Trek the Great Wall’s wildest stretches, following steep mountain ridges far from the crowds
Step onto a peaceful, semi-ruined section of the Great Wall and its immense scale quickly becomes clear. Far from the tourist crowds, we trek contrasting stretches of this remarkable structure, from restored ramparts and watchtowers to the rugged Wild Wall at Jiankou, where ruined towers cling to precipitous ridges. Follow narrow paths, loose stone and steep steps from watchtower to watchtower, staying in simple mountain guesthouses and getting closer to rural life along the way. Then return to Beijing, where historic hutongs and the Forbidden City reveal another side of China’s past.
