From no snow to lots of snow!

When we arrived in Rialp the area had seen no snow for more than a month, so the first couple of days were spent walking rather than snowshoeing. This was not necessarily a disadvantage because it enabled us to do longer walks to different villages and, at least on the first day, enjoy the sunshine! Then on Wednesday the snow arrived with a vengeance, so the snowshoes got thoroughly tested as well, often in deep virgin snow. I had no idea about the history or culture of the area and learned a lot from our leader, Miguel, during the week. The local wine and cheese sampling sessions he laid on for us were also much appreciated!

Most Inspirational Moment

Enjoying the views and snowshoeing for miles without seeing any other people.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Miguel is a very friendly and knowledgeable guide. On one or two occasions he headed off a little too fast (the group left my husband and me behind in a cafe on the first day - luckily we managed to work out where they had gone and catch up!) but 14 is quite a large group to have only one leader. He willingly gave up his free day to lead us on a very enjoyable additional walk, even if we did need to up the pace towards the end in order to catch the bus back to Rialp! He was also very flexible as the weather conditions required.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't expect this to be an easy trip, with or without snow - but it is a good combination of activity and culture in a really fascinating area.

Should be on everyone’s bucket list

This is a trip every Exodus traveller should do! So many different activities in a week based at the wonderful Oulanka Basecamp with its great facilities, gear and staff. The day light is short but you sure make the most of it and have plenty of time to unwind and relax. Laugh at yourself as to try and tackle most things that you would have never tried before but after a taster would want to do most of them as holidays in themselves- husky sledging, snow shoe walking, cross country skiing and driving a skidoo. The final day in the enchanted snow covered National Park of Riisitunturi is one I will never forget as one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to! Did not see the Northern Lights which would have put the icing on the cake but will just mean I will have to come again! Everyone seems to do the Petra trip but I suggest this is a most do trip too.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Husky sledging and the snow shoe walk in Riisitunturi.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Elena was a brilliant guide and leader and supported by all the team at the camp! They were all so enthusiastic, professional and fun and clearly love what they do.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you do the river floating do not wear your glasses as they like the clothes you are provided with freeze! You hardly need to take a thing as the gear they provide is better than the gear I have and I am a real wimp in the cold! Take plenty of good socks, hipflask, buy duty free as my bar bill was horrendous ( my own fault but enjoyed it all!), if your clothes get wet of sweaty dry them out on the floor of your room with underfloor heating! No soaps etc in rooms so take your own!

Book it!

We have just returned from the most stunning 2 weeks in Sri Lanka. The trip is extremely well planned with interesting trips spaced between the cycling. The cycling is manageable – but be warned DAY 5! It is an extremely tough climb – and even the fittest amongst our fabulous group found it very tough.

If you are lucky enough to have Wasantha as your leader, you will be spoilt. He is so knowledgeable, helpful and organised and nothing was too much trouble. Our group was very lively and he never got annoyed at having to repeat himself!

We were blessed with perfect weather (be warned its v humid). Hotels mostly very good. Food is great and never ending. Many in our group had done quite a few Exodus cycling trips but voted this very highly.

Most Inspirational Moment

The trip to the tea plantation was very interesting, as was the Spice Garden visit. Seeing wild elephants on the safari was also a highlight

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wasantha went above and beyond. A lovely man who worked tirelessly to ensure our trip was a success.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are fit for the climb on Day 5. Don't bother to bring dollars. Just change pounds at the airport.

challenging, but great

great mix of types of activities. culture, geography, local colour and adventure. some aspects quite physically demanding. needs a couple of extra days to make a bit more relaxed

Most Inspirational Moment

temple caves at Dambulla,, Polonnaruwa and Kandy. also white water rafting

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic! very organised, caring and knowledgeable

Advice for Potential Travellers

get more info on Horton Plains - its tougher than it sounds - plain is far from flat and the route is rough pathways. I only made it with extra support from the tour leader!

Amazing!

What a hard, rewarding experience… although Kili is not the prettiest of mountains it is certainly a mighty challenge… and withholds its beauty till summit day sunrise. The porters enabled summiting to be possible with their tireless support and encouragement.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the summit after 8 1/2 hrs of climbing...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Abraham was brilliant, quite guenounely we could not have done it without the support and care of the porters. I know Abraham has done this many times but he rejoiced in our success.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Respect the impact of altitude and weather... I have done many treks and knew this would be tough. When nothing else was left it was a mental strength that’s got us up.

