Although close to the Costa Blanca, the dramatic Aitana Massif in Spain has remained a secret to all but a few discerning visitors. We follow traditional footpaths and mule tracks, mostly along ridge lines, for spectacular panoramas, and then descend to beautiful valleys with natural springs and limestone amphitheatres. The rocky peaks and steep valleys that sweep down to the Mediterranean coast benefit from a warm climate for more than 300 days a year, making this an ideal location for out-of-season walking.

Begin your adventure at our pension in Guadalest, halfway up the valley on the north face of the Aitana Massif.

If you’d like to explore straight away, there is an optional self-guided walk around Guadalest. Our tour leader can provide you with the information needed.

Around 6pm, say hola to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.

This evening your tour leader ensures a big Spanish welcome over dinner.

We make our way to Racó de Tovaines, where we access the spectacular limestone peaks and needles of Penya Roc and walk through El Salt up to Collado Papatxi.

This area enchants people with its soaring towers and surrounding rock walls. Early sunset rays highlight the spine of the jagged Castellets Ridge that stretches down to Orxeta.

We return through Pas del Comptador back to Benimantell.

After a short transfer to Rincón del Olvido, we begin by ascending to pass El Contador (3,280ft/1,000m) and follow the western spine of the Serrella ridge to Mallada del Llop (4,465ft/1,361m).

We usually stop for a picnic lunch here and explore Pla de la Casa, one of the biggest and best-preserved snow wells, in the Valencia region, while enjoying the sweeping views of the Aitana range, and even the Valencia Mountains on a clear day.

After we begin our long descent, initially on a fairly steep gradient with a rocky/scree surface, which we zigzag down. During the last stretch, we follow a pleasant forest road and finish with a transfer back to our accommodation.

Embark on a fairly challenging walk to the summit of Puig Campana (4,626ft/1,410m) to enjoy 360-degree panoramas over peaks and ridges.

We approach the north face of this mountain along good trails and paths, embarking on a gentle climb passing the Collao del Llamp to the Collao Pouet, the base of the mountain.

From here, we climb a new footpath, which is technical and rocky, returning to our vehicle from the Casa de Dios. Scrambling is required on some sections.

Today is a free day to relax or perhaps head to the beach at Villajoyosa or visit a chocolate factory. Alternatively, take a tram to Altea and visit the old town and art galleries.

This evening, our tour leader can organise a group dinner at a restaurant in Guadalest.

Begin at the reservoir, hiking along the newly restored traditional path of Solana de Gorgues, which in 2,295ft (700m) of ascent takes us to the Font Major.

From here, we discover the high pastures of Foia Plana towards Morro Blau, a rocky prominence visible from many coastal points.

We have our lunch close to a fire-lookout building, before descending along Peña del Rastrell to the reservoir.

From the pension, we walk along the northern slopes (on some departures, we may need to take a transfer for this section) up to the Font de Partagat and then scramble through Pas de la Rabosa, the only natural break in the Aitana, which gives access to the summit from this north side.

We lunch at the Simas limestone fissures, which are up to 295ft (90m) deep, situated on a ridge near the summit of Aitana. It is an impressive geological formation and a perfect picnic spot. Weather permitting, it’s possible to climb the summit (optional).

We then have another long descent to Penyo Mulero reaching Font del Moli in Benimantell.

Hostel Rincón de Pepe, a family-run hostel in Benimantell, Alicante

We stay at Rincón de Pepe, a two-star hostel in the heart of Benimantell in the Guadalest Valley, approximately 40mi (60km) from Alicante and away from the crowded Costa Blanca. It is ideally situated for our adventure, minimising transfer times for our walks and offering views over the Mediterranean.

It has only eight rooms, which all offer sea views and the opportunity to enjoy a sunrise every morning. There is a fireplace in the restaurant, an ideal meeting point for pre-dinner drinks; in winter, it also serves as an improvised barbecue to grill sausages or vegetables for dinner.

Additionally, the staff at Rincón de Pepe produce olive oil from the many olive trees surrounding the property; during the winter season, there will be oranges with which you can make your own freshly squeezed orange juice at breakfast. Local bottled wine is included for all five evening meals or soft drinks/beers.

There is also a back terrace/entrance, used only by our groups, which provides direct access to a private meeting room. This entrance also includes a small area where we can leave boots, walking poles and any wet walking gear.

