Regimented and over ambitious tour

This tour tries to squeeze too much in order to combine the Rockies and the coast, when in reality the two should be visited separately. This tour should be ditched as a badly conceived concoction. Accommodation was frequently substandard and, on one occasion, overcrowded. In addition, the cramped minibus was very uncomfortable for the long journeys involved. Unless Exodus sorts all this out I would recommend you avoid this trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were some really great experiences, like the glacier walk and the orca boat trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very good and extremely hard working and concern for the needs of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip falls well below the standards I would expect of Exodus.

CANADA WILDLIFE AND VANCOUVER ISLAND

THERE WAS A LOT OF TRAVELLING AS YOU STATED BUT THE BUS WAS ONLY JUST BIG ENOUGH FOR 13 TRAVELLERS. tHE ACCOMMODATION WAS MOSTLY VERY GOOD..WE WERE ALL DISAPPOINTED BY THE ABSENCE OF WILDLIFE IN SOME AREAS SUCH AS BELL A CCOLA.

Most Inspirational Moment

SEEING THE MAJESTIC ROCKY MOUNTAINS CLOSE UP

Thoughts on Group Leader

MARIE WAS VERY EFFICIENT AND HARD WORKING.

Advice for Potential Travellers

BE PREPARED FOR SOME EARLY STARTS AND LONG DAYS TRAVELLING

Suggestions

I WOULD HAVE ENJOYED THE HOLIDAY MORE IF WE HAD HAD A BIGGER AND MORE COMFORTABLE BUS.

A broad introduction to western Canada

The highlights of this trip speak for themselves and were excellent – we particularly enjoyed Maligne Gorge near Jasper, walking at Lake Louise, walking on Athabasca Glacier, the ferry from Bella Coola to Vancouver Island, the raft trip, the whale watching trip and the optional sea kayaking. However, Canada is vast, so don’t underestimate the time you spend travelling. There are a number of VERY long days in the minibus, which can be quite cramped if it is full to capacity. With a maximum of 2 nights stay in any one location, you are always either unpacking or packing, and with various early starts it is quite a tiring holiday. What it does do is give you a great overview of this area of the Rockies and Vancouver Island. There were some great locations worthy of spending more time in, perhaps in future

Most Inspirational Moment

Spending time with wild Orca off the coast of Vancouver Island. The weather was calm and the sea was flat - it was absolutely magical seeing the long dorsal fins break the surface of the water

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marie-Josee was great- we think this was a hard trip for a tour guide- it was a full two weeks with long drives, cooking and food preparation, but she was brilliant, well organised and helpful. We encountered a problem at the Nimpo Lake lodges- initially 8 of us were booked into one lodge, and although technically there were 8 beds, the group sleeping, seating and bathroom facilities were not really big enough (perhaps they would have been suitable for a family group). Marie-Josee listened to the group's comments and got another 2 rooms organised as soon as she could.

Bears, whales and a whole lot more!

We were really lucky with the wildlife side of the trip, we didn’t see a grizzly but that was probably because on a walk we saw one was in the immediate vicinity and we wisely left! A moose also did not make an appearance but we were blessed with a wealth of black bears (with babies), dolphins, humpback whales etc.
Scenery was a major highlight so even on the longer bus journeys you are always seeing something new. Lots of good walks.
We are regular travellers with Exodus and know what to expect and this trip didn’t fail, we had a great time, blessed with a brilliant guide and excellent fellow travellers.

Most Inspirational Moment

The wildlife. Two zodiac trips are included and we did book an extra eco raft trip in Bella Coola which is highly recommended. With the long ferry trip and the orca viewing zodiac trip you'd be pretty unlucky not to see whales so personally wouldn't book an additional whale watching trip. We didn't see orca but boy were we thrilled at the humpback whales feeding around us!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mariejo was our guide and she was excellent and saved our holiday when Air Canada decided our suitcases would remain at Heathrow for a couple of days!. Full of relevant information, well organised with maps and books for us to read up on things etc. Gave clear advice and with a whatsapp group set up a 6.25am reminder of time to depart, what we are doing and importantly a local weather forecast for the day.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The trip notes need updating on everyday costs as they are probably 3 years out of date and it proved much more expensive but we were eating really good food. Some places offered bbq areas, your guide should warn you if you need to consider getting food, to save money and stop waste talk amongst yourselves and have a party! Be warned the minibus is small so with a full group, ours wasn't, it is going to get very crowded so if you are a person who likes a ton of space, needs every gismo you own with you on the bus then this may not suit you. Obviously wildlife opportunities vary on when you go but beware June/July for mozzies. Covering up and spray helps but in Tweedsmuir they were a bit vicious and of course at toilet stops you are rather exposed!

Suggestions

Canada, like everywhere else is opening up after a long lock down and there are staff shortages so lots of restaurants are restricting numbers and times or aren't open at all; this did cause a few issues, nobodies fault, but if you are a regular traveller on this type of the trip you know you have to be flexible.

