better all round. I found Jordan to be perfectly safe and with very welcoming pleasant people. A few times, while on the coach, we'd be driving slowly through part of a town and young children would wave at us. It just made me smile. Other stuff... every hotel we stayed in had either "British" plug sockets or multi sockets that accepted a British/Euro/US plug without an adapter. The Wadi Rum desert camp tent had a Euro/US socket. My departure was 17th May. I did not see a single mosquito anywhere. I didn't actually see many insects at all during my visit. Apart from flies at Petra that were drawn to the horses used for rides from/to the main entrance. In the second half of May temperatures were already peaking at 40C in open places like Jerash and Petra. Good luck in high summer! Wadi Rum desert camp was not cold, about 18C at dawn but I believe it can go a lot lower. At our first briefing Mikhled assured me it was ok to wear shorts anywhere we were going in Jordan... and it was! I even saw some young women wearing well above the knee shorts and they didn't seem to be getting any grief about it. Bartering over the price of certain things is common practice in Jodan. As a Briton I am generally useless at this. Embrace it or just accept that traders may do well out of you. Even the nice coach we travelled around Jordan in had WiFi as did every hotel. No digital detox! No WiFi at Wadi Rum desert camp though but some did get a patchy network data connection. Payment by card was almost always an option in most establishments, hotels and restaurants but I got the feeling that cash still comes first in Jordan. Obtaining Jordanian Dinars from ATMs or exchange kiosks was not a problem. I had an extra day at the Holiday Inn Dead Sea resort at the end of the trip because of my flight arrangements. This turned out to be a small bonus and allowed some of us to see a little more in the area and of course a morning dip in the dead sea. Maybe you'd like to consider and extra day. Consideration of an extra day at the start of the trip might not be a bad thing either. Due to Royal Jordanian's flight schedules from the UK we didn't arrive at the hotel in Amman until something like 2am and were up only a few hours later for our morning trip to Jerash. Not unbearable but a quicker turnaround than ideal.

Outrageously delightful

In so many ways this trip was not stressful.
To be able to do so many wonderful things and not have any issues or concerns made a strenuous hiking holiday relaxing and enjoyable.

Adrian is inspirational kind caring and very humorous. Very organized and understanding of the challenges that each tripper experiences on a guided tour with varying degrees of ability. All are included and treated with respect.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Allow the trip to play out as thought and effort has created the best and safest experience for people of varying abilities. Trust the plan for the day, relax, exercise and enjoy the best the Alps have to offer

We’ve just returned from the Mont Blanc Highlights hiking trip, and it was unforgettable—largely thanks to our incredible guide, Adrian.

From day one, Adrian set the tone with energy, humour, and crystal-clear briefings that made every hike feel exciting and manageable. His knowledge of the trails are amazing and the views are absolutely stunning.

Adrian struck the perfect balance: relaxed and fun, yet always professional and organised. His enthusiasm and calm leadership turned a great trip into an outstanding one. He made us feel safe, challenged, and totally immersed in the mountain magic.

Can’t recommend this trip—and Adrian—highly enough.

(We even wrote him a poem… that’s how good he was!)

Mont Blanc Highlights May 2025

We had an incredible time on our recent trip to Mont Blanc! Adrian encouraged us to push ourselves during the hikes and that we did! He led our group with an excitement and energy that kept us going!! Sandro and Violetta made our stay at the chalet feel like home and they both made sure we had dairy free options/meals throughout the day. I looked forward to Violetta’s gluten and dairy free cakes every day after our arduous hikes! I think we really lucked out with having the loft as our room for the week. We woke up to the sunrise over the mountains every morning and it was truly a sight to see. And our group of fellow travelers is one I will remember fondly!

A Journey to Remember

This holiday was a wonderful blend of physical challenge, beautiful scenery and charming culture. We returned home refreshed and already thinking of our next hiking adventure!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Adrian, was knowledgeable, passionate and inspiring. His knowledge of the region was impressive and his enthusiasm stood out. He had an innate ability to read the group’s pace always ensuring everyone felt safe and supported. A large part of what made this trip so unforgettable was because of him.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be sure to read the trip notes thoroughly as they provide valuable information! I was fully prepared with gear, fitness level and overall expectations! Highly recommend this trip!

A relaxing nature trip

This is a very relaxing hiking trip with lots of time to explore nature at its best in the Rodopi Mts!

Most Inspirational Moment

The deep gorges around Yagodina were so inspiring.

Nelly was the best! So passionate about these mountains and all their beauty!

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is not alpine hiking but a much easier relaxed pace to explore nature along the way.

