Hikes to Remember

This trip has been memorable with amazing hikes and breathtaking views. Starting off with the good: our guide Evgenia/Jenny has been nothing but wonderful. She is enthusiastic, easy-going, and knowledgeable. She planned our hikes extremely well, taking into account the athletic abilities of all group members. We got lucky with the weather and did not need rain gear in July. The hikes were paced well and reasonable, most people were able to keep up, but I would rate it more of a 4/7 rather than a 3/7 difficulty due to the steepness in some segments. Trekking poles were a must on several of the hikes. The rest day was essential as most of us had knee aches by the 3rd day. Things that could have been better: my partner and I were among the first to sign up and called Exodus to notify them that we would prefer to stay in Chalet Chocolat over Chalupa (due to location; Chocolat is much closer to the city center). We ended up getting placed in Chalupa anyway, which is still nice but the bus ride takes over 20 minutes. Second, we called to inquire room upgrades and were told that whoever signed up first would have priority on better rooms. We ended up getting the smallest room in the chalet, with low slanted ceilings and no other furniture than the bed while people who signed up later had kitchen/refrigerator, couches, or balconies in their rooms. There should be price adjustments depending on quality/size of the rooms. Third, 2 out of the 5 hikes required taking public transportation which involved being crammed like sardines into buses. I feel like with the amount we paid, private transportation should have been arranged. Regardless of these shortcomings, the hikes themselves make the whole trip worth it. Hopefully Exodus can make further improvements in future iterations of this journey.

Reply from Exodus

We are delighted to hear that B Y had a memorable time in Mont Blanc, and that Jenny, who led their departure, was able to really elevate their experience hiking in this beautiful region. We’re also pleased to read that the weather was favourable during their time there!

We are sorry, though, that B Y felt there were a few things which could have been better. Having spoken to our operations team, we understand that customers who booked this trip were allocated their preferred chalet, where this was possible, based on the order in which they booked on. We regret that the Chalet Chocolat turned out to be full when B Y confirmed their booking, though the Chalet Chalupa is an equally comfortable and well-equipped property. Rooming allocations are similarly done on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, and though being a chalet bedrooms do naturally vary in size and layout, we feel that all rooms at the Chalupa are of a good standard for our guests.

We are thankful to B Y for taking the time to leave their review, and are glad that despite the points they raise above they found the trip to be a worthwhile and memorable experience.

A great way to explore Romania

This turned out to be yet another great Exodus cycling trip. Cycling is the perfect way to explore the lovely countryside, and see people living a simple country life. There was a nice balance of cycling, culture, and visits during the day. The cycling was not too hard-core and the accommodation generally was simple but clean and comfortable. Some of the nicest places we stayed were local rural guesthouses with a warm welcome. The food was not particularly exciting but perfectly palatable– (bread was generally disappointing and a bit dry). We were lucky enough to have a great group of people who were fun to be with. As usual everything was incredibly well organised with a well-balanced programme of activities, and we felt looked after. Bikes were good and well maintained by the wonderful Radu.

Most Inspirational Moment

No one stand out moment, but lots of nice memories - The wonderful City of Brasov, with its beautiful buildings, large open square and cafe culture (A great place for a short weekend break). Lunchtime picnic in the woods overlooking huge meadow, a horse and cart ride through the countryside to one of the fortified churches.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tudor was very hard working and nothing was too much trouble - good local knowledge. Sometimes a bit irritable with the group when we didn't quite take on board instructions (did talk for quite extended periods of time which meant we sometimes lost the thread a bit!) Radu the support leader was fantastic, excellent English, great company, also hard working and knowledgeable

Advice for Potential Travellers

We had been told than places took Euros as an alternative to local currency but this was not the case. Cards not always accepted in rural areas, we needed many more Lei than we expected

VG

A great trip. 3 different countries; well paced.

Most Inspirational Moment

Kyrgyzstan - majestic scenery, eagle visit. Uzbekistan - history, culture, insight into life there now.

Thoughts on Group Leader

3 - all good, some better than others.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the notes. No need to overpack. Sheet sleeping bag handy for the yurt.

In the Realm of the Brown Bear

This trip was even more that the brochure suggests. Every day was an experience and adventure, every mountain trail an education and sometimes a challenge. A really great opportunity to experience nature at its best!

Most Inspirational Moment

The stand out moments of the trip were having the opportunity to actually see Brown Bear, Chamois and wild boar in their natural environments and to learn so much about their behaviour and habitats.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Julian is an absolute authority on the Rodopi mountain area of Bulgaria and the ongoing conservation of the wildlife therein. He enthusiasm for this project was contagious and he was more than happy to share his knowledge with the group at all times.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip notes. This is much more than your average walking holiday!

