Sustainable Travel: Places

Looking after the places we visit

Our People, Places & Planet plan works towards improving life through travel - for the places we visit on our adventures, the people we meet when there, and the planet which hosts us. Here, we describe the Places pillar of our plan.

We love nothing more than creating awe-inspiring experiences in the world’s most staggering places. Throughout all seven continents, we’re continually seeking lesser-known destinations or looking for new ways to discover old favourites. Either way, we’re mindful that when we travel, our actions must protect and nurture places, rather than damage them.

The Places pillar of our People, Places & Planet plan seeks to protect biodiversity and wildlife, reduce waste, tread lightly and protect cultural heritage. This not only dictates where we travel to but also the experiences we create and services we provide. Through our Foundation, we support disaster relief projects to help the places we love through the hardest of times.

Here are some of the ways we seek to protect places through the way we create our trips, run our core business and use our Foundation’s funds…

Creating our adventures:

  • By travelling in small groups and using local guides, we ‘tread lightly’ to minimise our impact on local resources and the environment.
  • In 2016, we launched our Ban the Bottle campaign asking all of our operators to remove single-use bottles from trips; 99% of our trips have now eliminated the use of single-use plastic bottles.
  • We are committed to the highest standards for the care and protection of working and wild animals across our trips.  As a result, none of our trips feature damaging practices such as elephant riding or captive sealife viewing. Our animal welfare policy is largely based on ABTA’s global and industry-leading animal welfare guidelines, and we further contribute to the conservation of wildlife through the Exodus Travels Foundation. • For further insight into how each of our trips helps conserve the places we visit, look for the Responsible Tourism section in the trip notes.

Playing our part:

  • Our cross-company Animal Welfare Working Group has become an internal expertise base, supporting our product team in adhering to high standards of animal welfare.
  • Meanwhile our Plastics & Waste Reduction Working Group implements initiatives to identify and reduce waste across our offices.
  • We have reduced the number of hard-copy brochures we send to clients, ensure all are printed on paper from sustainably managed forests and switched to a biodegradable packaging.

Giving back:

Our Foundation's mission is to harness the power of travel to improve life in hard-to-reach places. Some of our places-orientated projects include:

  • Installing UV water filters in mountain eco-cafes to stop plastic bottle use.
  • Engaging communities in India in tiger conservation through education and empowerment.
  • Small-scale tree planting from the Braga Tree Nursery in the Himalaya.
  • Reforestation and rewilding in Finland with WildOulanka Foundation.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

Our People, Places & Planet plan focuses on six UN Sustainable Development Goals:

Goal 8 - Decent work and economic growth

Goal 11 - Sustainable cities and communities

Goal 12 - Responsible consumption and production

Goal 13 - Climate action

Goal 14 - Life below water

Goal 15 - Life on land

Our priority impact areas

We reached out to our team, clients and partners on the ground to understand which areas of social and environmental impact Exodus Travels should prioritise. Consequently, the priority focuses of our People, Places & Planet plan are community economic empowerment, wildlife and biodiversity, waste reduction, and climate change action.
