Excellent trip to Egypt- lots of history, culture and wonderful weather

A wonderful trip with some leisurely days along with early starts to beat the heat. October was a perfect time to go- not too hot, blue skies against which the sand and pyramids/ temples contrasted wonderfully.

Our guide was very helpful; it was wonderful to have water available both on the bus and the ship…..

One caveat- it would be helpful if in the trip notes if somewhere it mentioned that one must pay extra to take photographs in some of the temples…….not a problem for myself, but some travellers came with minimal cash, and so hadn’t factored that into the equation. A minor point overall though.

Highly recommend!

Most Inspirational Moment

Truly for me it was hearing the call to prayer while floating down the Nile......as the sun was setting.......drinking a glass of white wine. Second most inspirational moment was Abu Simbel and the entire history involved from ancient and modern times.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about all things Egyptian.......

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just go......very safe. Inspirational in so many ways.......the history is overwhelming......

Prague to Budapest

Exceeded expectations. Great guides, driver and fellow cyclists. Tour is an interesting combination of rural and great cities.

Most Inspirational Moment

Our last meal as a group. Good companions

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent combination of cycling know how and narrative about the history of what we were seeing which included his experience of living under communism. I think he should make sure group is engaged before giving a briefing. Saying “ Gather around the map. I want you all to know where we are going.” once or twice would make all the difference. As well, if possible face people on the bus when relating some interesting history or giving some crucial information. Otherwise some miss key parts of what is being said.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Kick back and enjoy.

Fantastic trip

Thoroughly enjoyed my first Exodus cycling adventure, which exceeded expectations. The scenery was beautiful, a mixture of olive groves, coast lines, varied villages and country lanes. Matera as a starting point was stunning, but the dramatic weather as we set off was challenging, to say the least. Cycling 43 miles in torrential rain and wind through floods, with shower caps over our helmets, was a group bonding experience like no other! Thankfully the rest of the week was perfect weather, if a little windy at times.
All the places we stayed in were well chosen – I especially enjoyed the farm house with its amazing rooms and lovely pool. The meals, eaten together, were delicious and lots of fun, with a mixture of new food to try and copious amounts of local wine to wash it down, all in the knowledge we would be working off the calories the next day.

Most Inspirational Moment

The best moment was sweeping down a hill to the coast the first time. Arriving at an empty white sandy beach as the sun shone and the waves lapped was magical, particularly after our rainy start a couple of days earlier. Then cycling through a market and fishing village was a great experience. I also felt a great sense of achievement when I reached the top of the third killer hill on day five without stopping, and realised my fitness levels had improved as the week went on.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Antonio was a fab leader, very knowledgeable about the area, funny and helpful. Appreciated his singing (!), and the special tour we had of his home town of Bari due to our flight being later than usual. He wen above and beyond the call of duty.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I went on my own and was a little nervous but needn't have been. It is very much a group experience and you soon feel like you have known people for ages. Even for a 'moderate' trip you need to be quite fit. The pace was faster than I would go on my own, (12-18 mph on the flat depending on pot holes and wind), but I managed to keep up, and speedier cyclists were happy to wait for the slower ones as we puffed up the hills. The bikes were great with good gears and comfortable saddles. Check the weather forecast and don't assume because it's Southern Italy it will be warm. Evenings were sometimes chilly and I was glad of the fleece I threw in at the last minute. I had taken a warmish waterproof but some others hadn't and suffered on our wet day.

Great

A good trip, with a stop and go tour around the Atlas and cities (Fes, Meknes, Marrackech). Some walking was included which was wonderful (more even better). Alot of distance covered with different countryside and places.

Most Inspirational Moment

Volubilis visit

Great

Sierra de Aitana Trek

A very enjoyable week’s walking. Spectacular scenery, excellent guides, lovely hotel and top class sandwiches!

Most Inspirational Moment

No one particular inspirational moment although the Serrella Peak and Puig Campana walks stand out.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jose and Jaime are both excellent guides with an understanding of and passion for the area. I also much appreciated the lift into Benidorm to buy a new pair of walking boots after mine fell apart!