Suitability: This adventure is among our tougher Activity Level 4 trips. You should be confident in your physical condition and ability to deal with heights, rocky and difficult underfoot terrain. It is for anyone confident in their health and fitness. It is not recommended as a beginner’s trek. It is suited for those who regularly hill walk and have put in some physical preparation beforehand. However, it is also possible to stay at the hotel and do your own walks or other activities from there.

Hikes: The walking routes are all fairly long (around 9mi-12mi/15km-20km a day) and vary in duration from seven hours to 8hr 30min per day (including stops). In five days of walking, we climb three summits: Serrella (4,465ft/1,361m), Puig Campana (4,626ft/1,410m) and Aitana (5,112ft/1,558m) with approximately 3,280ft (1,000m) of ascent and descent on each of these days. The order of walks may vary depending on weather conditions and group ability.

Terrain: Most of the paths we follow are footpaths and mule tracks. Some sections are with a gentle gradient, while others follow quite steep rocky paths (sometimes with scree slopes) and there are some sustained ascents/descents. We also trek some cross-country terrain.

Getting to the start hotel

The start hotel is approximately an hour’s drive from the airport. Your options for this journey are:

Take an Exodus transfer
We provide one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times or to arrange a private transfer.

Make your own way

It’s possible to reach the start hotel by public transport, but the journey is complicated. We therefore recommend joining the group transfer where possible. If not, it is possible to reach pension by taking the airport bus to Benidorm (around €25) and then a taxi to the pension (around €30).

Catching your return flight
There’s a group departure transfer to the airport for those booked onto a chosen flight. Please speak to your sales representative if you wish to join. If the group departure transfer does not suit your flight time, speak to your sales representative to arrange an alternative transfer.

All breakfasts, five lunches and six dinners (plus local wine with dinner, one bottle per three people) are included.

Breakfast: Continental style – local seasonal fruit, orange juice, different types of bread, cakes, cheese, ham, or bacon and eggs on request every day. Tea and coffee.

Lunch: Picnic lunches will usually consist of bread rolls (our famous wholewheat triple deckers) with cheese and salad/meat, fruit, muesli bars, biscuits or nuts, and a juice carton. Our local guide usually also provides some snacks such as pickled olives, chocolates and dried figs.

Evening meal: As the main meal of the day, we enjoy a large variety of local cuisine including espencat, minxos (small pancakes), legume soups, roasted lamb, and, of course, local paella. Most of the food is freshly prepared from locally grown seasonal produce, and the pension produce its own olive oil. A reasonable amount of red wine is provided with the evening meal, but additional beverages are not included.

Mealtimes in Spain are later than in many other countries; dinner is usually between 7pm and 7.30pm. For the group meal in Guadalest on Day 5, allow approximately €30.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets are well catered for given prior notice, and most other dietary requirements can also be accommodated if you let us know in advance (at the time of booking). Please note, we can’t guarantee any dietary requests made on arrival.

This area is known to have the most benign climate in the whole of Europe. Winter is mild and sunny, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year. At night, temperatures can be chilly, especially in the mountains. The little rainfall is usually concentrated in very few days at the beginning of autumn, but rain cannot be discounted on any departure.

The daytime temperatures in winter usually vary between 14C and 20C (57F and 68F) depending on altitude and orientation. These winter temperatures are ideal for walking although, except for July and August, you can walk here year round. In spring and autumn, temperatures should be between 25C and 30C (77F and 86F) but May, June and September departures may experience some warmer days, up to 35C (95F).

Stunningly unspoiled climbing!

Although I travelled from quite far away, (Vancouver Island, Canada), I was so very pleased at the kindness and friendly attitude of everyone in the group. I was the eldest in the group (73 years young), but had absolutely no trouble keeping up. I would say this trip is not for the feint of heart; even at the end of October/early November the days were quite hot (although the evening temps were perfect). We experienced no bugs and no rain throughout the week. Definitely expect long days and some arduous climbs as well as steep descents. Hiking poles were essential. It was occasionally windy and cool at each summit but I was able to hike in shorts all week. I’m quite used to climbing mountains and found this itinerary to be just perfect. The accommodation was basic but comfortable; the food was good but at times limited for me as a vegetarian. Breakfasts outside were fantastic and the triple-decker sandwiches that José made for us were to die for. You definitely won’t be disappointed.

It’s difficult to choose just one moment; felt on top of the world so many times during the week.

