    MV Adventure

    Meals included: Dinner
  • Days 2-4

Explore the Sea of Cortez and discover abundant marine wildlife.

We spend the next three days exploring areas in the Sea of Cortez. We hope to snorkel in crystal clear waters with an amazing diversity of undersea life, kayak through mangrove lagoons, over coral reefs and in quiet bays, and go ashore to explore various islands. Some of the islands we hope to include are Isla Espiritu Santos, Isla San Francisco, Isla San Jose, Isla Partida and Isla Santa Cruz.

The Sea of Cortez is known for its abundance of marine life. We hope to observe and interact with some of the largest whales on earth, marvel at the antics of hundreds of dolphins as they escort us on our journey, explore a sea lion habitat where males jostle for dominance and females nurture their young, and discover an array of birdlife that can be found wading, nesting and feeding along the shoreline.

On this departure we will be joined by world renowned Whale shark scientist, Dr. Deni Ramirez Macias, who grew up with a passion for Whale sharks and the goal of protecting these amazing giants. On this expedition we will be offering you the chance to assist in the collection of data on Whale sharks in the area. The research consists of photo identification, gender identification, noting scars, measuring dorsal length and overall length, and, when applicable, tagging the Whale sharks.

On our final day we arrive back in La Paz in the early evening and anchor here for the night.

Sea of Cortez Whale Shark departure

This is a superb trip and we packed a lot into the 3 days, from snorkelling in clear waters to a fishing village visit and from swimming with whale sharks and sea lions to kayaking along looking at the interesting rock formations. The waters were warm and clear, the sunrise and sunsets were spectacular and we were lucky enough to be there at full moon, so had moonrise too...and mobular rays swimming in the moonlight.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

When the Orcas came to play by the boat at breakfast on the first day, flipping onto their backs to clap fins and tail for us with white belly up. They were certainly performing for us....as were the sea lions on the last day, when they 'danced' below us and came to look directly into the video camera lens.

What did you think of your group leader?

Lela, the group leader from Panterra Eco Expeditions was inspiring and passionate about the wildlife. She was always enthusiastic, highly knowledgeable and an extremely friendly person...we felt welcome and valued from the moment we stepped aboard.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared for a busy schedule as a lot was packed into the short 3 day trip but everything is, of course, optional. The trip is based around snorkelling so make sure you have had a practice and are confident in the water...to get the most from the trip, some serious swimming may be needed to keep up with the whale sharks at times!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

TAKE AN UNDERWATER CAMERA. A video helps take home some amazing memories. Also, commendations to all the crew, who were friendly and helpful...and the chef was AMAZING (even making a cake on his BBQ!)