Advice for Potential Travellers

A great trip, book it!

Cape Town to Vic Falls

We thoroughly enjoyed this adventure! Our driver guides Jonathan and Ante worked long hours driving us and cooking our food, they were humorous and informative keeping 16 of us in line. Our group was a great bunch which made the driving times (which are VERY LONG) quite fun. There is a lot of “Bushy Bushy” stops along the way. All the accommodations were great. The only complaint I would have is that the “:Stevie” bus was not Air Conditioned, it was a very HOT drive in the Namibian Desert with no AC. Also no one was told there would be an extra cost for the safari drives in Etosha Park which was $100.00 US each. I also feel the amounts of money in the Trip Notes is way off base, you will need a lot more than what is recommended.

Most Inspirational Moment

Chobe and Etosha Park

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both Jonathan and Ante were Fantastic

Excellent trip!

Great cycling, fab food, wonderful people, stunning scenery! Oh and the best guide ever! Guaranteed!!

Most Inspirational Moment

I suppose like everyone completing the cycle to Newara Eliya! Epic cycle made even more challenging with the torrential rain!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

I have done about 10 Exodus cycling trips and I have to say that Suresh has been the best! His organization skills, attention to detail and great sense of humour meant that we felt totally spoiled and supported on this trip! I certainly would not have completed the climb to Nuwara Eliya without him as he stayed with myself and another person for the last 10 K or so. I had total faith in him to get us there safely! He helped everyone at the end of the trip and I was glad to stay at the hotel in Colombo longer as opposed to spending a whole day at the airport. Thanks for helping me with that Suresh! I must also mention Saranga, Anitha and Upali. I probably saw more of Saranga and he was the back cyclist and I spent a lot of time at the back! His quiet presence was reassuring and he took the bike off me and parked it regularly when I got off. When you saw Upali directing u to the left or right it usually meant that the cycling was finished!! Whew! Anitha was a gentle giant who always filled our water bottles before we even asked! He was so lovely and kind!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Where to start? Eh don’t expect to lose weight! The food was fab! We seemed to be always eating! Train for distance and hills for this trip. I had done some training but could done more. Bring less clothes as you have an opportunity to have washing done.

Great week cycling in Sicily, but very disappointing flights

A great week’s cycling in Sicily in October. Weather and scenery were great (sunny in high 20’s), the group was very entertaining and got on so well that all 16 of us ate together every night, and the tour guides were very helpful, friendly and informative.
The cycling route could have been extended, as there were a couple of very light days, but the only real problem was the group flights (see advice below).

Most Inspirational Moment

Not really any inspirational moments - Sicily was great and the group of 16 got on very well together.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Davide di Mauro was excellent throughout.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book your own flights - Exodus group booking means you can't pre-book seats (or even be sure that you will sit next to your partner / friends), you can't check in online, and you get whatever Exodus can find cheapest. We ended up travelling from Heathrow to Milan to catch a connection to Sicily (and almost missed connection on return flight) when we could have flown direct with BA from Gatwick, and the four of us were scattered all over all four flights. Not an enjoyable way of starting or ending your holiday !

Amazing Expierence

Great trip, good variety while sticking to the Volcano theme, great food. As a new walker I had some concerns about the walking but the pace was well measured and the support and preparation guide excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

Stromboli summit watching the eruptions was what the rest of the trip seemed to build up to and it didn't disappoint. Coming down from Stromboli was great fun. Vulcano fumaroles is a good runner up!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Genny is a fantastic leader, cheerful and friendly, she set a good walking pace for the terrain that ensured all the group were able to get to the objectives at the right time, such as sunset. She picked out some great food stops, Angelina's on Lipari will live in my memory for a long time.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you prepare for the trip you will have a great experience, take layers especially wind proof for the summit sitting! You cant pay for much/anything? with a card so take cash. Don't underestimate the boat rides - take, or buy locally, travel sickness pills if you aren't sure of your "sea legs".
