Simien Mountains

Simien Mountains

Simien Mountains Trips

The Simien Mountains are an area of enormous natural beauty, as recognised by UNESCO who have declared the national park a World Heritage Site. The isolated splendour of the rocky plateaus and deep gorges are a major feature of this sensational region. In addition, Simien Mountains tours will reveal a rich and varied wildlife. With over 850 species of birds, 28 of them endemic to the country, this is a bird lovers' paradise. Species include the lanner falcon, wattled ibis, Tacazze sunbird, and lammergeyer vulture.

Indigenous animals found in the mountains include the Ethiopian wolf, gelada baboon and Walia ibex. Indeed, the Walia ibex lives only in the Simiens and the park was initially set up to protect this rare creature. On the flora front, giant lobelia, red-hot pokers and Euphorbia candelabrum are abundant in parts of the Simiens.