Stunning scenery!

A wonderful week exploring some of Croatia’s islands by bike, starting from Split to Dubrovnik! Well organised with good support throughout. As this was my first cycling holiday I appreciated knowing the support vehicle is there, just in case!

Most Inspirational Moment

The beautiful scenery on the island of Mljet! Our guide Mario took us up to a viewpoint during an optional hike and the view was absolutely stunning!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mario was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable in the area and the intriguing history of Croatia.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I highly recommend the optional trip to Mljet!

Wonderful trip!

Beautiful scenery and peaceful pathways in a historic region filled with castles, palaces, and medieval villages. Great week being immersed in everything the region has to offer – amazing food, beautiful views, fascinating history and of course prosecco! The hotel was ideally situated with restaurants nearby. Great experience and highly recommended!

Most Inspirational Moment

Learning how passionate the winemakers are and sampling a variety of prosecco and wines.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Vania De Paoli was amazing with her local knowledge, friendliness and enthusiasm! Sandra was great fun keeping the group entertained on our drives!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Layered clothing and good walking shoes are recommended.

The Moonstone Trek

“Brilliant trip with great guides,

The only thing i would say that this trip is not moderate and should be re-classified “

Most Inspirational Moment

Both guides were great but the first one (smithy) for the main trip was absolutely brilliant, helpful, insightful and considerate to everyone's needs

The Moonstone Trek

The quality of the tour guides were excellent with the itinerary very well planned.

Most Inspirational Moment

The whole trip far exceeded expectations, the only comment that I would make is that the Moonstone Trek was far more difficult than expected, that was the feeling of all the people on the trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Smithy in particular was probably the best guide that I have had on these trips.

Beautiful Sicily

The tour explores around beautiful Sicily’s historical towns and cities. Sicily has so much to bring to the table from local foods, history, culture and scenery and more. Look forward to visiting again!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tiziano was a brilliant host to Sicily, he was passionate, energetic and organised - giving us restaurant recommendations and local foods to try in each area we stopped at. In addition, he was super knowledgeable about the history of the island and also arranged for additional stop offs during the trip so we could see more places of interest. The local guides where also very knowledgeable during the city tour and archeological sites.

Dream come true! JUST GO!!!

WOW. What and absolutely epic trip this was! It really was the trip of a life time, so many amazing opportunities to get super close to all the wildlife. I picked Botswana and Zimbabwe for the fact they have the largest population of African elephants found anywhere, WOW I was not disappointed. Thousands of elephants everywhere I looked, it was an animal lover’s paradise! not only elephants but an abundance of birds, cheetahs, leopards, rhinos, giraffe, hippos galore. Impala, buffalo, wildebeest and so much more! The countries themselves were absolutely beautiful and so different in terrain. Some of the most genuine and nicest people I have ever met anywhere! The accommodation was spot on and the food was absolutely delicious.

Most Inspirational Moment

There wasn’t just one moment but SOOO many unbelievable moments. -Day one watching a pride of lions try and take down buffalo -Spotting the elusive leopard on a nighttime game drive -Watching a cheetah take down an impala and feed it to her cubs -Camping in the Okavango delta, what an experience this was! one of the last remaining wildernesses left on the planet! it was epic!! The helicopter ride over the delta was amazing!! Dancing around the camp fire listening to the local music. - Rhino spotting on food in Matopo NP. -Bumping into a grumpy elephant at night trumpeting at us! -Spotting a group of African wild dogs on the hunt -I must add dancing with the local tribes, this was brilliant!! -Whitewater rafting in the Zambezi!! This was epic! Honestly the list goes on.....

Thoughts on Group Leader

Brilliant!! Adonia was superb, he was so knowledgably about the local areas and wildlife. He always told us in so much detail what to expect in the coming days. He was so enthusiastic his passion really shined through. He was a genuinely lovely guy and nothing was too much trouble! Couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Sifiso the driver was also amazing, brilliant driving on such bumpy road. His knowledge of wildlife and the local areas was spot on too! Thanks guy without you this trip wouldn’t have been as good!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

JUST BOOK IT! BOOK IT NOW! Must pack your torch, pack loo roll for the delta, pack snacks for long drives and books. Must book the helicopter over the delta!! river cruise on the final night in the Zambezi with your new travel friends. White water rafting, if you are up for an adventure. Take a good camera, because wow you will take some epic pics!! and binoculars!
