Easy, tranquil walking based in the north western corner of Menorca.

There's a sense of peace and tranquillity on beautiful Menorca, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and home to the greatest concentration of prehistoric sites anywhere in Western Europe. More sparsely populated than any other Balearic island and only a fifth of the size of Mallorca, it has more beaches than Mallorca and Ibiza combined! The island has been claimed in turn by many armies, all desperate to control the capital Mahon, set on the Mediterranean's most perfect natural harbour.

Eating and Drinking

All breakfasts included and evening meal on first night included.

Menorcan cuisine is Mediterranean, based on fresh natural ingredients from land and sea. Fresh fish, shellfish and lobster are often incorporated into a stew such as the famous “caldereta” - lobster stew, for which Fornells is particularly renowned. Farmhouse cheeses made in local farms have a ‘denomination of origin’ here and are very tasty. Meat from the island farms is also delicious, often made into chorizo style sausages and served for breakfast.

Cuisine has been influenced by the French, who changed the way the Menorcans made their bread. The original recipe for mayonnaise comes from Menorca and following the French conquest of Menorca was introduced to the court of Louis XV and became the international known food it is today.

Weather

The trip runs from May through to October , it is generally quite hot in May, June and September with approximately 10 hours of sunshine per day. Average maximum temperatures range between 23-26ºC. October is a cooler monh with increased rainfall and average maximum daytime temperatures range between 15 and 23ºC but even at this time of year it is often perfectly pleasant.

Is this trip for you?

This self-guided walking holiday combines a wonderfully varied itinerary that takes in many of these ancient sites, exploring stunning coastal scenery dotted with narrow rocky inlets and magnificent beaches. Castles, fortresses and watchtowers line the coast, linked by the Cami de Cavalls, the paths originally used by the soldiers. These now allow walkers to explore the coastline with its idyllic sandy beaches, hidden coves and bays with dazzling aquamarine seas. With the freedom a car affords, you really can explore this entire beautiful island at your own pace. Car Hire is essential for this trip (included when booking a flight-inclusive package).

This is a self-guided tour, as such there will be no group or tour leader and you are free to complete the walks at your own pace. Please bear in mind that although this is a self-guided holiday, the atmosphere in the hotels tends to be quite social and they will sometimes place walkers together at breakfast and dinner. We have suggested that 8yrs is the minimum age for this trip, but as it is self-guided and you will be leading your own family we will ultimately leave this decision up to you.
