An excellent all-round trip

This was my first Exodus cycling trip and I was thoroughly impressed from start-to-finish. The trip involved five 50-70km days and a 6th day which involved a morning of rest in Loutraki and an afternoon/evening of sightseeing in Athens.

We were on the road from 9am -5/6pm each day; stints of cycling along beautiful coastal or mountain roads were split up with fantastic lunches, visits to cultural sites including the theatre at Epidavros and the citadel at Mycenae, and a trip to a winery.

We ate as a group in excellent restaurants each evening, and the hotels were all comfortable. There were two nights in Athens (one at the start, one at the end), four in coastal resorts (good for swimming) and one in Mycenae, where the hotel had a pool.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling the coastal path at Nafplio!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Yannis and Kwstas did an excellent job all week. Yannis lead the group on his bike and provided plenty of insight into both ancient and modern Greek history. Kwstas followed the group in the van and proved an excellent mechanic and chef, and was v.fun to be around!

Carpathian Walking & Bears

A truly enjoyable week of varied walking and bear spotting. The Villa Hermani is comfortable (once we got the issues with heating and hot water sorted) and the food is plentiful and delicious. It was also great to have a day sightseeing at Brasov which is a very pretty place.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being in the bear hide and seeing 8 bears - one may have come more than once. The mum with two cubs was a total bonus especially when one of the cubs was trying to get onto a rock and having to have several attempts. I also really enjoyed the visit to Brasov.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thomas was a good communicator and walk leader. He gave us a lot of historical information about Romania. It was a delight to see him in his traditional Romanian costume on Friday evening.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure that you wrap up really well for the bear hide. You are sitting still for a couple of hours and it gets VERY cold. If you don't have a walking pole, there are some you can borrow at Villa Hermani - you will find a pole useful at times. Be flexible about the itinerary, we had to make some changes due to weather conditions although it didn't affect our enjoyment.

Highlights of Provence

Excellent walking holiday, beautiful scenery and flowers.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking in the Verdun Gorge alongside the river

Thoughts on Group Leader

Yves was first rate.Conscious of safety ,aware of differing abilities and experience in the group.Very knowledgeable about the history, geography, flora and fauna of the area.He gave invaluable advice about all aspects of the holiday and he was fun.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take walking poles. It is hot walking and if there is an opportunity for an early start in hot weather take it.Aix was very busy and hot, local public transport is good so spending a day somewhere quieter would be an option.

Cycling in Greece

A wonderful way to see Greece beyond just the beaches and the Acropolis – though you get those as well. Mostly it was small towns , back roads through orange & olive groves, and historical sites in the countryside. Hotels were, Athens aside, beautifully located and near-empty. Going for a swim in the sea to cool down after the day’s cycling was a regular event.
It was my first cycling holiday but I needn’t have worried. I’m someone who cycles for an average 2-3 hours per week and the pace was fine with regular stops for water and snacks. Some steep hills but they were fairly short and the bikes had 24 gears so everyone just went up them slowly. One particularly long but not steep climb on the way from Galatas to Epidavros was the worst bit.

Most Inspirational Moment

The cycle path cut into the rocky cliff along the coast from Nafplio, ending with a paddle and lunch at a shelter (from the sun!) at the far end of a sandy bay

Thoughts on Group Leader

Yiannis the group leader was great - he was a fount of knowledge about all things Greek both ancient and modern. He also led the group at just the right pace. Kostas was the mechanic, support van driver, and lunch chef. Very friendly, he and Yiannis worked well together.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Padded shorts or a padded saddle cover!

EBC May 2016

Amazing adventure with a great group of people, excellent team leader and sherpas.

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing in front of huge Himalayan peaks and down into the valleys.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Gele was excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring walking poles and use them. Bring a full facial balaclava for sleeping as the tea house bedrooms are extremely cold at night. Invest in a high quality sleeping bag. Keep the the clothes you intend to wear the next morning inside your sleeping bag for warth otherwise they will get very cold at room temperature and it is painful wearing cold clothing in the morning!

