6 European Adventures That Are Even Better in Late Summer

"Whether you’re embracing ‘shoulder season’ travel or just haven’t booked yet, here’s where you should go in August and early September"

The sea is still warm enough for an evening swim. Mountain trails are less crowded. Restaurant terraces stay busy as conversations stretch long into the balmy night.

Late summer – roughly August to early September in Europe – is when many destinations are at their best for an adventure.

If you haven’t yet booked your trip for this year, here are six of the best late summer adventures in Europe. And if you fancy stretching out summer even further, we’ve added our suggestion for a great city break extension, too.

1. Walk Beneath the Peaks of the Dolomites

Classic Dolomites Hikes - Premium Adventure

In late summer, when the alpine meadows are still bright with colour, the Dolomites rival any mountain range for sheer drama.

On our Dolomites walking holidays, experienced walking leaders guide you through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Italy’s northern mountains.

The reward isn’t only the scenery, but knowing exactly when to pause, where to look, and which quieter paths reveal the best perspectives.

Trails weave through alpine meadows flecked with late-summer wildflowers, while mountain huts provide welcome stops for homemade strudel and strong coffee.

You’ll also walk in the shadow of the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo, three vast limestone towers rising above the trail – they’re among the most iconic sights in the Alps but seeing them on foot is something else entirely.

Back in the town of Villabassa, our home base is Hotel Adler, a 400-year-old Tyrolean property where boots are swapped for slippers, hearty local dishes appear at dinner, and the mountains remain in view from the terrace.

Venice scenery

Extend in Venice

After days among soaring peaks and open skies, Venice invites you to slow the pace. Late summer evenings are ideal for wandering the quieter corners of the city, when the temperature has cooled and locals gather in neighbourhood bacari (rustic wine bars) for cicchetti (small plates) and wine. Beyond the famous sights lie hidden churches, peaceful campi (public squares) and narrow waterways where the only sound is water against the stone – perfect for putting up your feet and soaking it all in.

2. Cycle Portugal’s Atlantic Coast

Cycling Porto to Lisbon

Late summer is one of the finest times to ride Portugal’s western shore. Atlantic breezes soften the warmth of the day, while fishing villages, nature reserves and sweeping coastal views provide a constant excuse to stop and look around.

Cycling from Porto to Lisbon, one of the highlights is crossing the São Jacinto Natural Reserve, where wooden boardwalks cut through dunes and wetlands rich with birdlife.

Further south, the medieval town of Óbidos sits behind some of the best-preserved town walls in Portugal. Wander the cobbled streets, browse independent craft shops and pause for a glass of locally made ginjinha (a sour cherry liqueur) before getting back in the saddle.

After following Portugal’s coastline on two wheels, Lisbon offers a different side of the country.  Late summer evenings see locals gathering in squares and on terraces across Alfama and Bairro Alto, while the lookout points (or miradouros) fill with people watching the light fade across red rooftops and the Tagus River. Ride Tram 28 through the historic centre and linger over petiscos (Portuguese small plates) in the streets around Chiado.

3. Follow Forgotten Trails Through Andorra

Andorra Valley of Pessons

Late summer often brings crystal-clear views from the Pyrenean peak of Casamanya, considered the geographical heart of Andorra. On a clear day, the surrounding peaks seem to unfold in every direction, revealing the remarkable scale of one of Europe’s smallest countries.

Some of Andorra’s most rewarding paths lead towards panoramas like these. They slip through flower-filled valleys, skirt glacial lakes and climb high into the Pyrenees.

Our local guides reveal routes you might never discover on your own, including a Second World War trail through the Valle de Incles. Along the way, you’ll pass grazing horses, hear the whistle of marmots and experience a side of Andorra that many visitors never see.

Park guell barcelona

Trade Andorra’s quiet valleys for a city designed to be lived outdoors. In late summer, locals fill waterfront promenades, while the festival season brings concerts, street performances and celebrations into public spaces. As the light softens, viewpoints such as Montjuïc and Park Güell offer golden-hour views across the rooftops and out towards the Mediterranean, revealing why this is one of the most atmospheric times to experience the city.

4. Hike the Quieter Greek Island of Evia

Walking in Evia,Greece

Greece’s second-largest island remains surprisingly overlooked. On Evia, old stone footpaths wind through forests scented with pine and wild herbs before descending towards hidden coves washed by the Aegean Sea. It’s the Greece of old, the one you always wished to find – surprisingly quiet, raw and rural.

Walk through the Gourna villages, explore the Acropolis of Styra and follow mountain routes towards the rugged east coast and the scattered Aegean archipelagos. With sea temperatures remaining pleasantly warm well into late summer, there’s every reason to end the day with a swim before settling into a waterfront taverna.

In late summer, the city comes alive after dark, with rooftop terraces filling beneath the illuminated Parthenon and locals gathering in squares that have been at the heart of Athenian life for generations.

5. Journey Beyond Iceland’s Golden Circle

Iceland

Many visitors see Iceland through a handful of famous stops. Travel beyond them and the island feels infinitely larger.

In late summer, near-endless daylight makes it easier to appreciate just how much of Iceland lies beyond the most famous sights. Long days allow for a more leisurely journey around the island, with time to enjoy the changing landscapes and remote corners that many visitors never reach.

Take the time and you’ll see how much variety lies beyond the Golden Circle. From the black sands of Reynisfjara and the icebergs of Jökulsárlón to the remote Eastfjords and the volcanic landscapes surrounding Lake Mývatn, each day will show you a completely different side of Iceland.

6. Discover the Balkans Between Mountains and Sea

Mostar

With the Adriatic still warm enough for a swim and cooler temperatures returning to the mountains, late summer is an ideal time to experience the Balkans from coast to highlands in a single journey.

One day you could be cruising across the Bay of Kotor towards Perast, exploring Venetian palaces and island churches; the next, standing above the depths of Tara Canyon or wandering the cobbled streets of Mostar’s Ottoman old town. Higher in the mountains, villages such as Lukomir and Podgora remain active as summer begins to give way to autumn, offering a glimpse into traditions that have shaped life here for generations.
