Beware of the of the pine processionary caterpillars!
An enjoyable and interesting insight into South Africa with varied landscapes and experiences. Three game drives at the start with lots of wildlife – elephants, lions and many other animals to see in beautiful locations. We enjoyed stunning mountain and semi-desert scenery, the wild cape coast and the city life and scenery of Cape Town.
Accommodation was good throughout the trip– clean, good facilities and well located in each location. The accommodation and food at House Martin Lodge was excellent. We used a large minibus which was spacious enough for our needs and was safely driven by our guide. Our couple of long drives but the scenery helped and regular stops were arranged.
Meals and food were varied and good throughout the trip and we were able to experience different types of South African food.
The tour had lots of highlights - an amazing trip to Schotia Game Reserve where we saw a stunning range of animals, the semi desert area of the Little Karoo around De Rust ( wonderful accommodation and food at House Martin Lodge ) and the Cango Caves, the coastal scenery at Storms River and Hermanus and the Cape Peninsula drive including the penguins, Robben Island, Table Mountain and the Waterfront of Cape Town.
Our tour driver and guide was Marco Olivier from Mask Expeditions. He made the trip run smoothly down to the very last detail and had a great sense of humour. Most travel days were broken up with adequate rest and scenic stops and even a fun quiz on the long drive. His local knowledge of nature, wildlife and the culture and history of South Africa was good and he was happy to share and discuss it with us. He was helpful with sorting the optional activities and other arrangements especially in Cape Town.
It is a pity that the Schotia Game Reserve is not an 'included' part of the tour as it is one of the 'must do' activities. Make sure that you have enough Rands at the start of the trip as it is cheaper to pay by cash rather than card. Our time in Mossel Bay was limited and rushed. If possible discuss with the group an early leaving time which would create more time - we left at 9.30am whereas 8.00am would have been better. Minor point - there is no tea / coffee / milk in the accommodation at Storms River. Worth arranging a quick 'shop' stop enroute to buy some. If you have time book an extra couple of nights in Cape Town. We enjoyed a relaxing two days in Cape Town at the end which was a great way to finish the trip.
Fantastic trip, camping most of the time allowed us to be on the heart of the wilderness. The tents are put up for you and have a camp bed and mattress . When we were at wild camps with no bathroom, a long drop was dug and a shower hung over a branch where possible. The camp food was simply excellent and the whole team looked after the group well!

Brian was a font of knowledge about everything! Made the trip special.
Read the trip notes, it is hot, you are wild camping with elephants and lions keeping there distance. The journeys are long and windy!
Mostly flat, although the long days are very hot and you feel the undulations! 3 different bikes, countries and cultures! Covering a lot of distance both in the van and cycling!
Sunrise Ankhor Wat and cycling into the vibrant celebration of Vietnamese Lunar New Year!
Seen was an excellent guide, watching over us and the team all the time. Encouraged us to try crispy tarantula!
Have a day or so In Bangkok at the start to allow to adjust for time difference and see the city.
Excellent trip with a good amount of cycling and touring. Loc was amazing, kept us fully informed. The whole team looked after us and the bikes.
Descent from Dalat! 30km downhill through stunning scenery
Loc was amazing
Book it but there are long cycling days and it is hot! Look after each other, on and off the bike!
Full on trip,in massive heat and humidity. Unfortunately our tour leader was very abrupt and rude. Fellow travellers were scared to say anything to him…basically unapproachable

Thank you for taking the time to review your Exodus trip to Costa Rica, Siobhan, although we regret that the leadership did not live up to your expectations. We acknowledge that one of the major reasons our customers choose Exodus is because we provide expert tour guides who can deliver our planned itineraries to a high standard, and ideally elevate a group’s experience in their destination. We are well aware of the impact that our leaders have on our clients’ overall enjoyment of the trip, and it is therefore a matter of great disappointment that you found your leader to be rude and unapproachable. He is a valued member of our Costa Rican cohort and has proven in the time he has led for us that he is adept at leading tours that meet ours and our customers’ expectations; we are reassured to observe that he scored an average of 4.94* across the two previous tours he oversaw this season and that he performed similarly strongly on your departure. We hope this shows why we were confident in his ability to successfully lead your tour, although we are sorry that your experience was not as positive as you had expected.

Excellent,funny and patient!
Keep your eyes peeled,so much to see and so much to miss!
Varied terrain and spectacular scenery. This trip surpassed my already high expectations!
The scenery which changed throughout the day, and every day was different.
Narcisco was passionate about guiding and preserving the wilderness in Madeira!
Difficulty of the hike was underestimated. Some members of our group struggled difficulty of several hikes.
The trip was very enjoyable. The only blip was our stay at the hotel in Monteverde…amazing views but the rooms left a lot to be desired, would not recommend. We had good food everywhere, but perhaps felt that rather than have the same menu every evening at the all inclusive hotels (except at Tortuguero) we could have gone somewhere different for dinner. All the other hotels were lovely.
excellent, we shall certainly travel again with Exodus.
Too many to single one out!
Andres exceeded all expectations. He was so knowledgeable and passionate about all aspects of Costa Rica. He was patient, empathetic and wanted us to experience as much as possible in the two weeks visit. He had a great sense if humour and spoke excellent English.
Be careful, easy to overeat! Three courses at lunch and dinner was too much!
From the initial enquiry and booking process through to the trip itself the whole experience was easy, efficient and generally in line with the high standard I have experienced on my two previous Exodus trips. The hotels and eating places were generally of a good standard, clean and comfortable. Our guide/trip leader went above and beyond to ensure the trip went to plan and all arrangements worked as expected. He made sure we all had the best possible experience and was enthusiastic and keen to show us the best of his country. He dealt calmly and efficiently with any unforeseen events, kept us safe and was always available to help and support us all with anything we needed. The four support staff were also excellent, always smiling and ensured we never wanted for anything, including bike support, water and snacks at every stop. A slight black mark was that several of the ebikes seemed quite old and a bit unreliable and a few broke down a few times which made extra work for the leader and bike support guys, who were already working incredibly hard. They dealt with the problems well though and it didn’t really detract from the overall experience due to their efforts. I would highly recommend this trip (but if you intend to rely on an ebike be prepared for a few issues).
There are a couple - Cycling past all the kids in the villages who clapped and waved at us and seemed genuinely happy to see us. Reaching the coast towards the end of a hot and sticky couple of weeks and getting into the wonderful Indian Ocean.
Suresh worked very hard to make the trip a success, personally made sure the hotel staff delivered great service and ran the cycling and excursions in a very well organised manner. He was also knowledgeable and shared with us information about the country, its history and local insights. A very professional leader who made sure everyone in the group felt part of the team.
Some of the cycling is pretty challenging with some long climbs in the heat. You do need to make sure you have a good level of cycling fitness although there is the ebike option which I took just to make life a bit easier and meant I could enjoy the holiday a bit more without worrying about the climbs or having the odd gin & tonic of an evening! And a minibus follows us the whole way so there is always the option to hop in the bus for part of the journey if it does get too much.
