Hi.  Any tips on what to pack / what to wear would be most gratefully received. Thanks

Bookworm50

Hi Chris,

That's something I am still trying to decide - I am hopeless at this packing business !  So far I have laid out long cotton type trousers for day time and a couple of pairs of knee length shorts and then a couple of pairs of chino type trousers for the evening.  Tee shirts and long sleeve lightweight shirts forevening and a light fleece for the Wadi Rum.  This will probably change several times before I acutally pack it.  I have a pair of lightweight trainer/shoes for daytime and a pair of jellies for Dead Sea and then some sandals for evening.  Nothing dressy.  I am taking a silk liner (which I made) for camping out as I didn't want the hassle to taking a sleeping bag, I think you can then use their blankets.

I am waiting to hear from someone who went on the trip at the end of April - she is going to give me some info whih I will gladly pass on.

Not sure how many going on our trip yet - when I asked about 3/4 weeks ago they told me there were eight other people so don't know how many now.

Please feel free to email me - [email protected] or find me on facebook.

I got my tickets on Saturday and I am now really looking forward to the holiday, I hear it is an amazing trip .

Perhaps we can arrange to meet up at the airport before the flight ?

Regards

Hi Pam

Thanks for your message and advice and sorry for my slow response.  Good to know that I'm not the only one who finds packing hard work!  I'll email you separately shortly.

Cheers

Hi
I did this trip last year
Would recommend a decent pair of walking shoes /boots. There is a fair amount of walking in Petra (not all on paths) and you need good shoes to make the most of it.
Also for camping out I did take a small sleeping bag (as it was Feb) but they provide beds and blankets in the tents which are sufficient.
Plus they were building a toilet and shower block at the time.
Hope that helps - enjoy your trip.

Hi Diane,

Thanks for your tips - very useful.  I have made a silk sleeping bag liner and am going to use that plus blankets for Wadi Rum and hope that will be sufficient.  Have great difficulty with knowing what to take clothes wise so I have everything laid out and will make a decision at the last minute.  Would be great if they do have showers now hope it doesn't spoil the ambience!  Really looking forward to going. Hi Chris,

Will look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Pam and everyone else who is getting ready for your trip.

Right, most of what you are packing sounds fine Pam, you definetly need some kind of footwear to protect your feet in the dead sea as it was very rocky at the entry point.

For the desert trip, it should be fine with a sleeping bag liner, they do have sleeping bags spare at the camp and also blankets so I don't think you will need to carry those with you, and a fleece for the evening tho it didn't get cold at all when we were there.

The camp is fine as are the toilet facilities there, and lovely hosts. Take a torch as the electricity is usually turned off after about 11 at night so you will need it during the night.

For walking in petra, I think definetly some light walking boots as there are some very rocky trails and lots and lots of steps.

Recommend no really short shorts or vest tops due to their culture, short sleeved tshirts are fine, also keep in mind there is not much shade, so light long sleeved tops are handy, and a scarf is really handy to keep shshoulders and head covered or protected from sun. sun hat handy as it can get quite windy, I did burn my scalp.

Apart from Petra, the other sites should be fine with comfortable sandals or trainers.

Just keep in mind that it will probably be a lot hotter than when I was there.

I would also wear long trousers for Petra and the desert to keep protected, also they will be more comfortable for when you get on that camel/horse/donkey - don't let them take you up any of the high climbs on the donkeys, the steps are too high and its really cruel for the animals.

After the long climb up to the monastery it was nice to take a slow camel ride back to the entrance - probably cos my legs were like jelly by this time and it was a long way back to the treasury.

Most of all, just remember to look and appreciate the sights, not just through a camera lens.

Petra was so much more than I imagined - you are in for a treat,

Hi Corrine,

Sounds like I have most things covered with what I plan to take apart from footwear.  I have some jellies for Dead Sea but the walking shoes I have are starting to be a problem, especially after my visit to the chiropodist, he really mangled my big toe nail!  Will have to look for something else - do you think the open toe birkenstock type sandals would be ok?

Secondly, currency - what did you take?  I was thinking I would take just JD so I don't have to worry about changing up stirling.  I have also made sure I have money in the bak so I can use debit card if I need to.

Glad you had a good experience - where to next?

Regards
