TMB - Trekking Made Brilliant

Up with the very best walking/trekking holidays we have done. Two weeks camping, ten days well-paced walking with well-spaced free days. Our group was very mixed but gelled together very well; the weather was very mixed but mostly sunny, often hot – and when the sun didn’t shine and stuff fell out of the sky, we all found there is no such thing as bad weather – the variety just added to the atmosphere. Varied terrain, stunning views and just the right level of challenge.

Most Inspirational Moment

The whole thing! The day over Grand Col de Ferret from Switzerland into France when we went up into the cloud and snow and came down into sun and rain (at the same time) may not sound like a highlight but all agreed it was. Cablecars on the first free day to Hellbronner and over the glaciers to Aiguille du Midi - just amazing! Hot chocolate in Bonatti Refuge, ice cream in Courmayeur.

Thoughts on Group Leader

John was one of the best walk leaders I've ever had. Perfect pacing, useful tips and local knowledge. His advice on what clothes to take each day, based on weather forecasts, and how much water to carry, was always spot on. Claire moved our stuff and looked after us in camp and was just amazing!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go for it! It is challenging (I'd rate it a 5 rather than 4) and you need to be fit, but if you aren't quite as fit as you'd hoped, you gain fitness as you go along. The rewards more than match the challenge. Be prepared for any weather.

Inca, Trail, Titicaca, Amazon

A true lifetime experience holiday. As others have said be prepared for long hours travelling and some early starts, but it is worth it to see the diverse spectacles Peru offers. From the wildlife of the Ballestas islands, via sand dunes and the Nazca lines to the high Andean plains, Cusco and the Inca Trail to Lake Titicaca and just for good measure we added the Amazon extension. The sense of achievement at the end of every climb on the trail and the clapping from the porters as we reached camp each night was exhilarating. The group developed a close supportive bond that helped everyone through some difficult times particularly when illness struck on the final day of the trek. All the group successfully reaching the Sun Gate was a real pinnacle. Visiting Machu Picchu the day after rather than the usual visit after a long trek at dawn was a bonus.

Most Inspirational Moment

Undoubtedly the moment we all reached the Sun Gate and had our first view of Machu Picchu. Definitely the only way to arrive. Made all the more emotional by the supreme effort of the porters who had piggy backed 2 poorly members of the group.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ollie our leader was fantastic. He had superb knowledge of his country and imparted this to a group with a wide age range from 16 to over 60 in a way that kept everyone interested. On the trek he instinctively knew if someone was struggling and provided quiet support and encouragement. When illness struck he was unflappable and made alternative arrangements without any fuss ensuring that everyone was safe and recovered quickly. He gave excellent recommendations for eating on our free days, advising which restaurants were best for different types of food.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you like wildlife and can afford the time, book the Amazon extension. We had an amazing 4 days in the jungle and were lucky to see jaguars, a giant river otter, lots of creepy crawlies and cayman. It was also a relaxing end to the holiday being in one room for 3 nights! Take a mix of dollars and Sol, some payments were in dollars, others in Sol.

Fantatic week of walking on the Amalfi coastline

A truly amazing trip with fantastic walks and some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline I have ever experienced.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking up Mt. Vesuvius was definitely a highlight.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We couldn't have asked for a better group leader in Emily. She had lots of local knowledge, was very organised and every day was well planned with everything running to schedule. The walks were very enjoyable and she set a comfortable pace, with sufficient stops to catch your breath and take in the views.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walks aren't technical or on overly difficult terrain so I would say boots weren't really needed apart from maybe Vesuvius as it's mainly scree that your walking on. If you opt not to take boots then good walking/trekking shoes are essential. I used poles on several of the days and I found them really helpful as there are some very long uphill & downhill stretches.

The amazing Rongai Route

What a great route to choose to get to your destination. You get to see both sides of the moutain the arid dry north compares the lush rainy south. The beautiful extra day at Mawenzi tarn to help with acclimitisation is so worth it. but most importantly living above the clouds for 4 days is just the best.

Most Inspirational Moment

The people, to turn up at a strange airport in an unfamilar country and meet up with like minded people and share a life changing experience what just such a joy.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mussa our leader had the right balance and was obviously very experience in leading such a big group of people. The guides are obviously checking your health and well being throughout the treck even though you might not be aware that they are!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take cheap clothes and equipment that you dont mind giving away at the end of your trip. The porters who have carried all your equipment and camp for 6 days will appreciate anything you can give them.

