MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

What a stunning week!  Unrivalled views, excellent hosting by Oliver and Elaine whose care and obvious enjoyment of their work made this a fun, exhilirating and memorable walking holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were several highlights of the trip:  after the somewhat long and, at times, challenging walk to reach the top at 'Lac Blanc' it was worth every minute.  We were privileged to see Ibex who paused long enough for photos posing adjacent to the turquoise meltwater. The trip to Italy was beautiful - the amazing 'balcony walk' through meadows filled with wild flowers identified and described by Oliver, whose extensive knowledge made them even more interesting.Every day was different and memorable in its own right.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Oliver, as our group leader was caring, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and also great fun!  His co-pilot, Dylan, was also amusing (Fox Terrier!).  At all times, we felt safe, included and we could not have asked for a nicer person to make the walks interesting and fun .

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would certainly advise being prepared for changable weather.  One day we experienced all conditions apart from snow!  It was often warm and benign low down needing suncream and sunhats, but at high altitude the weather became cool and wet on two occaions thus needing our waterproof leggings which we had fortunately packed in our backpacks.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

Amazing views of the Adriatic help with the tough climbs on this trip, and the thought of jumping in the sea at the end has you sailing down the descents. A really exhilarating trip with varied routes and fun downhill curves. You are continually breathing in the scent of lavender fields and pine trees which is absolute bliss.

Most Inspirational Moment

All the downhills felt inspirational. Other top moments included stacking the bikes on the roof of a boat to go island-hopping, a fish barbeque on board which was cooked using a blow-torch and all of us jumping one by one off the roof of said boat. Another one was deciding at the end of another long, sweltering ride that it was ok to strip down to sports bra and inner shorts to jump in the sea! Totally liberating.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great fun, bubbly and enthusiastic but above all extremely strict about safety so you knew you were in good hands. A dab hand at fixing punctures too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As a newcomer to cycling I found I needed to wear two pairs of padded shorts most days and was very happy I'd brought a camelbak and (don't laugh) a fan for the hot evenings. I took a couple of extra days at the end as Dubrovnik (and all Croatia) is just too fascinating a place to do in a day. Some of us also went down to Montenegro at the end. Otherwise, it can all flash by a bit too quickly what with physical fatigue and the quick pace of the trip. I was also glad I travelled with a backpack, rather than suitcase as some did, and make sure you leave some space to bring back local olive oil and grappa.

MONT BLANC CIRCUIT

Awesome mountains, serene forests, good company, billowing glaciers, clouds come and go into nirvana, we stayed grounded and giggled our way through french pastries and tea-amazing vibes…

Most Inspirational Moment

Looking at le Grand Jorasses from our camping site with fresh snow on top eary in the morning. Brevent /Grand Balcon trail: breathtaking views of Aigille du Midi and le Mt. Blanc Massif to feed mountain addicted eyes, the retina retains more echoes than the slackliner...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Simon:Competent mountain skills (safety, ability, enjoyment), good communicator (briefing/debriefing of day) and excellent manager of interpersonal group dynamics.Ben:Good food and provision of special needs clients. Tents up and hot water without fail after a day of hiking...Thank you Simon and Ben

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be sure to check out grading/difficulty degree. Realistic estimate of own abilities to trip or any other EXODUS trip.Other than that you are in safe hands...

AMALFI COAST & BAY OF NAPLES

My wife and I had an excellent break on the Amalfi coast – we were not certain if the location used by Exodus would be the right one but having been there it was a wise decision to be in the village of Bomerano.  The hotel was excellent, the food superb, the atmosphere great, the programme well tailored and we still had time to ourselves.  So well done Exodus!

Most Inspirational Moment

The most stimulating part of our trip was the visit of Herculenium and second the Walk of the Gods - Capri is nice but very touristy!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Morten was brilliant, very thoughful as every other Exodus guides we have come across.  He was very informative, passionate about Italian life and very knowledgeable. He made a big difference to our holiday.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a rather easy holiday - you may be tempted by the walking holiday on the Amalfi coast but this is a very good alternative and you will also get plenty of walking opportunities in fact (and see more of the interesting sites!) .

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

A well balanced and varied week of cycling, swimming and sight-seeing amongst some breathtaking scenery.

Most Inspirational Moment

Island-hopping, taking our bicycles on various ferries, and especially our optional day on Miljet when we cycled around the lake and found a little paradise at the end of the track where we swam in crystal clear turquoise waters...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ana was very much in control of the group and excellent at organising everything including restaurant bills which can be a headache! She has a strong personality but she was also sensitive to other people's wishes and needs, and did all she could to accomodate everyone. Great sense of humour too, and very supportive with people cycling at the back. A group leader one will remember.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some tough uphills at times, especially on hot summer days and as soon as your first day, but the freewheel downhills are exhilarating and make it all worhwhile! A real adrenaline rush...

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

The best holiday I ever had in my life so far. Wonderful scenery, wonderful guide and wonderful group.

