Wet & wild!

This is an extraordinary trip even if the Northern Lights are not visible, there is nowhere else so accessible that has such a fascinating and diverse landscape.
The people are lovely and the food top quality. It is an expensive country however, additional food and drink and souvenirs are pricey.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking on the glacier in crampons, ice axe and helmet and descending into its crevasses among 2000 year old ice was an amazing experience. The final morning was very well planned, starting out below ground in a lava tube then being taken straight to the Blue Lagoon prior to catching the flight home. Don't be put off by thinking that the Blue Lagoon is a tacky tourist trap - it's not, it's an amazing and relaxing end to the trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Orri was an exceptional leader, friendly, helpful and approachable, nothing was too much trouble for him. He kept us entertained with his stories of Icelandic history and folklore during the longer road sections.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take plentry of layers and good quality warm and waterproof clothing, The weather is going to be both cold and wet and can change rapidly, if you are prepared for that then you will enjoy the trip all the more.

Fantastic, active way to explore 3 countries, their culture and wildlife.

An all-round fantastic holiday. A great way to see three countries at a slower pace. Cycling through the villages gives you a great chance to soak up their way of life. It was great to be active each day, fitting so much in to any one day. On paper the cycling distances look short but in the heat they are about right. There were a few hills but the scenery totally made it worthwhile. The changing landscapes (rain forest, volcanoes, islands, Pacific coast, Caribbean coast, continental divide etc) were great to experience. There are fantastic opportunities to see wildlife be it from the roadside, in the hotel grounds or via activities such as the river floats and canopy walks.
The trip has been well planned to provide the perfect balance of cycling activity, wildlife spotting and experiencing the three countries. Hotels were better than I had expected and restaurants were well chosen.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many: Seeing inside the live volcano; Seeing all the animals on the road/in the hotel grounds/via trips such as the river float (Howler Monkeys, Toucans, Iguanas, Coatis, Frogs, Crocodiles etc); Passing through the villages, getting a feel for local life and seeing all the villagers wave and say ¡Hola!; Sunsets/sunrises on both coasts.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The Team were really superb: Roberto (Lead Guide), Walter & Alvertivo (Guide/Mechanic), Neno (Driver). They worked well together to provide excellent service and support. Roberto delivered a very well organised trip which went seamlessly. His knowledge and information on each country/location was invaluable. The regular briefings and well planned pit stops were great. Booking group lunches/dinners, and the organised bill paying & individual account keeping made life so much easier and saved a lot of time. His additional help with translating dietary requirements was appreciated. Border crossing were made much easier thanks to their help. The support provided on the road by the Guide/Mechanics and Driver were much appreciated. From on the road mechanics to loading the bikes and general encouragement. Between them, their wildlife spotting was fantastic. Many thanks to all of you for really making the trip wonderful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Kit: Padded cycling shorted and padded cycling gloves are essential - there are some very bumpy roads in Nicaragua. If you can, take your own saddle as well. They can also fit your own pedals if you prefer to take cycling shoes. Cycling snacks: take your own snacks, gels etc if you are used to using them or have any intolerances. They provide some biscuits / isotonic / fruits at stops. For Gluten Free travellers, there were options at breakfast in all but a few places so just take a small amount of GF breakfast food. Lunches / dinners were mainly in restaurants where there was a full menu choice, so there was always something which could be eaten (practise your spanish for clarifying with waiting staff or ask your guide for help). Currency: there is no need to exchange to any local currency. Take USD. All three countries accept USD and you get change in local currency in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, which you just need to spend before the border. You can use credit cards in a lot of the restaurants and you pay the guide for your lunches in USD cash in the first two countries. Re-apply sun cream at each stop (think about taking some sleeves for the strong afternoon sun) along with regular mosi spray in the evenings/early mornings (mosis only seem to be around in a few locations). Don't take too many clothes. It is very warm, even in the evenings and cycling clothes can be hand washed and dried overnight in the first two countries. Also there is a launderette in La Fortuna. The cycling is hot and there are a few hills but you can take your time and there are plenty of stops. Take your time to spot the wildlife - it's worth going a little slower in some locations. I would recommend hiring quad bikes on Bocas del Tores as a way to see the rest of the island.

The perfect way to see Sri Lanka...

