Women in Farming

In 2024, we partnered with KWIECO (Kilimanjaro Women’s Information Exchange Community Organisation) who work to improve social justice through legal and economic empowerment; capacity building, advocacy to eliminate gender inequalities, awareness creation legal, human rights, gender, and legal aid provision targeting women, children and other disadvantageous groups in Tanzania.

The project we supported with KWIECO aimed to strengthen Wamboma’s sustainable social enterprise by integrating local women farmers into the tourism and hospitality sectors. Through skills training, infrastructure development, and community engagement, the initiative enhances economic opportunities while promoting gender equality and cultural preservation.

The project has implemented key activities to empower women and create a sustainable model for community- based tourism in the Kilimanjaro region, including: Capacity building – built a cultural centre for Wamboma members in Namwai village on Mount Kilimanjaro so they can receive visitors on excursions. It has also been equipped with everything necessary to host and feed guests and allowed the women to showcase local traditions, cooking experiences and tourism- related activities. Tourism development – organised meeting focused on developing and refining the excursion programme together with tour operators. Awareness programs – to ensure that women are trained and confident to proceed with hosting guests KWIECO recruited an experienced community worker, focused on women’s empowerment. The community worker helped to train the women to develop and receive tourists in their community.
