Adventure Holidays to Andalucia

Andalucia’s got a touch of both the angel and the devil about it. On one hand you’ve got the Costa crowd chasing sun and San Miguel, and on the other the culture club - celebrating the exquisite Moorish art and architecture of grand cities like Granada and Seville. Sitting between you have the pull of some simply incredible scenery: the Sierra Nevada with its soaring vistas and stunning sierras, and the rolling plains of rich greens in the Guadalquivir valley. Throw into the mix the cities of Cordoba, Seville and Granada with its fantastic Alhambra Palace and the temptation to get out and explore the region almost becomes too much.

And that’s not even touching on the extreme pressures you will be put under by the food and drink - best in this case to give in gracefully and feed your inner gourmet. No Spanish region can boast quite such diversity. Andalucia has all the right ingredients for a perfect adventure holiday.

Adventure Holidays in Andalucia: The Highlights

1 Walk the Sierra Nevada

Come sun or snow, the Sierra Nevada is the place to take a walk on the wild side. Europe’s second highest mountain range after the Alps, the Sierra Nevada boasts wild, rugged mountains, fertile valleys and oak and chestnut forests - all begging to be discovered on foot.

During the summer months, the hidden valleys of the Alpujurran foothills are alive with almond groves and fruit trees bearing figs, pomegranates and apricots. Whitewashed villages dot the hills between gushing streams and green gorges.

In the winter, trekking holidays in Spain afford fantastic views from the snowy heights of the Nevada across the landscape. Walking through the crisp, clean mountain air with bright blue skies all around, the views down towards the coast are immense. And from the slopes of Mulhacen, the highest peak, you can even see the North Africa coastline.

2 Visit cliff top Ronda

Ronda oozes charismatic charm. The old town, perched on top of the El Tajo cliffs, is famous for its dramatic views. Cut in half by a steep gorge 120m deep, the two sides of the town are straddled by three spectacular viaduct-like bridges.

3 Kick back in Seville

Andalucia is renowned as the home to fiestas, flamenco and most things fun-loving. Seville, the capital, is regarded as the spiritual stable from which that particular horse bolted and ran riot across the rest of the country. If you’re lucky to be here at fiesta time you will have a ball.

If you’ve ever been to Spain before, then you will know one thing: the Spanish know how to party. Seville, like many Spanish towns and cities, comes alive at night. Everywhere the sights, sounds and smells will tantalize you. Take a stroll through the Barrio de Santa Cruz, admire the floodlit majesty of the Alcazar, broach a barrel in one of the cities many bars - whatever it is you do you can’t but help soak up the heady atmosphere. And if you don’t make it to bed, you will realise that Seville is equally beguiling during the daytime.