Canadian Rockies

The trip was very enjoyable and our tour leader Simon was very pleasant and organized. He was very positive and enthusiastic about all aspects of the trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Canadian Rockies are incredible. It needs to be seen to be believed

Thoughts on Group Leader

Simon was very pleasant and organized. He was very positive and enthusiastic about all aspects of the trip. He made time to chat to all members of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Mosquitos repellent is a must in summer

Suggestions

Tweedsmuir Provincial Park; Anahim Lake; The accommodation was at Eagles Nest. They seem to have different levels of accommodation for different group members. Standard minus - no electricity and no heating. This was the accommodation assigned to me. Standard - with electricity and fridge. Assigned to some members of the group. I asked for an upgrade to a room with electricity as other group members had. But was told that I needed to pay $47 for the upgrade. I did pay the surcharge and got a better room. My view is that all group members should be given the same type of accommodation.

Stunning Scenery

I enjoyed the trip and the scenery of the areas visited is stunning.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking on the glacier and the ferry trip up the Inside Passage (long but well worth it) were the highlights for me.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alex was excellent and worked hard to ensure that all members of the group had options for activities suitable for them.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is an active holiday with opportunities to go hiking - I'm not sure this was clear to some of the people booking through different companies onto the holiday so adjustments had to be made for them by to group leader.

Suggestions

The itinerary followed was not exactly as described in the trip notes - a visit to Lake Louise and Lake Moraine were done on the day the notes said we would go to Banff and the visit to Banff took place prior to driving to Calgary. It was good to see the lakes and have to opportunity to do some walking but this needs to be changed on the trip notes. It would be good to have some more time in Banff to explore the town.

CANADIAN ROCKIES & VANCOUVER ISLAND

An amazing and diverse active trip with fabulous scenery and wildlife.

Most Inspirational Moment

Lake Moraine was my trip highlight, I have never seen colours like that anywhere in my life.

Thoughts on Group Leader

She is probably the best tour leader I have ever had.  This was my first exodus trip but I have used many other operators and she by far surpassed my expectations.  She was fun but serious when she needed to be, direct and as helpful as she could be, not to mention strong (a very handy requirement given the weight of my case!).

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare for extreme temperatures at both ends of the spectrum.  When the sun is shining on you it is very hot but otherwise very cold.

Suggestions

Just that I couldn't recommend this trip enough.  I have been eager to go to Canada for years now and this trip absolutely met all of my expectations.

CANADIAN ROCKIES & VANCOUVER ISLAND

This was a trip through beautiful scenery with a good mix of sights and activities

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the humpback whales near Tofino. The drive down the Icefields parkway.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Joanne was very knowledgable about the area, and was good fun.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't take too much luggage - travel light!

Suggestions

If you're thinking of doing this trip - then just go for it!

CANADIAN ROCKIES & VANCOUVER ISLAND

Mountains, glaciers, amazing blue lakes and lots of trees were on offer in abundance. Keep a sharp look-out and you might see bears and elk but you couldn’t fail to see the cheeky chipmunks and the ground squirrels. This is just the trip for the outdoor type of person.

Most Inspirational Moment

The amazing blue Peyto lake and the glacier and mini icebergs (and big fat snowflakes) at Mount Edith Cavell were some of the highlights of the trip. Pre-dawn over the bay with the tide out at Parksville gave us a magical moment. This was an unexpected hotel stop caused by the extra day spent on the ferry from Bella Coola to Port Hardy - sleeping on the floor of the ferry for the night had it's compensations!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Michel was efficient and friendly - he seemed to enjoy the trip as much as we did. He worked hard to pace the days according to the capabilities of the group and was always around for queries and questions. If he didn't know the answers to the questions, then he'd find out or lend us a book with the facts (obscure botanical questions were not his forte). When the ferry captain of the boat between Bella Coola and Port Hardy was delayed at anchor by 20 hours he and the local company worked hard to re-arrange the accommodation. This had to be done several times as the captain changed his mind about the situation and the timing of our arrival in Port Hardy. Michel consulted with the whole group and a joint decision was made to drop the night in Victoria, keeping two nights near Tofino.

Advice for Potential Travellers

ATMs - make sure you know which banks use Visa and which use MasterCard. The banks in Canada use one or the other and you can waste some time finding a bank which will accept your card. Shops and restaurants will accept either.

Suggestions

There was not much cultural content - we learnt more about the first nations and the early history from our own museum visit in Calgary than we did on the trip.

CANADIAN ROCKIES & VANCOUVER ISLAND

Good holiday but quite a lot of travel. The minibus was a little cramped.

Most Inspirational Moment

Mount Robson without clouds on its peak!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent - we had to spend 31 hours on the boat fromBella Coola to Port Hardy instead of the expected 11. Michel sorted out our hotels etc very quickly cancelling our hotel in Port Hardy and booking us into another hotel in Parkville. He made a point of consulting us as to what the group wished to do - either spend two nights in Tofino or one night in Tofino and one night in Victoris.