José was an amazing group leader. He grew up in the area and his historical knowledge was astonishing. It added great flavour and purpose to each day’s climbing adventure. I’m so in love with the lay of the land ; completely unspoiled, dramatic and so clean. It was great to be able to drink the water (unfiltered). José gathered us each evening for a debriefing in preparation for the next day’s adventure. It was early to bed after dinner each night.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Ensure that you are fit enough to enjoy long days of hiking (often eight hours with a break for lunch). There’s really only one rest day and we didn’t finish hiking until almost dinnertime.

Who would have thought (without this trip) that there could be such astonishingly lively, unspoiled and (for the most part) unfrequented mountain terrain - and such beautiful and varied walking - just a stone's throw from the infamous high-rise resort of Benidorm?

Most Inspirational Moment

If high places, sweeping views, dramatic cliffs and rock formations, sun, sky, sea, forest, wild flowers and a general absence of people rock your boat, the trip will be full of inspiring moments.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Also inspiring. Extremely knowledgable about his region, and generous in sharing a vast and varied range of information on all sorts of (interesting) topics, which further enriched the walks. Funny, engaging, astute; he was fundamentally kind-hearted but without being particularly indulgent. He kept an eye on us, but didn't coddle us. We were expected to take responsibility for ourselves (and for keeping up) on the walks. And It was stated at the outset that there could/would be limited tolerance for dawdlers! In an ideal world, and given the glorious October weather, I'd probably have enjoyed the walks (even more than I already did) at a slightly more relaxed pace, the better to absorb the magnificent surroundings en route and probably take more photos; but I was still able to do both things - just maybe a little more hurriedly than I am used to. I imagine that the pace/timetable was however in part dictated by the amount José had still to achieve following our daily return from the walk, including the next day's shopping and picnic preparation. He was a one-man tour-de-force organisationally: incredibly hardworking/dedicated to the cause. He provided excellently for us at lunchtime daily (making genuinely the most tasty and satisfying sandwiches that I've ever been fed on a walking holiday!) as well as transporting us safely and punctually by minibus, organising, leading, educating and entertaining us throughout the trip. And only occasionally appeared a bit weary.. 😉

Advice for Potential Travellers

Hone your fitness to enjoy the walks to the full. Be prepared for long, steep ascents and descents. Make sure you're prepared for cold mountaintops even in good weather (in October, anyway). Be prepared for a superb week of walking and scenery. Make sure you download either maps.me or the app José recommends before you do the first self-guided walk: it will ensure you find the correct route. The local village of Guadalest is very attractive and the castle well worth paying to enter/explore. The midweek day-trip to the coast is also very worthwhile and both towns are well worth exploring. The little history museum in the first coastal town is worth a visit.

Enjoyable week in tall limestone peaks

I really enjoyed this area and all the walks we did, and the day off on the coast. Overall a very positive and friendly experience for my first group holiday on my own for 25years. The walks we did were essentially all in a semi-circle area around a valley, though each day had a slightly different character and feel to me. All were either started from the pension or a short drive away. We saw some goats and buzzards, though overall less wildlife than I am used to. All the paths were relatively quiet compared to many English popular areas, which I enjoyed. There was a drive down to a stream through narrow town streets that was fun and a chance to buy local olive oil (which did survive the flight back). I enjoyed getting up to see each pretty sunrise. Both towns we visited either side of Benidorm on our day off I also surprised myself by enjoying and are worth visiting.

the things I enjoyed most were the walks I had come to do, especially enjoyed Puig Campana and Fat Man's Agony way up onto Aitana.

