Cycling Vietnam April 2017

One of the best holidays I have had, although very hot at times for cycling, best when we were on the move. The scenery is wonderful and great to see it from the bike. Bikes were of a good standard, but take your own saddle and pedals if you can.

Most Inspirational Moment

The descent from the stop after Dalat, scenery was awesome, the climb and descent on Hai Van Quan was impresive, very hot and most of the group made it - impressive.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thang was excellent, worked hard to ensure everyone got a lot out of the holiday.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take your own saddle and pedals. Do not get sun burn snorkling on Whale Island. The insects were not nearlr as bad as we expected.

Delhi to Kathmandu

A fantastic adventure from start to finish. India was hot, dirty, crowded and chaotic. It was a riot of colour, noise and amazing photo opportunities! Nepal was slightly less chaotic and provided a wonderful contrast to the madness.

Most Inspirational Moment

Both morning and evening trips on the Ganges were incredible. Not for the faint-hearted, we watched cremations on the banks of the river. We loved Chitwan even though we didn't see the elusive tiger. We went paragliding in Pokhara which was great fun.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ronit was a great leader. We were a very small group, just four of us and Ronit. We got on extremely well and Ronit just made everything easy. He was knowledgable, informative and fun. He made navigating the chaos easy, getting us on to the train for our overnight trip, getting us tuktuks and rickshaws and adding his own experiences that he thought we would enjoy such as taking us to the Sikh temple in Delhi where we made roti, stopping at the brick factory, walking over a suspension bridge on the way to Pokhara and taking us to eat street food at a stall in Agra.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is not a relaxing holiday. It is an adventure. Be prepared for long journeys on terrible roads. There is always something to see but you will spent a lot of time on the road. There are also some early starts. The standard of driving, generally, is not great. It was particularly dusty in Kathmandu. Some of the hotels are quite basic. Be prepared for sights you would not see in the UK. Embrace the chaos and you will have an amazing time!

Amazing trip

Our trip was amazing, can’t believe we did so much! Leaving the hotel by 8 each morning we seemed to do a week’s worth of adventure in one day! Our guide was brilliant, he was informative, fun and had great English. The hotels were much better than I expected, the one in Hoi An was particularly good.

Most Inspirational Moment

We went to a local house for a meal. Not only was the food the best of the whole trip but it was really interesting to meet the family and to gain some understanding of their way of life.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was excellent. I don't think he could have been improved upon. Clone him!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do it!

Almafi coast

A brillant holiday. Amazing views. Some walks are harder than others for example. Good. Path of God’s you really do need a head for heights and be prepared to doing some mini rock climbing.
The accommodation was brillant. The owners are lovely the food was amazing. The great location. A nice quiet area instead of being in the hustle and bustle of almafi town.

Most Inspirational Moment

The views, the food and having a good local guide to show us the almafi coast.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Severio was great very knowledgeable and great to have a local person doing the job.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take Plenty of money with you. It's an expensive area. Take good walking shoes/boots and be prepared to be walking up and down loads of steps.

Touring Peru

Never a dull day, so much to see. Even on the chill out days we took on the optional tours just to maximize the experience. It’s a great place and the areas are so diverse from the coast, desert, mountains to the cloud forest.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were lots of them but the build up was all about summiting with Macchu Picchu, initially disappointing, too many people, too many clouds totally obscuring the view and it rained. That was the morning in the afternoon the crowds cleared out, the skies also cleared so we had sunshine and Macchu Picchu to ourselves, well almost, it certainly felt like that.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Aleks was a great guide, he kept everything on track, what more do you need from a guide?

Advice for Potential Travellers

Before taking Essential Peru on please consider the following: - It is no holiday, early starts, different location every night and loads of places to visit really mean there is little rest time. - It's a very big country which means many miles to cover which clearly means you will spend a lot of hours on the bus - Much of the trip is at altitudes most of us do not regularly experience, you maybe fit and will no doubt acclimatize but nonetheless any exertion will be hard work, so bear that in mind. - When the sun comes out it is fierce so make sure you have plenty of lotion. - The ATMs generally work but we found a lot of them to have a S400 limit which only equates to £100. You can change up Sterling but US dollars are the preferred currency.

