Adventure Holidays in Botswana

Botswana is a vast, sparsely populated country, mostly desert but with the most prolific wetlands in Africa. Holidays in Botswana are thrilling, and it's well worth the effort required to reach some of its more remote places. The reserves of Chobe, Savuti, the prolific Moremi and the unique Okavango Delta are sensational, both in the summer, for birds especially, and in the dry autumn, winter and spring months, for bigger game. It is the largest elephant corridor in the world and the herds along the Chobe River can number in their thousands. The Okavango is the biggest inland delta anywhere; paddling through its reed-lined channels in a Mokoro (dugout canoe), watching the pristine wilderness slip by, is a most memorable experience.

In focus: Botswana safari holiday

Botswana is home to the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta. Its swampy depths buzz with life; these wetlands have a heavy, slow energy, and are home to countless animal species, including hippos, crocodiles and elephants. There’s no light pollution in this place; the milky way is visible on a clear night.

Probably the least intrusive way to go on safari is in a dugout canoe on the Okavango Delta, and it's also one of the most exciting ways to go wildlife spotting. Your traditional Mokoro is not only how people have travelled here for centuries; it also leaves no pollution or erosion in its wake as you glide along the natural waterways. Elephants, giraffes, hippos and all kinds of birf life abound on this wetland, and canoe is a swift and quiet means of moving through the landscape. Creatures great and small will voluntarily wander down to drink as you pass, completely undisturbed by your presence. Monochrome Pied kingfishers are so at ease that they’ll dart right up to your vessel, tiny acrobats to rival Olympic athletes and just as entertaining to watch. So not only will the wildlife be better off, but you’ll have a better safari too.

Take me there: The Okavango Delta
