    CUBA: LA ISLA GRANDE

A really good introduction to this fascinating island and its people - the trip was full of variety from trekking to Castro's mountain hideout, wandering the streets of Trinidad, exploring Havana, snorkelling over coral, listening to music and trying to learn to salsa - highly recommended!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Definitely trekking in the Sierra Maestra up to Castro's hideout.  Not only were the views amazing but it was incredible to see where they had lived and how they had operated - made the history come alive.

What did you think of your group leader?

Enio was one of the best tour leaders I have ever had.  His knowledge was incredible and he never tired of answering our questions on every aspect of Cuba and its culture (despite a lousy cold).  He was always one step ahead and seemed to secure us the best table in a palador or get us to a site before other coaches.  All this, combined with his endless enthusiasm, good humour and determination that we see as much as possible whilst never rushing us really made the trip memorable.  Together with Francisco our driver, they would be a hard act to beat!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Go with an open mind - be prepared for occasional changes to schedules - and avoid gate no 10 at pasport control at the airport when entering or leaving Cuba - it's the gate they use for Cuban nationals or passengers requiring assistance and can mean people are forever being brought to the front of the queue!  Going on the Vinales excursion did mean people missed out on a day's sightseeing in Havana - I'd definitely recommend adding on a couple of extra days if possible, or forfeiting Vinales for a day in Havana - otherwise you see very little of this incredible city.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Can't wait to go back!