Costa Rica family adventure - fantastic

The trip was an excellent way to see a sample of the best bits of Costa Rica. We had an excellent guide (Jorge) , who managed to find loads of animals and birds for us to watch.

Most Inspirational Moment

For me, this was being in the cloud forest and rain forest - being able to see all those things you have heard about on nature programs and geography lesson!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jorge was a superb leader. He was very knowledgable about the country, the wildlife and the places we visited . He was really good at considering and involving the children and teenagers. Restaurant choices were good value and suitable for our family group. Jorge was very friendly and considerate. I would like to thank him for his excellent tour and personal dedication.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Guidebook temperatures are only that - a guide. We travelled in early April and temperatures were over 30 degrees C. Mosquito repellent is important . Drink bottled water. Do go if you can as it is fascinating country with lots of wildlife to see.

Vietnam for Americans

As an American who grew up in the 60s, the American war in Vietnam was a painful episode in our history. The exodus trip did not shy away from some the sites that caused me some personal pain. That said, I welcomed the reflection. For me it was not a trip entirely about lounging, great food and shopping. And I am grateful to our gracious guide for that; and the amazing Brits who were my traveling companions.

Most Inspirational Moment

Taking a side trip to a war memorial in Hue. The peddle car driver opened up to us that he lost a father and uncle in the war. He was very kind about your mutual loss.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I can't say enough about Binh our leader. He let us know that all subjects were acceptable to ask questions about. He wanted to share information about his country ; political and cultural. He told us his own personal story, which reflected the hardship after the reunification of Vietnam. His honesty and kindness are qualities he did not have to share with a bunch of tourists, but he went there. The first day he called us his little family. A two week family.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The itinerary is touristy. There are masses of people at each site. There are painful reminders of the war at several places.

Walking the Great Wall

Great trip with some stunning sights however, various aspects were not up the the usual excellent Exodus standard. Safety in various places on the wall could have been improved by having another guide at the back of the group. A member of the party was asked to do this which was unfair, this was a position for Exodus to fill. Fortunately, we had a fantastic group and no one was left behind on their own. Goodness only knows what would have happened in the event of a mishap, having only one guide who was ahead and seldom waited for people to catch up.

Also, the itinerary was changed, which Exodus reserves the right to do, but we were given no explanation and very vague information on the following days walks.

The city tour was a huge disappointment as our guide gave us very little time to take pictures and did not wait for the whole group before giving information or issuing instructions.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing unrestored parts of the wall and having it all to ourselves.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nice chap but fairly unenthusiastic and very vague. Overall not up to Exodus usual excellent standard.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you're reasonably fit as there are plenty of steep climbs. Vegetarian food it quite hard to come by but what there is, is delicious.

Brilliant

I am a grandmother of 56 who went on this trip with my 7 year old grandson. It was brilliant, my grandson played in the snow all day when not on other activities. He build his own igloo, sledged and generally messed about in the snow. It is a really safe environment for children and he was never bored. Any optional excursions that he was a bit young for (snowmobiling) they catered for him by coming up with a safe alternative without us having to miss the activity i.e. The main man pulled a sledge behind his snowmobile which was safe for my grandson and also fun for him and this allowed me to take part in the snowmobiling (which was great).

Most Inspirational Moment

The area is beautiful

Thoughts on Group Leader

She was lovely and so helpful

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a scarf, it does not say to but you will need one

Fabulous!

I felt we experienced the best of Vietnam with this varied, action packed and scenic trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The two cycle climbs and descents - awesome views!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't hesitate to book, you will not be disappointed. I had 5 first hand positive referrals before booking so my bar was high and it was even exceeded.
