Hi, just booked on this trip with my husband Phil and two children Imogen (10) and George (9).  This is our first trip with Exodus and first long haul flight with children - any tips?!  We'd love to hear from anyone else booked on Jungles and beaches departing in August 2011. Thanks Sarah

Welcome to the group Richard and family.  As you can see with over 50 posts we have been busy getting to know each other on this forum and seem a friendly bunch!  We were over in Richmond on Monday.  What an amazing park you have there. The children loved the deer. I was picking up a new bike and the lady recommended a cycle around the park before heading for home.

Are you travelling on the group flight?

We are all getting very excited about the holiday although still need to locate suitcases etc.  We have been mainly on bucket and spade type holidays for the last few years so have used holdalls and thrown bits and bobs in the boot of the car.  I don't think I can remember the last time we needed proper suitcases.

So you have been with Exodus before.  Where did you go and when?  Any tips for children on long haul flights, apart from sit the other end of the plane to them!!  Imogen was very excited to see another girl on the trip.  It seems like there will be a really great bunch of children, all around the same age, on this holiday.

Jo, as for packing, haven't really thought about it yet.  Weather here has been overcast for the last weeks so we've been living in jeans.  Can't get my head around heat and shorts!  We will take a long sleeved top for temple visits etc.  Going to buy a headtorch too, because finding the latrine in tribal village at 2am without one could be fun!  Also read some feedback about the restraunts on the beach in Koh Samet with fire jugglers.  Sounded great until they said it was so dark you could not see what you were eating!

Looking forward to all meeting soon, Sarah

Hello to all, Good to hear from everyone.  Naturally, we're all getting more and more excited too!  Kids and I are now on school holidays (Michael's still working but bringing me cups of tea before he leaves each morning!)  Spent all this week working (while Tom and Liv were having a holiday with grandparents) to get my classroom and planning all out of the way so that I can now think about what to buy/pack and just look forward to the trip.  Actaully, you say about your kids taking care Jo, I actually managed to dislocate my knee on Monday (have done it before!) so am hoping it feels OK quickly.  I seem to have an ever growing list of what to buy and we've already been shopping once in town as well as online.  We were just talking about warn gear too- prob. take one fleecy each for evening/hill area and a light waterproof.  We're also all taking lightweight walking boots and 1 or 2 pairs of long trousers each (we are a bit paranoid about being eaten by mosquitos so wanting to cover up in jungle areas!).  We've bought trousers with the zip-off bits in order to hedge our bets so hope that works out OK.  Not sure how much to take in the way of nice/evening/going-out clothes but want to leave space in suitcases for buying things too.  Lovely to hear from the Wright family- I am really looking forward to meeting everyone.  Is that everyone now (4 families) do you know?  Happy packing!  Kate

Hi Kate! Ouch, your knee sounds so painful! I sure hope it heals soon! I am so paranoid about something happening just before the trip!

As for packing, I am bringing a couple of cotton type long sleeveless dress that I can just roll up that don't wrinkle that I can wear day or evening. They will be good for temple visits, I can just throw a scarf over my shoulders and will be cool to wear. One pair of pants each, one long sleeved tshirt and one long sleeved fleecy or hoodie. Lots of shorts and tshirts. We all have a fold up rain poncho in our day packs.

I do wonder if it is just us four families...that would be nice, although as Richard mentioned, there is a mystery 14 yr old we have not yet heard about, so there could be one more family(?).....

Are you all keen to try the street vendors food? We can't wait! It's supposed to delicious and super cheap and be of all safe to eat as it is freshly prepared right in front of you.

Hi all. Our last trip with Exodus was Botswana last year which was great. The main suprise was the weather which, despite the sun, was cold first thing in the morning when we went for game drives. Dont have many tips for long haul flights except take plenty to do. Also you might consider packing sandwiches if you think that the children might not like airline food. If they dont eat they may be prone to travel sickness.

Richmond park is great for cycling. There are to ways round, one on the road and one on a dirt track. Its been interesting to see caylists migrate to the road as mountain bikes have been dropped in favour of road bikes.