Jose was a very knowledgeable and informative leader, having grown up and live in a nearby valley. He sensibly tailored the walks to the group ability and on the hotter days. I was happy where needed to slow down, admire the landscape and take yet more photo's.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My trip was end of October and apart from the day we arrived, sunny and at times hot for some, therefore be prepared for 6-8hours of walking in the heat. The rocks coming down most paths though dry were often skiddy and easy to slip down on, which I even did despite having new grippy boots and poles. I found the walks on the easier side of challenging, shorter than I was used to, equivalent sort of climbs to what I do in the English Lakes with less exposure due to the bushes/ scrub (only short exposures was on the last two days with a steep rocky slope section with good zig zag path and a step across with a chain, then 2-3 move simple rock scramble/ climb with a chain; there are others but are optional/ extras to the walks) and I found the heat much less sweaty for the equivalent English heat, though was the youngest in my 50's and others may have struggled at times on parts of the walks. The route's may be adjusted therefore accept the advice Jose gives as he knows the area. Autumnal colours only seen really on the last 2 days higher up, most trees look evergreen to me. It is worth doing the optional day trip to the coast, I enjoyed both places and the coastal walk to a viewpoint over Benidorm with large butterflies, though didn't have time to do all I wanted. Jose set up a WhatsApp group for photo sharing. It is a worth doing the optional first afternoon self-guided walk to scenic Guadalest; I didn't mind when we went a bit further down and therefore had a longer road walk; it is a very good introduction to the area. 8 people is the optimum number for this trip as that is the capacity of their mini-bus; if more book they have to book another vehicle which can limit options. The people in our group were mostly in their 60's I think. The pension we stayed at I liked, nice location for sunrise and sunset, closer to the road than I had expected though didn't bother me, though is on the simpler more basic side; expect some things not to work as well or have to collect a replacement toilet roll from the corridor for example, the shutters I gave up on closing too fiddly when tired so bring a sleep mask, be careful in the tiny bath/ shower as the shower curtains suddenly fell down on me while washing my hair which was rather surprising, and don't look under your bed until the end of the trip (it was rather dusty). There was plenty to eat/ snack on; vegetarians may want to check there is no meat, there were some occasions when this was queried both in the pension and at the day off restaurant. Kettle and hot drink things in the small lounge downstairs. I didn't need to touch the small supplies I brought with me in case. I did drink some spring water the last day, but then had a mild stomach upset once home. Overall an area well worth a visit and hope Exodus keep doing this one.

Well organized trip!

This was a well organized trip in a remote region. Beautiful views and very quiet trails . The hikes are quite challenging with a good amount of exposure in certain sections. Jose,our guide was very knowledgeable and experienced and yes,he does make the best lunch sandwiches! The accommodations were simple , comfortable with a great view.

An excellent week of hiking, led by José. About 1,000m of ascent on most days, so you need to be reasonably fit - but the views are most definitely worth the climb. The hotel is simple but perfectly ok - and the food prepared by Raquel was tasty. It's a small hotel, so the exodus party takes over the whole hotel which is helpful when doing evening briefings.The weather in March was cool (c15C max most days) which was ideal for hiking.

José was a good group leader - very knowledgable about the local area, and made adjustments to daily walks to suit the group (some group members did slightly shorter walks but still managed to join the group).

Amazing Trip

I recently completed the Sierra de Aitana trek in Spain with Exodus, and I can confidently say it was an incredible experience. From start to finish, the entire week was filled with breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and a real sense of adventure. The trek itself was challenging but absolutely rewarding, with a variety of terrains that kept things interesting. The views from the top of the Sierra de Aitana were absolutely stunning, with panoramic vistas over the mountains and valleys below.

I really enjoyed hiking on Serella peak, Aitana Peak and Puig campana. Where you enjoy the panoramic views.

Jose was an outstanding guide—friendly, approachable, and deeply knowledgeable. Being a local, Jose had an incredible understanding of the region’s history, culture, and agriculture, which he shared with us throughout the trek. His passion for the area was contagious, and it really enhanced the experience. Whether it was explaining the geology of the mountains, the history of the region, or the agricultural practices in the area, he made everything feel alive and relevant.

Fantastic Trip

Spent a great week walking in Sierra de Aitana. The walks were challenging but well worth the effort. The views from the summits were spectacular. Jose was a great guide and as he was local he was so knowledgeable about the area and passionate about his country. He made us lovely sandwiches for lunch and we also had pasta one day. Jose’s mother made little cotton lunch bags for us to use for the week - a nice touch. The accommodation was more than I expected - clean, good breakfasts and a lovely 3 course meal with wine in the evening. The drinks are very reasonably priced. There was a room set aside for Exodus and coffee, tea, milk and biscuits were provided. Raquel and Pepe who ran the hostel were a joy! Jose’s dog Bobi joined us on our last 2 walks. So friendly and well behaved. It was also nice to meet Sara.

I loved all the walks, there was something different every day but I really enjoyed the Simas Limestone fissures and scaling Aitana Peak.

Jose was lovely, funny, kind, approachable and safe. We had a briefing every day about the next days walk so we knew what to expect

Advice for Potential Travellers

Mosquitoes! Make sure you have a good repellent. Study boots/walking shoes as lots of scree. If you use walking poles bring them. Plenty of water bottles or water reservoir - the hostels tap water was drinkable. My trip was in October and the sea was still quite warm so you may wish to bring your swims as Jose took us to Villajoysa after one of the walks.
