Superb and varied trip in beautiful mountains and historic cities

This was our first trip to the Balkans and we were amazed how much we were able to see in just over a week. The country has recovered exceptionally well from a very tumultuous recent history, and we felt inspired by the warmth and enthusiasm of all the BiH people we met. The countryside is pristine, with absolutely no pollution, and the walking very varied and interesting.

We all loved Sarejevo and Mostar, both fascinating and sophisticated cities.

Most Inspirational Moment

The entire group of 15 reached the summit of Maglic. The ascent included a challenging stretch just below the summit, including some scrambling and a short stretch of via ferrata, but with guidance and support from the guides we all managed this without difficulty. Watching Euro football matches in the open air Fanzone in central Sarejevo was a great experience.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eldar was brilliant at everything. It would be difficult to find anyone who knows the mountains better, he's a great team leader, all the arrangements worked like clockwork, his communication was clear and unambiguous, and he was very patient with our constant questions (as none of us spoke any of the local languages). There appeared to be no problem he couldn't solve, including repairing my sunglasses, very professionally, when the lens fell out!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get as fit as possible before you go so that you can really enjoy the superb walking on this trip. Maglic is a bit of a challenge but more than worth the effort ... Take insect repellent as the pristine, unspoilt countryside is not at all polluted by insecticides. Don't be put off by this - it's beautiful with wonderful wild flowers everywhere. BiH gets very warm - take light clothes and plenty of sunscreen.

Walking on the Greek Islands

If you want a lovely, leisurely, sunny trip with a great mixture of scenery, culture and gentle walks this is great.
There were only 9 people which was perfect.
Plenty of flexibility for free time and eating with the group or choosing to wander off on your own or in smaller groups. In June the weather was lovely, it started to get too warm for walking at the end of the week, so I skipped the last day to enjoy on the beach in Naxos.
Hotels were good standard, with pools.
The ferries can be slightly tedious, but an experience.
Great mix of 3 islands, of course whilst Santorini is touristy it is absolutely stunning.

Most Inspirational Moment

The 11km walk along the caldera from Fira to Oia on Santorini. Definitely the Wow factor, and I'm glad I learnt how to take panoramic photos as the views are gorgeous. Watching the sun go down over the sea in Naxos the last 2 evenings was lovely. The old towns on Naxos and Paros are delightful.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cecille was a warm, caring, sunny and relaxed leader. She was informative without being pushy, and just wanted us to enjoy our holiday.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If like me you have spent years doing long haul, adventurous travel and more challenging treks, then this is the perfect tonic for a different kind of European break. Surprisingly nice wine too, especially the (more expensive as is everything) white in Santorini from Assyrtiko grape. The last day travelling back is long, so if you wanted to extend a couple of nights in Naxos for beach, you might like to consider flying back from there to Athens to connect with onward flights.

Like Amalfi without the cars!

This was one of the best cycling trips I have done. Exhilarating descents, sweeping bends, beautiful coastal views and very few cars. There was an opportunity to swim in the sea every day (although the water – in early June – was very ‘refreshing’). The food was good throughout, with the best Lasagne I have ever had in Cabras.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many: Managing the steep climb up to the agriturismo, which although hard work made the dramatic ride down the next morning all the more enjoyable. Many exhilarating descents with fantastic scenery and lovely sweeping bends. Swimming off the rocks and through a cave near the hotel at Nebida and then watching the sun set over the sea during supper.

Michele was an excellent guide – everything organised very smoothly and his enthusiasm for the country was infectious (although I’m not sure every beach could really be ‘the best beach on the island’)! He was ably assisted by Ado who drove the support van and kept us supplied with refreshments including beautifully prepared fruit buffets laid out on the back of the trailer.

Advice for Potential Travellers

A couple of the days are quite challenging (but there is always the option to go in the van). Don’t forget to pack a trek towel as there are opportunities to swim during every ride.

Walking in Tuscany

This was our fifth Exodus trip and certainly one of the best. It is a beautiful area, off the beaten track with fabulous walking. The accommodation at Braccicorti is simple but the food and wine were great and the family incredibly hospitable.

Most Inspirational Moment

The whole week was wonderful but probably walking to the top of Monte Prado, the highest point in Tuscany, was the highlight. We were even joined by friendly local Labrador who accompanied us for the entire walk! We also loved the valley walk, which took us to a beautiful, walled village and other lovely places.. with several coffee stops!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sara Bull really set the gold standard! The organisation was peerless and everything ran like clockwork. The walks were well led and where necessary, fitted around the weather. Our day off had plenty of options and Sara arranged taxis and train tickets to the beautiful walled town of Lucca, well worth a visit. She also booked tables at local restaurants for our non inclusive evenings, she really looked after us. Her knowledge of the local area was outstanding and her dogs Dora and Elvis were very friendly and welcoming.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just go! It is a fabulous location and a great place to walk. It may not always be sunny so take your waterproofs and brolly alongside your sunscreen but most of our days were fine.