Wow, Africa and eygpt are on my bucket list! The weather in Thailand has been looking really hot lately, not that I expected any differently! Still can't believe it's so close, it's like a dream.

Ladies are u bringing one or two piece swimming suits?

Just realised that when we arrive at Bangkok at 7.30pm it won't feel like 2am but more like 12noon.  Got my time difference calculations the wrong way round!

A week to go... must start packing soon!

We are all trying to get up a bit earlier to try to adjust a bit but don't know how successful it'll be; haven't actually started yet.   I thought we could try 1/2 an hour earlier each day from Monday.  I'm sure we're all going to struggle that first day on the tour of Bangkok in the morning!!

Have got most of what we need now but haven't started putting it all together yet.  Can't believe that a week tomorrow we'll be in Thailand!

Sorry, meant to say in the last bit- your blog is excellent.  We really enjoyed seeing all your photos and reading what you've been doing.  It must have taken you ages!  (I think I need some lessons from you- Kate).  Olivia now wants to try one!!  I think Thomas has started to show her how to do it so you never know, she may have something to show you before we go?

Hi everyone, this is Hannah, and I.m 13 but turning 14 on the 18th ( while were on our trip!) I also enjoy art a lot and I also like photography and animals! I guess my family and I will be the only ones with accents, seeing as you're all from England, and were from Canada! I can't wait to meet everyone and go on the trip! I'm still thinking about whether I want to make a travel journal, but my brother(15) and I will be bringing cards, and our iPod touches, and we each have a d.s. So we can definitely bring them! Can't wait to meet you all! -Hannah

Hi it's Tom and Livvy.  Glad you like art and animals.  We both love animals.  Have you got a pet?  We have a lizard called Spiky (Tom's) and a hamster called Truffle (Livvy's).  I will be bringing my 3DS  and have a DS lite for Livvy or anyone to use when we're away (Tom).  My Mum used to make (Mum says "encourage") us to do a journal but I enjoy drawing lizards and interesting animals in mine (Tom).  Liv says we've got accents!  Those from the South of England will think we've got Northern accents but I suspect not as strong as a Canadian accent!!

Hi, it's Hannah. It must be fun to have a lizard! I like the names Truffle, and Spiky. My family has a dog named Sadie, and two cats, Oreo (she's black and white) and Jasper(mostly black), and a fish. I also have a gerbil called Oscar. Our accents will be quite strong to everyone else, but to us everyone else will have accents, so it will be really interesting! I've heard of the 3DS. Does it really work in 3D? I'd like to see how it works. I have a DSI and my brother, Quinn, has a DS lite.  Sorry about the triple post by the way, I was at our cottage, at the lake and the internet was a bit weird.

Hi, my name is Alice and I am 12 years old. I have a pet dog called Coco, a cat called Daisy and I am looking after my cousin's fish. Our pets do not get on very well as the cat is 18 and the dog still behaves like a puppy as she is only 14 months. I will definately be bringing my ds and my ipod to try to prevent myself from being too bored on the plane journey. I am rubbish at writing journals so will not be bringing one myself as I have tried before many times and failed miserably. Oh well!

No pets here ( though we try every method in the book to get our mum and dad get us one)  ... but I have got a very puppy-like brother !! I have to say I will try to keep a travel journal but I am not the best now I am older and have more on my mind. I will probably find some way to record my memories using some form of computer. We got Mum and Dad's Honeymoon photos of Thailand out last night. I was amazed that my mum had the courage to wear a bikini, mind you she was younger then !!! We got the 'Bridge On The River Kwai' DVD out from the library with my free DVD voucher that I got for doing the Summer Reading Challenge. My Grandad says it is a good film!