Fantastic trip

This was a fabulous trip with a great group of people and two excellent guides. The island is stunning and whilst the cycling is challenging at times , the downhill parts and the undulating terrain made the whole experience really enjoyable.
This is our fifth trip with Exodus ( first cycling one) and they seem to get better and better – using local guides has really made a difference as their passion for the area really comes through. We’d recommend this trip to anyone.

Most Inspirational Moment

Long descent, into a hidden valley with poppies in field then turned a corner to see turquoise sea in front of us.. just stunning.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Giovanni and Michele were fantastic - both excellent cyclists and their care and attention was exceptional. They made sure that everyone got something from the rides. They took time to explain about the area, the customs, the food as well as making sure that every ride was enjoyable. The evenings were always entertaining and the meals that they organised for us were wonderful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You do need to have some miles in your legs before going and being used to hills would be a distinct advantage but that said, you cycle fitter by the end of the week! Also.. pack light, it's a different hotel every night so you are living out of your suitcase.

Cycljng from Split to Dubrovnik

This is described as moderate but there are some long steep hills. Don’t let this put you off as the guide gets you all to the top. This is how you feel achievement. You can always hitch a ride in the van on the worst bit.

Most Inspirational Moment

We were not seasoned cyclists and didn't even own bikes but had gone "spinning" at the gymn. Therefore getting to the top of long hills was our great achievement.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ana Kunstek was our group leader. Ana was a strong leader and extremely organised and punctual. Because of this everything worked like clockwork. She picked great value hotels, not posh but good enough. She sought restaurants run by families to provide authentic home made food. Nothing was too much trouble q her. She had a great sense if fun and was great company. We felt safe with Ana.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are considering this holiday just do it. If the odd hill is too much get in the van for a while. Take padded cycling pants and a gel seat cover if you are softies like us. The scenery is stunning so pack your camera. We added a week in Dubrovnik after the cycling.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan was the only section of the Silk Road that I had not travelled so this trip was on my bucket list and it met my expectations. We had a lively group. Travelling was fine, as described in the trip notes, and the pace was just right. Hotel accommodation was good with excellent service. We visited all the famous sights, shopped in the bazaars, enjoyed the local food and had fun at the yurt camp. I was impressed by the friendly and enterprising. people. A memorable trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Registan in Samarkand at night. Also dancing with a happy smallholder in Khiva and chatting with families on days out at the shrines.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader was excellent. He took the role of general guide, looking after us very well, and was also our guide at each of the sites that we visited. His Engish was the best I have experienced on all my trips with a detailed knowledge of not only his country's history and culture, but also each place that we visited. He kept us amused on bus journeys with stories and was very helpful with local currency.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The trip notes cover what you need to know.

Dolomites, Lake Garda and Venice Ride

A great tour which my wife and I enjoyed immensely. This was our first bike riding tour and were unsure of what to expect but we were very pleasantly surprised. Cant wait for the next one now! The level of skill and fitness required is not high and easily completed by someone who does leisurely social riding. There was a great cross section of people with lots of fun and laughs during the rides, which continued late into the evenings at dinners.

Most Inspirational Moment

Watching my wife who does little riding thoroughly enjoying all the scenery and small historic towns, and the big grin on her face when she completed the tour.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Michele was fantastic and can't thank him enough for the way he led us through the tour. His local knowledge and enthusiasm was contagious (especially for Vicenza!), and he was always up for an early morning ride for those looking for a bit of an extra challenge. His choice of cafes and restaurants was great, along with local wines - "cin cin" (look into the eyes!)

Advice for Potential Travellers

Advice in trip notes is pretty accurate - take your own pedals and shoes if possible as they really do make the difference. Bikes are fine for the type of riding allowing you to have a good look around with ease. Take layers of clothing and a few changes - the weather was variable. Late April early May was cool in the mornings, warm during the day, then cool in the evenings. My wife arranged for an electric bike which suited her perfectly and allowed her to really enjoy the trip