Best way to see Malaysia combining Nature and Culutre

Malaysia is such a rich country with so much to offer from nature to history. The main reason I loved this trip was because it felt like it gave me a full experience of this beautiful country. From seeing Proboscis Monkeys in the wild to the beautiful sites like Georgetown, this trip had it all.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to pinpoint just one to be honest. The river cruise on the Kinabatangan River was such a great experience. Seeing the wildlife was amazing. The other thing I enjoyed was exploring Georgetown with our group. All the buildings and the history was so interesting. There are just so many to highlight.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I loved our Guide(s). I think it was great we had 1 guide in Borneo (Nelson) and 1 guide in the Malaysian Peninsula (Jason). Both are exceptional guides and very experienced. Not only is their knowledge of history and nature amazing, but their passion for what they do is clear. They really went the extra mile to take care of everyone in our group. Even though they have done these trips for years, I can't thank them enough for that spark and passion for what they do.

Advice for Potential Travellers

For those that don't know, Malaysia is very hot and humid. Now the good thing is you have air conditioning in your hotels; however, since it's so hot outside, one of the things I highly encourage all people to bring are electrolytes. It helped me and other travelers on my trip. Also think about a small compact umbrella. Not just for the rain, but also for the sun as it's fairly strong in the afternoon. Speaking of Rain, bring something to keep you dry because when it rains in Malaysia, it RAINS.

Best trip ever!

I really enjoyed getting to see all the animals you usually only see in books or Disney movies: Lions, meerkats, elephants, mongoose… the list goes forever. As if this wasn’t enough, the Namibian landscape is varied and impressive with sand dunes, mountains and the ocean. This trip takes you to all of these, and offers unforgettable adventures, such as tracking rhinos on foot or flying over the desert in a helicopter!

The pace of this trip is gentle enough that you will get some R&R in besides all the action, but is never boring – how could it be when there’s so much to see and do?

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved tracking the rhinos on foot, as it gave us a chance to experience these wonderful creatures in their natural environment without anyone else around.

I will nominate Shane as leader of the year! He was the most up-beat, fun guide with extensive knowledge on pretty much anything under the sun. No matter what we asked him (astronomy, flora, fauna, geography), he was ready with a detailed answer. He always took us to the best restaurants and made sure we had everything we needed. Intelligent and sunny, he's the ideal guide. Thank you for helping us have the best time, Shane! I miss you!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be sure to bring your malaria pills as it can be tricky to get them in Namibia outside the bigger cities. It's best to buy your anti-mosquito spray in Namibia as a higher concentration of Deet is necessary than what is typically sold in North America and Europe. Also be sure to make loads of space on your photo-taking device of choice, as you will have plenty to take photos of! :)

History, Hospitality and Heart Across the Silk Road

This trip was the perfect mix of big-name Silk Road cities and places I’d never heard of but will never forget. It was amazing to explore the spots you read about in history books, but I also really loved getting off the main tourist trail. Walking through what used to be the Aral Sea was eye-opening. It’s one of those moments that makes you pause and reflect. Uzbekistan is bigger than you expect, so there are definitely some long travel days, but they’re totally worth it if you go in with a good attitude.

Most Inspirational Moment

So much happened in two weeks that choosing one highlight feels impossible. Walking the quiet streets of the famous Silk Road cities in the early morning, with the sun just coming up and locals setting up for the day, felt like stepping back in time. The warmth of our homestay family in the Nurata Mountains and the calm, open beauty of Aydarkul Lake were grounding and peaceful moments. Standing at the edge of the Aral Sea, surrounded by what was once a bustling harbour town, was something else entirely. It was confronting and really stuck with me. The Savitsky art museum in Nukus also really surprised me. I didn’t know much about it before going, but the collection of Soviet-era art that had been hidden away from censorship was incredible. I didn’t expect to be so drawn in, but it ended up being one of the most interesting parts of the trip. Our final day was a surprise favourite. Visiting the solar furnace and learning about the research happening there was so interesting. We stopped for grass-filled samsa at a local roadside spot, made fresh by a team of women working in perfect rhythm. Then we took a gondola into the snowy mountains, and it felt like we had landed in a completely different country. Our final day was a surprise favourite. Dilshod was the best. You can tell how much he loves his country, its people and his family. He shared so much about the history and culture with genuine enthusiasm, and he’s built strong relationships throughout the years that added to the experience. He always had the best food recommendations and made sure we had the nicest table wherever we went. He really made the trip feel personal and seamless, and it wouldn’t have been the same without him.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Check the weather just before you go. Our trip was unseasonably hot but had been rainy the week before Bring a scarf with you to cover up in the holy places, or buy one at a local market. It’s best to get a light one that balls up small so it is easy to carry. Be ready for long travel days on some bumpy roads. Bring something to keep yourself entertained. Try to get up early in the main Silk Road cities. It’s a great time to enjoy the atmosphere before the crowds arrive and to see locals setting up for the day. And of course… all you need is plov. But make sure to try the local version in each region as the dish changes as you travel around.