Tour du Mont Blanc camping trek

The whole trip was really amazing, challenging, scary at times, breathtaking scenery. Loved the camping and the bond with the team it gave. The leader John, was the best leader I have had, he was brilliant, would help any of the group at any time, no matter how big or small the problem. Very knowledgeable, and absolutely a natural at his job, I can’t recommend him enough. Claire the cook and ‘mum’ back at camp was also fantastic, she would always be there to welcome us back, with drinks and snacks and info on the camp site. Always a brilliant three course dinner.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Telepherique from La Palud to Aiguille du Midi was a trip not to be missed, truly amazing. The whole trip for me was just brilliant, with such different scenery, from meadows, woods to snow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sorry just wrote that info above - brilliant, natural leader

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are fit!

Mont Blanc Highlights

In July I walked the Mont Blanc Highlights tour. For anyone short of time or concerned about doing the full circuit this a great tour. You get to see the best of the best and are based on Chamonix. I think it is great to come back to the same base each night . We had a delightful chalet right in Chamonix town, with the excellent hosts and chefs. Sarah and Rich looked after us, cooked a delicious three course meal every evening, baked wonderful afternon tea each day on our return and took us to the beginning of your walk daily.
I can’t talk highly enough of the general organisation, Sarah and Rich and the professionalism and knowledge of our guides, Rupert and Jen. I highly recommend Exodus Travels and will use them again.

Most Inspirational Moment

Achieving an ascent of 1,000 metres on our walk to Le Brevent.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jen, our guide was excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book with Exodus - you won't be disappointed

Amazing panoramas, head earned.

A great week with long days rewarded with amazing vistas and sweeping panoramas.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top after a 1400m ascent on a 22km day. Tough, but ooooh so rewarding!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Maria was excellent. Well organised, very safety conscious (counting her "ducklings" at regular intervals to make sure all was well) and aware Of the differing speeds and technical ability of the group. All one would wish for in a leader. Possibly would have benefitted from the presence of an assistant. Marshalling 15 people of varying abilities in such harsh terrain seemed a stretch to me.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are well prepared and fit. The advertised walking times were always exceeded by at least an hour and a half so prepare for long slow ascents and arguably over hasty descents to compensate for the time "lost."

Bosnia and Beyond

I was impressed by the variety of landscapes and places on this trip: lakes, waterfalls, forests, mountains, canyons and rivers, as well as monasteries, mosques, churches, famous bridges , palaces and fortresses. And all in 11 days without ever feeling rushed!

Most Inspirational Moment

I really enjoyed our time in Sarajevo learning about its recent history and observing how the city is slowly getting back on its feet.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alen was an excellent leader with near perfect English. He was professional, efficient and knowledgeable. He shared his personal experience of the siege of Sarajevo with us which was very nice of him considering how dreadful it must have been to live through it. He was also good fun with a nice sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It might be preferable to visit this area at a quieter time of year. In late July Mostar and Dubrovnik were particularly crowded with tourists,

Discover Sri Lanka, premium holiday

This holiday provides a really good overview of the highlights of Sri Lanka

Most Inspirational Moment

All three in our party had different moments: The views from Lion Rock, meeting a family at a farm and surviving the white water rafting! Plus many, many more

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sujan was excellent. He always informed us what we were doing, and made sure we had enough time to see and experience everything

Advice for Potential Travellers

It was easy enough to get money from ATMs, so travellers cheques were not needed. Most hotels also took credit cards. Be prepared to eat a lot of hotel buffets as there's not much option to eat out

High Inca trail as must do trip

High Inca trail was brilliant. Fantastic trekking, amazing trails and beautiful scenery. If things couldn’t get any better, to top it off we had a really fantastic leader in Tomas Llancay and also a brilliant second leader in Sebastian.
I would highly recommend the high Inca trail as you get to see a small part of Peru that not many other do and we had the trails mostly to our selves.

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspirational part of my trip was camping at the bottom of Salcantay and then the following morning trekking up the Inca Chiriasqa pass. Though to be fair the whole trip was brilliant.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tomas Llancay was one of the best leaders that I have had so far on all the trips I have done. We always knew what we were doing and had great advise on what we could do on our free days. Huge knowledge on Inca sites, flora and fauna. Its was also lovely to see the encouragement he gave to Sebastian (our second leader) which allowed Sebastain to talk to us about some off the site we visited on the trail, which Sebastian did very well. He also want out of his way to help my partner find a perfect location for him to propose to me, with out me finding out.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you have a lovely warm sleeping bag as I was very greatful I had mine as it can get very cold on some of the camp sites.