Varied and interesting trip

Well organised tour and great tour leader and with plenty of activities and reasonable accommodation. Offers lovely scenery and some challenging hikes, recommended!

Most Inspirational Moment

Hike up Adam's Peak

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you're fit!

AN UNFORGETABLE TRIP LIKE NO OTHER EXPERIENCED

When my husband suggested cycling in India, I was to say more than a bit apprehensive but having returned from this 2 week trip I have to say that I have had one of the best experiences of my life that I could possible ever have. The contrasts when cycling were incredible – from the quiet undulating roads through stunningly beautiful tea plantations in the Western Ghats to super busy streets with buses, tuk-tuks, motor cycles, bicycles and cows to navigate around! The cycling itself was of a reasonable challenge with a few ascents but the bikes provided were of a high standard with good gearing and suspension so absorbing some of the “bumpy roads” making the ride enjoyable and rewarding at the same time. The distances cycled on a daily basis varied and even on the longer days (100 km) these were broken up with food stops/rests so nothing felt overly difficult. The food was another highlight and stopping at local “cafes” which were most definitely not on the usual tourist route a great experience and we tried so many new and delicious delicacies cooked at times on open fires by the most friendly of cooks. The accommodation on the whole was a very pleasant surprise with the standard a lot higher than we expected. All the places provided excellent breakfasts and dinners so the main issue was of NOT putting on weight! Finally, whilst the main focus was to cycle from coast to coast, on each and every day there were different cultural sights / experiences to partake of and so allowed us to see and appreciate this beautiful part of India. If you are thinking of doing a cycle trip that allows you a wealth of new experiences and adventures then do NOT hesitate to do this trip as you will not be disappointed.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling in Tamil Nadu and when we passed the schools, the children in their beautifully presented uniforms would come rushing to wave to us and smile as we rode past. They made us feel so welcome. Also when we stopped, people were again very welcoming and wanted to have photographs with us and know all about us. The friendliness of the people, who themselves have very little, were so smiley and happy that it made you feel very humble.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader Shekar was outstanding! From the moment we met him in Pondicherry to waving us off at Cochin airport, he could not have done more to make this trip so special for our group. He was extremely organised, knowledgeable and listened to what our group wanted and adapted the trip accordingly as he genuinely cared about us having a memorable time in his country. We felt very safe under his direction and he took full control so that when we arrived/departed different places we only had to worry about riding our bikes. He was very friendly and sociable, and worked tirelessly to ensure we had a fantastic trip. In this, he was supported by Abi, Kurian and Franklin and as a team they worked extremely well together so that all of our wants and needs were catered for. Could not ask for any more from any member of this fantastic team.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Cycling in India is unlike any other cycling that I have ever done! However, the team looking after us ensured we were safe so listen to what the leader tells you to do and follow any such instructions from the team guiding. On the roads do not hesitate - ride with confidence and you will be fine. Accept that parts of India have real rubbish/pollution problems, but try to see beyond this and in areas like Kerala a real effort is being made to make the region a plastic free zone. Also, embrace every new experience - there are so many - and enjoy every moment of such a trip that will leave everlasting memories.

Port Elizabeth to Cape Town

Lots of good food.
Great accommodation.
Fabulous photo opportunities.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being among about 200 elephants at a wallow in the Addo Elephant Reserve.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Justin was absolutely great. Very knowledgeable about many facets of South Africa. And an ornithologist! Everything was as expected and more. We never stopped for fuel. It just happened. The bus was always clean and tidy. A top notch guy. Superb driver.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just do it. Get on with it. Time is wasting.

Great trip

A really full trip. Travelling to areas remote and beautiful with plenty of scenery and wildlife.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing primary rain forest and the way conservation and tourism have been harnessed as resources.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was enthusiastic and knowledgeble. Excellent guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Enjoy.

From Saigon to Hanoi

In a party of 17 people we were led and supported by 4 incredible Exodus staff. Individually and as a team they way exceeded my expectations. Taking us places we would never have found indepently and taking so much care. We experienced the true Vietnamese way of if life and learned so much. All of the travel arrangements, hotels and cycling was faultless.

Most Inspirational Moment

Probably experiencing the extreme friendliness of the local people especially in the south.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Way exceeded expectations. Professional, communicative, hard working, nothing was too much trouble for Lam.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Decide on the bike. Exodus supply decent mountain bikes but a lighter gravel, touring or cyclo-cross bike would be even better, but you would have to take your own. Don't be tempted to take a fragile road bike though.