Cycling Cuba

It was just awesome. The best way to really appreciate Cuban culture. We had the best guide, knowledgeable, resourceful, skilled and experienced not to forget funny.

Most Inspirational Moment

seeing how ressourceful the Cuban can be. They do what they can with what they have and they are happy. Such a rich culture in such a poor country. Very inspirational.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lazaro was just the best! Never have I had a guide who could be a mechanic, dance, teach and bike like a pro. He is definetly a gem.

Advice for Potential Travellers

keep an open mind

Rodopi Mountains

Excellent trip walking in the mountains and meadows of the Rodopi mountains. Lovely family run hotel with exellent food – very welcoming.
We had a very peaceful and relaxing time in Yagodina and the walks were lovely – especially the time spent in the beautiful wildflower meadows.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking through the fantastic wild flower meadows with no one else around.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Nelli is a superb leader in all respects. Very kind and caring of her group at all times. She made our stay something special to remember. Many thanks.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just enjoy the scenery and the relaxed atmosphere.

Fantastic Tour

Great week of cycling. Our guide was excellent – his knowledge of the area was extensive and it was interesting to hear the history of sites we were visiting. The scenery was unbelievable.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing endless hills and being rewarded with outstanding views at the top!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paolo was absolutely wonderful. He has the patience of a saint! He was great at keeping his group together, stopping at just the right times, explaining the historical sites we visited ... he was fantastic! Rafael, our bike mechanic/van driver, was equally wonderful. The few problems we had with the bikes were rectified in minutes and it was always comforting knowing he was behind us. They are both very personable and we enjoyed their company.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I will say that it was hillier than I expected. If you think you've done enough hill training ... do some more.

Prosecco hills

Lovely relaxing holiday, loved the hotel and the walking was varied.

Most Inspirational Moment

Just walking with great views everywhere.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine was an excellent leader. Friendly and humorous.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Couple of steep bits - but all very doable!

A lovely place

The area, walks, weather and ambiance were great. I felt the hotel food and wine was below par – overcooked vegetables (grown by the family), not hot enough and a tired, dated menu. Not Italian food as you know it; although some of the dishes were great (eg the fish), most of it was a bit institutional.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking into Vesuvius - it was terribly windy, misty and quite chilly. But the special guide was a great enthusiast and it was great fun. Pompeii was huge and brilliant too. And swimming in the sea.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He did the basics - he was pleasant, with excellent English and a warm, generous manner. We set off on time and he looked after the slower walkers very well. However from my experience on other tours the leader often provides interesting information on history, geology, natural history or whatever. Severio didn't seem have much to share.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You don't need walking boots. Bring a swim suit. The Walk of the Gods and Pompeii was very busy and rather congested - as you might expect. Many of the walks are actually up and down steps - its like being on a step machine but uneven. Your calves might ache a bit. Avoid the wine on the table. The bottles are not much more expensive and hugely better quality.

Hidden Treasures of Jordan

We were certainly not undersold by this adventure, it allowed us to enjoy the desert scenery along the highways travelled, eating watermelon while watching the sun set in the Wadi Rum, explore historic and archaeological treasures until we were on historic overload, it allowed us to meet absolutely wonderful travel companions and eat absolutely wonderful local dishes.
Accommodations were comfortable to very comfortable. Breakfasts were adequate, with most of our meals being excellent. Our transport was very comfortable and the local driver was excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

My most inspirational moment came when I reached the Treasury for the night program ... as I sat listening to the music being performed, saw the shadow of the Treasury in the candle light and then looked up seeing the Big Dipper star constellation ... I had to pinch myself ... as I couldn't believe I was actually there ... Then again the next day when I saw the Treasury in the sunlight being able to see all the detail ... it was unbelievable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader in Jordan was Khaled. He was absolutely enjoyable, excellent in the history for each of the sites and being able to answer all questions that were asked, he was always keeping us entertained on our long drives, occasionally had a sweet treat for us to try and he always, always had a smile on his face which allowed us to enjoy all parts of the adventure.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for stairs at the sites, be prepared for the heat along with the water provided by our leader I had taken my own water bottle and I had used a wet pack that went around my neck and helped me keep cool, and do not over pack - as a hand wash was dry by the next day.