Most Inspirational Moment

The view of Lac Blanc on the third day of the walk. While having lunch beside the lake, I felt for moment that all my dreams are fulfilled. Even after a week from the holiday, I still stare at my photos from that day. It is hard to explain the scenery in one word as you can see the snow caped mountains, beautiful lake, refugee, ibex (mountain goats) etc in single location. For facebook users, you will be confused which photo to be made your profile photo.

Thoughts on Group Leader

In one word, "perfect". I still wonder how a person can manage these many days of walking in a year.Being my first walking holiday, I was a bit worried about the difficulty of walking for five days. But he set the walk speed in such a way that we never feel the strain of walk. I was even ready for walk on the sixth day also. He kept on interacting each and every member of the walk and made sure the group enjoys the walk. Another thing not missed out is the endless flow of jokes from his mouth, But you have to listen carefully to understand them, which I couldn't do most of the times.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walk is within the limits of anybody who is used to 5-6 hours of weekend walking. Longest walks are on third and last day. I will be very helpful if you practice multiple days walking as we are tend to relax on the next day of our weekend walk. Being a centre based walking, we have the option of not to walk on any days if we dont feel like. Personally I will advise you not to miss out walk on third day (Lac Blanc). Also never ever forget waterproofs on any day of the walk.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

This was truly a GREAT week and a GREAT walking tour!  It starts with the friendly Chalet where you live, to the guide (Oliver) who is simply superb to the actual trekking days which were all very nicely planned out and offered a little bit of a different twist to every day to keep it exciting!

Most Inspirational Moment

The second day where we started to walk from Courmayeur in Italy and where the full day was basically "postcard views" every single minute!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Oliver, the groupleader & guide was one of the highlights of the trip!  A trip like this can be a success or a none success based on the tourleader and Oliver got it ALL right!  The greatness of the trip is partly made by Oliver who is knowledgeable, funny, interesting and had a great way of making the full group feel special!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

We can 100% recommend this trip!  The tempo of the daily walks are set at a very reasonable pace so anybody can really make it without any pre-training.  As the trip notes point out, be aware that the rooms in the chalet are quite small and basic. An extra bonus to the Chalet (on top of the the great food and the outdoor jacuzzi) is that the Chalet has very good wireless connection so if you have to check back with work or need system access its very handy!

MONTENEGRO, BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

Fantastically well organised trip with excellent local guides.

Most Inspirational Moment

Great to have meals prepared by local people in stunning surroundings. Exodus do this very well and it helps to boost local economy.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent and extremely good historical knowledge. Handled a problem with one of our group who had breathing difficulties very well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

GO to Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia

CORSICAN MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES

We stayed in a friendly family run guest house overlooking the village and mountains.  The mornings and evenings were filled with the heady perfume of lime blossom.  Immediate relaxation!  The mountain scenery was stunning and the people warm and friendly, appreciating us trying to speak French or Italian with them! Some days involved quite a bit of country lane walking or had periods of hanging around waiting for the public bus to turn up at the end of the day, which I found frustrating as I wanted to be walking in the mountains that surrounded us.  However the last 2 days of walking were in the mountains.

Most Inspirational Moment

The walks that included parts of the GR20 and the refreshing mountain streams where we could paddle, dabble or swim dependant on how brave (or hot) we felt! The food in our guest house was excellent but with a typical breakfast of freshly baked croissants and bread with jam plus coffee and orange juice,  we felt the need to supplement this with fruit bought in the village.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rich was an excellent leader with bags of personality, enthusiasm and energy.  He taught us quite a lot from how to correctly use walking poles to spotting and following the required waymark signs....etc.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The temperatures were 32-36degs C so take a hat but don't bother with swimwear or a travel towel as we just went into the streams as we were - very liberating!  Zip-offs were useful to wear in the macquis areas to prevent scratches and, if you're prone to bites, have insect repellent / after bite, etc with you.

MONT BLANC CIRCUIT

The scenery is spectacular throughout much of this hike, provided that the weather permits good visibility. At no point did I ever feel like I was in the "wilderness," but there were plenty of hot chocolate, cake, and pie stops to compensate for that. It was an enjoyable group holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

One really cool moment for me was getting to walk around a Roman cryptoporticus in Aosta, Italy during one of the rest days. This was my first trip to Europe, so it was my first exposure to Roman ruins. I nerded out a bit.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Simon was our guide and leader, and Ben was our logistics coordinator and cook. They were both solid guys who did their jobs well. Simply put, if you're going for a guided walk in the mountains, these are the kind of people you want to go with you. Our group had a relatively broad distribution of preferred walking speeds, and Simon dealt with it perfectly using a combination of patience and flexibility, taking care of the people toiling away in back and letting the people in front go at their own pace without getting too far afield. There was also a diverse and fairly restrictive assortment of special dietary needs that Ben was constantly scrambling to address. As far as I’m concerned, they both deserve medals for putting up with us.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Mountain trails involve elevation gain and loss, so it should almost go without saying that time you invest beforehand in physical conditioning will make you a happier camper on the trail. You do not need to be an iron man by any means, but physical distress can detract from enjoyment if it is experienced over the timescale of a couple weeks.