A fabulous trip – cycling is the perfect way to experience Sri Lanka. The trip is varied, interesting, enjoyable and fun. Loved it all – the local tea stops, the wildlife, the scenery, the food, the people, the temples…. A wonderful experience in a beautiful country.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many highlights it's hard to choose.... Seeing wildlife as you pedalled along was incredible, peacocks, kingfishers, monitor lizards, monkeys and even an elephant and crocodile and just so many amazing birds I'd never seen before. The people... So warm, welcoming and friendly. I will remember the beautiful smiles, the greetings of good morning whilst pedalling through villages and the children excitedly running to wave and greet us. Visiting Sigiriya Rock, Dambulla Rock Temple, the long scenic downhills, the beautiful hill country area and seeing a leopard at Yala national park.

Superb... Best guide I have ever had. Suresh gives 100% every single day. He is extremely organised and very aware of group and individual needs and works tirelessly to ensure everyone is having a good trip. Suresh has a good sense of humour and he goes the extra mile to give the group so many wonderful experiences. He is very knowledgable and passionate about his country - you learn so much about culture and wildlife. An outstanding guide - we were very grateful for his enthusiasm, endless energy and for making it such a fun, enjoyable and interesting trip. Also he gave us some great advice for our extended time in Sri Lanka. Thank you Suresh!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are a lot of dogs around... Some just sleep on the road, others wander in front of you, some just bark as you pass by but you occasionally get one that will chase you. We didn't have any problems at all but if you are a person who is really scared of dogs this might be an issue.

Great walking variety on a small island.

Very enjoyable walking trip in a lovely destination, reasonable accommodation & food and a good variety of walks.

Most Inspirational Moment

The caldera rim walk to Roque de Los Muchachos was pretty impressive and most enjoyable, but the walk in the gorge of the Taburiente river was probably even better. A shame we missed the Ruta de Los Volcanes due to bad weather!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jonas Perez - The most informative, helpful, knowledgeable and entertaining tour leader you will ever meet! He obviously loves his Island and his 'job' and wants everybody else to share this with his enthusiasm and humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walks are tough without being too hard if you're reasonably fit, but don't believe the trip notes - days 6 & 7 are not the most challenging, they are just long but quite simple walks, the most challenging day is day 4 around the caldera rim, thankfully followed by the rest day!

An absolutely brilliant walking holiday

A superb week walking the paths and steps(there are just a few thousand!) of the Amalfi coast. The views were outstanding, after a misty start the weather became warm and sunny, the group were excellent company and Paul, our leader, was absolutely great.

Most Inspirational Moment

The villages and lemon groves clinging to the hillsides, getting to know a totally new area for us both, the sheer beauty of the landscape, stepping back in time at Pompeii and the awesome majesty of Vesuvius dominating the Naples skyline.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paul was great, a brilliant leader in every aspect and great fun to be with; plus he made sure that the 'tail enders' has sufficient time to rest before the next stage of a walk.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walks are more at the moderate than leisurely end of the scale.

Borneo Wildlife Discover

This is an excellent trip to discover the wildlife and to explore the jungles of Borneo. The trip is well planned from the modern bustling cities of Kuching, Kota Kanabalu and Sandakan to the jungle resorts of Muli and Borneo. The opportunities to see wildlife are many and often you see it in the least expected way for example, a python curled up on the back of a truck in the Hotel Yard!

Most Inspirational Moment

I can never answer this question because these trips are a continual mixture of high points but possibly just sitting alone in the Borneo Forest Lodge looking at the birdlife with Orangutans in the nearby forest, a moment of quiet reflection in the middle of a busy trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Manuel was excellent His knowledge of the wildlife was superb and when asked for a particular birdsong, he could identify it immediately as well as the vast number of insects which we saw. On a personal note, I arrived separately from the Group as I had been travelling in Australia and on the day before the main group arrived, I fell heavily on a wet marble pavement in Kuching bruising ligaments in my leg. I realised that I was unable to participate in some of the more strenuous activities on this trip and Manuel arranged for me to visit a Doctor and throughout the trip, he could not have been more supportive. Manual reported the problem to Exodus and their support and help was gratefully appreciated. I felt that travelling with Exodus you were not another client but an individual and you were to receive personal attention.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a busy tour but with two nights in most locations you do have time to relax. Costs are low so you can eat well and cheaply. If you are interested in wildlife, this is an excellent well planned and managed trip.

Albania a Country of Contrasts

Every day on this trip brings new insight into Albania. Just when you think you have begun to understand the people and their country you learn or see something new which changes your opinion again. Our group of 14 (3 couples and the rest singles) set off on our adventure from the moment the plane landed, so be prepared this is a busy trip, but not too energetic.