Still can't wait to see you all ( my brother, George says the same!)

sorry, to break-up the lovely chat the children are having. Imogen, your blog is wonderful. you and your brother are fabulous!

i just wanted you all to know that we have had some fairly major upheaval in our lives here over the last week that will most likely affect the trip in some manor. there is a strong possibility that Jamie will not be coming with us. there is even a chance that none of us will be coming.

it's quite complicated, but what has happened is that over the last 4 to 5 weeks, jamie has suddenly developed neurological symptoms on the left side of his body that has rapidly progressed from just his arm to his entire left side. his fine motor skills are affected and he is having left and arm spasms. he saw a neurologist last week who ordered a urgent MRI of his brain and that luckily happened the next day. thankfully there are no tumours, but of course there could be a whole host of other things wrong and they are still investigating. he has an EEG on Friday and another MRI coming up. he is quite tired all the time and has difficulty walking far.

Jamie very very strongly wants me and the children to still go on the trip. he is insisting. i don't know what to do. once in a while when he is feeling okay he toys with coming, but we worry about what is this progresses more?

oh, and of all the trips we have taken, i have bought cancellation insurance...except THIS ONE! i called and exodus will refund or credit ZERO. lesson learned.

i don't know if anyone is checking the forum at this point, but i thought i would post this in case anyone is....

that is LEG and arm spasms, not left and arm.

Hi Jo and family,

So sorry to hear your news; you must all be terribly worried.  I am sure it must be awful trying to decide whether to go or not.  Just letting you know that our thoughts are with you and we all wish Jamie a speedy recovery.  Kate and family X

We are really sorry to hear you are going through such a worrying time at the moment.  Our thoughts are with you all and hope that Jamie's symptoms are only temporary.  The MRI scan last week must have come as a relief.  Hope this week's tests have good results too.  Sending you a big hug from the UK. Lots of love Sarah and Phil

Wow, we feel like we have new friends already! Things are still very much up in the air here. We have never lived through anything so bizarre and surreal.

Jamie had an MRI on his neck and spine this morning (it's only 1 pm here) so we hope to hear something today or tomorrow AM. EEG tomorrow. We're supposed to leave early Saturday AM.

Jamie had a good chat with his neurologist yesterday, who is not as opposed to him going as he used to be, as long as todays MRI is normal and we make obvious adjustments to the trip (like Jamie not do the jungle trek etc). He has boosted his meds up too.

So as you can see we are very stressed here, on pins and needles, not sleeping. Will post an update when I can so you will know if we re coming, who is coming etc. So please stay in touch! I think if we will make it we will need a good Thai massage and I will need a strong gin and tonic!!

More gin than tonic!  But maybe not for Jamie as it may not mix too well with his medication!  Do hope the results are favourable and that you are all able to join us.  We do feel like friends already as we were really disappointed yesterday by the thought that you might not be able to make it.  However, we realise it's still very much in the balance, but at least not ruled out completely.  Fingers crossed for the EEG tomorrow.

Hi Jo, Jamie and family. so sorry to read of your problems. We hope that you get some reassuring news  soon and that you are all able to come. You seem to have a good medical set up, to be seen so quickly. A fast diagnoses can help reduce the anxiety and help the recovery. We have our fingers crossed for you.........   Best wishes,

well, we are ALL coming! it's 11:45 pm Friday night here and we are still frantically packing, since we have been living moment to moment all week long. jamie had his MRI yesterday and had his brain scan today and we got both the results late this afternoon, talk about flying by the seat of your pants! the good news is, the results are good, tumours and anything really really horrible are ruled out. he was given the green light to go with cautions of course. the bad news is, the neuro is still stumped and Jamie still has extensive testing to undergo when we get back, something is still very wrong. he is still suffering uncontrolled "myoclonic like" seizures of his arms and legs. the meds make him very tired and he has trouble walking very far. so it is Thailand "lite" for Jamie! we will still have fun i am sure!! we are all so happy to go, still in a bit of a dream like panic i am afraid, my father is picking us up at 9 am tomorrow morning for the airport!

so we will see you all there! can't wait to meet you all, our new friends! we are still going to try and make our Loy Nava dinner cruise from 6 to 8pm on the 15th(it's our wedding anniversary!). they drive us back in a mini-van, so we should be back by 8:30 to 9pm, just in time for your arrival, hopefully we can all meet then!

hugs! Jo
