Our tours to Machu Picchu

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a path every traveller must take at least once in their lifetime. Possibly the most famous panorama and archaeological site on the planet, Machu Picchu is an intricate labyrinth of stone temples and palaces on brilliant green terraces, cradled between two dramatic peaks and surrounded by the all-consuming beauty of the Andes.

The mountains reach for the skies as cloud forests give way to sheer cliff faces, sharply descending into the deep canyon and the rushing river Urubamba far, far below. It’s famous for a reason and that’s because there’s not a soul on Earth who can fail to be impressed by the majesty of this lost Inca city in the clouds.

Our Inca Trail & Machu Picchu holidays offer something for most travellers. From a little extra comfort and super-specialist tour guides to extended trips taking in the best Peru has to offer, you can find the perfect Machu Picchu trips for you below.

First time travelling with Exodus.
One of the best trips we’ve taken. Very well organised, great tour leader and lovely company of our fellow travellers.
Every day provided wonderful experiences. Awe inspiring scenery, changing landscapes, culture and history, the people we met and sites visited were just wonderful. We travelled many kilometres and had some early starts, but the comfortable transport and laughs on the way made it worth it. We had a full on experience of this beautiful Country. Thanks to Renato, our tour leader, everything went smoothly. His pride in his country was infectious.

Carol Rosie Essential Peru

I’ve just returned from an unforgettable 15-day adventure through Peru with Exodus Travels, and I can honestly say it exceeded all expectations. The itinerary took us through some of the most iconic and breathtaking parts of the country, including the awe-inspiring Amazon Rainforest, the legendary Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and the serene and culturally rich Lake Titicaca. Along the way, we also explored a number of fascinating towns and cities that each offered their own unique character and charm.

Peru itself is an absolute gem of a destination. The landscapes are incredibly diverse — from the lush, wildlife-filled jungles of the Amazon to the dramatic peaks of the Andes and the tranquil high-altitude plains around Lake Titicaca. Every day brought a new view, a new climate, and a new surprise. The natural beauty is jaw-dropping, and the opportunities for spotting wildlife, exotic birds, and unique plant life were abundant, especially in the rainforest.

What really brought the trip to life, though, was the people. The Peruvians we met along the way were warm, welcoming, and incredibly proud of their heritage. Their traditions, art, and way of life gave real depth to the journey. The cultural experiences — from visiting local markets to sharing meals with families on the islands of Lake Titicaca — added a richness to the adventure that I’ll never forget.

A huge part of the success of this trip was down to our exceptional guide, Holger Collantes. Holger was more than just a tour leader — he was a storyteller, a cultural ambassador, a problem-solver, and a constant source of knowledge and encouragement. His passion for his country was evident in everything he did, and his deep knowledge of local history, wildlife, and customs really enhanced our experience. He made sure we were well taken care of at every stage, from coordinating logistics to offering invaluable tips and insights. Thanks to Holger, we didn’t just see Peru — we truly experienced it.

Walking the Inca Trail was a personal highlight — challenging, yes, but incredibly rewarding. The sense of achievement upon arriving at the Sun Gate and seeing Machu Picchu spread out before us was indescribable. It’s a moment that will stay with me forever. Similarly, our time in the Amazon was magical — waking up to the sounds of the jungle, taking boat trips along the river, and spotting everything from monkeys to macaws was like stepping into another world.

All in all, this trip was an extraordinary journey through one of the most beautiful and culturally rich countries I’ve ever visited. It combined physical challenge, natural beauty, and cultural immersion in a way that very few holidays can. I cannot recommend it highly enough — and if you’re lucky enough to get Holger as your guide, you’re in for a truly exceptional experience.

Hands down one of our favorite trips! Extremely well organized tour with an amazing leader. Every day was chock full of fantastic sights and awesome scenery. The Peruvian landscape, history and culture were captivating and I still can’t believe how much we experienced. There were some long days and early starts, but we loved every minute and will cherish each memory. Our fellow travelers were a great group and we shared a lot of laughs. Kudos to our leader Renzo for making this a seamless journey through his amazing country.

What are the best months to visit Machu Picchu?

If you want to get the iconic Machu Picchu photo of the archaeological site surrounded by wispy clouds set against a clear blue sky, visit during the dry season between May and October. Do be aware that early morning mist and unexpected downpours are likely to happen no matter what time of year you choose to travel!

The months of June, July, and August are also the busiest in terms of mass tourism. During these peak times, it may be difficult to freely move around the ruins on your Machu Picchu holiday. There are likely to be lines everywhere – on the way to Huayna Picchu, to access the best places for photos of Machu Picchu, and for the bathroom!

April, May, September, and October are all good shoulder season months. During this time, you’ll find smaller crowds and dry, pleasant weather, with warm days and cool nights, making these months some of the best to go on a Machu Picchu adventure holiday.

How long is the flight to Machu Picchu?

A flight from the UK to Cuzco, the nearest international airport to Machu Picchu, takes anything from 18 to 24 hours, including transfers. From Cuzco, you take a coach, train, or taxi to Machu Picchu. Don’t worry, though, as we can organise your travel plans when you book one of our Machu Picchu holidays, with flights included, to make the journey as straightforward as possible.

What to wear in Machu Picchu?

Lightweight layers are your friend when climbing Machu Picchu. The weather can change in a heartbeat, so having lightweight clothes you can remove or put on quickly is essential. You’ll need waterproof clothing and footwear too as you won’t want the extra weight of wet clothes slowing you down. Equally, you need to keep your body safe from the sun by wearing hats and long-sleeved tops and trousers.

You’ll be camping during your stay and nights can be very cold as you ascend the mountain. Pack warm pyjamas and make sure you have a thermal base layer as an added precaution too.

How high is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is 2,430 meters above sea level.

What should I pack for Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu holidays are a lot easier when you have the right gear with you. Here are the essentials items you’ll need to pack for a successful trip:

  • Passport
  • Money
  • Water
  • Insect repellent
  • Sun cream
  • Thin and breathable clothes
  • Comfortable footwear
  • Light waterproofs
  • Swimming costumes

Remember that what you pack is what you’ll have to carry up the mountain, so pack light for a much more enjoyable experience.