Most Inspirational Moment

Starting the trip with small historic churches, onto prehistoric remains, recently abandoned communist villages, ancient civilisations and modern european style towns the trip has too many highlights to list. Add to this the magnificent sea views, wide open plains and snow topped mountains the countryside is equally fascinating.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Erion our leader and Goshi our driver were both highly professional, but also good fun guys. Noting was too much trouble.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Hotels vary through the trip from basic to modern or quaint. Food is mainly meat on the bone or fish (seaside/lakeside) with salads, grilled veg and potatoes. Often the food is served in bits e.g. salad, then meat, then veg, so this can be confusing. Raki is the local drink and "Raki O Clock" seemed to occur several times a day at the request of our tour group.

Galapagos Wonderland

When this trip was advertised on the site at the end of last summer I booked straight away, something about this magical place appealed to me. Everything you see on the TV is there, it is all around you, from the first steps on the Islands you see Iguanas, Finches, Fly catchers with their brilliant yellows and oranges.
Our first introduction to the Galapagos is a boat trip out to the locally known Kicker rock and our first snorkelling,
our first Turtles, rays and for the lucky few even Shark.Blue footed boobies on the rocks, with Frigate birds filing the skies and Sea lions filling the seas.
It was like everywhere you looked there was more to see and marvel at,birds so close Iguanas round almost every corner.
Then came what we all wanted to see the Galapagos giant tortoises, the breeding programme is well established and it is great to see the work they are doing.
After a few days and a change of Islands we began our trek up the Sierra Negra volcano. The feeling you get from the rim of this enormous crater is one of awe and power. the next thing was to see the steam coming from live vents on the mountain side, imagining what life was like thousands of years ago.We then walked up to the vents and the smell of sulphur was really strong but again the feeling of power was still there.
Onto the rest of the trek with camping on the rim, well looked after by our helpers who with the horses got everything we needed to the rim and cooked us all very good meals, thanks.
This trip is very full on and every day so far we have an early start and either walked or took boats to visit many islands and wildlife areas.
This trip exceeded all of my expectations and with a great leader in Pablo who`s knowledge of the Islands was fantastic, we the group who all got on so well together, cared for each other, they helped make this whole trip the best ever.
Although it did seem a awfully long way back home!!

Most Inspirational Moment

This is easy for me it has to be going up Sierra Negra, a real live volcano, awesom power from the very heart of the earth.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pablo, the leader for our trip was the best his knowledge of the islands was amazing and with the help of the local guides including Joceleyn (not sure of the spelling there) we could not have been looked after better.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare to be amazed at the beauty of this amazing place.

Fab Trip -Just Book It!

The trip was recommended to me by previous travel buddies and lived up to all expectations. The scenery is beautiful, the accommodation great and very warm and the equipment provided is superb. Although you try lots of activities there is plenty of time to chill out and you aren’t expected to be up too early so definitely a holiday to recharge the batteries. There is lots of food and always tea, coffee and squash on the table if you are chilling in the lodge.

Most Inspirational Moment

Many! But seeing the Northern Lights appear above the trees as we did the nighttime snowshoe walk in the forest was totally amazing. I also really loved the dog sledding.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sonja was brilliant. Very knowledgable, fun and nothing was too much trouble. All the staff at base camp were excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is lots to do but also plenty of down time so time to chill. The optional activities are expensive but definitely worth choosing some. I have never been skiing so had a shared ski lesson in Ruka which was definitely worth the money. If you don't want to spend too much there are walks and fat bikes too. Make use of the sauna and hot tub and do roll in the snow after jumping out the sauna it's not that bad. Also pack very light you really don't need much for the evenings.

Taste of Cuba

Hugely enjoyed this tour….. truly was an adventure.
We were introduced to an extraordinary peoples and culture….our guide was exemplary.
I luved every moment and and am extremely keen to return.
‘The Taste of Cuba’ filled every moment with fascination and surprise.
Everywhere very comfortable and safe but with a sense of how challenging it is for the locals…

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to single out one... 'growing insight into the history of past 200years The positivity of the guide..... a 'child' of the post revolution The awesome colonial architecture the enterprise of the peoples...rural and urban snorkelling in the Caribbean The delightful hospitality of the hosts in the casa particulares very little that could be left out!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

A star plus plus plus. She was so informative and prepared.... always positive and enthusiastic. The whole group thought her fabulous. For the whole week she was completely available and responsive to our needs and foibles.. a huge asset to Exodus and excellent Cuban ambassadress. In addition to the program, she researched material for further research into our family history during her free time... superb young woman!
