Itinerary

Bohinj Bohinj

Begin the adventure in Bohinj, a glacial valley framed by forested slopes and Lake Bohinj, the largest permanent lake in Slovenia. It sits within Triglav National Park, the country’s only national park, established in 1981 to protect the alpine ecosystems surrounding Mount Triglav.

Around 6pm, say zdravo to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and hear more about the adventures ahead.

Your tour leader then ensures a warm Slovenian welcome by arranging a group dinner.

Warm up for the week with a serene 7.5mi (12km) hike around beautiful Lake Bohinj. Our tour leader shares stories from the region, from Zlatorog (the legendary chamois said to guard the mountains) to how local communities live alongside the national park today. The trail delivers a changing perspective on Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest summit at 9,396ft (2,864m).

Return to the lake after lunch, this time to glide across it on stand-up paddleboards, learning the technique on calm water before striking out to explore. Because motorboats are heavily restricted here, the lake remains one of the most peaceful in the Julian Alps.

Switch to two wheels today, pedalling about 18mi (30km) along a mix of gravel and paved trails that loop around Lake Bohinj. Our route includes stops to appreciate the canyons, caves and cascades shaped by the Bohinjka river over centuries.

Midway through the ride, we pause at a family-run farm, where you’re welcome to join an optional cheese tasting. It’s also a chance to hear how alpine dairy traditions shaped life in this corner of the park − a story that comes to life when you meet the people who still practise them.

Come evening, we set out on a gentle lantern-lit walk to the lakeshore. The light fades over the water, and the lanterns cast just enough glow to guide us along the path.

A morning transfer (approximately 1hr 45min) takes us west to Goriška Brda, a hilly wine-growing region close to the Italian border. We switch to e-bikes and ride about 18mi (30km) on quiet lanes between family-run vineyards, cherry orchards and small hilltop villages. Midway, we pause at the Kolovrat Outdoor Museum, where our tour leader helps interpret the preserved First World War trenches and command posts that once overlooked the Isonzo Front.

The ride ends at a traditional Brda winery, where we learn how native varieties such as rebula and merlot thrive in this sunny corner of Slovenia − with a tasting to bring those details to life. A return transfer (1hr 45min) returns us to Bohinj.

Transfer (approximately 1hr 30min) to Bovec this morning for a white-water rafting adventure on the turquoise Soča River. After a safety briefing and paddling practice, we tackle a lively stretch featuring Grade II–III rapids, broken up with calmer sections ideal for a refreshing swim.

In the afternoon, those craving more altitude can join an optional zipline excursion on one of the longest systems in Europe. The course includes five lines, some reaching 2,300ft (700m) in length. The ride is fast, but the real thrill lies in looking out across the Julian Alps.

Travel one hour to the entrance of Vintgar Gorge, a narrow chasm carved by the Radovna River. A wooden walkway leads us for 1mi (1.6km) between near-vertical walls, where the river funnels into rapids, whirlpools and small cascades.

After, we continue (20 minutes) to Bled for an afternoon at leisure. You may choose to climb to Bled Castle, whose 11th-century fortifications stand on a rock bluff above the lake, or join a boatman rowing a pletna, a traditional flat-bottomed wooden vessel, to the island church famous for its wishing bell.

This evening, we enjoy our farewell dinner – an excellent chance to relive our adventures together and perhaps start planning the next.

You’ve walked the Vintgar Gorge boardwalks, ridden the trails around Bohinj and Brda, and rafted the lively Soča River, but now it’s time to begin your return journey home.

Getting to the start hotel

The start hotel is approximately 50 minutes’ drive from the airport. We provide one group transfer from the airport to the hotel, which you can join at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the transfer times or to arrange a private transfer.

Catching your return flight

There’s one group transfer to the airport, which you can join at no extra cost. Please speak to your sales representative for the time of the transfer. If the group transfer does not suit your flight time, speak to your sales representative to arrange an alternative.

Full joining instructions including local emergency numbers will be sent to you as part of our Final Joining Instructions. If you do not receive these at least a week before departure, or require them earlier please contact our office or your travel agent.

Food & Drink

Traditional Slovenian cuisine is hearty and tasty, with plenty of stews, sausages and dumplings to fuel your hikes. Vegetarians are well catered for, but please let us know in advance if you have any dietary requirements.

Weather

Slovenia has a mixed alpine climate with summer temperatures of 18C-25C (64F-77F). In the mountains, cool mornings are normally followed by warm pleasant days, with temperatures in the Alps ideal for walking. During summer, afternoon showers reduce the humidity, giving way to clear skies and pleasant temperatures.
